"We recognize that the unilateral controls we're putting into place will lose effectiveness over time if other countries don't join us," said one official, adding, "We risk harming US technology leadership if foreign competitors are not subject to similar controls."

In a statement, commerce department official Alan Estevez said that the move aims to prevent 'sensitive technologies with military applications'&nbsp;from being acquired by China's military, intelligence and security services.

The measures, according to Jim Lewis, a technology and cybersecurity expert at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), a Washington, DC-based think tank, are similar to the strict laws at the height of the Cold War and "will set the Chinese back years."

Semiconductor Industry Association said it was studying the new regulations and urged the US to "implement the rules in a targeted way - and in collaboration with international partners - to help level the playing field."

The firm has also applied for the Central Government's Rs 76,000-crore production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme for semiconductor manufacturing in India. This project is expected to come up at a facility that spans 300acres and the location for the same is being worked out, said State Industries Minister Thangam Thennarasu.

The Minister added that over the last year, the State government has signed MoUs to the tune of Rs 94,975 crore with 132 companies to generate 2.26 lakh jobs.

India: Singaporean firm inks MoU with TN Govt to establish semiconductor park at $3.5bn

ISMC on Sunday (May 1) announced its plan to set up India’s first semiconductor fabrication unit. The international semiconductor consortium will invest $3 billion in India's southern Karnataka state to set up a chip-making plant.

It comes after union minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said that the Modi government expects to grant approvals to electronic chip makers in the next six to eight months.

ISMC, which is a joint venture between Abu Dhabi-based Next Orbit Ventures and Israel's Tower Semiconductor, is expected to generate more than 1,500 direct jobs and 10,000 indirect jobs.

The drive comes as some companies look to diversify their manufacturing bases beyond China due to the ongoing trade war between Washington and Beijing and is a sign India is trying to move up the electronics value chain.

India's plan to incentivise&nbsp;semiconductor&nbsp;manufacturing also comes at a time when automakers and tech companies around the world are grappling with a global chip shortage.

New Delhi also approved an incentive plan to support 100 local firms working on integrated circuit and chipset designs.

Technology Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw told a news briefing the plan would help develop "the complete&nbsp;semiconductor&nbsp;ecosystem - from the design of&nbsp;semiconductor&nbsp;chips to their fabrication, packing and testing in the country".

The government said it expected the scheme to create about 35,000 high-quality positions, 100,000 indirect jobs and attract investment worth $8.8 billion.

Most of the consumer electronics, such as cars, computers and mobile phones, are powered by crucial semiconductors, which led to a significant rise in the exports for the country.
