<p>The world of tennis was in a state of&nbsp;shock on Thursday evening (September 15) with Swiss maestro Roger Federer announcing his retirement from the game after this year's Laver Cup, scheduled later this month. Federer, a former world number one and a winner of 20 Grand Slams, is one of the iconic players of all time and his retirement leaves&nbsp;a huge void in the tennis&nbsp;arena.</p>

<p>"As many of you know, the past three years have presented me with challenges in the form of injuries and surgeries. I've worked hard to return to full competitive form. But I also know my body's capacities and limits, and its message to me lately has been clear. I am 41 years old. I have played more than 1,500 matches over 24 years. Tennis has treated me more generously than I ever would have dreamt, and now I must recognise when it is time to end my competitive career,"&nbsp;Federer had tweeted.</p>

'You inspired countless millions' - Serena Williams welcomes Roger Federer to retirement club

<p>Roger Federer, on Thursday (September 15), announced that he will be stepping aside from tennis after the end of this month's Laver Cup. Federer hasn't played a competitive match following his quarter-final exit at Wimbledon 2021. Hence, many predicted his retirement was on the cards but his announcement still shocked many and send&nbsp;plethora of his fans into a meltdown.</p>

<p>Not only the tennis fraternity, but superstar athletes from all other fields are sharing their reactions post Federer's big revelation. In this regard, Argentina captain and Paris Saint Germain (PSG) striker Lionel Messi also heaped praise on the Swiss maestro.</p>

<p>"A genius, unique in the history of tennis and an example for any athlete. The best in your new stage, we will miss seeing you on the court making us enjoy, Roger Federer," Messi wrote in an Instagram post.</p>

<p>England midfielder Jill Scott announced her retirement from soccer on Tuesday, the second member of the Euro 2022-winning team to do so in two days. The 35-year-old Scott's decision comes after Ellen White, the team's record scorer, said Monday she was retiring. Both Scott and White played in the final of the Women's European Championship on July 31, when England beat Germany 2-1 after extra time.</p>

<p>Four times world champion Sebastian Vettel announced his retirement from Formula One at the end of the season, saying on Thursday his goals had changed and he wanted to focus more on family and interests outside the sport.</p>

<p>The 35-year-old German, who drives for the Aston Martin team, won his titles with Red Bull from 2010-13 and also spent six seasons with Ferrari. He made the announcement ahead of this weekend`s Hungarian Grand Prix, the 13th round of the season and last race before the August break.</p>

<p>"I hereby announce my retirement from Formula One by the end of the 2022 season," he said in a video statement explaining his reasons on a newly-created Instagram page. "I love this sport. It has been central to my life since I can remember. But as much as there is life on track, there`s my life off track too. Being a racing driver has never been my sole identity.</p>

It was a very emotional moment for me, and my aunt, who has always been by my side since childhood, helped a great deal. But I did feel that it was the right time for me to retire.
