Mayor Eric Adams on Monday (Mar 18) was accused by a former New York City employee of sexual assault in 1993 when both worked for the municipal transit police bureau. Lorna Beach-Mathura filed a 26-page civil complaint in a state court in Manhattan, in which she claimed the assault took place in Adams’s car when he offered her to ride home to discuss her career problems.

Mathura said she had gone to Adams to seek help in navigating a career problem and hostile environment at the workplace because of his role at the time as both a police department officer and leader in the NYPD Guardians Association, a fraternal group advocating equality and fair treatment for Black employees.

The Democratic leader has vehemently denied the allegations and said through his lawyers that he doesn’t even remember meeting the woman.

<h2>What happened in the car, as per suit?</h2>

As per the lawsuit, Adams agreed to help the woman but said he “also needed some help.” Then Adams allegedly demanded oral s*x from Lorna Beach-Mathura. When she refused, Adams allegedly exposed himself and masturbated.

“Adams preyed on her perceived vulnerability, demanding a quid pro quo sexual favor,” the suit states, “revealing himself not to be the ‘Guardian’ he purported to be, but a predator.”

The lawsuit was filed under the Adult Survivors Act, a New York law that extended the statute of limitations for filing sexual assault lawsuits. The woman initially submitted her claim last November, just before the law's deadline, without providing any specifics about the purported assault.

<h2>Response from Adams</h2>

A spokesperson for Adams provided a statement attributed to the city’s corporation counsel, Sylvia O. Hinds-Radix, which described the allegations as “ludicrous.”

“While we review the complaint, the mayor fully denies these outrageous allegations and the events described here,” the statement read. “We expect full vindication in court.”

"Identical twins share the same DNA, but conversations covertly recorded between the two brothers following their arrests revealed multiple incriminating statements made by Kevin Konther, including admissions that he carried out the crimes," said the DA's office when Konther was initially convicted in February.

As per NBC News, the conviction in February stemmed from a jury finding Konther guilty of two counts of forcible rape, coupled with additional charges related to the molestation of a third victim—the 12-year-old daughter of a former girlfriend, as outlined by the prosecutor's office.

<h2>Charges against Konther</h2>

The heinous acts date back to 1995 when Konther, wielding a knife, forcibly raped a 9-year-old girl as she walked home in Lake Forest, situated southeast of Irvine in Orange County. In 1998, he ambushed and sexually assaulted a 32-year-old woman jogging in Mission Viejo.&nbsp;He was arrested in 2019.

Airbnb rape: He was her first-ever guest, assaulted her and then promised to give good review

Grammy-award-winning artist and US television star Paula Abdul has accused a producer on the singing contest show "American Idol" of sexual assault, according to a California lawsuit.

Abdul, whose 1988 album "Forever Your Girl" was the most successful debut in history at the time, accused Nigel Lythgoe, a producer on "Idol" and a judge on "So You Think You Can Dance," of sexually assaulting her twice, the complaint filed Friday showed.

Lythgoe, who is English, has denied the accusations, according to media reports.&nbsp;

In the suit, the 61-year-old singer said she was harassed by Lythgoe and other executives on "American Idol," where she was a judge from 2002-2009.

It alleged she was discriminated against in terms of pay, and that "she was the target of constant taunts, bullying, humiliation, and harassment from several executives, agents, employees" of the show.

The most serious accusations are against Lythgoe, 74.

Early in Idol's run, the lawsuit stated, Abdul and Lythgoe were on the road for the show's auditions when he attacked her in a hotel elevator, groping her and "shoving his tongue down her throat."

The second assault came after Abdul agreed to appear as a judge on "So You Think You Can Dance" in 2015, and went to dinner at Lythgoe's house, where he allegedly "attempted to kiss her while proclaiming that the two would make an excellent 'power couple.'"

"For years, Abdul has remained silent about the sexual assaults and harassment she experienced on account of Lythgoe due to fear of speaking out against one of the most well-known producers of television competition shows who could easily break her career as a television personality and of being ostracized and blackballed by an industry that had a pattern of protecting powerful men and silencing survivors of sexual assault and harassment," the complaint stated.&nbsp;

Her contracts also barred her from discussing anything "derogatory," it said.&nbsp;

Lythgoe told NPR that he was "shocked and saddened" by the accusations, which he denied.

The allegations by Abdul, whose other hit songs include "Opposites Attract," "Straight Up," "Cold Hearted" and "Rush Rush," are the latest in a string of high-profile lawsuits filed ahead of Sunday's expiration of part of California's Sexual Abuse and Cover Up Accountability Act.

A similar law in New York led to several high-profile cases, including against hip-hop mogul Sean "Diddy" Combs, in November.

Rina Gonoi, a former woman soldier of the Japanese military and a sexual assault survivor, said on Wedenesday (Dec 13) that the country's military would need sweeping changes in order to root out the problem of sexual harassment. A court in Japan held three male former soldiers, previously Rina Gonoi's colleagues, guilty of sexually assaulting her.

"I don't want to tear down the Self-Defence Forces, but it's exactly because I am so grateful to them that I want to see fundamental change," said Gonoi (24). She was speaking at a news conference in Japanese capital Tokyo.

It has been reported that Gonoi joined Japan Self-Defence Forces after childhood fascination with military life and after her evacuation by&nbsp;the same force when earthquake struck Japan in March, 2011.

However, she said that she faced constant sexual harassment from her male colleagues after joining&nbsp;Self-Defence Forces.

The worst sexual assault against her took place in 2021 when three of her colleagues pinned her down on a bed and simulated a sex-act on her. Some of the other soldiers, who were among onlookers, laughed and no-one came to her aid.

Gonoi tried raising complaints up the chain of command in the forces and decided to leave the force after her complaints were ignored and no action was taken.

In 2022, she went public with her accusations on YouTube. This is a rare move in conservative Japan where speaking about sexual assault is still a taboo.

"I didn't want to pretend it didn't happen," she said.

<h2>A rare apology</h2>

After her video struck a chord with the Japanese public and went viral,&nbsp;it&nbsp;further resulted in a rare apology from Japan's defence ministry and an investigation.

Shutaro Shibuya, Akito Sekine and Yusuke Kimezawa, the trio who sexually assaulted Rina Gonoi were sentenced to two years in prison by a court in Fukushima. However, the punishments would remain suspended for four years. The judge, while announcing the verdict, said that the convicts carried out a "despicable and malicious act" and ignored Rina Yonoi's dignity.

"Some [online] would say 'you are ugly'...[others] would say 'are you actually a man?," she previously said as quoted by BBC.

The conviction of the male soldiers has come just months after Japan strengthened its laws to tackle cases of rape. In June this year, the country redefined rape and also expanded it so that greater number of situations related to the crime are covered. It has been reported that Gonoi joined Japan Self-Defence Forces after childhood fascination with military life and after her evacuation by the same force when earthquake struck Japan in March, 2011. However, she said that she faced constant sexual harassment from her male colleagues after joining Self-Defence Forces. This is a rare move in conservative Japan where speaking about sexual assault is still a taboo. "I didn't want to pretend it didn't happen," she said. A rare apology After her video struck a chord with the Japanese public and went viral, it further resulted in a rare apology from Japan's defence ministry and an investigation. Japan: Woman ex-soldier whose colleagues were convicted for sex assault on her reacts to verdict

Three former Japanese soldiers were found guilty on Tuesday (Dec 12) of sexually assaulting a female soldier and have been handed jail sentences, albeit suspended. The survivor, Rina Gonoi, has broken many taboos in a&nbsp;country where survivors of sexual assaults are not willing to go public. The fact that the 'MeToo' movement has not gained momentum in Japan as compared to other countries is considered somewhat an indication of this.

Rina Gonoi, 24, broke the norms and spoke publicly about her horrific ordeal.&nbsp;

Warning: The following text contains descriptive information about the incident and is aimed at conveying gravity of Rina Gonoi's situation and her subsequent fight for justice.

<h2>The incident and initial denial of justice</h2>

The assault on Rina Gonoi took place in August 2021. Three soldiers pinned Rina Gonoi to a bed, spread her legs and pressed their crotches against her alternately and repeatedly.

She previously told the media that about a dozen other soldiers were present but no one stopped the three soldiers from sexually assaulting her. Some of the onlookers were even laughing, she said.

Rina Gonoi reported the sexual assault up the chain of command but her complaint was dismissed as she could not produce any witness.

The three men were later sent to prosecutors by Ground Self-Defence Force (GSDF) police unit but the case was eventually dropped as they could not find any evidence. Rina Gonoi left the army.

<h2>The YouTube video</h2>

Rina Gonoi made a video and posted it on YouTube describing what she went through. Her story struck a cord and the video went viral. Rina Gonoi was able to gather more than 100,000 signatures for a petition that asked Japan's defence ministry to open an investigation into her case.

This led to the ministry issuing an apology and a rare investigation revealed there were more than 100 complaints of harassment within the ministry itself, reported BBC.

<h2>The threats and abuse</h2>

Now that the accused in Rina Gonoi's case have been held guilty, it is quite tempting to view the entire episode as one inspirational story. It indeed is, but it also needs to be noted that to get justice, Rina Gonoi had to walk on a path replete with obstacles at every step.

When her video went viral and her story reached a large number of people in Japan, Rina Gonoi was subjected to online abuse and even got death threats.

"Some [online] would say 'you are ugly'...[others] would say 'are you actually a man?" she said as quoted by BBC.

"When I was collecting signatures for the petition, I got a threatening email saying, 'I'll kill you if you go any further'."
&nbsp;
When she was in the army, she said she was harassed "on a daily basis" even before the August 2021 incident. Her male colleagues would grope her or rub against her. Such behaviour from male colleagues was a regular occurrence for Rina Gonoi who joined the army because it was her childhood dream.

Shutaro Shibuya, Akito Sekine and Yusuke Kimezawa, the three former soldiers responsible for the sexual assault have been sentenced to two-year suspended jail terms.

She expressed satisfaction as the trio was punished.

"What they did should not be forgiven even if they say it was only to get a laugh out of it. The verdict clearly ruled that it was a crime. I want them to face up to what they did and think about it," Gonoi said outside the court as quoted by AFP.

"It was not necessarily a heavy sentence that I wanted to see. It was that they truly understand it was a crime, sexual violence, not something casual as they claimed."

On Tuesday, Judge Takaki Miura said that "shaking one's hip between the legs of the victim has strong sexual meaning" and "ignores the victim's dignity" and is a "despicable and malicious act".

In Japan, survivors of sexual assaults are rarely willing to talk publicly.&nbsp;

"While there are still areas of improvement (within society), today's ruling is a welcome sign that the voices of survivors of sexual violence in Japan will not go unheard and that accountability for such rights abuses is possible," said Teppei Kasai, Asia programme officer for Human Rights Watch as quoted by AFP.

Kasai reportedly said last week that a 2021 government survey revealed that only about six per cent of assault victims both, men and women actually went to the police.

Explained | How Japanese woman ex-soldier got justice after sexual assault by male colleagues

Three former Japanese soldiers were declared guilty by a court on Tuesday (Dec 12) for sexually assaulting a female colleague, bringing an end to a years-long saga that dominated headlines in a conservative country where victims hardly speak out against abuse.

Shutaro Shibuya, Akito Sekine, and Yusuke Kimezawa were given two-year suspended jail terms for their “forced indecency” on Rina Gonoi during a military drill in 2021.

The matter came to&nbsp;light last year when 24-year-old Gonoi took to YouTube to share her ordeal after the higher military officials dismissed the case citing a lack of evidence following a probe.

The video gained massive traction on several social media networks, spurring national outcry to punish the soldiers.

However, it was an online petition signed by more than 100,000 people that forced the defence ministry to finally acknowledge the assault, issue an apology,&nbsp;and dismiss five of the men involved.

<h2>Assailants charged with 'forced indecency'&nbsp;</h2>

In March this year, prosecutors reversed an earlier decision and charged three of the assailants with “forced indecency”.

Gonoi, who was present in court for the verdict, said her decision to go public was “desperate rather than brave”.

She said she used to experience harassment daily after joining Japan’s military in 2020.

“When walking down the hallway, someone slaps you on your hip, or holds you from behind,” she told AFP news agency.

“I was kissed on the cheek, and my breasts were grabbed.”

However, it was during a drill in 2021 that the scale of harassment reached another level.

<h2>Victim seeks damages&nbsp;</h2>

She said that three fellow soldiers forced her to the ground, pulled apart her legs and each repeatedly pressed their crotches against her while others watched and laughed.

Gonoi has also filed a damage suit against the three defendants, two other perpetrators and the government, saying she felt their earlier apologies were insincere.

She is seeking 5.5 million yen ($37,800) from the perpetrators and 2 million yen ($13,740) from the government, saying it failed to prevent the assaults, properly investigate or respond appropriately.

Sexual abuse complaints are often disregarded in Japan, and victims also tend to face hate for speaking up.

India's Supreme Court on Friday (Dec 8) slammed Calcutta High Court's recent observations that advised young girls to "control sexual urge". The top court deemed the observations as "objectionable and unwarranted" and further asked judges in the courtrooms across the country to avoid expressing "personal views or preach". The Calcutta High Court had made these remarks while hearing a sexual assault case involving an underage survivor.&nbsp;

The Supreme Court bench constituted by Justices Abhay Oka and Pankaj Mithal said that the remarks by the Calcutta High Court violated the rights of adolescents under the Article 21 of Indian constitution, the Press Trust of India reported. Bad news for Sean “Diddy” Combs as he was slapped with yet another lawsuit for allegedly gang-raping a 17-year-old girl in 2003. This is the fourth sexual assault allegation filed against the music mogul in&nbsp;a span of a month.

In the latest&nbsp;one, the woman identified as Jane Doe, alleged that she was flown on a private jet from Michigan to Combs’ recording studio in New York, where she was raped by three people, including Sean Combs and Harve Pierre, the president of Bad Boy Entertainment.

According to the suit, Sean “Diddy” Combs and his associates gave her “copious amounts” of drugs and alcohol. Once she was under heavy drugs, she was raped over a bathroom sink while she went in and out of consciousness. Sean 'Diddy' Combs accused of gang-raping 17-year-old in new lawsuit

Gun N' Roses lead singer Axl Rose has been accused of&nbsp;sexual assault by a woman who has said in a court filing that the singer with massive star power back in the 80s and 90s assaulted her in the year 1989. Her lawyers have said in the complaint that "this action is timely pursuant to the NY Adult Survivors Act".

This New York law allowed alleged survivors of sexual assaults to file cases beyond the statute of limitations. The law is due to expire on Thursday (Nov 23).&nbsp;

The victim who is an actress and a model has alleged that Rose (61) "sexually assaulted her". She also said that she "did not consent and felt overpowered".

There was no immediate public comment from Axl Rose after the news broke.&nbsp;

Gun N' Roses enjoyed huge popularity back in the day and has a cult following even today. Songs like 'Paradise City', 'Sweet Child O'Mine', 'Knockin on Heaven's Door' topped charts in the 80s and 90s. Rose, as a frontman of the band, had his own fandom.

He was present at the Las Vegas Formula One Grand Prix over the weekend ahead of the court filing against him. It has been alleged that the incident occurred in a New York hotel room after both of them met in a nightclub.

The civil case was filed on November 22. It calls for Rose to face a jury trial and award the victim "punitive damages".

"Rose used his fame, status, and power as a celebrity and performer in the music industry to gain access to manipulate, control and violently assault Kennedy," the complaint claims as reported by AFP.

Rose is the second prominent name in the American music industry to face complaints under the Adult Survivors Act. The suit against Rose has come on the heels of a rape complaint against rapper Sean Combs filed by R&amp;B singer Cassie.

In the complaint against Rose, the survivor has alleged that he forced anal sex on her.

Her lawyers say she "believed Rose would physically attack her, or worse, if she said no or attempted to push him away".&nbsp;

"She understood that the safest thing to do was to lie in bed and wait for Rose to finish assaulting her," it reads.

"(It) had lifelong emotional, physical, psychological, and financial impacts on Kennedy's life."

Her lawyers have said in the complaint that "this action is timely pursuant to the NY Adult Survivors Act". This New York law allowed alleged survivors of sexual assaults to file cases beyond the statute of limitations. The law is due to expire on Thursday (Nov 23). The victim who is an actress and a model has alleged that Rose (61) "sexually assaulted her". She also said that she "did not consent and felt overpowered". There was no immediate public comment from Axl Rose after the news broke. The suit against Rose has come on the heels of a rape complaint against rapper Sean Combs filed by R&B singer Cassie. In the complaint against Rose, the survivor has alleged that he forced anal sex on her. Her lawyers say she "believed Rose would physically attack her, or worse, if she said no or attempted to push him away". "She understood that the safest thing to do was to lie in bed and wait for Rose to finish assaulting her," it reads. "(It) had lifelong emotional, physical, psychological, and financial impacts on Kennedy's life." (With inputs from agencies)

Peter Nygard, a former fashion mogul, has been found guilty of four counts of sexual assault. A Toronto jury on Sunday released the verdict after five women testified against Peter Nygard, 82, that he used a private bedroom suite in his company headquarters to assault them, reported AP. After five days of deliberation, the court acquitted Nygard of one of five counts of sexual assault and one count of forcible confinement. During the six-week-long trial, the court heard graphic and emotional testimony from five women about assaults that occurred between the 1980s and mid-2000s. According to the prosecutors, Nygard met the women in social settings and invited them to his clothing empire headquarters in Toronto. He took the women on a tour, which ended in his bedroom suite with a bed, televisions and jacuzzi. The doors didn't have handles, and Nygard controlled the locks, added the prosecution. ALSO READ | US: A child killed, four injured after shooting at Texas flea market One of the women who testified against Nygard said she was only 16 years old when an older man she was dating took her to the headquarters, where Nygard sexually assaulted her. When she was leaving the premises, a woman handed her an emergency contraceptive pill. In another instance, a woman broke down during her testimony in court. She said she was worried about complaining against him because of his wealth and influence. However, Nygard denied all the allegations of sexual misconduct and assault. He told the court that he did not recall meeting four of the five women or any interaction with them decades ago. "My position is that I would not have conducted myself in that manner," Nygard told the court. Ana Serban, a Crown prosecutor, called Nygard's testimony "unreliable" during the closing arguments. Nygard's lawyer, Brian Greenspan, claimed that the statements given by the five women were not credible because of "fatal flaws and lack of testimonial trustworthiness." After the jury released the verdict on Sunday, Greenspan said he was considering appealing it. Besides the guilty verdict on Sunday, Nygard also faces criminal charges in other jurisdictions. He is facing sexual assault and forcible confinement charges in Quebec and Manitoba, with allegations dating back to the 1990s. Furthermore, he faces a lawsuit brought by 57 women, including 18 Canadians, in the United States. The case alleged that Nygard used violence, intimidation, bribery and company workers to entice victims and dodge blame for decades. However, Nygard has denied all allegations. Hong Kong: Anime-inspired online business exposes alleged sexual assault row

Three unnamed Real Madrid reserve players have been arrested by the Spanish police for allegedly distributing a sexual video&nbsp;featuring a minor.&nbsp;

While&nbsp;three players were detained from the&nbsp;Real Madrid sports complex in Madrid,&nbsp;a fourth player was currently being investigated. One of those arrested is a reserve team player and two play for the third team.

The police informed that the arrested players were not minors. They were&nbsp;released following a court decision, and only after data on their mobile phones was seized.

"They were detained on suspicion of distributing a video with sexual content involving a minor," a&nbsp;Guardia Civil police spokesman was quoted as saying by news agency AFP.&nbsp;

According to Spanish media outlets, the case came to light after the mother of the minor reported earlier this month that one of the detainees had recorded a sex tape of her daughter and distributed it. Three unnamed Real Madrid reserve players have been arrested by the Spanish police for allegedly distributing a sexual video featuring a minor. While three players were detained from the Real Madrid sports complex in Madrid, a fourth player was currently being investigated. One of those arrested is a reserve team player and two play for the third team. The police informed that the arrested players were not minors. They were released following a court decision, and only after data on their mobile phones was seized. "They were detained on suspicion of distributing a video with sexual content involving a minor," a Guardia Civil police spokesman was quoted as saying by news agency AFP. According to Spanish media outlets, the case came to light after the mother of the minor reported earlier this month that one of the detainees had recorded a sex tape of her daughter and distributed it. The 16-year-old girl and her mother hailed from the Canary Islands - the southernmost region of the country. Three Real Madrid players arrested over sexual video involving minor

Former Spanish soccer chief Luis Rubiales will appear before a High Court judge on Friday over a complaint of sexual assault stemming from his allegedly unsolicited kiss on the lips of player Jenni Hermoso - an incident that has triggered a furore over sexism in Spanish sport and society.

The events of Aug. 20 eclipsed the national women team's World Cup victory in Sydney and led to protests similar to the Me Too movement, prompting other women to come forward with reports of sexist treatment and assaults.

It also sent a shudder through the male-dominated ranks of Spain's&nbsp;football&nbsp;establishment. Rubiales, 46, has maintained that the kiss was mutual and consensual. After weeks of resisting calls for him to step down as president of the Royal Spanish&nbsp;Football&nbsp;Federation (RFEF), Rubiales, already suspended by FIFA, finally quit on Sept. 10.

But he remains unrepentant. "I am a good person, that in a moment of maximum happiness, with consent, asking beforehand...In truth, there can be no other intention than the celebration and the joy itself," he told British television interviewer Piers Morgan on Sunday.

He likened the celebratory atmosphere in Sydney to winning a lottery or seeing a war ending, situations in which he said "people don't ask permissions". Deputy Prime Minister Yolanda Diaz has called his actions "shameful" and said they showed that male chauvinsim was stil systemic in Spanish society.

On Sept. 8, prosecutor Marta Durantez Gil filed a complaint with the High Court against Rubiales after Hermoso told prosecutors that Rubiales kissed her on the mouth without her consent while holding her head with both hands at the medals ceremony.

The prosecutor added a possible crime of coercion after Hermoso said she and her relatives were put under pressure by Rubiales and his entourage to say that she "justified and approved what happened".

Judge Francisco de Jorge is in charge of an investigation that has to precede any formal charges under Spanish law, and will decide whether the case will go to trial. If it does, he could face between one and four years imprisonment.

De Jorge has ordered several media, including state broadcaster TVE, to send him footage of the incident and subsequent videos such as one of the players celebrating on a bus with Rubiales and referring to the kiss in what appeared to be a light-hearted manner. The investigation could take several months.

Friday's hearing is behind closed doors. The legal case will also be a public test of the leftist coalition government's flagship "Solo si es si" (Only yes is yes) law that puts consent at the heart of sexual relations.

Many players, sports bodies and politicians have backed Hermoso in a campaign coalescing around the hashtag #SeAcabó (It’s Over) on social media, showing the nation's increasing intolerance to abuse.

Spain's top 87 female players, including the 23 world champions, have refused to play for the national team until there are changes in the RFEF management line-up and style. The RFEF has since sacked women's team coach Jorge Vilda, appointing his assistant Montse Tome instead as the first woman at its helm.

Striker Olga Carmona said this week that the players were yet to determine if changes were enough for them to return to the team.

Football: Former Spanish soccer chief Luis Rubiales due in court in sex assault investigation

Police in Spain have arrested a man after he groped a woman journalist when she was live on air. The sexual assault has prompted outrage from government ministers. The incident has taken place at a time when a heated debate is going on in Spain&nbsp;over former Spanish football chief Luis Rubiales kissing&nbsp;World Cup winner Jenni Hermoso on the lips without her consent

The anger over Rubiales controversy&nbsp;has snowballed into a "Me Too" like moment in a country which is growing increasingly intolerant of macho attitude and sexual misconduct.

Isa Balado, the woman journalist, was reporting live on a robbery in Madrid for Cuatro, a TV channel. In the middle of her reporting, a man approached her from behind and touched her bottom. He then asked which TV channel she worked for.

Balado explained to the man that she was in the middle of a live coverage before trying to get on with her report. But host Nacho Abad insisted that Balado put the man's face&nbsp;on the camera. The journalist then confronted the man who had groped her.

The incident was far from over. As the man walked away, he tried to touch Balado's head. She ducked out of the way. The man continued to linger in the street before approaching her once more saying he heard her accusing him and that she should "tell the truth".

Balado asked for the broadcast to be cut because she did not want to give the man any more attention.

Spanish police said on X (formerly Twitter) that the man had been arrested for sexually assaulting a reporter live on air.

An Iranian journalist who interviewed the father of Mahsa Amini has alleged that she was sexually assaulted when she was arrested. According to an audio message, she is on a hunger strike in prison. The audio message was published by several Persian media outlets and also by rights groups.&nbsp;

Since she published an interview with Amjad Amini, the father of Mahsa Amini, journalist Nazila Maroufian (23) has been targeted by Iranian authorities.

Rights groups have alleged that authorities in Iran have stepped up an already intense crackdown to prevent a fresh wave of protests as one-year anniversary of Mahsa Amini's death draws nearer.

Mahsa Amini died in custody of Iran's morality police last September. She was taken into custody over her 'inappropriate' attire. Her custodial death sparked nationwide protests in Iran and people even called for the downfall of the clerical regime in the country.

Maroufian, who rights groups say has now been arrested four times in recent months, was most recently detained in Tehran on August 30.

"I was sexually assaulted in a situation where I was in the worst possible state," she said in the audio message from Tehran's Evin prison published by media outside Iran, including Iran International and Radio Farda as well as the Kurdistan Human Rights Network (KHRN) and Center for Human Rights in Iran (CHRI).

Maroufian hails from Amini's hometown of Saqez which is in Kurdish-populated western Iran. She said in the message that she was on hunger strike to protest against her own situation and also that of all women who are subjected to violence in police stations and prisons.

"This strike is for me but is also for all the women in dire conditions in Iran," she said in her message, which appeared to have been recorded during a phone call to her family, who also shared pictures of bruises she allegedly sustained in the assault.

Media reports earlier this week said Maroufian had been jailed for one year on charges of "spreading propaganda" against the Islamic system in the country.
