Russia summons wheelchair-bound man to fight in the Ukrainian war

Ukraine's economy shrank by an estimated 30% in the first three quarters of 2022 compared with the same period in 2021, largely due to Russia's invasion, the economy ministry said on Saturday.

Bad weather in September that slowed the pace of harvesting also played a role, as did interruptions in power supply from the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, the ministry said in a statement. Ukraine and Russia accuse each other of shelling the facility.

Exports in September jumped by 23% from August to their highest level since the war started in February, helped by an internationally brokered deal allowing the shipment of grain from the Black Sea ports.

"The situation at the front improved in September, but the enemy continued shelling Ukrainian territory, which put pressure on business sentiments and logistics," the ministry said.

"Further destruction of production facilities, infrastructure and residential buildings, as well as uncertainty over how long the war would last, were hindering development and postponing the recovery," it said.

In July, Ukraine's central bank said the economy could shrink by a third in 2022 and was expected to grow between 5% and 6% in 2023 and 2024.

The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) has warned its members that Russian President Vladimir Putin has deployed Poseidon, a nuclear weapon that is also known as the "weapon of the Apocalypse".

Apparently, over the weekend, NATO issued a warning note that was leaked to Italian Media. As per the note, the doomsday weapon is on its way from its base in the Arctic circle to the Kara Sea.

What did the warning note say?

As per the note, the Belgorod, a huge nuclear submarine, has gone missing from its home base in the Arctic circle and it may be on its way to test out a destructive, dangerous nuclear weapon called Poseidon.

What is Poseidon?

It is an 'Intercontinental Nuclear-Powered Nuclear-Armed Autonomous Torpedo' that is believed to be capable of travelling huge distances underwater.

Poseidon is capable of a detonation that can trigger a 1,600 ft nuclear tsunami that is "designed to drown and irradiate coastal cities" reports Daily Mail.

The next-generation weapon was announced by the Russian president back in 2018. As per Russian media, the doomsday weapon can travel up to 6,000 miles under water. It packs an explosion of two megatonnes. For context, this is more than 130 times the nuclear explosion of "Little Boy", the atomic bomb that wrecked Hiroshima in Japan back in August 1945 during World War II.

As per Naval News, "It is a giant torpedo which can hit coastal cities with devastating results. Compared to an intercontinental ballistic missile it is very slow, but possibly unstoppable."

Italian publication La Reppubblica quoted an expert HI Sutton as saying that Poseidon "is a completely new category of weapon - which will oblige a change in the planning of the western navies, leading to the definition of new requirements and new means to counter it".

As per Daily Mail, the weapon has never been tested thanks to the international prohibition on testing of nuclear weapons, and if Russia does test it now, this would mark a highly "provocative" move by the nation.

How did Ukraine react to the warning?

Pravda reports that Ukraine, which has for the past few months been facing aggression and destruction at the hands of Russia, has urged the media not to spread disinformation and called the information manipulative.

As per a Facebook post by Ukraine's National Security and Defence of Ukraine [NSDC], "information about the submarine 'Belgorod' can play on the hand of Russian propaganda".

NATO warns Russia may have deployed its 'weapon of the Apocalypse' Poseidon. Here's all you need to know

In his speech to parliament on September 30, Russian President Vladimir Putin is expected to declare the inclusion of the seized territories of Ukraine into the Russian Federation, the British ministry of defence warned on Tuesday.

"Russia's leaders almost certainly hope that any accession announcement will be seen as a vindication of the special military operation and will consolidate patriotic support for the conflict," the defence ministry said in its daily briefing on Twitter.

The reports also came as Russian-controlled regions of Ukraine held their final day of voting in referendums that were expected to be used as a justification for their annexation by Moscow. This has increased friction between the Kremlin and the West over fears that Russia may use nuclear weapons.

The United States announced Wednesday that it is doubling the number of deadly Himars rocket systems sent to Ukraine as part of a new military aid package worth $1.1 billion.

The 18 additional multiple rocket systems, which have pinpoint accuracy and have been used by Ukraine to wreak havoc on high-value Russian targets such as command posts and ammunition dumps, will be sent over the medium- and long-term, the Pentagon said.

Instead of weapons taken from existing stockpiles, this package will consist of newly procured arms, and the Himars alone could "take a few years," according to a senior Pentagon official.

So far, 16 Himars have been deployed by the Ukrainians, and the rocket systems have been credited with playing a key role in recent counteroffensives against the invading Russians.

The latest package of orders for US military suppliers also includes 150 armored vehicles, 150 tactical vehicles for towing weapons, trucks and trailers, and systems to help Ukraine defend against Russia's Iranian-made drones increasingly deployed on the battlefield, according to a Defense Department statement.

The package "represents a multi-year investment in critical capabilities to build the enduring strength of Ukraine's Armed Forces" as they continue to battle the invading Russian army, the Pentagon said.

The new package took the total US military aid to Ukraine since the Russians invaded in late February to $16.2 billion.

White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said the commitment to keep supplying weapons shows "we will not be deterred from supporting Ukraine. We will continue to stand with the Ukrainian people and provide them with the security assistance they need to defend themselves for as long as it takes."

Russia is aiming to annex four occupied regions of Ukraine and hence the launched referendums on Friday (September 23). The referendums can prove to be a turning point in the seven-month-old war but Kyiv has termed them sham. Ukraine also claimed that it saw residents threatened with punishment if they did not vote. The Ukrainian officials have claimed that people were banned from leaving some occupied areas until the four-day vote was over. As per the officials, armed groups were going to homes to force people to cast ballots, and employees were threatened with sacking if they did not participate. Ukraine says residents coerced into Russian referendum vote

Italy's Silvio Berlusconi was forced to clarify on Friday remarks about long-time friend Vladimir Putin after suggesting the Russian leader was "pushed" by his entourage into invading Ukraine.

The 85-year-old former prime minister's party is expected to return to power following Italian general elections on Sunday as a junior partner in a government led by Giorgia Meloni's far-right Brothers of Italy.

"Putin has fallen into a truly difficult and dramatic situation," Berlusconi told Rai television late Thursday.

He said a delegation of pro-Russian separatists in eastern Ukraine's Donbas region went to Moscow to appeal for help against what they claimed were attacks by Ukrainian forces.

"Putin was pushed by the Russian population, by his party, by his ministers, to invent this special operation... to enter and within a week reach Kyiv, replace the (Volodymyr) Zelensky government with good people and in another week go back," Berlusconi said.

His comments sparked an outcry in Italy, prompting the former premier to insist he was misunderstood and had just been reporting what others had said.

"The aggression against Ukraine is unjustifiable and unacceptable," he said in a statement on Friday, offering his support for the EU and NATO.

Enrico Letta, head of the centre-left Democratic Party, called his comments "scandalous".

Berlusconi has long been friends with Putin. The other member of his alliance with Meloni, League leader Matteo Salvini, has in the past often expressed admiration for the Russian president.

Meloni strongly supports, however, the policy of the outgoing Italian government in sending weapons to Ukraine and backing Western sanctions against Russia.

Former Italy premier Silvio Berlusconi clarifies Putin 'pushed' into Ukraine war remark

Protests and emotional outbursts marked the first full day of Russia’s first mobilisation since World War II. Even though President Putin talked of a partial mobilisation, there are indications that Russia could be considering far more than the 300,000 new conscripts.

“It’s not a partial mobilisation, it’s a 100 per cent mobilisation,” said Alexandra Garmazhapova, president of the Free Buryatia Foundation, an activist group. The group has reported on the draft in the region.

The group received and identified more than 3,000 reports of povestka, or draft papers, being delivered in Buryatia within 24 hours of Putin announcing the mobilisation. Women cried and hugged as they sent their husbands and sons off to fight in Russia’s war in Ukraine. People could be seen protesting at the draft centres with officials telling them that “You’re fighting for your children’s future".

“We don’t have a present, what kind of future are you talking about?,” a man in the crowd responded.

Even though Russia assured that only men who had recently served in the army and had combat experience will be drafted, activists pointed to a number of cases of men in their 50s receiving draft notices. One woman told Guardian that her 52-year-old relative has been delivered a povestka just before the draft was announced the previous day.

Defence minister Sergei Shoigu said in a televised address that Russia would be targeting 300,000 draftees, mainly those with recent military experience. However, some people think the order signed by Putin is likely to have a much higher number. An independent Russian newspaper puts the number at one million.

Video and anecdotal evidence has shown large drafts taking place even in small towns. Most of these towns are in Russia’s ethnic minority republics that have also suffered a disproportionate number of deaths and casualties from the war.

Meanwhile, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov has apparently confirmed that police were handing down draft notices to detainees. “It does not violate the law,” he said.

People have been protesting against the mobilisation call and several of those detained following the protests were immediately given the draft notice, reports say.

UNGA: Biden tears into Putin, says Russia has 'shamelessly violated' UN charter

Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a partial military mobilisation in the country in order to put the economy at a “wartime footing” as the invasion of Ukraine continues. In a pre-recorded speech which was televised all around the country, Putin said that the decision taken “to defend the motherland, its sovereignty and territorial integrity” will be viewed as an escalation by the West.

Following the Russian premier's announcement oil prices saw an increase of about 3 per cent due to worries about a tighter oil and gas supply. With this, oil companies, BP and Shell both saw their shares rise by over 2.5 per cent each. While BAE Systems, the largest defence business in the United Kingdom, gained 5.3 per cent.

According to Reuters, Putin also said that the West “wants to destroy our country” and claimed that they had tried to “turn Ukraine’s people into cannon fodder”. The “mobilisation events” will begin on Wednesday, but the Russian president did not provide any more details about the timeline.

"If the territorial integrity of our country is threatened, we will use all available means to protect our people - this is not a bluff," Putin said in the address.

As part of the partial militarisation, there will be a boost in weapons production and as a result, the citizens and businesses in the country are expected to contribute more to the war financially.

'Will use all available means, this is not a bluff': Russia's Putin announces partial military mobilisation

Russia has been reportedly hiring prisoners to fight its war in an attempt to compensate for the acute shortage of personnel fighting in Ukraine. The name of a private agency has come to the fore that has been recruiting these inmates, who face serious charges like murder and loot.

According to the Guardian, Yevgeny Prigozhin, a close ally of President Vladimir Putin, and the reported head of the Wagner group—a private military company and often described as a network of mercenaries—has been sending these convicted felons to the battlefield.

Though there is no official number available as to how many have been hired, a US official on Monday said that Wagner was trying to recruit more than 1,500 prisoners.

A video had gone viral last week on Russian social media showing a man closely resembling Prigozhin telling inmates at a prison 500 miles north of Tambov that they would be freed if they served six months with his group.

This is the first time that the enlistment process had been captured on camera.

The Guardian spoke to several prisoners and close family members of inmates across different penal colonies in Russia who all gave similar accounts of how Prigozhin was personally conducting recruitment in prisons, and how they are promised freedom and money in exchange for their services.

One of the inmates, Ivan, told the UK daily that around 120 inmates joined the group and were now fighting in Ukraine after a one-week training course.

All the prisoners interviewed said they were promised a presidential pardon after six months and a salary of 100,000 rubles (£1,400) a month.

Last month, Pentagon said that Russia has lost around 80,000 soldiers since its invasion of Ukraine began.

A video had gone viral last week on Russian social media showing a man closely resembling Prigozhin telling inmates at a prison 500 miles north of Tambov that they would be freed if they served six months with his group. This is the first time that the enlistment process had been captured on camera. Also read | Ukraine's Western allies condemn Russian referendum plans for occupied regions The Guardian spoke to several prisoners and close family members of inmates across different penal colonies in Russia who all gave similar accounts of how Prigozhin was personally conducting recruitment in prisons, and how they are promised freedom and money in exchange for their services. (With inputs from agencies) WATCH WION LIVE HERE:

After 4 months of brutal torture, 7 Sri Lankans freed with Ukraine's recapture of Izyum. This is their story

In a counter-offensive centred on the country's northeast, Ukraine said Sunday its forces had recaptured more than 3,000 square kilometres (1,158 square miles) this month from Russian troops.

Ukrainian general Valeriy Zaluzhny said, "Since the beginning of September, more than 3,000 square kilometres have been returned to Ukrainian control. Around Kharkiv, we have begun to advance not only in the south and east but also to the north. We are 50 kilometres (31 miles) from the border."

Exploiting quick gains they made in a week of fighting that has sharply changed the course of the conflict, Ukrainian forces pushed its counteroffensive in the country’s east.

Marking the biggest battlefield success for Ukrainian forces since they thwarted a Russian attempt to seize Kyiv, Moscow withdrew its troops to prevent them from being surrounded in Kharkiv.

Recaptured over 3,000 sq km this month from Russian troops: Ukraine

Faced with an energy crisis at the hands of Russia, Germany has taken a U-turn from its plans of a nuclear exit and announced on Monday that it would keep two of its nuclear plants on standby beyond the end of this year.

This comes a Russia has shut off gas supplies to Europe. After a three-day maintenance period last week, Russian energy giant Gazprom announced that gas deliveries via the Nord Stream 1 pipeline would not resume as scheduled. It blamed Western sanctions for the decision.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said, "problems with pumping (gas) arose due to sanctions that were imposed against" Russia.

Economy Minister Robert Habeck announced in a statement that following a fresh network stress test, two of the three remaining power plants will "remain available until mid-April 2023 in case needed."

The facilities as per AFP would be held in reserve in case they were needed to "make a further contribution to the electricity grid in southern Germany," where the development of renewable energy lagged behind that of the north.

According to Habeck, such a crisis is still "very unlikely" because Germany has "very high security of supply."

The Green Minister also emphasised that Germany was sticking to its plan to abandon nuclear power, with all plants being disconnected from the grid at the end of the year, and that it was not reversing course.

Music transcends war, six months into the Russian invasion Kyiv dances on

The Ukraine crisis has had a wide-ranging impact on many countries, but according to a recent report, the impact on the United States, given its military expenditures is one not many would've predicted.

Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reports that war has depleted "American stocks of some types of ammunition" which haven't been replenished on time, and that has sparked concerns among officials, who believe that this could jeopardize the US military's readiness in face of danger.

The United States has given Ukraine 16 Himars rocket launchers, thousands of rifles, drones, missiles, and other weapons over the last six months. The WSJ report citing defence sources says that a large portion of this, including the ammunition, has come directly from US inventory, depleting supplies intended for unforeseen threats.

Among the lethal weapons given to Ukraine are howitzers, which use 155mm combat rounds, the ammunition used to strike Iranian-backed terror groups in Syria last week. As of August 24, the US military has sent the war-torn nation 806,000 rounds of it, depleting its own stockpile to "uncomfortably low" levels, according to a defence official.

Since the United States is not involved in any significant military confrontation, the levels are not currently critical, the official continued, adding "It is not at the level we would like to go into combat."

The situation was "foreseeable", and was "easily fixable" says Mackenzie Eaglen, a senior fellow at the Washington-based American Enterprise Institute.

Reportedly, the military is currently conducting "an ammunitions industrial base deep dive in order to support Ukraine while safeguarding their "own supply needs."

The Army claimed it also requested $500 million in annual upgrades for its ammunition factories from Capitol Hill.

US' military aid to Ukraine left its own ammunition stockpiles 'uncomfortably low': Report

A day before Russia shuts the all-important Nord Stream 1 gas pipeline which runs from Russia to Germany under the Baltic Sea, German chancellor Olaf Scholz stated that Germany could counter the Russian gas threat.

A day before Russia shuts the all-important Nord Stream 1 gas pipeline which runs from Russia to Germany under the Baltic Sea, German chancellor Olaf Scholz stated that Germany could counter the Russian gas threat. "Germany is in a much better position in terms of security of supply than was foreseeable a couple of months ago," Scholz told reporters on Tuesday. "We can deal well with the threats we are confronted with from Russia, which uses gas as part of its strategy in the war against Ukraine." he further added. Read more: Gazprom to reduce gas deliveries to Engie, France's biggest gas supplier Olaf's statements come a day after Economy Minister Robert Habeck stated that Germany had filled its gas reserves to almost 83 per cent. "Germany's gas storage facilities are nearly 83 per cent full and will hit 85 per cent full in early September. As a result, the markets will calm and go down" said Habeck. Nord Stream 1 will be shut down from tomorrow It is pertinent to note that the Russian state-owned gas company, earlier this month announced that the Nord Stream 1 gas pipeline will remain shut down for three days for 'routine maintenance', starting tomorrow i.e August 31. In the backdrop of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Germany, much like the other European nations picked Kyiv's side. However, despite talking tough against Russia, Berlin still hasn't been able to get rid of Russian oil and gas, which accounted for more than 55 per cent of its requirement in 2021. Moreover, since February, the supplies from Russia have been reduced by more than 30 per cent, leading to an acute energy crisis in the country, with the price of oil and gas rising by almost four per cent compared to last year. Germany, akin to several other European nations is scampering for alternatives and looking to build reserves. However, the process is lengthy and one that cannot be achieved over the course of a few months. The perilous energy situation had forced the German government to splurge $14.93 billion last month to bail out Uniper, its largest importer of Russian gas. Ukraine reveals plan to hold Vladimir Putin accountable for his 'crime of aggression'

Winter is coming and with it Germany faces the looming threat of an energy shortage. To deal with this threat, the nation's government has approved a new bylaw that will turn buildings colder and leave streets darker.

The law prohibits heating public spaces like town halls and train waiting rooms above 19 degrees Celsius (66.2F). However, social institutions like hospitals are exempted from this rule.

As per Guardian, the legislation will come into force in about a week's time and will remain in place for six months.

At least 22 people were killed and 50 wounded after Russian missile strikes hit a Ukraine railway station on Wednesday, the 31st Independence Day of the war-ravaged country.

The strikes came as Ukraine marked its independence and incidentally also the six months of its war with Russia.

“I have just received information about a Russian missile strike on a railway station in the (central) Dnipropetrovsk region," Zelensky informed in a speech to the UN Security Council on Wednesday.

The Ukrainian leader added that the strike was "right on the wagons at Chaplino station. Four passenger cars are on fire", reported AFP.

Zelensky said he expects the number of casualties to increase. "Rescuers are working on the spot, but the death toll may rise, unfortunately. This is our daily life," Zelensky said.

Russian and Ukrainian spies detained while trying to break into a military facility in Albania

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Saturday warned that Russian fertilisers and agricultural products must reach world markets "unimpeded" or the world risks a global food crisis as early as next year.

"It is important that all governments and the private sector cooperate to bring them to market."

A grain export agreement was reached between Ukraine and Russia this July, the deal is backed by the UN and Turkiye, and implemented by the Joint Coordination Centre (JCC).

The accord grants Russia the freedom to export its fertilisers and agricultural goods in defiance of Western sanctions, however, as per Guterres, Russian shipments of these commodities are nevertheless encountering "obstacles".

"What we see here in Istanbul and in Odessa is only the more visible part of the solution. The other part of this package deal is the unimpeded access to the global markets of Russian food and fertiliser, which are not subject to sanctions," Guterres said.

He added that "Without fertiliser in 2022, there may not be enough food in 2023. Getting more food and fertiliser out of Ukraine and Russia is crucial to further calm commodity markets and lower prices for consumers."

Since August 1, 650,000 tonnes of grain and agricultural products from Ukraine have departed the ports of Odessa, Chornomorsk, and Pivdenny in accordance with the conditions of the July agreement.

Earlier, due to the February Russian invasion of Ukraine, exports of cereal from Kyiv, one of the top producers and exporters in the world, were halted for several months, sparking concerns about a possible worldwide food catastrophe.

Allow Russian shipments to move 'unimpeded' or risk a global food crisis, warns UN chief

Following Ukraine's last-week success in obtaining a two-year respite on its foreign debt from creditors, Fitch and S&P have raised the war-torn nation's credit rating.

On Thursday, as per AFP Fitch said that the August 11 deal alleviates "external debt servicing pressure, in the context of weakening international reserves and acute war-related spending needs," giving Kyiv breathing room on approximately $6 billion in principal and interest outstanding on Eurobonds.

In spite of the fact that Fitch has improved Ukraine's rating from RD to CC, the rating still indicates that there is still a chance of default.

"Despite this debt servicing relief, the 'CC' rating reflects unresolved debt sustainability risks resulting from Russia's attack and Ukraine's highly stressed public and external finances and macro-financial position," warned Fitch.

Just a day later, on Friday S&P joined Fitch in upgrading Ukraine's credit rating.

In a statement, the agency said that raising the country's foreign debt credit rating to CCC+ "reflects strong committed international financial support to Ukraine, coupled with eroding, albeit still relatively high, foreign exchange reserves."

"As a result, the near-term risks to the government's liquidity position and, more broadly, its capacity to honor commercial debt, including in foreign currency, appear manageable," AFP reported S&P as saying.

However, S&P stated this is based on the presumption that donors like the US and EU will continue to fund Kyiv in the months ahead.

It also said that a loan agreement with the IMF might lower Ukraine's burden.

Even with the increase, S&P cautioned that because of the ongoing conflict with Russia, Ukraine's ability to pay its debts on time "is highly dependent" on variables largely outside of government control".

Last week, Fitch had downgraded Ukraine's ratings to restricted default, while S&P Global had downgraded the nation to selective default.

In spite of the fact that Fitch has improved Ukraine's rating from RD to CC, the rating still indicates that there is still a chance of default. Watch | Gravitas: Weapons and explosives inside Ukraine's nuclear power plant "Despite this debt servicing relief, the 'CC' rating reflects unresolved debt sustainability risks resulting from Russia's attack and Ukraine's highly stressed public and external finances and macro-financial position," warned Fitch. Just a day later, on Friday S&P joined Fitch in upgrading Ukraine's credit rating. Also read | Systematic shelling of Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant by Ukraine risk of 'catastrophe': Putin In a statement, the agency said that raising the country's foreign debt credit rating to CCC+ "reflects strong committed international financial support to Ukraine, coupled with eroding, albeit still relatively high, foreign exchange reserves." "As a result, the near-term risks to the government's liquidity position and, more broadly, its capacity to honor commercial debt, including in foreign currency, appear manageable," AFP reported S&P as saying. However, S&P stated this is based on the presumption that donors like the US and EU will continue to fund Kyiv in the months ahead. Also read | US announces fresh arms package worth USD 775 mn for Ukraine It also said that a loan agreement with the IMF might lower Ukraine's burden. As Turkey warns of 'another Chernobyl', Zelensky says 'no peace' until Russia withdraws its troops

Fears of a nuclear disaster in Ukraine are growing every day as the country and its aggressor Russia, continue to engage in strikes around Europe's largest nuclear power plant, Zaporizhzhia.

For the last two weeks, the power plant has been at grave risk as shelling around it continues. This has raised concern among the international community, United Nations nuclear watchdog IAEA has even warned of impending nuclear disaster and has called for a demilitarised zone.

NATO too has called for an urgent need to inspect the power plant.

For insights into the looming tragedy, WION spoke to senior journalist Mac William Bishop, who is currently situated near Mykolaiv, Ukraine. When asked about the present scenario around the Zaporizhzhia power plant, Bishop noted that the situation "isn't clear" at this time.

As per him "Russian military forces are in control of the nuclear power plant however the Ukrainian workers that operate the plant still continue to go to work, maintain the plant and ensure its safe operation."

Bishop says that the situation isn’t that bad at the moment, but that there is a concern that "it could become quite bad, quite quickly"

Talking about the 1986 Chornobyl disaster, he said that Ukraine has been the scene of one of the worst nuclear accidents in human history, the fallout of which affected the whole of Europe and the site of which is still the scene of an exclusion zone "where people still can't live and possibly won't be able to for hundreds of years".

"There is a major concern obviously, when you talk about mixing nuclear reactors and high explosives, military grade weapons...the possibility that there could be a catastrophic failure is real and I think that is why so many actors in the international community are now concerned about what is happening in this location."

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has warned that the impending disaster would affect the whole of Europe and has requested international agencies to intervene.

In Bishop's view "It has also been the strategy of the Ukrainian government to try to get more international actors involved in this conflict and so of course that is also part of the reason why they are reaching out to the IAEA and UN for assistance in dealing with this issue"

Following the plant's strike in March, nuclear catastrophe was narrowly avoided. Fortunately, there was no radiation leak and there was no damage to the reactors. The plant has remained at the front lines of the Russia-Ukraine conflict ever since and the two nations continue to blame one another for the strike.

Talking about the ongoing blame game between Russia and Ukraine and his thoughts on who actually shelled the plant Bishop remarked "If Russian troops are occupying this nuclear power plant it would make little sense for the Ukrainians to shell the facility in order to try and liberate it. Meanwhile, why the Russians would shell a facility that they are controlling also makes little sense from a strategic and tactical standpoint."

He pointed out that "there is a very intensive propaganda, information war being conducted by both Ukraine and Russia, on social media platforms, through traditional news outlets," and that "each side is working to shape the narrative to their advantage"

"We simply don't have enough details about what exactly is happened or the nature of these shelling, the origin of it to make any kind of clear assessment at this point," he added.

As per reports, on Thursday (August 18), United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres will meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan in Kyiv.

The question is: Will the upcoming visits by the heads of the UN and a possible visit by the IAEA chief have any impact or potentially calm things down?

"I think that is certainly the hope of any responsible party that's looking at events around this nuclear power plant. Unfortunately, international organisations like the UN, they've not proven to be particularly affective in this conflict. But there are some signs of hope because there have been some isolated incidents in which the UN was able to achieve limited evacuations of non-combatants in key areas for example," said Bishop.

Although demilitarising the area around the nuclear power plant in Zaporizhzhia would resolve this immediate issue, it wouldn't address the larger issues or the conflict, he said, adding that it is important to keep in mind that this is a critical situation.

Finland limits visas to Russian tourists who were using nation as a gateway to Europe amid sanctions

On Tuesday, jailed Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny called for a systematic crackdown on Russian oligarchs who have been backing Vladimir Putin's military campaign in Ukraine.

Calling attention to the pre-existing sanctions by the United States, European Union or the United Kingdom on some of Russia's wealthiest, Navalny pointed out that only 46 of the Forbes list of Russia's 200 richest people have been hit by western sanctions.

The Russia-Ukraine war is in its fifth month with no signs of abating. During the course of the war, cyberspace also became a battleground with multiple attacks being reported by the media. Now, Energoatom, a nuclear operator in Ukraine, disclosed on its website on Tuesday what it called "the most powerful cyberattack since the start of the Russian invasion".

However, the nuclear operator claimed that none of its activities had been affected.

As per AFP, taking to Telegram, the operator posted that the Energoatom website was the target of an unprecedented hack since the beginning of the Russian invasion on August 16, 2022. and that the attack originated "from Russian territory".

According to Energoatom, the Russian "popular cyberarmy" group attacked the website for three hours using more than 7 million internet bots.

However the assault, "did not have a considerable impact on the work of the Energoatom website".

As per AFP, around noon, a Russian Telegram channel with the name "popular cyberarmy" urged its users to assault the website of the Ukrainian nuclear operator.

However, by Tuesday, it had declared a "change" of course, directing supporters to a new target — the sluggish website of the Ukrainian Institute of National Remembrance.

The cyberattack occurs as resentment rises over the country's southern Zaporizhzhia power facility, which Russian forces took control of in March just after invading its pro-EU neighbour.

Concerns about a nuclear catastrophe have been raised after Russia and Ukraine both accused the other of shelling the largest nuclear facility in Europe.
