The Full Context | What are the challenges that the new Prime Minister will be facing?

The Full Context | Explained: The policies of Truss, Sunak

The tory leadership race for the next UK PM has narrowed down. Out of the initial 11 contenders, Rishi Sunak and Liz Truss have qualified for the runoff.

UK Leadership race down to final two | Penny Mordaunt eliminated in fifth ballot

The race to 10 Downing street is getting narrower. From what started from 11 candidates has come down to the remaining three. Rishi Sunak widened his lead in the latest round of voting by Conservative MPs to decide Britain's next prime minister.

Conservative party gets a step closer to electing its new leader, Rishi Sunak maintains lead

The world is now focused on Rishi Sunak, a 42-year-old man of Indian descent who is currently a leading candidate for the position of UK prime minister. His ancestry, political ascent, and fortune have piqued interest among Indians as well as British people.Rishi Sunak has gained further attention as a result of claims that Boris Johnson's downfall was caused by his departure as British Chancellor of the Exchequer.

After his Conservative Party colleagues strongly supported him with 137 votes in the final round on Wednesday, he is now the closest anybody of Indian heritage has ever come to taking office as British Prime Minister. The former Chancellor is not guaranteed a similarly smooth ride because he must compete with a considerably more difficult electorate of the Tory membership base that has recently shown favouritism for his competitor, Liz Truss, in polls.

There is still time for the MPs' favourite to attempt to duplicate that outcome at the conclusion of postal voting on September 5, though, as another head-to-head televised debate between the final two candidates is set on the BBC for Monday and a series of hustings will be held around the UK.

In less than 50 days United Kingdom will have its next new PM. Out of five contenders who took part in televised debates, we now have top four hopefuls who are in the race to be the next PM of UK.

Race for new UK PM: Former chancellor Rishi Sunak tops Round 3 of voting

As another candidate was eliminated to leave three contenders in the race to become the United Kingdom's new prime minister, former finance minister Rishi Sunak again topped the latest vote.

With longshot candidate Kemi Badenoch trailing on 59 and therefore eliminated from the contest, Sunak garnered 118 votes.

In the second place was former defence minister Penny Mordaunt on 92 followed by Foreign Secretary Liz Truss on 86.

The UK will either get its third female leader or its first British Asian prime minister as a result of the vote.

Sunak, who is all but guaranteed to make the final cut in Wednesday's last round of voting by MPs, fell two votes short of the number needed to guarantee a place among the final two.

With Truss making up five votes on Mordaunt, the race to join him further tightened amid a YouGov poll showing the vote showed that Badenoch would beat the remaining candidates with the all-important members.

Before the governing party's 200,000 members choose their new leader lawmakers will eliminate one more candidate from the race to replace Boris Johnson who fell from grace following a flurry of scandals.

After a damaging few days, Mordaunt trails Truss following criticism regarding her work ethic by her former boss David Frost.

UK leadership race: Rishi Sunak tops vote; another candidate eliminated

Despite concerns that London is over-deregulatory, the new UK Finance Minister Nadhim Zahawi on Tuesday (July 19), will lay out his strategies to reduce inflation and ‘seize the opportunities of Brexit.’ In the midst of a turbulent political climate in Britain, Zahawi, who took over as Chancellor of the Exchequer after resignation of Rishi Sunak earlier this month, will outline his vision in his first speech in the position at London’s Mansion House. Zahawi when addressing the business representatives in London will attempt to pull all of that aside by vowing to ‘manage inflation’, enhance the private sector economy, and will offer a post-Brexit vision for financial services, AFP reported.

The ministry in a statement stated that the minister will commit to, “repeal hundreds of pieces of retained EU law and replacing them with a coherent and agile approach to financial regulation that is right for us."

UK Finance Minister Nadhim Zahawi to outline his plans to control inflation

In a poll of Tory voters conducted by the Conservative Home website, Kemi Badenoch came out on the top, with former chancellor to the exchequer Rishi Sunak placed fourth.

Who is Kemi Badenoch, the 'wild card' shaking UK PM race?

Britain’s former finance minister Rishi Sunak held onto his lead as the race to replace Boris Johnson as Prime Minister narrowed down to four.

Race to replace UK PM Boris Johnson narrows to four

The United Kingdom is all set to get a new Prime Minister and the contenders for the post went head-to-head for the second time in a televised debate which was held on Sunday.

Race for new UK PM: Candidates go head-to-head in 2nd televised debate

Britain’s former chancellor Rishi Sunak is leading the race to be the next prime minister of the United Kingdom. The Indian-origin leader has cemented his lead over four other rivals and has gained a sufficient lead in the first two rounds of voting.

Apart from former chancellor Rishi Sunak, the other hopefuls are Trade Minister Penny Mordaunt, UK foreign secretary Liz Truss, Chairman of foreign affairs committee Tom Tugendhat and former equalities minister Kemi Badenoch.

In the first round, Sunak secured 88 votes followed by Trade minister Penny Mordaunt at 67. Meanwhile, in the second round, Sunak maintained the lead with 101 votes followed by Mordaunt at 83 votes.

Sunak who is the son-in-law of Infosys co-founder Narayana Murthy is widely expected to make it to the final two candidates to be put to the party membership.

However despite the numbers on Sunak’s side, a snap YouGov poll of the Tory party has found that Trade minister Penny Mordaunt has a higher chance of winning the race than Sunak. Polls further suggest how Mordaunt is the bookie's favourite to be the next prime minister of the United Kingdom. Betting odds claim that Mordaunt has a 50 per cent chance of winning the election compared to Sunak at 34.7 per cent.

Until the past few months, Sunak was seen as the frontrunner to succeed Johnson but his popularity has taken a hit after he introduced several policies like national insurance rise which went down with the Tory MPs. Apart from this, the revelation that his wife the multimillionaire Akshata Murthy held non-domicile status which helped her evade paying UK tax was also brought to the table. However, this particular issue was raised by Sunak in the second round of televised debate where he asserted how he was proud of Murthy’s family and all that they have achieved.

So far there have been two rounds of voting and two televised debates out of which Sunak and Truss have emerged as front runners with Penny Mordaunt placed at third. The last televised debate saw some of the fiercest clashes between Sunak and Truss whose divisions on the economy and ways and means to combat inflation were laid bare.

Meanwhile, there have also been reports that have emerged on how Boris Johnson has privately told Tories to back anyone but Rishi Sunak for the country’s top post.

Despite mud-slinging and backbiting, the United Kingdom will have its new prime minister on September 5.

Meanwhile, there have also been reports that have emerged on how Boris Johnson has privately told Tories to back anyone but Rishi Sunak for the country’s top post. Despite mud-slinging and backbiting, the United Kingdom will have its new prime minister on September 5. Watch WION's live TV here: ×

Rise of Rishi Sunak: Will he be the next prime minister of the United Kingdom?

In a televised discussion on July 18, former UK finance minister and potential candidate for prime minister Rishi Sunak addressed the controversies surrounding his family's wealth. His wife Akshata Murthy is the daughter of Infosys founder Narayana Murthy and author and educator Sudha Murthy. The tax arrangements of the former UK chancellor's family have long been a source of scrutiny. In the debate that ITV aired on Sunday, Sunak expressed his pride in the journey his parents-in-law had taken.

"My father-in-law came from absolutely nothing and just had a dream and a couple of hundred pounds that my mother-in-law’s savings provided him," Sunak said. "And from that, he went to build one of the world’s largest, most-respected companies, that, by the way, employs thousands of people here in the United Kingdom."

He added: "It is a story I am really proud of, and as prime minister, I want to ensure that we can create more stories like that at home."

The 42-year-old former Chancellor, who was born in the UK, was grilled during a contentious television debate about his wife's tax affairs, which made headlines earlier this year when she voluntarily gave up her legal non-domicile status in order to pay taxes on her Indian income from shares of Infosys, which were also owned by the UK.

Regarding his own US Green Card, which he purportedly renounced after a few months in the Chancellor's position at No. 11 Downing Street, Sunak was also questioned.

The argument was the most recent face-off between the five surviving contenders for the position of new British Prime Minister and leader of the Conservative Party, succeeding Boris Johnson.

Before the third round of voting by Tory MPs on Monday to further limit the field and get to the final two candidates, an instant opinion poll by Opinium indicated that Sunak was the undisputed winner of the discussion on Sunday.

At least one of the candidates with the fewest votes would be eliminated, and another round is anticipated on Tuesday. The former chancellor had the highest rating from the 1,001 participants in the Opinium survey—about 24%—followed by Tom Tugendhat, chair of the Commons Foreign Affairs Committee, with 19%. Penny Mordaunt, the minister of trade, came in third with 17%, followed by Liz Truss, the secretary of state, with 15%. The viewer poll placed former equalities minister Kemi Badenoch in last place with 12% of the votes.

However, a Conservative Home website poll of the party's grassroots members that was released on Sunday night indicates that Badenoch may be gaining in favour as she has emerged as their top choice, followed by Mordaunt.According to that poll, if Badenoch and Mordaunt made it to the final two, Badenoch would win in a head-to-head matchup 59 to 31 percent of the time. Mordaunt would likewise come up short against Sunak and Truss.

UK PM candidates go head-to-head in 1st televised debate

With the race for the UK’s prime ministership gaining heat, interim prime minister Boris Johnson has urged the defeated Tory member candidates to “back anyone but Rishi Sunak”, according to local media reports.

According to The Times newspaper, Johnson, who resigned as the leader of the ruling Conservative Party on July 7 after many of his cabinet ministers quit, has asked the failed candidates to make sure that Sunak does not become the prime minister.

Moreover, Johnson reportedly told the contenders that he would neither endorse anyone nor intervene in the contest.

According to the newspaper, this secret meeting is part of the “anyone but Rishi” hidden campaign that is being run by Johnson and his supporters.

The newspaper further reported that Johnson feels betrayed by Sunak, whose resignation triggered his exit even as he lost the support of his own party members.

However, Johnson felt that Liz Truss, the foreign secretary, who has been endorsed by his fiercest cabinet allies, Jacob Rees-Mogg and Nadine Dorries are able candidates to take the mantle of leadership of Conservative party, a source who had direct access to one of the conversations told the newspaper.

Johnson also reportedly indicated that he is open to Penny Mordaunt, the junior trade minister, succeeding him if it meant that Sunak is kept out of the race.

"The whole No.10 [Downing Street] team hates Rishi. It's personal. It's vitriolic. They don't blame Saj [Sajid Javid] for bringing him down. They blame Rishi. They think he was planning this for months," the newspaper quoted a source as saying.

In the United Kingdom, the five remaining Conservative candidates to become the prime minister of the country faced off in the first TV debate of the contest. They discussed trust, tax policy, the NHS, transexual rights, building a green economy, and energy bills. Tom Tugendhat, who gained the least votes in the second round of the leadership contest, was the winner of the debate as per a snap poll of 1,000 people. Former finance minister Rishi Sunak, who is one of the frontrunners, clashed over tax policy with British foreign minister Liz Truss. But when they did erupt, it came largely over taxation, with former finance minister Rishi Sunak, forced to defend plans to keep rates at some of the highest levels in decades. Former equalities minister Kemi Badenoch and Tom Tugendhat, chair of parliament's Foreign Affairs Committee, also remain in the running. Junior trade minister Penny Mordaunt is also a popular candidate. Mordaunt told television viewers: "I'm very aware that while my party chooses a new leader, you are watching us pick your next prime minister... I hope you like at least one of us." The economic policy remained the topic of discussion between Sunak and Truss as they tussled over in the debate, hosted by broadcaster Channel 4. Truss has proposed scrapping increases in payroll tax and corporation tax proposed by Sunak, at a cost of over $36 billion a year, to be funded by a slower reduction in government debt built up during the COVID-19 pandemic. Sunak told Truss: "We have to be honest, borrowing your way out of inflation isn't a plan, it's a fairy tale." WATCH WION LIVE HERE You can now write for wionews.com and be a part of the community. UK Politics: Remaining Tory leadership candidates clash over tax policy and economic plan

After viewers pointed out that there was a spelling error on Rishi Sunak's campaign banner during his participation in his first television debate to run for the position of UK PM, Rishi Sunak received backlash on Twitter. The word "campaign" was spelt incorrectly as "campiaign." In a play on his catchphrase "Ready for Rishi," Rishi Sunak answered by stating, "Ready for spellcheck." He accepted the Twitter teasing in stride.

Twitteratis roast Rishi Sunak for misspelt 'campaign' on banner in television debate

Boris Johnson has resigned as the leader of the Conservative party and prime minister of the United Kingdom after almost three years in office. The political upheaval in Britain reached its tipping point after almost 50 ministers resigned from the Conservative Party, protesting over a series of alleged scandals — the latest being the allegations of sexual misconduct against a senior lawmaker in Johnson’s government. This ultimately dwindled the party’s faith in Johnson’s ability to lead. He is to stay on until his party chooses the next PM.

How long does Boris Johnson stay?

The Conservative Party’s new leader who will succeed Boris Johnson as the new British PM will be announced on September 5. As the party has a majority in the UK Parliament, the winner of the party leadership vote would automatically become the PM.

Who gets to vote?

First of all, this is not a general election. This is an internal voting that would take place within the Conservative party that holds a majority in the UK Parliament.

The party would choose its leader through a two-stage selection process.

First would be a series of secret ballots where 358 Tory (colloquial term for conservative party members) MPs would vote in the first round.

As of now, former Chancellor Rishi Sunak has won the second round with 101 votes, followed by Penny Mordaunt, with 83 votes, and Foreign Secretary Liz Truss with 64 votes.

He also won the first round of voting with 88 votes, followed by trade minister Penny Mordaunt with 67 votes and foreign secretary Liz Truss with 50 votes.

Chancellor Nadhim Zahawi, former health secretary Jeremy Hunt and Suella Braverman, the attorney general have been eliminated from the race.

Further ballots will take place in the following week, with the bottom-ranked candidate getting eliminated in each round.

The final round of voting happens with two candidates in a face-off. Around 1,60,000 Tory members would select their leader through postal ballot (voting through post or any electronic mode) as the next party leader and PM.
The result will be announced on 5 September.

What exactly are hustings?

To put it in simple terms, the final two candidates will campaign for the second round of voting through the summer months. ‘Hustings’ is another term for these campaign events.

The ballot papers would be sent through post to Tory MPs in August.

Take a look at the candidates

Initially, eight MPs from the Conservative Party qualified for the first-round ballot. Each candidate got the backing of at least 20 party members.

In the order of highest to lowest votes received in the first-round ballot. Top row from left: Rishi Sunak, Penny Mordaunt. Liz Truss, Bottom row from left: Kemi Badenoch, Tom Tugendhat, Suella Braverman (AFP)

What is the Queen’s role?

As per age-old traditions, the outgoing PM appears before the House of Commons for the last time and then outside 10 Downing Street, before visiting Buckingham palace.

The outgoing PM places the resignation letter before the queen, after which a statement is released by the palace saying that the queen is “pleased to accept” the prime minister’s resignation.

After this, the departing PM’s car exits the palace and the one carrying the new PM will visit the queen. The new leader will seek permission from the Queen to form a new government. Once the queen accepts, the UK will have a new PM.

Take a look at the candidates Initially, eight MPs from the Conservative Party qualified for the first-round ballot. Each candidate got the backing of at least 20 party members. In the order of highest to lowest votes received in the first-round ballot. Top row from left: Rishi Sunak, Penny Mordaunt. Liz Truss, Bottom row from left: Kemi Badenoch, Tom Tugendhat, Suella Braverman (AFP) What is the Queen’s role? As per age-old traditions, the outgoing PM appears before the House of Commons for the last time and then outside 10 Downing Street, before visiting Buckingham palace. The outgoing PM places the resignation letter before the queen, after which a statement is released by the palace saying that the queen is “pleased to accept” the prime minister’s resignation. After this, the departing PM’s car exits the palace and the one carrying the new PM will visit the queen. The new leader will seek permission from the Queen to form a new government. Once the queen accepts, the UK will have a new PM. Watch WION LIVE HERE: You can now write for wionews.com and be a part of the community. Share your stories and opinions with us here.

Breaking it down: How does the UK elect its new prime minister?

Prominent Indian businessman Anand Mahindra is know for his witty tweets and regular presence on the social media platform. He is again in news for one of his latest tweet that pokes fun over race to become next UK PM. On Tuesday (July 12) Mahindra posted an edited image of 10 Downing Street, the official residence of British prime minister.

The thing that strikes most is the Indian religious adornment on the front door and windows. The door proudly flaunts a 'toran', an auspicious garland made from Mango leaves. There are 'Swastikas' on the door as well.

In European context, though Swastikas represent Adolf Hitler's Nazi regime, the symbol is one of the holiest in Hindu religion completely separate from any connotations of atrocities caused in Nazi Germany.

"The future of 10 Downing Street? The famed British humour is now laced with Desi humour…" reads the tweet

Top 10 world news: Rishi Sunak topped UK PM race, Gotabaya resigned, and more

Jeremy Hunt, UK’s former health secretary who lost the first round of voting, has said that he is backing former chancellor Rishi Sunak in the race to be Conservative leader and prime minister.

In the last leadership election in 2019, Hunt came second to Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

In an interview to BBC, Hunt spoke about his defeat saying, “Politics is about momentum, I'm afraid I didn't have it this time.”

When he was asked who he is backing, Hunt named Sunak, saying that he is "one of the most decent people" he had met in British politics.

When further queried, he said that the Indian-born former chancellor was someone of "formidable ability who has been thinking about the right thing to do for our economy, for families up and down the country, very hard over the last two years".

The former minister remained hopeful of the current race saying that it produced an "excellent list of candidates" which proved that the Conservative Party was "modern and outward-looking".

"In a period when we need to rebuild trust with the electorate that shows we are in tune with modern Britain," he said.

Sunak won the first round of voting by MPs to choose the next Conservative leader and prime minister. He got 88 votes.

Trade minister Penny Mordaunt came second ( 67) and Foreign Secretary Liz Truss was palced third (50).

Other rounds of voting are expected to take in the next few days with the remaining candidates Kemi Badenoch, Tom Tugendhat and Suella Braverman.

The final two will then be elected through a ballot of Conservative Party members. The result is expected on September 5.

The race for next leadership comes after Johnson announced his resignation last week, months after receiving criticism over lockdown parties in Downing Street and other issues.

What started with 'partygate' appeared to end at sacking of Tory deputy chief whip Chris Pincher who was accused of drunkenly groping men. Johnson had survived a no-confidence vote from his own party over alcohol-fuelled bashes held at his official residence just when Britain was under strict COVID lockdown.
