The Israeli firm confirmed that the contract had been terminated. Bloomberg had previously reported that the two corporations were in talks to cancel the agreement after failing to obtain Chinese approval.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The acquisition of the Israeli firm served as the cornerstone of Intel Chief Executive Officer Pat Gelsinger’s strategy to enter the Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC), dominated foundry business, a sector of the semiconductor industry that is expanding more quickly. However, Tower has experience and clients that Intel does not, while having a relatively tiny presence in the market where companies build chips on a contract basis.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“We will continue to look for opportunities to work together” with Tower in the future, Bloomberg quoted Gelsinger as saying. &nbsp;</p>

<p>Intel will pay Tower a termination fee of $353 million.&nbsp;</p>

<p>When the settlement was announced, Intel stated that it would take “about 12 months.” The chipmaker stated in October that it was aiming for the first quarter of 2023, but in March it cautioned that the timeframe might shift to the second quarter.&nbsp;</p>

Intel drops $5.4 billion deal after China holds up approval: Report 

<p>United States President Joe Biden has signed an executive order that seeks to prevent certain American investments in China, especially in sensitive technology and requires prior government approval for funding in other tech sectors.</p>

<p>The long-anticipated move, which could further strain bilateral ties, directs the US Treasury Secretary to narrow down investments in quantum computing, artificial intelligence and advanced semiconductors.</p>

<p>In a letter to Congress on Wednesday (Aug 9), Biden said he was declaring a national emergency to deal with the threat of advancement by countries like China "in sensitive technologies and products critical to the military, intelligence, surveillance, or cyber-enabled capabilities."</p>

<p>Strides by China in these areas constitute "an unusual and extraordinary threat to the national security of the United States" and certain US investments "risk exacerbating this threat," the order said, according to Reuters news agency.</p>

<p>The order seeks to tighten the screws on China’s semiconductor industry, which is heavily reliant on foreign-made equipment to design chips and tools to manufacture them.</p>

<p>The Biden administration argues that these prohibitions were intended to address "the most acute" national security risks and not to separate the two countries’ highly interdependent economies.</p>

<p>Meanwhile, the move has drawn mixed reactions, with the Democratic party hailing the decision, and the Republicans saying that the prohibitions should have included other areas.</p>

<p>Amid the ongoing chip wars, China's new envoy to the US has issued a warning that Beijing will retaliate if the Biden administration imposes new restriction on technology.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Ambassador Xie Feng, during the&nbsp;Aspen Security Forum China said his country did not want a trade or technology war but its leaders won't sit on their hands if the US had&nbsp;something up its sleeve once again.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"The Chinese government cannot simply sit idly by. There's a Chinese saying that we will not...make provocations, but we will not flinch from provocations," said Xie.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"China, definitely...will give our response. But definitely it's not our hope to have a tit for tat. We don't want a trade war, technological war, we want to say goodbye to the Iron Curtain as well as the Silicon Curtain."</p>

<p>Xie, who took over the position in May, dropped a cheeky analogy, suggesting the US wanted to handicap China by creating unfair competition.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“This is like restricting the other side to wear outdated swimwear in a swimming contest, while you yourself are wearing a Speedo,” he said. “So this is not fair.”</p>

<p>Last year, Vedanta and Foxconn signed an agreement to invest $19.5 billion to set up semiconductor and display production plants in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s home state&nbsp;in a bid to help India become a major electronics hub.</p>

<p>In a statement on Monday, the company said it is working to remove the Foxconn name from the joint venture which is now a fully-owned entity of Vedanta.</p>

<p>"Foxconn has no connection to the entity and efforts to keep its original name will cause confusion for future stakeholders," Hon Hai Technology Group (Foxconn) said.</p>

<p>It said that for&nbsp;over a year, the Taiwanese company and Vedanta have been working&nbsp;hard to bring a great semiconductor idea to reality.</p>

<p>“It has been a fruitful experience that can position both companies strongly going forward.”</p>

<p>“In order to explore more diverse development opportunities, according to a mutual agreement, Foxconn has determined it will not move forward on the joint venture with Vedanta,” it said.</p>

Foxconn pulls out of $19.5bn semiconductor deal in India, minister says ‘won’t impact fab goals’

<p>In a bid to bolster semiconductor manufacturing in India, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has extended invitations to two major American chip makers, Micron Technology and Applied Materials. Earlier,&nbsp;PM Modi had pitched his vision to transform the upcoming years of 2020s into a "tech decade", coining the term "Techade" to encapsulate the idea.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"I am confident that India's dream of techade will be fulfilled by its innovators and their patents," Modi said.</p>

<p>As per a statement by the Indian Ministry of External Affairs, "The prime minister invited Micron Technology to boost semiconductor manufacturing in India."</p>

<p>Former chairman of computer chipmaker conglomerate Tsinghua Unigroup, Zhao Weiguo has been accused of corruption by China’s top anti-graft watchdog. This comes amid reports of key players in Beijing’s semiconductor industry being investigated on graft allegations following the government’s billions of dollars worth of investments into projects that later failed or stalled.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The Central Commission for Discipline Inspection, on Monday (March 20) said that the former executive’s case has been handed to prosecutors who will then file charges against him. The regulators have also alleged that Zhao “took the state-owned company he managed as his private fiefdom.”&nbsp;</p>

<p>The former executive is among some of the prominent names who are facing an investigation as the Chinese leadership is seemingly getting frustrated over their failure to make semiconductors which can replace the United States-developed circuitry. Chinese President Xi Jinping’s government reportedly poured some $100 billion into the industry in a bid to reduce reliance on the West. &nbsp;</p>

<p>According to the regulators, Zhao allegedly passed profitable businesses to his relatives and friends while purchasing goods and services from companies managed by his associates at “prices significantly higher than the market”. Together, the acts caused heavy losses to national interests, said the regulators.</p>

<p>This also comes after reports that he has been under investigation since July. At the time, Zhao served as chairman of the company affiliated with the prestigious Tsinghua University, Xi’s alma mater. The issue of semiconductors has become a point of contention between China and the US after the latter has increasingly placed restrictions on the former to contain Beijing’s technological ambitions.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Zhao’s company is said to have become one of China's leading chipmakers after a series of acquisitions. However, under his leadership, it defaulted on several bond payments some three years ago, reported BBC.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Tsinghua Unigroup also finished restructuring last July which placed it under the control of another group of companies led by state-backed venture capital firms. It was also around that time that Zhao stepped down as the chairman.</p>

<p>Meanwhile, another area of scrutiny for Beijing’s authorities has reportedly been the National Integrated Circuit Industry Investment Fund or Big Fund where the anti-graft agency had previously announced investigations into executives who helped manage the company’s fund, reported Bloomberg.&nbsp;<br />

<p>The United States is planning to further tighten restrictions on export of semiconductor manufacturing equipment to China, said Bloomberg citing people familiar with the developments. As per the report, the US government is has briefed US companies about the plan and has told them that the restrictions may be announced as early as next month.</p>

<p>The Biden administration plans to coordinate with the Netherlands and Japan, according to the report.</p>

<p>This week, Dutch government said it plans new restrictions on semiconductor technology exports to China to protect national security.</p>

<p>Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said on Thursday that China was firmly opposed to the restrictions as a means "to intervene and limit normal economic and trade exchanges between Chinese and Dutch companies."</p>

<p>The US had imposed a slew of export restrictions late last year including a measure to cut China off from certain semiconductor chips made anywhere in the world with US equipment.</p>

Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said on Thursday that China was firmly opposed to the restrictions as a means "to intervene and limit normal economic and trade exchanges between Chinese and Dutch companies." The US had imposed a slew of export restrictions late last year including a measure to cut China off from certain semiconductor chips made anywhere in the world with US equipment. US set to further tighten export of chipmaking gear to China: Report

<p>The Netherlands has joined the US efforts to curb chip exports to China and has made known its plans to restrict export of semiconductor technology to China. The move is being made with national security in mind. Dutch Trade Minister Liesje Schreinemacher announced the decision in a letter to parliament, saying the restrictions will be introduced before the summer. This has marked first concrete move by the Dutch to restrict chip exports to China.</p>

<p>The US&nbsp;in October imposed sweeping export restrictions on shipments of American chipmaking tools to China, but for the restrictions to be effective it needs other key suppliers in the Netherlands and Japan, who produce key chipmaking technology, to agree. The allied countries have been in talks on the matter for months.</p>

<p>The letter written by The Netherlands' trade minister does not name China, a key Dutch trading partner, nor does it name ASML Holding NV, Europe's largest tech firm and a major supplier to semiconductor manufacturers, but both will be affected.</p>

<p>"Because the Netherlands considers it necessary on national security grounds to get this technology into oversight with the greatest of speed, the Cabinet will introduce a national control list," the letter said.</p>

<p>Reacting to the development, Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said on Thursday that China resolutely opposed the Netherlands' decision and said Beijing had lodged representations with the Dutch side.</p>

<p>"We hope the Dutch side will adhere to an objective and fair position...act to safeguard its own interests, and not follow the abuse of export control measures by certain countries," Mao said, without naming countries.</p>

<p>The US announced a new set of sanctions on Moscow on Friday marking the one-year anniversary of the Ukraine war to impose further economic costs on Russia. In coordination with G7 partners and allies, the US Departments of the Treasury and State will implement sweeping sanctions against key revenue-generating sectors like defence&nbsp;and banks, besides blocking access to semiconductors.&nbsp;</p>

<p>As per a White House press release, the new sanctions&nbsp;will result in sanctions being imposed on over 200 individuals and entities, including both Russian and third-country actors across Europe, Asia, and the Middle East "that are supporting Russia’s war effort."</p>

<p>The White House said in a statement that it was joining with partners in the Group of Seven countries to impose new financial penalties designed to stop the funding of Moscow’s war machine.&nbsp;The&nbsp;measures will include sanctions on 200 people and companies, restricting exports to Russia and increasing tariffs on products from the country.</p>

<p>US President Joe Biden said in&nbsp;a tweet on Friday, “From Kherson to Kharkiv — Ukrainian fighters have reclaimed their land. And in more than half of the territory Russia held last year, the Ukrainian flag proudly waves once more.”</p>

<p>The target will be a dozen Russian financial institutions, as well as Russian officials and proxy authorities "illegitimately" operating in Ukraine.&nbsp;Sanctions were also announced on "additional actors tied to Russia’s defence and technology industry, including those responsible for backfilling Russian stocks of sanctioned items or enabling Russian sanctions evasion."</p>

<p>"It also includes the targeting of Russia’s future energy capabilities in a manner that does not impact current production to minimize market disruption. The United States also is expanding its sanctions authorities to Russia’s metals and mining sector, tailored to minimize market disruption," the press release added.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Moreover, to restrict exports to Russia, the US Department of Commerce will take several export control actions, listing nearly 90 Russian and third-country companies, including in China among other countries, for engaging in activities in support of Russia’s defence sector.&nbsp;</p>

<p>These listings will prohibit the targeted companies from purchasing items, such as semiconductors, whether made in the US or with certain US technology or software abroad. "Commerce will also take action alongside G7 partners and allies to align measures on industrial machinery, luxury goods, and other items, as well as issue new restrictions to prevent components found in Iranian drones from making their way onto the battlefield in Ukraine," the statement read.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Another sanction includes increasing tariffs on Russian products. This will raise tariffs on certain Russian products imported to the United States, building on previous efforts to strip Russia of its international trade privileges.&nbsp;</p>

<p>These measures, the White House said, are designed to target key Russian commodities generating revenue for the Kremlin while reducing US reliance on Russia.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"These measures are carefully calibrated to impose costs on Russia while minimising costs to US consumers. Today’s action will result in increased tariffs on more than 100 Russian metals, minerals, and chemical products worth approximately $2.8 billion to Russia."</p>
