Tory Leadership Election: 8 out of 10 candidates qualify in round 1

After the former Health Secretary Sajid Javid pulled out of the contest, a total of eight Conservatives are now in the race to replace Boris Johnson as party leader and British prime minister.

After the former Health Secretary Sajid Javid pulled out of the contest, a total of eight Conservatives are now in the race to replace Boris Johnson as party leader and British prime minister. The remaining candidates have won enough nominations from their colleagues to go through to the first round of voting on Wednesday. The candidates had to get the support of at least 20 Tory MPs to be in the race. The remaining candidates are: Kemi Badenoch, Suella Braverman, Jeremy Hunt, Penny Mordaunt, Rishi Sunak, Liz Truss, Tom Tugendhat and Nadhim Zahawi. Reports have mentioned that just minutes before the deadline, Javid withdrew. he said that he "looked forward to seeing the debate unfold". Apart from the health minister, junior minister Rehman Chishti also pulled out of the contest. The next process will include the first round of voting, which will take place on Wednesday. If a candidate gets less than 30 votes from their fellow MPs, she/he will have to drop out. Further votes, over the next few days, will decide the final two candidates, who will then go to a full ballot of around 160,000 Conservative Party members over the summer. Currently, former finance minister Rishi Sunak and foreign minister Liz Truss are top contenders for the top job. New UK PM will be announced on September 5 The ruling Conservative party earlier said that the new prime minister to replace Johnson will be announced on September 5. Graham Brady, chairman of the Conservatives' influential 1922 Committee, told reporters: "We do need to make sure there is a decent amount of time before the result is announced on 5th September." Sajid Javid pulls out; eight candidates in race to succeed UK PM Johnson

Eight Conservatives will fight it out to succeed Boris Johnson as party leader and British prime minister after winning enough nominations from their colleagues to go through to the first round of voting on Wednesday.

Only two hopefuls failed to secure the 20 necessary nominations, leaving a wide field of candidates seeking to win the backing of the party with promises of tax cuts, honesty and serious government - a contrast to Johnson who was forced to announce he would resign after a series of scandals.

Former finance minister Rishi Sunak is the bookmakers' favourite, and among those he will be taking on are his successor Nadhim Zahawi and foreign minister Liz Truss in what is becoming an increasingly bitter and divisive contest.

The next British leader faces a daunting in-tray while support for the Conservatives is also falling, polls show.

Britain's economy is facing rocketing inflation, high debt, and low growth as people grapple with the tightest squeeze on their finances in decades. All of this is set against a backdrop of an energy crunch exacerbated by the war in Ukraine which has sent fuel prices soaring.

As the contest intensifies, rival campaigns stepped up private criticism of each other and pointed to either financial or other questions hanging over their opponents.

Sunak kicked off his campaign by portraying himself as the serious candidate, promising "grown-up" honesty "not fairy tales", seeking to contrast himself with the extensive tax cuts pledged by most of the other candidates.

"It is not credible to promise lots more spending and lower taxes," Sunak said, saying tax cuts could only come after soaring inflation was tackled.

As finance minister, Sunak set Britain on course to have its biggest tax burden since the 1950s after he oversaw a huge rise in government spending during the coronavirus pandemic, and most of the other hopefuls have turned their fire on him by saying they would oversee cuts immediately.

Dirty tricks

Sunak has the widest support among colleagues who have publicly expressed their view.

Penny Mordaunt, a junior trade minister who is also heavily tipped, topped a poll of Conservative party members and she too has tried to strike a more measured tone on tax, saying that now is not the time to cut government spending.

"The others will obviously try to secure votes, they will try to put up flares for particular caucuses," she told LBC radio. "This is not the time to be making radical tax policies and promises."

Attorney General Suella Braverman; the former health and foreign minister Jeremy Hunt; Tom Tugendhat, chair of parliament's foreign affairs committee; and Kemi Badenoch, a former junior minister who is scooping up support on the right wing of the party, are the other candidates to enter the first round of the contest.

Transport Secretary Grant Shapps earlier became the first candidate to end his bid, throwing his support behind Sunak, while Home Secretary (interior minister) Priti Patel announced she would not be standing.

Foreign Secretary Truss received the backing of two ministers closest to Johnson - Nadine Dorries and Jacob Rees-Mogg - who have both been critical of Sunak.

Dorries accused Sunak of using "dirty tricks" to manipulate the leadership contest, with votes being loaned to Hunt's campaign because they view him as easier to beat.

Sunak's team did not respond to a request for comment.

The 1922 Committee of Conservative members of parliament which is organising the contest says the field will soon be whittled down with repeated votes in the next few weeks, with the final two then selected by the fewer than 200,000 party members by July 21.

The winner, and Britain's new prime minister, will be announced on Sept. 5.

United Kingdom to have new Prime Minister by September 5

Britain's new Finance Minister Nadhim Zahawi has inherited at a point of time when the country is facing a cost-of-living crisis that risks pushing the UK economy into recession.

A recent report by the Observer suggested that before he was promoted, a flag was raised by officials over the financial affairs of Zahawi.

As per the report, civil servants in the cabinet office's propriety and ethics team are said to have alerted United Kingdom Prime Minister Boris Johnson to a HM Revenue and Customs "flag" over Zahawi before his appointment. Despite that, he was appointed Johnson.

As quoted by the media outlet, one source said this weekend: "It's extraordinary that flags were raised ahead of Nadhim's appointment by the Downing Street proprietary team. These sorts of concerns would stop someone receiving an MBE or OBE. The idea he could be chancellor or even prime minister is unbelievable."

As per the report, the National Crime Agency (NCA) has apparently investigated Zahawi, the Independent reported last week. There is no official comment on why he was probed. The investigation also did not lead to any action and there is no suggestion of wrongdoing.

Johnson appointed Nadhim Zahawi as finance minister after Rishi Sunak resigned from the post. Zahawi, 55, inherits an economy that will face immediate pressure to do more to help struggling households and to lower taxes which are on course to hit their highest level in decades.

Zahawi was previously the education secretary. He was replaced as education secretary by Michelle Donelan, previously a junior education minister.

Did Boris Johnson ignore when flags were raised ahead of Nadhim Zahawi's appointment?

United Kingdom's foreign minister Liz Truss has joined the race to become Tory leader and the nation's next prime minister. Truss entered the fractious contest on Sunday, by announcing her candidacy in the Daily Telegraph newspaper. AFP reports that Truss declared that she had "a clear vision of where we need to be, and the experience and resolve to get us there". The foreign minister is the 11th person to enter their bid trying to replace Boris Johnson and as of now, she is seen as the frontrunner in the nail-biting contest. Before Truss, the former defence minister Penny Mordaunt had submitted their stake in the Tory leadership contest.

Former finance minister Rishi Sunak, who played a monumental part in sparking the cabinet uprising that resulted in Johnson's forced resignation on Thursday, is currently the front-runner.

Sunak and Javid both announced their resignations late on Tuesday, which prompted scores of their more junior peers to do the same and forced their former boss to step down as Tory leader 36 hours later.

After declaring his bid via social media late Friday, Sunak, who was ahead of Truss in the most recent survey of party members, received rapid support from numerous prominent MPs.

However, in a sign of the animosity that can taint the race, he has also come under fire from Johnson supporters. According to the Financial Times, Sunak's departure caused "huge anger" inside the departing prime minister's team, with one senior official, referring to him as "a treacherous bastard."

How will the party choose between the candidates?

As the number of contenders grows, several senior politicians have stressed that the field must be narrowed fast and that the final two-person shortlist to be presented to members should be determined within weeks, before parliament's summer holiday begins on July 21.

"Clearly what we would want to do, and I think even the candidates would admit this is, is to eliminate some of those that are clearly not going to get enough support to get in the last two at a relatively early stage," Geoffrey Clifton-Brown, the 1922 committee's treasurer, told Times Radio.

As Britain deals with the toxic confluence of rising inflation, widespread cost-of-living rises, a stalled economy, and relatively high tax rates, taxation is expected to be a prominent aspect of the race, along with candidates' stances on Brexit.

Eight candidates have already entered the already contentious leadership race after United Kingdom's embattled Prime Minister Boris Johnson tendered his resignation, amid growing discontent. As per an AFP report, the list now includes heavyweights such as former health ministers Sajid Javid and Jeremy Hunt and the current Chancellor of the Exchequer Nadhim Zahawi. Just hours earlier, the traditionally volatile political race had gained another contender after Transport Secretary Grant Shapps announced that he too will run. The Conservative Party's so-called 1922 Committee of legislators will gather on Monday to decide on the timing and regulations for the expected months-long campaign, which may pit more than a dozen Conservative MPs and various factions of the ruling party against one another. 'Ready For Rishi': Former UK Finance Minister Rishi Sunak bids to replace Boris Johnson

UK PM Boris Johnson has stepped down as a leader of ruling Conservative Party. He announced his decision on Thursday (July 7) in a press address outside his official 10 Downing Street residence. Johnson, who came to power three years ago was increasingly cornered due many scandals within his party. The 'partygate' or the alcohol-fuelled parties at Downing Street right when country was under strict lockdown saw him apologise to the parliament number of times.

With Johnson stepping down, speculations are on as to who would succeed him as the leader of the ruling party and UK's next PM. Here are the contenders widely held to have good shot at the top post.

Rishi Sunak

Rishi Sunak was UK's first Hindu chancellor of the exchequer. He quit on Tuesday citing many scandals within the government. He has been favourite to succeed Johnson but his prospects are dented by questions over his private wealth and family's tax arrangements.

Sunak, 42, has a high profile on social media, and won plaudits for shoring up the economy during the pandemic.

His resignation from the Johnson government has again made him a favourite.

Jeremy Hunt

Jeremy Hunt (55), former foreign and health secretary lost leadership contest to Boris Johnson in 2019.

Hunt sent a thinly veiled campaign message for a new leadership bid last month, arguing that under Johnson "we are no longer trusted by the electorate" and "we are set to lose the next general election".

But the fluent Japanese speaker lacks Johnson's charisma. His pre-pandemic record as health secretary was recently savaged by a Johnson ally.

Liz Truss

Foreign Secretary Liz Truss, 46, commands popularity among her Conservative Party colleagues. She is liked for her outspokenness and willingness to go on the political attack.

But that has also stoked questions about her judgement, for instance when in February she encouraged Britons to fight in Ukraine. Critics say her leadership posturing is too overt.

Sajid Javid

Javid, former health secretary in Johnson's government was another high-profile name besides Rishi Sunak to quit on Tuesday. He previously resigned as finance minister in 2020

Like Sunak, he also faces questions about his personal wealth and tax affairs.

Ben Wallace

The defence secretary, 52, is considered to be straight talking and has a competent image. He recently topped polls of Tory grassroots' preferred next leader due to his role in the Ukraine crisis. He is a former army officer.

Nadhim Zahawi

Zahawi has been newly appointed as finance minister. He was previously praised for overseeing UK's pandemic vaccines rollout.

Zahawi is a former refugee from Iraq who came to Britain as a child speaking no English. Before entering politics, he co-founded the prominent polling company YouGov.

Tom Tugendhat

The former army officer, 49, is a prominent backbencher who chairs parliament's influential Foreign Affairs Committee.

Tugendhat has indicated he will stand in any leadership contest but there is no love lost between him and Johnson loyalists.

A hawk on China, he has been critical of the government's handling of the troop withdrawal from Afghanistan.

Penny Mordaunt

Mordaunt, 49, is the first woman to have been UK defence secretary and is currently a junior trade minister.

The Royal navy reservist is seen as likely to run but considered a long shot.

A strong Brexit supporter and key figure in the 2016 "Leave" campaign, she has been tipped as a potential unity candidate who could draw support from the Conservative party's warring factions.

Dominic Raab

Deputy prime minister and justice secretary Dominic Raab, 48, led the country when Johnson was in intensive care in hospital with Covid-19 in 2020.

The former lawyer and karate black belt is seen as a reliable ally.

But his move to justice from the post of foreign secretary was seen as a demotion after he initially failed to cut short a holiday as the Afghan capital Kabul fell to the Taliban.

UK PM Boris Johnson resigns, know who can succeed him

As Boris stares at exit, Mordaunt, Sunak lead race to 10 Downing Street

Nadhim Zahawi will replace Rishi Sunak as the new British finance minister after the latter tendered his resigning on Tuesday. Sunak and Education Minister Sajid Javid both decided to step down from their roles following the controversy over Boris Johnson’s involvement in the row surrounding Tory MP Chris Pincher.

Zahawi has previously served in various roles for the government and after his run as the vaccines minister, he was promoted to education secretary in Boris Johnson's last reshuffle.

Steve Barclay, who was previously the chief of staff for Downing Street, was appointed the new Health Secretary. In his resignation letter, Sunak wrote that "the public rightly expect government to be conducted properly, competently and seriously", adding: "I believe these standards are worth fighting for and that is why I am resigning."

The resignations came as a huge blow to Prime Minister Boris Johnson as they made it clear that they have lost faith in him over the appointment of Pincher to the role of deputy chief whip.

Pincher had to quit his job last week after claims that he groped two men at a private members' club came to light and reports suggested that Johnson knew about the incident from 2019.

Johnson came out to say that he should have sacked Pincher back in 2019 but the apology was not accepted by the party members, and it resulted in the two massive resignations.

Average British workers’ wages will be down, productivity will be hit, and UK’s competitive edge will be lost during the rest of the decade due to Brexit, a new study has claimed.

The Resolution Foundation think tank’s report, in collaboration with the London School of Economics, has said that splitting away from the EU would make Britain “poorer” during the 2020s and accentuate the cost of living crisis.

The study said that the immediate impact of Brexit was already clear, with a “depreciation-driven inflation spike” increasing the cost of living for households and cutting investment.

“A less open Great Britain is expected to be poorer and less productive,” it said, according to The Guardian.

The study estimated that UK’s labour productivity will dwindle by 1.3 per cent by the end of the decade through changes in trading rules, contributing to weaker wage growth.

They said that real pay was set to be £470 lower per worker each year, on average, if Britain goes ahead with its Brexit plan.

It further said that the region would see a 2.7 per cent fall in manufacturing output by 2030 compared with a scenario in which the UK voted to remain in the EU in 2016.

The report also added that the northeast of England is expected to be hit hardest by Brexit, since its firms are particularly reliant on exports to the EU.

The report is authored by LSE academic Swati Dhingra, an outspoken Brexit critic picked by chancellor Rishi Sunak to sit on the Bank of England’s interest-rate setting monetary policy committee from August.

Rishi Sunak, the British Chancellor, has been accused of wasting £11 billion ($14 billion) of taxpayers' money by paying too much interest on the government's debt.

Sunak's refusal to insure against interest rate rises on £900 billion in reserves accumulated through quantitative easing caused the losses, according to the National Institute of Economic and Social Research.

The Conservatives have already accused Gordon Brown, Labour's former chancellor, of losing money when he sold some of the UK's gold reserves at rock-bottom prices, but Sunak's losses are far greater.

Sunak's actions had left the country with "a massive cost and high continued exposure to interest rate risk," according to Professor Jagjit Chadha, the institute's director.

The losses were described by Labour as "astronomical" and the government was accused of "playing fast and loose" with public finances.

The Treasury responded by stating that it has a "clear financial strategy" in place to meet the government's funding requirements.

According to the Financial Times, the Bank of England generated £895 billion through its quantitative easing programme, the majority of which was spent on government bonds purchased by pension funds and other investors.

The Bank of England had to pay interest at its official rate when such investors put the funds in commercial bank deposits.

When the official rate was still 0.1 percent last year, the institute recommended the government convert the debt into longer-term government bonds to protect the expense of servicing it from rising interest rates.

UK: Rishi Sunak accused of wasting $14 billion in debt interest payments

UK Finance Minister Rishi Sunak on Thursday unveiled his government’s £15 billion (US $18.85 billion) cost-of-living bailout package to help millions of people struggling with the worst cost-of-living crisis in decades.

The announcement comes in the wake of soaring energy costs, which rose by more than 40 per cent following the Russia-Ukraine war.

Apart from the energy crisis, UK is also battling one of its highest inflation in 40 years that has severely dented the pockets of average consumers in the country, with average earnings seeing a drop by 1.9 per cent from a year earlier, the biggest decline since 2013.

With the shadow of Susan Grey's report on lockdown parties hanging over Boris Johnson’s government’s head, Sunak addressed the House of Commons, by talking about the inflation scenario, saying that the government cannot “solve every problem”.

But Sunak said he would not allow people to be “set so far back they might never recover” - boasting that cost-of-living support now totals £37billion this year.

He cautioned that inflation was becoming entrenched, saying: “Over the course of the year the situation has evolved and got more serious,” Daily Mail reported.

Among the slew of announcements include:

1) One-off payments of different amounts will be given to the most vulnerable - the elderly, those with disabilities, and those with the lowest incomes

2) All households will receive a £400 discount on energy bills

3) Eight million of the lowest income families will also get a one-off payment of £650, Sunak says

4) He confirms a temporary windfall tax on oil and gas giants to fund the payments - a move called for by Labour

5) There will be a one-off disability cost of living payment of £150, and pensioners will get £300

6) The UK government has also introduced a £5 billion ($6.3 billion) tax on the windfall profits of its oil and gas companies.

7) Sunak unveiled the new 25% tax on the profits of energy producers such as BP and Shell on Thursday. The levy will be phased out once oil and gas prices fall back to more normal levels, he said.

8) He said, “The oil and gas sector is making extraordinary profits, not as the result of recent changes, risk-taking or innovation or efficiency, but as the result of surging global commodity prices."

UK Civil Servant Sue Gray, whose probe report on the lockdown-breaching parties in Downing Street and Whitehall is set to be released, is reportedly planning to “name and shame” the No.10 staff who broke the Covid rules.

According to BBC, the senior civil servant is expected to publish her full report on the lockdown parties next week after the Metropolitan Police finished their investigation.

The Met have not named any of the 83 individuals who have been fined. UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson and his wife Carrie have each received one fine.

Reports say that Gray is contacting the ones she wants to name, ahead of the publication of her report.

Those who are expected to be named have been given until 5 pm on Sunday to respond to information Gray intends to publish about them.

Meanwhile, Johnson said it would be "entirely up to Sue Gray" whom she names when publishing her report, adding, "Fingers crossed, that will be very soon."

‘Partygate’: UK Civil Servant Sue Gray to ‘name and shame’ Covid rule-breakers, say reports

The controversy regarding the wealth of England’s finance minister Rishi Sunak and wife Akshata Murty has been brewing for quite some time. Murty, the daughter of IT firm Infosys co-founder Narayan Murty, currently has 0.9 per cent stake in the company and that earned her £11.6m in dividend income last year. As a result, Sunak became the first major politician to feature in the Sunday Times rich list as the pair was placed in the 222nd spot with an estimated £730m valuation.

This was the first time since 1989 that a major politician was part of the list and with the country going through inflation and soaring fuel prices, this can put Sunak under the spotlight once again.

According to The Guardian, Sunak owns four houses worth an estimated £15m, including a £5m Santa Monica penthouse. Justice secretary Dominic Raab reacted to Sunak’s inclusion to the list and said that this does not mean that he is not in touch with the struggles of the general public.

“He’s a fantastic example of someone who’s been successful in business, who’s coming to make a big impact in public service. I think we want more of those people,” Raab told Times Radio.

I think it’s fantastic that you’ve got someone of British-Indian origin, showing all people in our country that you can get to the top of politics. And frankly, I think if I understood correctly, the Sunday Times rich list was a reflection of not just him but his wife. His wife is an incredibly successful entrepreneur in her own right.” Raab explained while commenting on Sunday Times list.
