After nearly detonating its first atom bomb 60 years ago, China is now said to be rapidly expanding the lethality of its missile force by making efforts to reactivate its Lop Nur nuclear test facility which is located in the remote Xinjiang Autonomous Region, in the country's northwest, as per a report published by the New York Times.

According to the purported satellite images which were first published in the New York Times, China is likely to soon conduct full-fledged nuclear tests or maybe subcritical nuclear explosions. In the subcritical experiments, nuclear explosions are stimulated with the use of chemical explosives.

The reports by the US government and independent experts have for years expressed concerns regarding China's old base Lop Nur. The reports have always emphasised China making preparations for year-round operations and having a “lack of transparency”.

However, now multiple satellite images have revealed that new boreholes have been drilled by the Chinese military – which is good for storing firestorms of deadly radiation that gets released from large nuclear blasts. The military has also made hundreds of expansions and upgrades.

A road runs southwest for about 75 miles to an old testing area. Satellite images have revealed dozens of miles of freshly graded new dirt roads in the eastern area of Lop Nur.

Horizontal tunnels bored into the side of the mountains were used for past nuclear weapons testing. Satellite images suggest recent excavation and construction in at least one of the tunnels.

In the satellite images, several new roads were seen recently added to the existing road network of the base, which extended nearly 30 miles to a new area located in the eastern hills.

In other images, drill rigs were revealed hidden in these hills, which carried the possibility of turning into an underground test area in future. In the newly developed area, deep vertical shafts will support larger atomic tests than the old network of shallow horizontal tunnels had.
Is China secretly working towards next nuclear test? Satellite images hint at development

The secret space plane of China is likely to be sending signals to maybe a ship or a hidden ground station near the west coast of North America, said amateur astronomer Scott Tilley, who has kept track of the craft since it entered the orbit of Earth last week.

The astronomer claimed that strong emissions, which were at the frequency of 2280 megahertz, were detected at a time when the uncrewed reusable plane flew over British Columbia in Canada, as reported by the South China Morning Post.

“I’m seeing a pattern in its radio emissions while over me and it appears to favour low-elevation western passes,” said Tilley, who has earlier worked with NASA in finding its long-lost IMAGE satellite in 2018.

“This could indicate a clandestine ground station on the west coast of North America or on a ship off the coast,” he added while clarifying that he was speculating.

Indian firm Skyroot Aerospace shot to fame by launching India's first privately-built rocket 'Vikram-S'. After the successful upper-atmospheric rocket launch mission in November 2022 helped them prove their fundamental technology, the firm promised to launch a more advanced rocket 'Vikram-1', that would orbit satellites in space. This maiden spacefaring rocket launch is planned for the first quarter of 2024. Skyroot has also signed a pact to launch the satellites of French firms Promethee Earth Intelligence and ConnectSAT.

Skyroot elaborated that their pact with Prométhée Earth Intelligence was to provide satellite launch services aboard its Vikram rockets for their JAPETUS earth observation constellation. With Expleo and ConnectSAT, they signed a trilateral pact where Expleo will provide Reconfigurable Software for ConnectSAT's IoT Satellite, set to launch on the Vikram-I rocket, building the futuristic OSIRIS satellite constellation.

These MoUs were signed at the Skyroot facility in Hyderabad, as part of the visit of a French business delegation.
The US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has taken a historic step by imposing its first-ever fine on a company for breaching its anti-space debris regulation. The commission announced on Monday (Oct 1) that Dish Network has been ordered to pay $150,000 for its failure to properly de-orbit its EchoStar-7 satellite, which has remained in space for over two decades.

Rather than executing a correct de-orbit procedure, Dish sent the satellite into a "disposal orbit" at an altitude that posed a risk of contributing to orbital debris.

Dish Network originally launched the EchoStar-7 satellite into geostationary orbit in 2002, a region situated 22,000 miles (36,000 kilometres) above Earth's surface. In 2012, Dish committed to an orbital debris mitigation plan, pledging that once its mission concluded, the EchoStar-7 satellite would be repositioned to a "graveyard orbit" located 186 miles (300 kilometres) above its initial position. This strategic relocation aimed to ensure that the satellite would not pose a risk to other operational satellites.

However, in 2022, Dish encountered propellant shortages in the satellite, making it unfeasible to reach its intended destination. Consequently, the satellite ended up positioned a mere 76 miles (122 kilometres) above active geostationary orbit areas, deviating significantly from its designated orbit by 178 kilometres.

Telesat, the Canadian satellite operator, has just inked a game-changing deal with Spacex. Telesat's ambitious light-speed constellation is set to take a giant leap forward with Spacex as its launch partner.

Telesat partners with Spacex for light-speed satellite

On Monday, Canada’s Telesat said that it had reached a deal with SpaceX to begin launching its low-Earth orbit (LEO) satellites in 2026, with the intention of offering international internet access from space by the end of 2027.

Since LEO satellites orbit 36 times closer to Earth than conventional ones, information is transmitted and received more quickly, improving broadband coverage even in remote locations.

The LEO constellation launched by Telesat is named Lightspeed.

“It is another big step forward on our path to get Lightspeed up there,” Reuters quoted Telesat CEO Dan Goldberg as saying.

The deal, which covers 14 launches, was not valued. According to the firm, the constellation will be deployed by the end of 2027, when Telesat intends to offer a global service. Each Falcon 9 rocket will be able to launch up to 18 satellites into orbit. This comes three years after the original deadline.

Telesat’s stock declined 5.3 per cent to Canadian $21.99 ($16.20), following an early trade gain of about 3.2 per cent.

Last month, Telesat said that by hiring Canada’s MDA Ltd to construct 198 satellites, it would save $2 billion. Thales Alenia Space received the contract in 2021.

Thales informed Telesat roughly two years ago that it could no longer match with the agreed price and timetable due to “COVID hit, and supply chain issues hit, and inflation hit,” Reuters cited Goldberg.

The 14 launches will be carried out by SpaceX, which “gives us scope to expand the constellation above and beyond the 198 (satellites) that we've committed to with MDA,” Goldberg told Reuters.

With the goal of serving corporate customers, such as mobile operators, governments, aircraft and shipping corporations, Telesat is entering the competitive new world of LEO networks.

The majority of the LEO competition, which also includes Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin and its Project Kuiper and SpaceX’s Starlink network, is geared at the consumer market.

Large bulk launch contracts like Telesat’s SpaceX contract have significantly reduced the U.S. launch supply in recent years due to satellite constellations.

The largest commercial launch contract in history was won by Amazon in 2022 for 83 missions across different launch firms to deploy its Kuiper network. With the aid of its expanding Starlink constellation, SpaceX hopes to roughly double its current yearly launch rate by 2023.

South Korea said on Monday (June 12) that Chinese warships are carrying out a salvage operation in waters where a North Korean space rocket crashed. Last month, North Korea unsuccessfully attempted to launch a military satellite. The satellite crashed into the water near the west coast island of Eocheongdo. SpaceX's Starlink secures Pentagon contract to provide satellite services to Ukraine

North Korea state media said on Wednesday that a military spy satellite was launched but it failed and crashed into the sea.

"The launched new satellite transport rocket 'Cheollima-1' crashed into the West Sea of Korea as it lost momentum due to abnormal start-up of the two-stage engine after one step separation while flying normally," the Korean Central News Agency reported.

Pyongyang’s failure to put the country’s first spy satellite into orbit is being viewed as an embarrassment for its leader Kim Jong Un who has been pushing for a boost of North Korea’s military capability amid the security tensions with the United States and South Korea.

It was the nuclear-armed state's sixth satellite launch attempt, and the first since 2016 and would have been North Korea’s first spy satellite in orbit.

North Korea's National Aerospace Development Administration (NADA) will investigate the "serious defects" and take action to overcome them before conducting a second launch as soon as possible, KCNA said.

The launch of the satellite, meanwhile, caused panic and a flurry of activity in South Korean capital Seoul as air raid sirens blared and city authorities asked citizens to be prepared for evacuation before saying that the evacuation order was 'incorrectly issued'.

The text alert that was initially sent read, "Citizens, please prepare to evacuate and allow children and the elderly to evacuate first."

Missile alert warning system activated in Japan

Japan activated its missile alert warning system for the southern region of Okinawa soon after the North Korean launch.

"Missile launch. Missile launch. North Korea appears to have launched a missile. Please take shelters inside buildings or underground," said the alert tweeted by the prime minister’s office and carried on national broadcaster NHK.

The official English language Twitter handle of Japan PMO said in its tweets that a 'suspected ballistic missile' has been fired by North Korea and that 'it will possibly land in the area around Okinawa'.

But around 30 minutes later, the government tweeted that the alert was being cancelled.

"It is expected that the missile reported earlier will not come to Japan. The call for evacuation is lifted," it said.

News agency Yonhap quoted South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff assaying that the projectile flew over the Yellow Sea and didn't affect the Seoul metropolitan area.

The text alert that was initially sent read, "Citizens, please prepare to evacuate and allow children and the elderly to evacuate first." Missile alert warning system activated in Japan Japan activated its missile alert warning system for the southern region of Okinawa soon after the North Korean launch. Officials from the United States, Japan, South Korea held a phone call and “strongly condemned" the launch, Japan’s foreign ministry said.
