The Government in the Southern Indian State of Tamil Nadu has announced that it will be setting up a dedicated manufacturing space to cater for Taiwanese firms. Dubbed the Taiwanese Industrial Park, the facility is to be situated near the capital city of Chennai. 
"Taiwanese investments constitute a significant share of the FDI into the State, particularly in sectors like electronics and footwear. The Taiwanese Industrial Park will target to attract investments of Rs.10,000cr ($1.17bn) from Taiwanese firms in sectors such as electronic components, technical textiles, and footwear components, creating employment potential for 20,000 jobs," said the Industries, Investment Promotion and Commerce Dept of the Tamil Nadu Government.&nbsp;

US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick added to the uncertainty over President Donald Trump&rsquo;s tariff plans on Sunday, making it clear that the recent break for tech companies is only temporary.

But on Sunday, Lutnick made clear that this was only a pause. He said the White House wants to use tariffs as a way to drive the semiconductor and pharmaceutical industries back to the US.

Taiwan, on the other hand, produces more than 60 per cent of the world’s supply of semiconductors and more than 90 per cent of the most advanced chips, according to the US-based think tank Council on Foreign Relations.

When it comes to India, the country has 20 per cent of the world’s semiconductor design workforce, as per the KPMG report. The semiconductor industry is rapidly evolving and becoming a thriving domestic market in India, all of which are conducive to building an indigenous semiconductor ecosystem.&nbsp;

The comment came after a report by the Times of India on Friday (Jun 14) said that Kumaraswamy ‘wondered aloud’ if India needed investments like Micron Technology.&nbsp;

The US-based firm is investing $2.5 billion in Gujarat and potentially receiving Rs 3.2 crore ($383,003) in subsidies for every job it creates,&nbsp;Kumaraswamy reportedly said.&nbsp;

“The new manufacturing unit will generate about 5,000 jobs. For this, we are giving them $2 billion in subsidies…If you calculate, that’s 70% of the company’s total investment,” TOI quoted him as saying, during an address to party workers in his native state of Karnataka in the south.&nbsp;

He added, “I asked officials how justifiable it is to allocate such a significant amount of funds. Conversely, there are small-scale industries…in Peenya (an industrial area in Bengaluru) there are small-scale industries. How many lakhs of jobs have they created? What benefits have we provided to them?”

According to the media report, Kumaraswamy also thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the portfolios assigned to him and said that he would focus on creating employment opportunities for the youth, during the address to party workers.&nbsp;

<h2>‘A big decision’</h2>

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s cabinet green-lit several proposals which also include Tata Group’s plan to build an $11 billion site which will be the country’s first major chipmaking facility.&nbsp;

New Delhi expects its semiconductor market to be worth $63 billion by 2026 but has faced some setbacks in the past and also does not have a chipmaking facility, yet.

“This is a big decision for the country and a key accomplishment towards making India a self-dependent country,” Vaishnaw told reporters on Thursday. He also said that the construction of these plants will begin within the next 100 days.&nbsp;

The government also cleared Tata Group’s separate proposal for a chip assembly plant which will reportedly cost over $3 billion as well as a packaging venture between Japan’s Renesas Electronics Corp and the Murugappa Group’s CG Power.&nbsp;

Tata Group will partner with Taiwan’s Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corp for its project of building India’s first chipmaking plant.&nbsp;

The new facility will produce so-called mature chips – which use 40-nanometer or older technology – typically used in consumer electronics, automobiles, defence systems and aircraft, reported Bloomberg.&nbsp;

“This fab (semiconductor fabrication facility) will have manufacturing capacity of up to 50,000 wafers per month and will include next generation factory automation capabilities deploying data analytics and machine learning to achieve industry-best factory efficiency,” the Tata Group said in a statement.

The new semiconductor fab will be built in the Indian town of Dholera in Gujarat, according to the Tata Group and will create over 20,000 direct and indirect skilled jobs in the region.&nbsp;

According to the Indian minister, a third chip packaging plant worth $3.3 billion will be set up in the north-eastern state of Assam by Tata unit Tata Semiconductor Assembly and Test Pvt Ltd.&nbsp;

Altman is reportedly looking to resolve some of the biggest challenges faced by the rapidly expanding artificial intelligence sector — including a shortage of the expensive computer chips needed to power large-language models like OpenAI's ChatGPT.&nbsp;

The global chip industry is currently dominated by just a few firms, including Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) and US-based NVIDIA.&nbsp;

While many countries have unveiled plans to support domestic chip production, the financial support they have offered pales in comparison with the vast sums of money Altman has reportedly been discussing with investors.&nbsp;

The Journal estimated that the total cost of realising Altman's project could be as much as $7 trillion.&nbsp;

This is roughly a trillion dollars more than the market value of the world's two largest public companies -- Apple and Microsoft -- combined.&nbsp;

An OpenAI spokesperson told the Journal the company has held "productive discussions about increasing global infrastructure and supply chains for chips, energy, and data centres."

They added that they would "continue to keep the US government informed given the importance to national priorities."

Altman has held meetings with senior government officials from the United Arab Emirates, as well as SoftBank's chief executive Masayoshi Son and representatives from TSMC, according to the Journal.&nbsp;

Both Bloomberg and the Financial Times have also reported on some of Altman's meetings in recent weeks.&nbsp;

Altman has floated the idea of building dozens of chip-fabrication plants in the next few years with money from Middle East investors, and then paying TSMC to build and operate them, the Journal said.

After rising to prominence following the widely publicised release of ChatGPT, Altman's fortunes have wavered in recent months.&nbsp;

He was briefly fired from his position at the AI firm in November, only to be rehired a few days later after staff and investors rebelled.&nbsp;
