It is almost time for Pakistan's government to choose the next army chief. A senior Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader hinted that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif could start talking about the appointment by the end of August and possibly make a decision by mid-September.

It is customary for the General Headquarters or GHQ to send to the defence ministry a list of four to five senior-most lieutenant-generals, along with their profiles, so that the prime minister can choose the best candidate for the position.

Lt-Gen Sahir Shamshad Mirza, one of the senior-most among the four candidates, is the undisputed front-runner for any of the two positions of Chief of Army Staff (COAS) and Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee (CJCSC), Dawn newspaper quoted a military source as saying. Mirza is a native of the Sindh Regiment. He had a distinguished army career, especially over the last few years in high command roles.

PML-N leaders stated that they had essentially chosen to make the appointment based on seniority. However, another faction believes that the PM may just follow the incumbent leader’s recommendations.

Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa, the current COAS is all set to retire in November. The army chief's tenure is meant for three years but Bajwa was given an additional three-year term in 2019. However, the general still qualifies for another term. There is a possibility that the incumbent might be interested in or looking for another extension. But as per a military source close to Bajwa, he informed those close to him that he would retire in November, the newspaper reported.

Among the current senior brass, Lt. Gen. Azhar Abbas has the most experience in Indian affairs. He belongs to the Baloch regiment. Currently serving as the Chief of General Staff (CGS), he leads the army and has direct control over the intelligence and operations directorates, Dawn reported. He had previously commanded Rawalpindi-based X Corps and is Kashmir-centric, demonstrating the army’s entire confidence in him.

Lt Gen Faiz Hamid, a member of the Baloch Regiment, is another of the most talked-about candidates for the top job. He was a centre of a dispute between former PM Imran Khan and the COAS in the final stages, where the latter had chosen him for the post of commander of the Peshawar Corps and the former wasn’t ready to remove him. According to analysts cited by Dawn, PML-N leaders may find it impossible or challenging to consider him for the position of COAS.

Another candidate, Lt. Gen. Mohammed Amir, is a member of the Artillery Regiment, and currently in charge of the XXX corps in Gujranwala. He was formerly the GHQ’s adjutant general. He has extensive experience in both GHQ and command roles, having also held the position of director-general of Staff Duties at the COAS secretariat. According to Dawn, his professional path has put him in close proximity to the current political decision-makers.

According to The Nation, the effects of these terrorist attacks have been particularly felt in Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and have led to a deadlock in the peace negotiations.

Currently, Islamabad has consented to hold new negotiations with the organisation under the direction of the Taliban’s temporary government. A high-level military meeting in Pakistan resolved to conduct peace negotiations with the TTP in accordance with having a comprehensive security plan.

As per the Pakistani media, a shooting incident recently resulted in the deaths of at least six terrorists in the Kech district. However, due to mistrust on both sides, the Ulema delegation was unable to persuade the TTP to stop its attack and attend the peace talks.

Pakistan records surge in extremism with 434 terrorist attacks in the past six months

Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and his son Hamza Shehbaz have been summoned by a special court in Lahore in connection with a laundering case to the tune of 16 billion Pakistani rupees.

The court has summoned the father-son duo to appear on September 7 for the framing of charges and adjourned the hearing till that date, Dawn reported.

Both were absent during the hearing as their lawyers requested a one-time exemption on their behalf.

Seventy-year-old Shehbaz, and his sons Hamza, 47, and Suleman, 40, were booked in November 2020 by the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) under various sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act and Anti Money Laundering Act.

The case is being heard by a special court in Lahore, which already granted pre-arrest bails to both father and son.

The court had given them one-time exemption after Shehbaz's lawyer Amjad Pervaiz informed the court that the PM had not been well, while Hamza's lawyer Rao Aurangzeb said that his client had severe back pain and needed rest.

FIA Prosecutor Farooq Bajwa did not object to the exemption, which was granted by the court.

According to the FIA report submitted in the court, the probe team had "detected 28 benami accounts of the Shehbaz family through which money laundering of Rs 16.3bn was committed during 2008-18. The FIA examined the money trail of 17,000 credit transactions."

Benami transactions are those transactions which are made by a person without using his name or by using the name of another.

The amount was kept in hidden accounts and given to Shehbaz in a personal capacity.

"Eleven low-paid employees of the Sharif group who 'held and possessed' the laundered proceeds on behalf of the principal accused, are found guilty of facilitating money laundering. The three other co-accused of the Sharif group also actively facilitated the money laundering," the report said.

The elections have altered the balance of power in the provincial parliament, where the PML-N and its allies now have 179 lawmakers to the PTI’s 188.&nbsp;

Notably, the current Chief Minister of Punjab is PML-N's Hamza Shehbaz. The defeat of the PML-N has prompted a series of reactions from rival PTI.

Umar said that PML-Q leader Parvez Elahi will become the Punjab CM on July 22.

At 11:40 am (local time), the market witnessed a steep dip with the KSE-100 losing 1,598 points and sinking to 41,100, the Dawn newspaper reported. The benchmark KSE-100 index was down 2,053 points At 12 pm.

As per the PSX rules, if the index goes five per cent above or below its last close and stays there for five minutes, trading in all securities is halted for a short period.Raza Jafri, the Intermarket Securities` head of equities blamed "massive taxes" as the reason behind the drop.&nbsp;

"The market has reacted very negatively because it will severely hurt corporate profitability," he told Dawn.

The Pakistan Prime Minister today said that his government plans to impose a 10 per cent super tax on large-scale industries, and that "tough decisions" have been taken to protect the country`s economy.He announced the imposition of a super tax on cement, steel, sugar, oil and gas, fertiliser, banking, textile, chemical, beverage, and automobile industries.

"A 1 per cent tax has been imposed on people earning over PKR 150 million, 2 per cent on those earning over PKR 200 million, 3per cent on those earning over PKR 250 million and 4 per cent on those earning over PKR 300 million," he said.

He termed this measure as "tough decisions" in line with the federal budget for the next fiscal year 2022-23."I want to brief the people about those decisions and the actual [economic] situation of the country," Shehbaz was quoted as saying by Geo News.

"Our first motive is to provide relief to the masses and to reduce the burden of inflation on the people and facilitate them," he said.&nbsp;

"Our second motive is to protect the country from going bankrupt," he added.

Explaining the motives of his government for the super tax, he laid stress on the need to stabilise the economy of Pakistan.&nbsp;

"These aren`t just words, this is the voice of my heart and InshaAllah we will be able to achieve all these targets," he emphasised.

Pakistan Stock Exchange plunges after govt announces 'super tax' on industries

Out of approximately $21 billion in outstanding official loans including commercial, bilateral and safe deposits, China had agreed in principle for granting a fresh rollover of $2.5 billion in commercial loans to Pakistan for one year in March.

With additional funds in compliance with its conditionality of doing away with subsidies and raising taxes and power tariffs, the International Monetary Fund has also agreed to extend the Extended Fund Facility to Pakistan.

Ditch tea, drink lassi: Pakistan education body wants to promote local drinks

Claiming that there were examples of countries that managed to progress despite similar levels of corruption, Pakistan's Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal has said that corruption was not the primary reason holding back the country's economic development.

As opposed to corruption, the PML-N leader indicated that the far bigger impediments to Pakistan's growth were "political instability and policy reversals".

"The biggest lesson today is that I can count many countries in the world that have developed despite having similar corruption as ours but you can't point out a single country that has progressed despite political instability and discontinuity of policy," he said while addressing a seminar in Islamabad.

Countries such as Bangladesh and India have managed to grow even though their corruption problem was just as severe as Pakistan's, according to Iqbal.

Stressing that reforms would require "at least a decade" to truly work, Iqbal said there was a "structural problem" that wasn't allowing Pakistan to take off.

He added that if there was not a continuation in direction for 10 years then no good measure would yield results.

"We have failed to give continuation to policies in this country and a big reason for that is our internal political situation."

Highlighting the requirement of strong fiscal discipline and economic management for economic growth in Pakistan, Iqsal said “We have to move towards export-led growth.”

The planning minister lamented that Pakistan was lagging behind others in the region as its tax-to-GDP ratio had never been above 12 per cent.

“We have to make our youth skilled and educated. Because of the CPEC (China Pakistan Economic Corridor) project, we got the attention of the world. The world wanted to invest here,” he said.

Endemic corruption and widespread tax avoidance along with decades of poor economic management by successive governments and military rulers are the reason behind Pakistan's economic woes, according to economic analysts.

Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, his brother and former premier Nawaz Sharif, and son Hamza have all been embroiled in countless corruption and money laundering allegations.

In 2018, former Prime Minister Imran Khan was voted in by an electorate weary of two-party dynasties on a promise of sweeping away decades of entrenched corruption and cronyism.&nbsp;

The order said that the FIA started investigating Hamza and PM Shehbaz when they were already in the NAB`s custody. It noted that they were interrogated twice on December 18, 2022, and January 8, 2021.

Following this, the FIA did not interrogate them for the next five months. Once they were released from NAB`s custody, the court said FIA asked them to appear before it.

"This shows that the prosecution wanted to arrest them again after their release, which shows its mal intent," the special court`s order said.

The FIA had alleged that PM Shehbaz and his son Hamza were involved in corruption worth Rs 16 billion.

In a written order for confirming their pre-arrest bail, the court said the FIA wanted to arrest PM Shehbaz and CM Hamza after they secured bails in the National Accountability Bureau`s (NAB) cases.

The special court, which was hearing the money laundering case filed by the FIA against Shehbaz and Hamza, granted the two pre-arrest bail last week.

"...allegation about gratification, corrupt practice, abuse of official authority, kickbacks, and commission requires further probe during the trial as at this stage cogent evidence is not available," the order read.

The order said that the Investigation office (IO), to date, has not mentioned in his diary that the petitioners were required to be in custody for further investigation, reported Geo News.

The investigation of the case has been completed and the charge sheet has also been submitted, therefore, the arrests are not required, the special court said, explaining its decision to grant the petitioners bail.

The order mentioned that the statements of the 64 people recorded in the case who had deposited the amounts relate to Rs 60.7 million and not Rs 16 billion&nbsp;as claimed by the FIA.

It added that in the statements of the 64 depositors, none mentioned the names of the prime minister and the chief minister. "Moreover, said statements do not spell out any bribery, kickbacks, or commission, etc."&nbsp;

After a protest march organised by his party got violent and left a trail of destruction in Islamabad last month, the Pakistani government is considering pressing sedition charges against the cricketer-turned-politician.

The Pakistani government has reacted angrily to Ataullah's statement. Threats against the country, according to Information Minister Maryam Aurangzeb, have no place in the political process.

The government has increased his personal protection as well as the security perimeter around his palatial mansion in Islamabad's Banigala suburbs.

However, a sitting legislator threatening suicide is unusual.

Experts urged authorities to prosecute Attaullah for his involvement in terrorism.

Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz has claimed that a troika of former Prime Minister Imran Khan, his wife Bushra Bibi and her friend Farah Gogi made "billions" under the tenure of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf government.

"It started in 2019, when Imran Khan gave a relief worth Pakistani rupees 320 million to Ahsan Jamil Gujjar - Farah`s husband - under an amnesty scheme," PML-N leader Atta Ullah Tarar said during a press conference.

The Express Tribune quoting Tarar reported that the former Prime Minister gave the relief due to his personal relations and friendship between Bushra and Farah.

Regarding this, he also played an audio tape -- purportedly a conversation between a business tycoon and his daughter, revealing how Farah 'demanded a gift'&nbsp;for the ex-first lady.

During the conversation, the woman said to her father that Farah Gogi allegedly demanded a precious diamond as a gift for the ex-first lady in return for "removing locks" on a project site and withdrawing a report against her father, The Express Tribune reported.

It was revealed during that discussion that Farah Gogi earlier had rejected a three-carat diamond sent by the daughter of a business tycoon as unworthy and unsuitable for the first lady, who she allegedly said routinely wore such things, and asked for a five-carat diamond.

While property tycoon Malik Riaz on Sunday termed an audio clip attributed to him on social media as "fake". He also threatened to take legal action against those behind the 'conspiracy'.

"With latest technologies as Deep Fake, fabricating an audio conversation shouldn't be a surprise," Riaz said in his statement cited by The Express Tribune.

He said that the audio tape associated to him on social media is a product of Deep Fake. "I don't wish to [be] involve[d] in political campaigns of any party, but the most appalling fact is that my voice and reference is being misused to settle personal and political scores," he added.

He said that Farah Gogi left Pakistan as soon as she realised that she was about to get into trouble and Imran Khan helped her in fleeing the country.

Uzma Bukhari, another PML-N leader, said that her party knew about the misconduct of the PTI government, adding that now 'proofs'&nbsp;are being surfaced for everyone to see.

"The audio reveals just one case [of bribery] but it is not the entire story... it is only a trailer of a film," she added.

Uzma said that Imran Khan had kept two "front women" to hide his corruption. "There is a saying that there is a woman behind the success of every man but in Imran Khan's case there were two women," she added.&nbsp;
