The race to become United Kingdom’s next Prime Minister was hit with an unexpected roadblock on Tuesday as the voting by the Conservative Party members had to be delayed. The decision was taken after reports from the GCHQ spy agency that cyber hackers were trying to change the ballots, according to The Telegraph. While the agency did not specify the source of the threat, they said that the process was vulnerable to cyber-attacks and advised against going forward with the process. That resulted in the Conservative Party making it clear that new members will no longer be able to change their votes later in the Prime Minister race, the report further stated.

Conservative Party voting for next UK PM delayed after GCHQ hacking alert: Report

Voting begins in Britain's prime minister contest, Truss wins cabinet backing

The race for UK's next PM is on as the voting to select the new leader of the Conservative party is set to begin today. Foreign secretary Liz Truss is leading ahead of former finance minister Rishi Sunak.

UK: Tory leadership race reaches final leg, Sunak trailing behind Truss

Trailing in the race to the keys of 10, Downing Street, Tory leader Rishi Sunak has announced that if voted to power, he will reduce the basic rates of income tax by 20 per cent by 2029.

Sunak stated that his immediate target was tackling inflation. However, once that is achieved, his government will slash one pence off income tax in 2024, as announced in his tenure as the chancellor. Afterwards, another three pence will be struck off the income tax, come 2029.

Betting on his tax-cut programme, Sunak described it as a radical yet realistic vision.

“It is a radical vision but it is also a realistic one and there are some core principles that I’m simply not prepared to compromise on, whatever the prize,” said Sunak, who further added, “Firstly I will never get taxes down in a way that just puts inflation up. Secondly, I will never make promises I can’t pay for. And thirdly I will always be honest about the challenges we face.”

Currently embroiled in a race with foreign secretary Liz Truss, Sunak has been losing ground lately. After Boris Johnson resigned from the PM post, Sunak was dubbed the clear front runner. However, in recent times, some of his statements and actions have changed the tide in favour of Truss.

Moreover, Sunak's future tax cut promise only comes in the backdrop of Truss announcing immediate tax cuts, which has propelled her popularity amongst the masses, especially the 175,000 conservative party members who received their postal ballots on Monday.

Inflation is at an all-time high of 9.4 per cent in the UK. Thus, it will be interesting to observe if Truss' populist measure of immediate tax cuts agrees with the economy or not. Sunak is proposing a realistic way to reduce the cuts but the public is swaying with Truss.

The battle to become the UK’s next prime minister descended into fierce clashes as Rishi Sunak launched repeated attacks on the economic policies of the Liz Truss in their first head-to-head TV debate.

UK PM Race: Truss and Sunak trade blows in first TV debate

The first head-to-head TV debate between the UK Prime Minister hopefuls—Rishi Sunak and Liz Truss—witnessed some acrimonious scenes with former vice chancellor Sunak launching tirades against the British foreign secretary’s economic policies.

The two Conservative leadership contenders traded blows over tax cuts, China and inflation in the hour-long debate hosted by the BBC.

While Sunak said that Truss’ tax cut plan would "tip millions of people into misery" and can cost the Conservatives the next election, Truss shot back saying that tax rises brought in by her former cabinet colleague would lead to a recession.

Liz Truss promised that she would undo the rise in National Insurance, a planned rise in corporation tax, and would temporarily scrap green levies on energy bills to be paid for through borrowing if elected to be the leader of the Conservative Party.

Economy, inflation

Sunak said that his focus would be to tame inflation and that he would not cut taxes until the prices are under control.

Sunak asserted that the coronavirus pandemic had created a large bill and that placing it on the "country's credit card" would "pass the tab to our children and grandchildren".

He described Truss’ plans on the economy as “not conservative”, while interrupting her at one point to say, “You promised almost £40bn of unfunded tax cuts, £40bn more borrowing,” reports The Guardian.

“That is the country’s credit card. It’s our children and grandchildren … everyone here … who are going to have to pick up the tab for that.”

China

On China, both candidates accused each other of not having been tough enough on the Asian giant in the past.

While Truss criticised Sunak’s calls for a tougher stance on China, saying that the Treasury just last month was calling for closer bilateral and economic ties.

Sunak accused Truss of making assertions about a “golden era” between China and the UK.

“I think that was almost a decade ago,” the foreign secretary snapped back.

Boris Johnson

There have been reports swirling around that Boris Johnson might make a political comeback despite announcing to step down next month.

Both the candidates, while talking about Johnson’s performance in handling the government, ruled out a role for the current PM in any government they might lead.

The former chancellor heaped praise on Johnson for handling Brexit and the pandemic, but said that he had quit as a matter of principle over the PM's "conduct" and the fact that they had "very different views about the direction of travel on the economy".

Acknowledging that the prime minister made mistakes, Truss said that they were not "sufficient" enough for the Conservative Party to have "rejected him".

According to the Daily Telegraph newspaper, Johnson indicated to Lord Cruddas at Chequers on Friday that he “wants to fight the next general election as leader of the Conservative party”.

Rishi Sunak labels himself the underdog in race to become next UK Prime Minister

What a rollercoaster ride British citizens have been on since Brexit, COVID-19 and now the fatal energy blow being delivered to hardworking families in this country. From April this year electricity and gas tariffs have gone up by over 50 per cent on average, thanks in part to the price cap being removed by Ofgem and a free for all in a capitalist energy market. The working poor, pensioners, benefit claimants and ordinary folks will have to make a serious choice of whether to feed themselves and their families or heat their homes to keep everyone warm and comfortable. A disgrace for the United Kingdom as it belongs to the G7 club of rich nations.

While rising energy prices will affect most households across the country, they are more likely to disproportionately affect those on the lowest incomes. In the financial year ending in 2020, the poorest 10 per cent of households spent more than half (54 per cent) of their average weekly expenditure (£298.90) on essentials such as housing (including electricity and gas), food and transport. Those in the richest 10 per cent, in comparison, spend 42 per cent of their average weekly spend of £1,073.20 on the same essentials. As usual, during any economic crisis, it’s the working class that suffers the most and are often blamed, even though it’s the fault of our elected politicians and their lobbyist friends and donors.

A perfect storm is brewing for many households in Scotland as a decrease in wages, increase in high food prices, and from April a massive energy price hike. Rishi Sunak, ex-chancellor and now an aspiring prime minister, has not extended the £20 Universal Credit last year as that would have help cushioned the impact a little. The current rate of pay and benefits don’t fit well with a rich nation like the UK. Prepayment meters will see the highest price rise and they are mostly used by the poor and most vulnerable in our society. It beggars’ belief that the citizenry can be so easily misled and benefit claimants scapegoated again and again for the deals made by politicians to rob the taxpayers via their friends and families' companies which are setup simply to steal money officially through various tax havens.

Overall, considering predicted energy price increases alongside a reduction in real wages and the planned increase in national insurance contributions, the Resolution Foundation feared a “living standards catastrophe” in 2022. It is estimated that taxes and energy bills would have risen by an average of £1,200 per household since April 2022 under current government plans.

What is cost of living crisis in rich Britain?

The race to 10 Downing Street has boiled down to 2 candidates. Rishi Sunak & Liz Truss. Who is Liz Truss? What's her story? Can she become UK'S next Prime Minister? Palki Sharma reports.

Gravitas: The story of Liz Truss

The Tory leadership race is now entered into its final leg. After leading in the earlier rounds the former Chancellor of the Exchequer, Rishi Sunak now seems to be falling behind.

UK PM Race: Poll shows Rishi Sunak losing in final round

The race to become the prime minister of the United Kingdom has narrowed down to just two as Conservative MPs on Wednesday (July 20) chose former finance minister Rishi Sunak and foreign secretary Liz Truss to battle to be the party leader and the prime minister. Party members will decide the final name.
In the latest Tory leadership ballot, Penny Mordaunt was eliminated after getting 105 votes. Sunak led the last of five ballots of Tory lawmakers, winning 137 votes, ahead of Truss on 113.

The final result will be announced on September 5. However, it is quite clear that Britain will either get its first PM of colour or its third woman leader.

After winning the latest voting, Sunak said: “We need to restore trust, rebuild the economy, and reunite our country.”
His comments were made in the reference to Britain’s ongoing struggle with the worst cost-of-living crisis in decades, which has gotten worse due to the coronavirus pandemic, the war in Ukraine and Brexit.

On the other hand, Truss said she was “not complacent at all”. She said: “What I believe is that lowering taxes, opening up opportunities, is going to help us deliver the economic growth that Britain needs. And it’s also going to help deliver us the next election.”

While selecting the final name, the party members will also consider how both candidates would approach some of the key issues as Sunak wants to tackle surging inflation and Britain’s pandemic debts. On the other hand, Truss wants immediate tax cuts. Overall, the economy will be a key battleground in the coming weeks.

Considering the current heatwave issues in the UK, their approach to climate change will also be very crucial. Sunak has vowed to stick with Britain’s legally binding targets to reduce carbon emissions to net zero by 2050.

He previously said that he would maintain “green levies” on energy bills earmarked to help the renewable sector grow. Truss has vowed to scrap the levies, but says she is committed to the 2050 target.

Besides taxation and climate change, other important factors to consider and analyse Truss and Sunak’s approach are defence, cost of living, immigration and Brexit.
It’s Truss vs Sunak for the battle to be Britain’s next Prime Minister

Conservative party members will choose between former chancellor of the exchequer Rishi Sunak and foreign secretary Liz Truss in the contest to succeed Boris Johnson after MPs eliminated the third candidate Penny Mordaunt.

“Hasta la vista, baby!” That’s how Boris Johnson concluded his final major speech in parliament as UK prime minister on Wednesday (July 20), to a standing ovation from his lately mutinous MPs. However, several analysts interpreted his parting remarks referencing Arnold Schwarzenegger’s famous line from ‘Terminator’ movies as a hint that he would return. “I’ll be back,” is another line of the Terminator character which Johnson repeated. Johnson left his final session of prime minister’s questions, defended his three turbulent years in office — from Brexit and Covid vaccinations to Ukraine — and hailed the contenders vying to follow him, all the while fending off opposition charges, AFP reported.

As per Johnson’s press secretary, the prime minister isn’t considering his comeback. She further added that it was his way of saying goodbye.

Johnson’s Downing Street team is currently waging an “anyone but Rishi” campaign, accusing the former finance minister Rishi Sunak of planning the cabinet coup that led to Johnson’s ouster after a slew of scandals. Those include the ‘Partygate,’ which refers to events held by Johnson at his residence in violation of Covid guidelines when rest of UK was under lockdown imposed by his own government. The prime minister, while laughing, responded that he’s not following the Tory election that closely.
