US State Department said on Wednesday that senior US and Russian officials on Wednesday restarted talks to ease tensions between the world's largest nuclear weapons power. It has been agreed to reconvene in September.

After informal consultations aimed at "determining topics for expert working groups" in the next round, the two sides agreed to reconvene in late September, State Department spokesman Ned Price said in a statement.

Price called the discussions "professional and substantive". He further said that US side discussed its policy priorities the current international security environment, "the prospects for new nuclear arms control" and the format for further talks.

The decision to meet again showed the sides understand the need to resolve arms control disputes, a senior State Department official said, that have seen an end to several Cold War-era treaties, including one that limited intermediate-range missiles.

"We know we have a responsibility as the largest nuclear weapons states to find a way to improve strategic stability to deal with a deteriorating arms control architecture," the official briefed reporters on condition of anonymity. he was quoted by Reuters.

US-Russia in nuclear talks huddle in Geneva

US President Joe Biden on Tuesday accused Russia of seeking to disrupt 2022 elections by disseminating "misinformation". His statement came as he visited office of the director of national intelligence near Washington.

Midterm elections are due in the US in the fall of 2022. In these elections all seats of House of Representatives and one-third of the Senate will be on the ballot.

Washington recently accused Beijing of carrying out the massive hack in March of Microsoft Exchange, and the White House has also repeatedly called on Russia to take action against ransomware attacks originating from within the country.

Russia blocked 49 Navalny-linked websites, says aide

Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin on visited the disputed Kuril Islands and said authorities wanted to establish a free economic zone there. This sparked a protest from Japan.

Kuril Islands are located north of Japan's Hokkaido island. The islands have been controlled by Russia since Soviet troops captured them in the dying days of Second World War.

The territorial dispute has kept the two countries from signing a peace accord that would formally end their wartime hostilities.&nbsp;

During his visit to Iturup, the largest and northernmost island of the archipelago, Mishustin proposed exempting the islands from customs duty and reducing taxes for businesses.

"This set of measures is unprecedented," Mishustin said.

"We may also think about exempting from taxpayer obligations those who work and invest here," Mishustin added. 
He added that the measures would be extended to the main activities on the island with some exemptions, such as the production of alcohol.

"This special regime will help intensify economic activity here. I will report these proposals to the Russian president and a relevant decision will be made," Mishustin said.&nbsp;

Japanese foreign ministry issued a protest over Mishustin's visit and summoned Russian ambassador.

In a post on Facebook, ambassador Mikhail Galuzin called the protest "unacceptable".

The head of Russia's government "visits Russian regions as he sees fit," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told journalists.

"There is political will on Russia's part to develop good relations with Japan, we value our economic cooperation very much," Peskov added.

The Russian foreign ministry said for its part that it summoned Japan's ambassador and expressed its protest against the "unfriendly steps" taken by Tokyo.

The 39-year-old Roman&nbsp;Fedortsov, who is from Russia and works on commercial trawlers, had shared the images on&nbsp;social media, which&nbsp;grabbed the attention of thousands of people.&nbsp;

The fisherman also&nbsp;goes&nbsp;till 3,300 feet below the surface to&nbsp;catch fish&nbsp;sometimes.&nbsp;The light is minimal at these depths.&nbsp;&nbsp;

"The last time I faced death was in 1941. Back then, my right lung was injured during the battle for Moscow. But I was rather young at the time and managed to recover promptly," he told Reuters.

"This time around, I was largely supported by doctors despite several instances where I was on the verge of losing hope and courage. I am extremely thankful to all of them."

Bagayev is one a shrinking group of veterans who are revered in Russia for their role in defeating Nazi Germany. In May, he took part in the annual victory parade on Square Parade alongside President Vladimir Putin.

"It was hard, but I could see the doctors fighting, and I helped them," said Bagayev, who was wearing a military uniform festooned with medals when discharged from hospital.

"They are the ones who are the heroes," Bagayev, who was last year promoted to a rank of colonel in reserve, said of his doctors.

Bagayev lived through many of the now defunct Soviet Union's tumultuous chapters and was twice wounded during the war - once gravely.

"He is a real trooper, he kept remembering his war-time wound and hardships in (the Battle of) Moscow and those memories helped him during his time in hospital," Bagayev's doctor, Valentina Rakitskaya, said.

After the war, Bagayev worked in the Soviet republic of Kazakhstan where he helped build the Baikonur cosmodrome which sent the first man into space, Yuri Gagarin, in 1961.

Bagayev said a breathing technique which he had learnt from Soviet cosmonauts helped him recover from COVID-19.

As a devoted member of Russia's opposition Communist party he plans to help them campaign ahead of a parliamentary election in September, but he said his first goal was to start walking again without help.

"This was never about a figure but a husband honouring his commitment to his family," a spokesperson for Akhmedova said, rejecting a claim from a spokesperson for her former husband that she would have been better off not pursuing the legal action. 
 
The Times newspaper said Akhmedova would receive around 150 million pounds, which would also have to cover her legal costs. 
 
Akhmedova's legal action was funded through a specialist financing company, Burford Capital, which said it would receive approximately $103 million for its efforts to enforce the 454 million pound judgment. 
 
Burford said the settlement would boost its operating profit this year by around $20 million. 
 
"In aggregate, Burford expects the matter to have generated more than $70 million of realized gain over the life of the investment," it said in a statement.

"There are more and more anticyclones in northern regions which increases the risk of fires," he said.&nbsp;

According to many scientists, Russia -- especially its Siberian and Arctic regions -- is among the countries most exposed to climate change.&nbsp;

Moscow has said it could bomb British naval vessels if there are more such actions by the British navy off Crimea.

On Saturday, Russia's Black Sea Fleet said warplanes from its aviation units and those of the southern military district had taken part in training drills.

"Aircraft crews ... conducted training flights over the Black Sea, practicing missile and bombing strikes against simulated enemy ships," it was quoted as saying by the RIA news agency.

The drills involved aircraft including Sukhoi Su-30SM multi-purpose fighters, Sukhoi Su-24M bombers, Sukhoi Su-34 fighter-bombers and Sukhoi Su-27 fighter jets, the report said.

The exercise comes as NATO, Ukraine and allies conduct their large-scale Sea Breeze drills in the region.

Those drills are set to last two weeks and involve about 5,000 military personnel from NATO and other allies, and around 30 ships and 40 aircraft, with U.S. missile destroyer USS Ross and the U.S. Marine Corps taking part.

Moscow had called for the exercise to be cancelled and the Russian defence ministry has said it will react to safeguard national security if necessary.

The health ministry called the campaign an emergency measure - as coronavirus cases in&nbsp;Russia&nbsp;sharply rise and vaccination rates remain low.

Muscovites had mixed opinions.

"I think it's better to get vaccinated than to tighten the restrictions. Otherwise, our economy will collapse, and then there will be nothing to save. It makes no sense."

"Many people don't get the flu vaccine either. Everyone should have their own opinion, everyone is responsible for their own health and does whatever is right for them. I believe that this (vaccination) shouldn't be done under pressure."

A Ukrainian&nbsp;soldier&nbsp;was&nbsp;killed&nbsp;in the conflict-ridden east of the country in a mortar and grenade attack launched from territory held by pro-Russian separatists, the military said Saturday.

The Ukrainian&nbsp;army&nbsp;has been locked in simmering trench conflict with breakaway fighters in the eastern Donetsk and Lugansk regions since 2014 when Moscow annexed the Crimean peninsula.

Speaking at the International security conference in Moscow on Wednesday, visiting Myanmar&nbsp;junta leader Senior General Min Aung Hlaing said it is important for the international community to keep shared values and unite for peace and stability.

The Junta leader said, "Multiple pieces of evidence suggest a large-scale interference of foreign countries with some sovereign states' businesses for the sake of democracy and human rights. Nowadays is a good time to reject hegemony and unilateralism."

British destroyer ship Defender docked at Georgian port of Batumi on Saturday. This is the same destroyer that angered Russia by sailing through waters off Crimea.

Russia said it had fired warning shots at the Defender, and later threatened to bomb British naval vessels in the Black Sea if there were further "provocative" actions off Crimea, which Russia annexed from Ukraine in 2014. The peninsula is still recognised internationally as part of Ukraine.

Defender's commander Vince Owen said that British Navy was committed to "providing reassurances and security in the region, and incredible deterrence to those who seek to undermine global security"

On Wednesday, Russia had dropped bombs in Defender's path on Wednesday as it was passing Crimea. Russia considered Defender's movements an incursion into Russian waters.

Britain said the Defender had sailed through waters belonging to Ukraine, and that any shots fired had been part of a pre-announced Russian gunnery exercise. It said no bombs had been dropped.
