Indian doctors end strike over Kolkata medic's sexual assault and murder

Nick Carter has responded to Melissa Schuman's accusation of sexual assault. The Backstreet Boys singer has denied Schuman's allegations and has countersued her for $2.5 million.&nbsp;

Carter's filing comes over a year after Schuman sued him in April 2023 for sexual assault and battery. In her lawsuit, she alleged that Carter invited her to his Santa Monica, Calif., apartment after they filmed teen thriller The Hollow together in 2003. Schuman claimed Carter gave her a sedative and sexually assaulted her while she was there at his apartment. He was 22 and she was 18 when the incident took place.

In his counterclaim filed in the Superior Court of California in Los Angeles County on July 26, Carter alleged Schuman, who was the lead singer of the 90's girl group Dream, made false statements when she first accused him of sexual assault on her blog in 2017. She later gave several interviews where she backed up her claims.

According to Carter, Schuman continued to make several defamatory statements when she called him a rapist on social media, in a documentary and in press conferences between September 2023 and May 2024.&nbsp;

Carter insists their sexual encounter was consensual and her allegations were an attempt to revive her dwindling career.

Carter's lawsuit states that Schuman is well aware of his business dealings and intentionally made the statements "with a specific intent to damage Carter's reputation and interfere with his business opportunities, advantages and contracts," per his filing.

The documents also allege Schuman's complaint wasn't brought in good faith, and stated, "Carter did not sexually assault" her. The filing goes on to deny any attempt by Carter to "cover up" her allegations.

Not just Schuman, Carter has also denied sexually assaulting Shannon Ruth who had earlier sued him in December 2022 for alleged sexual battery.

Carter filed a countersuit against Ruth in Nevada after she claimed he raped her on a tour bus in 2001 when she was 17.

He started chatting me up – very normal conversation about our roots, family, etc. He is from Churu in Rajasthan… The conversation moved to what my hobbies are. He asked if I enjoy watching movies and I was like of course. He then proceeds to tell me he has some movie clips on his phone. He whips out his phone and earphones to show me PORN,” the woman said. The staff also informed the cops at Abu Dhabi who were waiting as soon as the gates of the aircraft opened. I could not proceed with a complaint because I would have missed my connecting flight to Boston," she added. “I was escorted to the next gate to ensure he does not come near me. Woman accuses Jindal Steel executive of groping, sexual assault on Etihad Airways flight

France's best-known priest, the late Abbe Pierre, a beloved champion of the homeless, has been accused of sexually assaulting several women and a girl, his charities said Wednesday.

A Capuchin monk since 1932 and an ordained Catholic clergyman since 1938, Henri Groues died in 2007 aged 94. He left behind a legacy as a friend to the poverty-stricken and founder of the charities Emmaus and the Abbe Pierre Foundation.

On Wednesday, however, it was revealed that seven women had made allegations of sexual assault or harassment by the elderly cleric dating back to between 1970 and 2005.

"Our organisations celebrate the courage of the people who have given testimony and, through their words, allowed these facts to come to light. We believe them," homeless charity Emmaus and the abbot's foundation said in a joint statement.

The allegations are detailed in an independent report commissioned by the charities after a first claim that Groues had assaulted a woman.

"This work meant the testimonies of seven women could be gathered, attesting to behaviour that could be interpreted as sexual assault or sexual harassment," between 1970 and 2005, the charities said.

One of the women "was underage at the time of the events", they added.

A source at Emmaus told AFP that no criminal complaint had so far been filed.

In a social media post the bishop's conference of France's Catholic Church expressed "shame that such acts could be committed by a priest".

<h2>'I need it'</h2>

Some 17 years after his death, Groues remains a familiar sight on charity shops posters and in metro stations urging French people to think of the poor.

He gave his inheritance away aged 18 to join the order of Capuchin monks, later becoming active in the Resistance to Nazi occupation and spending several post-war years as a member of parliament.

In 1949, he founded the Emmaus community that preaches self-help for excluded people, which has since spread to dozens of countries.

He was also a backer of the "Restos du coeur" soup kitchens movement and clashed with city authorities that failed to lodge the homeless.

The report's author Caroline de Haas said she had gathered testimony pointing to "inappropriate behaviour of a personal nature, a sexual proposition, repeated comments with sexual connotations, attempts at unsolicited physical contact and unsolicited contact on the breasts".

One of the women reported that Abbe Pierre had "started groping her left breast" while she was "at the foot of the stairs" in a hallway.

She said that a few years later she approached him in an office.

"I walked up to him to shake his hand. He tried to pull me towards the window. I told him 'No, Father'. He told me, 'I need it'. I said: 'No', and he left," she told the investigation.

<h2>'Idolatry'</h2>

Another woman said Abbe Pierre would "put his hands on her chest, breasts" while they "were talking about work".

And another stated that, one day, "when saying goodbye, he inserted his tongue into my mouth in a brutal and totally unexpected way".

De Haas said the investigation had triggered rising astonishment that Abbe Pierre's behaviour had gone unexposed for so long.

She pointed to a "form of influence fuelled by the age difference, the status of Abbe Pierre and a form of idolatry, or the situation of subordination between him and the people."

After the initial complaints had been heard, a confidential system for gathering evidence was put in place at three associations.

The Abbe Pierre Foundation's managing director Christophe Robert described the revelations as "a terrible shock".

He said the organisation decided to "shed light" on the allegations and "give a voice to these victims".

Epstein escaped from being charged of sex trafficking and rape in that case after pleading guilty to a less serious charge, only to continue with his crimes, until eventually being caught in 2018.

"Details in the record will be outrageous to decent people," wrote Circuit Judge Luis Delgado on Monday (July 1) while ordering the release of the documents from 16 years ago. He described Epstein "the most infamous pedophile in American history."

The documents include victim accounts and how underage girls were paid off by Epstein, who died in a prison cell in New York in 2019 while awaiting trial.

<h2>Who was Jeffrey Epstein?</h2>

Epstein was a New York-based financier with links to prominent politicians and business bigwigs, and even British royalty.

He was arrested in 2018 after strong media coverage of his crimes. Multiple survivors of his years of sexual abuse came forth and sued him, years after he escaped the wrath of law in 2008 in Florida.

Eventually he was arrested, only to be found dead in prison even as stories, documentaries and leaked records of his crimes continued to tumble out of the closet.

Subject of a Netflix documentary Filthy Rich, Epstein's crimes haunted his associates in years since his death, mainly his former associate and rumoured girlfriend, the British socialite Ghislaine Maxwell.

Maxwell, after months of hiding, was eventually detained in the US and is currently serving a 20-year jail sentence for helping Epstein carry out his sex trafficking crimes.

<h2>Epstein's modus operandi</h2>

In houses across the US and abroad, Epstein essentially ran a prostitution network that included several underage girls. He violated federal laws by moving the women and girls across state borders to present to his clients.

Maxwell and other enablers lured the victims through 'massage services' for him, which many of the girls - several from troubled households- entered into for a quick buck, but eventually got dragged into a network of prostitution.

Epstein also entertained big politicians and business tycoons and even a British prince, flying them in private jets to his mansion in Little Saint James, a small private island in the US Virgin Islands. During his ownership of the place from 1998 till his death in 2019, it was known as 'Epstein Island' and later became notorious as 'paedophile island.'

Current US presidential contender Donald Trump, former president Bill Clinton, Britain's Prince Andrew, and tech tycoon Bill Gates were associated with Epstein at different points in time, though their direct involvement in his criminal past has not been proven beyond doubt.

<h2>Not the first tranche of documents &nbsp;</h2>

This is not the first time that court documents related to Epstein cases were released. Highly redacted tranche of documents had been released since 2019, including those related to case filed by Virginia Guiffre.

Guiffre was one of the most prominent accusers of Epstein, who galvanised a network of survivors and won the cases against him.

Karnataka sex scandal: Woman alleges Revanna forced her to strip on video calls, raped her mother

A woman from Sandeshkhali in the east Indian state of West Bengal has alleged that individuals associated with the BJP coerced her into signing a blank sheet of paper, which was later filled with a false rape complaint bearing her name. This has added fuel to the already fiery political debate between the ruling Trinamool and the BJP, particularly heightened amid the ongoing election fervour.

Sandeshkhali in North 24 Parganas gained notoriety early this year when residents accused TMC's Sheikh Shahjahan and his associates of harassment. Shahjahan, expelled from Trinamool, was subsequently apprehended by the CBI after being on the run following a mob attack on Enforcement Directorate officials.

This comes as the Trinamool Congress filed a complaint with the Election Commission against several BJP leaders, including Suvendu Adhikari, alleging the dissemination of fabricated claims in the Sandeshkhali controversy.

The woman reportedly disclosed that during the visit of the National Commission for Women to the island, a person named Piyali prompted them to voice their grievances by filing a complaint.

"I told them that we had not received money as part of the 100 days' job scheme. I only wanted that money and had no other complaint. No rape happened. She (Piyali) made us sign on a blank sheet," the woman said. According to her, she later came to know that she is on the list of women who alleged rape by local Trinamool leaders.

Daughters-in-law of the woman condemned Piyali's actions, branding her as an outsider with affiliations to the BJP. They demanded accountability for the alleged deception. Moreover, she also claimed to be facing threats following their decision to expose Piyali.

"She is an outsider, she has come from somewhere else and talks big. We don't know how she has information about everyone here. Initially, she would just take part in the protests here. We later came to know she is with the BJP. She should be punished for lying to us and trapping us. I'm sure more people were deceived like this," the woman's daughters-in-law said.&nbsp;

Slater was further charged with breaching bail and ten counts of domestic violence order.

The ex-stylish opener will remain in police custody with his case due to be mentioned in the same court on Thursday.

Slater made his international debut against England during the 1993 Ashes. In a career spanning around a decade, Slater wore the Baggy Green 74 times, scoring 5312 runs at an average of 42.83, including 14 hundreds. Slater also played 42 ODIs for Australia.

Retiring in 2004, Slater took up the commentator’s job, making a name for himself in the commentary box since.

<h2>A repeat&nbsp;offender</h2>

It’s not the first time that Slater has been remanded in police custody. The former right-handed opener, in March last year, was arrested over an altercation with police at Noosa Heads unit complex.&nbsp;

While he was arrested for&nbsp;assault, he later pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of obstructing police.&nbsp;

As per the Magistrates court, the police went to his unit amid concerns for his welfare just before March 31st midnight. Upon arriving at his complex, Slater was found in a drunken state and was being aggressive and refusing to let the officers in.

Police prosecutor, Senior Constable David Hoffmann, said Slater verbally abused everyone and needed to be restrained. However, during his arrest, Slater struggled with the officers, causing one to sustain a cut to his finger from the handcuffs.

After being presented in front of the judge, Slater said he lost everything, including his job.

"Unfortunately, having lived a high-profile life at the top of my game, I've dropped the ball after my marriage broke up, and I'm struggling with not living with my three beautiful kids,” Slater admitted.&nbsp;

Public health strategies aimed at young people must address issues such as violence against women and risky sexual behaviours associated with exposure to pornography, according to a new research by Queensland University of Technology (QUT) researchers.

The study, conducted by Professor Michael Flood and Ph.D. candidates Maree Crabbe and Kelsey Adams from the QUT School of Justice, drew upon a nationally representative survey of 1,985 Australians aged 15 to 20 regarding their exposure to and use of pornography. Their findings have been published in the Australian and New Zealand Journal of Public Health.

The survey, conducted by Our Watch, an organisation focused on preventing violence against women and children in Australia, highlighted the public health implications of young people being exposed to pornography.

Crabbe explained that there is growing evidence indicating that pornography exposure and use have significant impacts on public health, particularly in shaping young people's sexual understandings, expectations, and experiences.

She noted that research has linked pornography with harmful attitudes and behaviours, including risky sexual behaviours, objectification of women, acceptance of rape myths, and sexual coercion and aggression. The aim of the study was to provide comprehensive research examining young people's pornography exposure nationwide, inclusive of demographic and geographical differences.

The survey findings revealed that pornography had a widespread presence in the lives of young Australians, with 86 per cent of male and 69 per cent of female participants reporting exposure to pornography.

Of those, 50.1 per cent of young men and 40.3 per cent of young women reported deliberately seeking pornography the first time they viewed it. Curiosity was cited as the main motivation for seeking pornography, followed by sexual stimulation, peer influence, and the desire to learn more about sex.

Crabbe further highlighted that the average age of first exposure to pornography was 13.2 years for males and 14.1 years for females.

Professor Flood emphasised that the extent of pornography exposure revealed by the study indicates that it likely significantly influences the sexual attitudes and behaviours of Australian young people.
