India’s bowling coach Paras Mhambrey has backed Ravichandran Ashwin as one of the greatest match-winners in the history of Indian cricket after he produced another match-winning performance on Day 3 of the Dominica Test on Friday, July 14 evening. Ashwin, produced a magical spell on Friday as India beat hosts West Indies by an innings and 141 runs to take a 1-0 lead in the series. The Tamil Nadu veteran spinner bagged 12 wickets in the match including seven in the second innings of West Indies.

Ashwin's biggest match-winner?

“As a team, we realise how valuable R Ashwin is. In my opinion, he is one of the greatest match-winners for India. There have been very few match-winners like him. The number of matches he has helped us win what can I say,” Mhambrey said in the post-match after India beat the hosts.

India were at their fluent best contest as they asserted their dominance in the first World Test Championship (WTC) match. Ashwin’s brilliance turned out to be the difference-maker having bagged 60/5 in the first innings and followed that with 71/7 in the second innings. He now has 486 wickets in the red-ball format and is closing in on the 500-wicket mark.

“When we came here on Day 1, it was a bit dry, and when we checked the stats of the local games we found out that spinners dominated in those games. We felt as the game progresses it will be difficult for batting and the other thing is how we use the wicket,” Mhambrey added.

India continued from 312/2 at the start of Day 3 and added another 109 runs before deciding to declare the innings. Yashasvi Jaiswal scored 171 runs in his debut innings before he was scalped by Alzarri Joseph while Virat Kohli missed out on a hundred and was dismissed on 76. India would then turn the screw in the second innings of West Indies and win the contest by an innings. Despite being at his best, it was Jaiswal who was adjourned Player of the Match in the contest.

The second Test between India and West Indies will take start on Thursday, July 20 in Trinidad.

Yashasvi Jaiswal is cut for great things in life. The young left-handed batter made a stunning debut against West Indies in the first Test in Dominica, hitting 171 in the first innings - the third-highest individual total scored by an Indian debutant in Tests. Captain Rohit Sharma, who, 10 years back, scored a brilliant 177 against the same side on his Test debut in Kolkata, lauded Jaiswal, adding he was most impressed with his temperament and ability to stick with the plans and deliver. Jaiswal opened alongside Rohit, and the pair stitched a 229-run stand for the first wicket. While he remained unbeaten on 143 after playing 350 balls – batting throughout day two, Jaiswal could add just 28 runs more before getting out to Alzarri Joseph for a well-made 171 early on day three. He played 387 balls and lasted 501 minutes at the crease – the longest by an Indian on Test debut. He also earned the Player of the Match award for his outstanding outing. ALSO READ: Ravichandran Ashwin's 12-wicket haul hands India record win over West Indies in first Test, Jaiswal named POTM The game, however, ended inside day three, thanks to Ravichandran Ashwin’s 12-wicket haul that saw India beat West Indies by an innings and 141 runs. Speaking to the media after the Test, Rohit talked highly of Jaiswal, saying he and the team management knew about his credentials and that the young batter has shown what he can achieve on the bigger stage. "He's got the talent," Rohit said of Jaiswal. "We knew about it. He's shown us in the past couple of years that he's ready for this big stage. Came and batted sensibly, showed a lot of patience, and the temperament was tested as well - at no stage [did it look] like he was panicking or going away from his plans, which was good to see." Results speak for themselves – Rohit on star spin duo Ravi Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja shared 17 wickets among them in the first Test, and Rohit didn’t have anything else to say about them than just showering praises. "The results speak for themselves," Rohit said of the two spinners. "Both of these guys have been doing it for a while for us now. They know exactly what is expected out of them. There's not much to tell them [about] what we need to do. It's just about going to them and giving them that freedom to go and express because that is when they're doing their best for the side as well.” The second Test will begin on July 20th at the Queen’s Park Oval in Trinidad. WI vs IND 2023: 'He showed patience, temperament, stuck to his plans': Rohit lauds debutant Yashasvi Jaiswal

Ravichandran Ashwin's seven-wicket second innings demolition job underlined his utter dominance of an inept West Indies team who crashed to defeat by an innings and 141 runs late on the third day of the first Test against India in Dominica on Friday. It was India's largest margin of victory in a Test match in the West Indies. India maintains an unbeaten run spanning more than 21 years against the Carrebean opponents going into the second and final Test starting next Thursday in Trinidad.

After Rohit Sharma declared the tourists' first innings at 421 for five, 40 minutes into the afternoon session, first day destroyers Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja wasted little time in adding to that first innings success to skittle the Caribbean team for 130 in just over 50 overs.

Ashwin fittingly ended the match by trapping last man Jomel Warrican leg-before.

His second innings' haul of 7-71 lifted his match figures to 12 -131 -– his eighth match haul of 10 wickets or more in Tests -- while the support of Jadeja kept relentless pressure on a home side technically and temperamentally incapable of coping with such quality spin bowling on a helpful pitch.

Debutant Alick Athanaze was again the top scorer with 28 but his effort paled in comparison to his Indian counterpart as opening batsman Yashasvi Jaiswal led the way in India's only innings with a determined, dedicated innings of 171 which spanned more than eight hours and consumed 387 deliveries.

That effort earned him the player of the match award notwithstanding the fantastic bowling figures of Ashwin.

"This experience has been a special moment," said the 21-year-old left-hander. "I used to think about playing for my country when I was young. It is an emotional moment for me but this just the start."

- 'Let ourselves down' -

For West Indies captain Kraigg Brathwaite, the emotions were the exact opposite on a forgettable day personally and for his team.

"I didn't think it spun a lot early on, we just let ourselves down with the bat," said the opener, a comment which immediately raised a few eyebrows given how the pitch behaved virtually from the first session. "Senior guys, starting with myself, have to lead the way. We have to use the bat more instead of our pads."

As on day one, Brathwaite and opening partner Tagenarine Chanderpaul had to cope with spin just minutes into the start of the second innings and although he was dropped on nought, Ashwin eventually put him out of his misery. He had missed a straightforward chance at short extra-cover in the morning offered by Virat Kohli off left-arm spinner Warrican.

Dropped at 40, Kohli went on to score 76 before falling to Rahkeem Cornwall just after lunch. The burly off-spinner was only allowed to bowl after the morning period because of time spent off the field on the first day when he was unwell.

Earlier, West Indies finally prised out Jaiswal and added the wicket of Ajinkya Rahane pre-lunch.

Jaiswal was finally undone by the extra pace and bounce extracted by fast bowler Alzarri Joseph in edging a catch to wicketkeeper Joshua da Silva after an hour's play.

IND vs WI 1st Test: Ravichandran Ashwin heaps praise on THIS young star, says 'he is very vibrant'

Ravichandran Ashwin could be destined for greatness according to former India player Deep Dasgupta after the spinner added another feather to his impressive cap in the first Test against West Indies. Ashwin, after scalping five wickets on Day 1 became the player with the most fifers among active players, leapfrogging James Anderson with 33. Dasgupta has now tipped him for further greatness and thinks he could be the difference-maker between the two sides.

Ashwin destined for greatness

"The difference in the class of Ravichandran Ashwin the bowler, and the [West Indies] batters was evident. He would have been disappointed not to be a part of the final, but leaving the disappointment behind, he came and was a thorough professional and did what he does," Deep Dasgupta said while in conversation with ESPNCricinfo.

The ex-player also praised Ashwin for the varieties he offers with the cherry in his hand. Ashwin has been a spin revolution in Indian cricket after the departure of Anil Kumble and Harbhajan Singh.

"He [Ashwin] has so many varieties in his armoury, and he also knows when to use it. It's one thing to have these variations and it's another thing that you know when to use it."

"He is undoubtedly among the modern-day greats and once he finishes his career, he will finish as one of the greatest ever."

IND vs WI 1st Test: Former India player backs Ravi Ashwin for greatness, says 'he is undoubtedly...'

Even after England won the third Ashes Test, the debate around wicketkeeper Jonny Bairstow’s controversial dismissal in the second match refuses to die down. The English cricketer was dismissed by Alex Carey as he wandered out of his crease even before the ball was dead. The wicket of Bairstow sparked a controversy, igniting a debate on the spirit of the game and the rules of cricket. Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has now shared an anecdote about Bairstow’s contentious manner of dismissal. The number one Test bowler revealed that India cricket team head coach Rahul Dravid had an hour-long discussion with a bartender and a waiter on the English wicketkeeper’s controversial dismissal.

What did Rahul Dravid say?

"The other day, all of us were sitting on a beach, and Rahul bhai bought me a lemon juice. He had a one-hour discussion with the waiter and bartender on whether Jonny Bairstow was out or not. They spoke about everything, from the rules to the spirit of cricket in their discussion," Ashwin said on his YouTube channel.

Ravichandran Ashwin further revealed that an old man, who was present at the bar, also expressed his point of view and suggested that the officials made the right decision by ruling Jonny Bairstow out. "They are all so passionate. Then suddenly an old man came and declared, 'He Bairstow maan, he out maan!'," Ashwin added.

Ashwin’s brilliance against West Indies

Ravichandran Ashwin kicked off the first Test on a sublime note having begged a five-wicket haul, giving away 60 runs, against West Indies on Wednesday. The West Indies team was dismissed for 150 on the opening day of the first Test. Ashwin completed a brilliant spell against West Indies and this was the 33rd time when he managed to take five wickets in a Test innings. With this, the Indian spinner broke the record of England fast bowler James Anderson, who has a five-wicket haul to his name in 32 Test innings. Ashwin is now also the most active player to take five wickets in an innings.

× Also read: Aakash Chopra on Team India’s decision to drop Ashwin from WTC final Ravichandran Ashwin further revealed that an old man, who was present at the bar, also expressed his point of view and suggested that the officials made the right decision by ruling Jonny Bairstow out. "They are all so passionate. Then suddenly an old man came and declared, 'He Bairstow maan, he out maan!'," Ashwin added. Ashwin’s brilliance against West Indies Ravichandran Ashwin kicked off the first Test on a sublime note having begged a five-wicket haul, giving away 60 runs, against West Indies on Wednesday. IND vs WI 1st Test: Ravichandran Ashwin joins ELITE club after dismissing Chanderpaul | Know More

Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin is known for his no-holds-barred comments on a range of cricketing issues. Ashwin has now yet again come into the spotlight for his comments on the teams playing in Ashes 2023. Be it his sarcastic takes on the matches or his tweets, everything seems to be trending. This time, Ashwin’s sarcastic take on Jonny Bairstow’s contentious dismissal is in the news. Replying to one of his comments, an Indian journalist said that he didn’t agree with what the spinner said. In response, Ashwin’s reply has ignited a new debate.

Ravichandran Ashwin vs journalist

Ravichandran Ashwin had already given his take on Jonny Bairstow’s controversial dismissal. The 36-year-tweeted that a keeper would never have a dip at the stumps from that far out in a Test match unless he or his team has noticed a pattern of the batter leaving his crease after leaving a ball as Bairstow did. Ashwin also added that we must applaud the game smarts of the individual rather than skewing it toward unfair play or the spirit of the game.

It seems Ravichandran Ashwin’s comments didn’t go down well with journalist Rajdeep Sardesai, who took to Twitter and wrote, “Sorry to bang on about this but I do love the game. But to my friend Ashwin and all those who believe that Johnny Bairstow was fairly out, I have a simple question that would you be happy if you were given out in that way? That’s the real test. Do unto others what you would do to yourself!”

Ravichandran Ashwin clashes with journalist over Jonny Bairstow’s dismissal

ICC ODI World Cup 2023’s full schedule has not even been officially announced but already much has been said and written about the tournament. India will be hosting the mega event in October. Recently, the Pakistan Cricket Board requested the International Cricket Council and the Board of Control for Cricket India to change the venue of their games. Earlier, former PCB chairman Ramiz Raza had also expressed his wish for Pakistan not to travel to India for the ODI World Cup 2023. This statement was made after the BCCI made it clear that the Indian team will not travel to the neighbouring country for the next edition of the Asia Cup. While speaking on his YouTube channel, Ravichandran Ashwin expressed his views on PCB’s venue-changing request.

Ravichandran Ashwin: ICC unlikely to pay heed to the request

Ravichandran Ashwin broke his silence on the PCB’s request to change the venue and said that the International Cricket Council would not agree to Pakistan’s request. The veteran Indian spinner said that given the nature of the reason, ICC is unlikely to pay heed to the request. He also added that only if Pakistan cited security reasons, then maybe they had a chance of getting the venue swapped.

For the unversed, something similar had happened during the 2016 T20 World. The India vs Pakistan encounter was shifted from Dharamshala to Kolkata. Ashwin further said that PCB has mentioned in their request letter that conditions will favour Afghanistan in Chennai. Hence, now the changing of venue also indicates that it plays into an advantage for Pakistan.

"Pakistan, in their request letter itself, have mentioned that conditions will favor Afghanistan in Chennai. So, by changing venues, it plays into an advantage for Pakistan. So, I highly doubt that ICC will heed to this request. Maybe if Pakistan have given some valid security reasons, then it might be shifted,” Ashwin said.

ICC ODI World Cup 2023: Pakistan’s schedule

The official schedule for the World Cup mega event is not out yet. The International Cricket Council is expected to make the official announcement on June 27. This means that the fixture schedule will be out exactly 100 days before the start of the tournament.

If reports are to be believed then, Pakistan will kickstart their campaign against Australia. The match may be played at Bengaluru's Chinnaswamy Stadium on October 20, followed by Pakistan vs Afghanistan at Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, three days later. PCB has requested a venue swap for these two matches.

The World Test Championship (WTC) Final got underway between India and England at the Oval in London on Wednesday and India, not to much surprise, decided to go with Ravindra Jadeja as the only spinner in the squad.

Skipper Rohit Sharma, who decided to field first after winning the toss, was asked by Nasser Hussain how difficult it was to drop Ravi Ashwin from the squad. Notably, Ashwin is currently the number one bowler in the ICC Test ranking, with 869 points to his name.

“It's always tough. He's been a match-winner for us, over the course of many years. So, leaving him out was tough. But you got to do the things that are needed for the team. So, eventually we came up with that decision,” Rohit replied to Hussain's question.

“The conditions and also the weather being overcast. The pitch won't change too much. Four seamers and one spinner. The spinner is Jadeja,” he further added.

Sharma had told the reporters on the eve of the Test that he, along with the team management, is going to wait till the toss and pick their best XI depending on the conditions prevalent at the time.

"Yeah, see, I've not said that Ashwin is not going to play. We'll wait until tomorrow - because one thing I have seen here - the pitch actually changes quite a bit from day to day. Today it's looking the way it is. Tomorrow it might be slightly different, who knows. So the message to the boys has been very clear, all 15 must be ready to play at any point in time. And we'll see the conditions tomorrow as well and make that decision as to who gets into that playing 11," Rohit said on Tuesday.

"I'll go and have a look at the pitch. But yeah, it looks a bit of help for the seamers definitely. With the overhead conditions as well, it's going to assist seamers a fair bit," the skipper added.

India's Playing XI included four seamers in Umesh Yadav, Mohammed Shami, Mohammed Siraj and Shardul Thakur alongside Ravindra Jadeja as the only spinner.

WTC Final: 'For the team...:' India skipper Rohit Sharma on why Ravi Ashwin was dropped from XI

Former England spinner Monty Panesar feels India must play Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja against Australia in the World Test Championship (WTC) Final. Labelling the surface at the Oval as spinner-friendly, in comparison to other venues in the UK, Monty said going ahead with both will benefit India.

Since the Australian team has had their trouble against the turning ball, especially against spinners from India, Monty feels this move could help India sit in the driver's seat throughout the Test. Speaking to the PTI ahead of the one-off game, which begins on June 7th in London, Monty said, "It is one pitch in England you tend to play two spinners. If the ball turns, there is bounce as well for the spinners. In my view, the wicket will be flat. In these conditions, it will suit India if they play two spinners. We have already seen Australia struggling against spinners, especially from India." "The weather has been hot, and we are seeing the ball turning even in some T20 Blast games in London. I also don't see them keeping grass because they would want the match to last at least four days," Panesar added. Considering conditions at Oval, Umesh might play ahead of Thakur Not only spin, history suggests the ball tends to reverse a bit at the Oval. On that note, Panesar expects Rohit to play seamer Umesh Yadav ahead of the bowling all-rounder Shardul Thakur. Elaborating on this, Panesar said with Umesh offering an express speed of above 140 kmph and considering the old ball does talk, he should be the first choice other than Mohammed Siraj and Shami. "It will also be interesting to see who the seamers will be as they have a lot of options there as well. India are the stronger side in my opinion on all fronts. As they will get extra batting options with Ashwin and Jadeja, I would go with Umesh as the third pacer," Monty said. “He is the guy Rohit can go to and say 'I want you to bowl five overs at 140 plus and rough up the Australian batters'. You will need that extra pace. "The ball does reverse at The Oval, and we have seen how good the Indian bowlers are when it comes to reverse swing. They can get the ball to move more than the Australian pacers,” he added. WATCH WION LIVE HERE:

Not just Indian fans, but the Australian dressing room is also unsure of what bowling line-up India will go ahead with against Oz in the WTC Final. Daniel Vettori, a Kiwi legend and the assistant coach of the Australian team, has admitted the confusion around the same is also keeping the mighty Aussies on their toes ahead of the one-off clash at The Oval in London, starting June 7th.

While Aussies expect Ravindra Jadeja to play and bat at the number six spot following a brilliant IPL season, Vettori had some words for Ravi Ashwin and seam bowling all-rounder Shardul Thakur – who are in contention to make it to the XI. Speaking to the local media ahead of Thursday’s training session at the Kent Country Cricket Ground in Beckenham, Vettori revealed talks on what XI India will play in the crunch clash are happening. ALSO READ: WTC Final: Ravi Shastri picks between Ishan Kishan and KS Bharat, says 'if India play two spinners then...' "We have been debating that," Vettori said, as quoted by the ICC. "I think Jadeja will play because of the batting he brings to the table and how successful he has been at that No.6 position. "Then the question will be around that fourth seamer and the all-rounder in Thakur and Ashwin, but they are (both) pretty good choices," Vettori added. Time for Ashwin-Jadeja magic at the Oval While Ashwin is India’s second-highest wicket-taker in Tests with 472 scalps to his name, the veteran offie had just played one Test at the venue – in 2014, where he returned with three for 72. In England, Ashwin’s record is not that bad – as he had picked 18 wickets from seven games at a decent average of 28.11. Since the Oval has a history of offering some assistance to the spinners later in the game, going ahead with Jadeja and Ashwin is one risk Rohit could be tempted to take. "Ashwin is an incredible bowler, and he will be the first choice in most teams, and just with their combinations, it may lead to that (him missing selection)," Vettori said. "We expect The Oval to behave how it always behaves. "It is a good wicket, but it can offer a lot to the spinners as the game goes on.” Besides, going in with a combination of two spinners and three seamers, India can also opt to play four seamers and one spin-bowling all-rounder. Though Umesh Yadav and Jaydev Unadkat - who suffered respective injuries during IPL 2023 are training hard ahead of the WTC Final, their injury status remains unclear. If deemed fit, both could also get picked, considering the conditions. WATCH WION LIVE HERE:

WTC Final: Confusion around India's bowling line-up is keeping Australia on its toes, admits Daniel Vettori

India’s Ravichandran Ashwin has regained his number spot in the International Cricket Council (ICC) Test bowler’s rankings after he leapfrogged England’s James Anderson. Ashwin was named joint Player of the Series for his impressive showing with both bat and ball, scalping 25 wickets in the four matches in the series. Along with Ashwin, former India skipper Virat Kohli too had a productive week after his 186-run knock against Australia in Ahmadabad as he now resides in 13th place.

Ashwin makes leapfrogs Anderson

The veteran Indian star was enjoying the form of his life during the recently concluded Border-Gavaskar Trophy series and along with Ravindra Jadeja paired up for 47 wickets. As things stand, with Anderson not in action after the nail-biting series against New Zealand, it was the Indian spin star who took full advantage of the series to reclaim the top spot.

On the flip side, former captain Kohli had a series to forget until his final innings where he scored 186 runs to return to form. The ton in Ahmadabad was his first in 1204 days in the red-ball format and also saw him bring up his 75th international ton. Despite his excellent touch of form, the right-hand batter is not in the top 10 Test batters as Rohit Sharma and Rishabh Pant remain India’s representatives in the summit side.

Interestingly, Ravindra Jadeja has taken a deep in standings by one place and now resides at ninth place despite 22 wickets in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. He along with Jasprit Bumrah are other Indian names in the top 10 of the bowler's standings. However, both Jadeja and Ashwin reside as the top two in the all-rounder's rankings in Test cricket respectively while Axar Patel has also thrown his name in the hat with some impressive showing in the red-ball format.

In the team rankings, India have failed to pull down Australia and sit second with England in third and South Africa in fourth place. The Indian team will next take the field on Friday, March 17 against Australia at the Wankhede Stadium in the first ODI of the three-match series.

ICC Rankings: Ravichandran Ashwin leapfrogs Anderson to secure top spot in Tests; Kohli advances by 7 places

There are many head-to-head battles everyone's looking forward to in the upcoming Border-Gavaskar series but the one that has been talked about a little less is between two top-ranked players in their respective categories - Marnus Labuschagne and Ravichandran Ashwin. While Marnus is the ranked number one batter in Tests, Ashwin is second on the list of all-rounders in this format. Both these star cricketers have faced each other once in the past - during the 2020/21 BGT Down Under, and now this time they are up and ready for round 2.

Marnus, who made his Test debut in England a few years back, said scoring against extreme swing and spin is what makes a batter stand out from the rest. Having scored runs in the difficult batting conditions in England, the right-hander now wants to achieve the same against the spin-heavy Indian bowling attack on their shores as well. In a recent chat with Cricbuzz, Marnus said he is looking forward to this challenge.

"The really good batters over generations have been very good at home. But the really great ones have done very well away. There's probably two major challenges for an Australian batter away from home, India and England," Labuschagne told Cricbuzz.

Having toured Sri Lanka and Pakistan in the past year, Marnus has had the experience of facing some good spinners on dry pitches. Now ahead of his maiden away Test series in India, he knows what challenge awaits him - one that has troubled almost everyone - Ravichandran Ashwin.

Ashwin in the past has dismissed Marnus twice, but those were on the bouncy Australian pitches. On the tracks that will offer turn from day one, the Aussie batter knows what Ashwin brings to the table and how different he is from others.

"We knew Ramesh Mendis the offie, but the threat here will be R Ashwin. Not only does he have a great stock ball, he has great variations, whereas Mendis had a good stock ball, but he didn't probably have the changes like Ashwin. Nor did he have the use of the crease, the angle of the wrist, the seam angles and stuff like that. It probably comes more into your mind here because you know the bowlers," the ranked-number-one Test batter said.

"So you know Axar (Patel), (Ravindra) Jadeja and Ashwin, they are the three and maybe Kuldeep (Yadav) will be the add-on. You prepare for them. From a spin perspective, that's always on your mind. I think that's what makes you keep thinking because you're like ok how am I going to attack Ashwin. This is what faced from him before. How am I going to attack Jadeja, this is what he's bowled before," Labuschagne further added.

The first of the four Test begins in Nagpur while Delhi, Dharamsala and Ahmedabad will host the remaining ones.

Battle of Aces - Marnus Labuschagne ready for round 2 against Ravichandran Ashwin

In response to the latest reports of Pakistan planning to boycott the upcoming 50-over World Cup in India if the venue for the 2023 Asia Cup is changed, ace Test spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has come up with a solution. It was during September last year when Pakistan was allotted the hosting rights of 2023 Asia Cup, but it escalated quickly after the BCCI secretary, Jay Shah got appointed as new the head of the Asia Cricket Council (ACC), and in October said that owing to the current diplomatic relations between both countries, India will not be travelling to Pakistan for the Asia Cup.

So these meant two things – either the venue will be changed or India will opt to pull out of the multi-team tournament. In both cases, Pakistan had put forward their counter response saying if either of this happens then the PCB will boycott the 50-over World Cup in India, scheduled for later part of the year. Ramiz Raja, who was earlier replaced by Najam Sethi as the PCB’s new boss, vouched for the same while during ACC’s latest meeting in Bahrain the past week, Sethi is believed to have echoed Raja’s words to Jay Shah and other members of the council too. A final decision on the change in Asia Cup venue will be taken in the ACC's next meeting in March.

"The ACC had a constructive dialogue on the upcoming Asia Cup 2023. The Board agreed to continue discussions on operations, timelines and any other specifics with a view to ensuring the success of the tournament. An update on the matter would be taken on the next ACC Executive Board Meeting to be held in March 2023," the ACC said in its statement after the meeting.

Meanwhile, Ravi Ashwin also shared his thoughts on the same saying this tussle is nothing new, and even came up with a solution if the Asia Cup venue is changed.

"Asia Cup was supposed to take place in Pakistan. But India has announced that if it takes place in Pakistan, then we won't be participating. If you want us to participate, then do change the venue. But we would have seen this happen many times, right? When we say Asia Cup won't go to their place, they will say that they will also not come to our place. However, I think that is not possible,” Ashwin said on his YouTube channel.

Suggesting that Dubai should now be overlooked as the neutral venue as a lot of games have already been played there, Ashwin suggested Sri Lanka could also be looked up to as an option, and instead he’d rather be happy if this happens.

“The final call might be that the Asia Cup might be moved to Sri Lanka. This is important in lead-up to the 50-over World Cup. Many tournaments have taken place in Dubai. I would also be pleased if it is moved to Sri Lanka,” Ashwin added.

The man in form for Australia, opener Usman Khawaja is aware of the challenge he is getting into. Despite having form on his side, the left-handed batter isn’t discounting the spin-heavy Indian bowling line-up in their own conditions. Speaking with The Sydney Morning Herald, Khawaja showered praises on ace Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, calling him a gun. Having played against Ashwin in the past, Khawaja knows a bit or two about his tricks and how he’s going to use it. Ashwin had been a thorn in the flesh of the Aussies; in 18 Tests played in the Border-Gavaskar series throughout, Ashwin has picked up 89 wickets at an average of 31.48. Usman, who will be playing a Test in India for the first time, said Ashwin uses his crease very well that helps him pick wickets.

"Ashwin is a gun. He's very skillful, he's got a lot of tricky little variations, and he uses the crease quite well too. If you asked me the same question when I was younger, I probably wouldn't have been able to answer a lot of things because I didn't really learn about how to face what off-spinners are doing," Usman Khawaja was quoted as saying by The Sydney Morning Herald.

Adding that the wickets in India are sure to turn from day one itself and knowing that Ashwin will come into play very soon in every game, Khawaja said he needs to figure on how to play him and score runs against him.

"But it's one of those really good challenges. The wicket's going to turn here at some point, whether day one, day three, or day four, and he's going to be in the game and bowl a lot of overs. So it's all about figuring out how I'm going to play against him, how I'm going to score runs against him, what he might do. Two-time winners India will enter the 2023 home World Cup as firm favourites, says ace Test spinner Ravichandran Ashwin. It was in 2011 when India last won the 50-over World Cup under MS Dhoni’s captaincy and since then the Men in Blue managed to win just one more ICC trophy – 2013 Champions Trophy in England. Looking to end their trophy drought at home this time, India will come with all guns blazing when the tournament kicks-off in October this year. While speaking on his YouTube channel, Ravi Ashwin explained as to why the hosts will remain ahead of everyone else in the race for the title.

India has had a wonderful record at home since the 2019 World Cup in England. Not only have they defeated every touring country across formats, they did that in some style – winning matches by huge margins. Their win percentage at home is sky rocketing while their confidence is over the roof too. Citing this as one of the biggest reasons alongside playing at different venues throughout the year, Ashwin rates India’s chances of lifting the 50-over World Cup yet again very high.

"India’s ODI home record ever since the 2019 World Cup finished is extremely impressive. India have won against every team that’s travelled to India in this space, which are the West Indies, Australia, England, South Africa, and Sri Lanka. India’s home record is 14-4 in this space, which is a 78 to 80 percent win record in India. All 18 of these ODIs have happened in different venues every single time (14 venues). If you have to compare the same spree with Australia or England, the venues are pretty stock standard. They play all their Test matches at 4-5 venues, the ODIs at 2-3 venues, and so they know their venues are the back of their hand," Ashwin said on his YouTube channel.

Ashwin, who was also part of MS Dhoni’s team that won the 2011 World Cup knows what its like to play and win in home conditions. Explaining that since India’s last WC win, every team has won its home World Cup – be it Australia in 2015 or England in 2019, Ashwin said, "India are going to be a bit of short-changed because of the different wickets at different venues."

"Since the 2011 World Cup, all teams have managed to win their home World Cup: India in 2011, Australia in 2015 and England in 2019. This is no rocket science, knowing your conditions is extremely important. However, for India, in this regard is going to be a bit of short-changed because of the number of venues we play these games in. Every single time you play in some of these venues the wickets are going to be different. India does not have a stock standard Test, ODI or T20I season. You don't know how the FTP is going to pan out but it gets hard from the team or player's perspective," Ashwin added.

India’s second-leading wicket-taker in Tests will return to action during the upcoming Border-Gavaskar trophy that begins on February 9th in Nagpur.

Explaining that since India’s last WC win, every team has won its home World Cup – be it Australia in 2015 or England in 2019, Ashwin said, "India are going to be a bit of short-changed because of the different wickets at different venues." "Since the 2011 World Cup, all teams have managed to win their home World Cup: India in 2011, Australia in 2015 and England in 2019. Ravi Ashwin labels India as firm favourites to win World Cup this year, shares reason for this

Currently leading the Test rankings for batters, Australia's Marnus Labuschagne is wary of a challenge from ace Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin in the Border-Gavaskar series, that begins in less than a month's time in Nagpur. Marnus and Ashwin had crossed paths before during the India-Australia Test series Down Under two years back where Ashwin had his number twice - once in Adelaide and then in Melbourne. Though Marnus didn't get out to Ashwin after that, he still has made little tweaks to his technique to ensure he produces his best performance against the daunting Indian spin attack on the rank-turners in India. Since both are known to be using their mind-games in different forms while playing on the field, Marnus said he is ready for yet another challenge against Ashwin.

"Since then [the last series] I've already started thinking," Labuschagne said. "I've changed some of my game because of what I've heard about Ashwin and how he bowled to me. I've adapted my game to try and foil a few of his ideas and ways he goes about it, so it's going to be a lovely game of chess and I can't wait for it," Marnus said.

Having made his Test debut in late 2018, Marnus climbed to the top of the batter's chart in such a short period. Following a super impressive summer at home this time where he notched up centuries and double hundreds against West Indies and South Africa, Marnus will now be busy playing the ongoing Big Bash League with Brisbane Heats. After that he will start preparing for the India series.

Talking about what he has on his mind, Marnus said he has been thinking extensively about different scenarios like what he's going to do against different bowlers on the tour. Though he said he already has some plans in place against the Indian spinners, it's just about executing them now.

"The preparation starts so far back. People think, right now it's Big Bash then you start thinking - but the thinking happens way ahead. You start processing everything in your mind, you go through every scenario of what bowler you are going to come across. I've already thought about my plans, so now it's just about executing. Finding out, 'That works, that doesn't work. How can that part of my game fit in?', and just piece the puzzle together and make sure the puzzle is ready when it's game time. That's the key, and that's how all preparation happens," Labuschagne said.

Adding that the contest against India is something he's looking forward to, the right-handed batter said despite playing some good cricket lately the bigger challenge will be to win the Border-Gavaskar series, and tackling 'Bazball' in Ashes later this year.

"I can't wait, so excited for the next 10 Test matches. We've played really well, people know we are very good at home, very tough to beat...but the challenge we have going two away series in a row, that's going to be awesome. I can't wait for the challenge against spin in India and can't wait for the challenge of Bazball versus Ronball," Marnus concluded.

India and Australia will square off in first of the four-match Test series in Nagpur on February 9th.

IND vs AUS 2023: 'I've already thought about my plans against Ravichandran Ashwin' - Marnus Labuschagne

The Indian team ended 2022 with a Test series win over Bangladesh in Dhaka on Sunday, December 25th. On day four of the second Test, Ravichandran Ashwin and Shreyas Iyer stitched a 71-run stand for the eighth wicket to ensure India romps home with three wickets in hand.

Chasing 145 in the fourth innings on a tricky track, India were in a spot of bother having lost four wickets inside 50 runs at stumps on day three. The start of day four wasn't pleasing either as they lost set-batter Axar Patel, first-innings hero Rishabh Pant and night-watchman Jaydev Unadkat quite early. With India reeling at 74-7 at one stage, it did look like they might head home without winning a series on this tour, and losing a test to Bangladesh.

For Bangladesh, all-rounder Mehidy Hasan picked up a five-for in the second innings, including the big scalps of Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Cheteshwar Pujara and even Rishabh Pant.

Shreyas Iyer, on the other hand, stood out as the star performer for team India not only in this match but across both Tests. Having scored an impressive 87 in the first innings followed by an unbeaten 29 in the second, Iyer pressed his case for the upcoming Australia series at home next year.

While Ashwin was awarded the Player of the Match, India’s number 3 Cheteshwar Pujara was named the Player of the Series.

BAN vs IND 2022, 1st Test: Kuldeep Yadav, Shubman Gill shine in India's 188-run win over Bangladesh

Ace Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin opened up about India’s World T20 campaign in Australia that ended with India losing the semi-final clash against England by ten wickets. For the second straight year, India failed to reach the finals of a T20 World Cup, leaving its fans all across the world disappointed.

Led by Rohit Sharma, the Indian team started off well, winning their opening match against arch-rivals Pakistan by four wickets. With the win over the Netherlands in the following match, India looked upbeat about their aim of winning their second T20 World Cup. However, a loss at the hands of South Africa in their next match in Perth broke their winning run. Afterward, two big wins over Bangladesh and Zimbabwe meant India stood first in their group.

Speaking on his YouTube channel post the world cup loss, India’s Ravichandran Ashwin said, "Everyone would have felt bad seeing team India not win the tournament or reach the final. I agree; it would have been shattering. I don't think any excuse will make you forget it. Definitely, it is a disappointing moment. But we all have to move on."

However, Ashwin was clear of the opinion that just one loss cannot define India’s World Cup campaign as ‘disappointing’, and instead, he said reaching the semis was an achievement in itself.

"We can't call it a disappointing campaign. We lost in the semi-finals. Reaching the semi-finals and finals can be considered an achievement. But from an Indian fan's point of view and the expectations they have of this team, I totally understand the fans' disappointment."

"But we players are at least 200-300 times more disappointed than what you all went through."

Reaching semis can be considered an achievement: R Ashwin on India’s failed T20 World Cup campaign

Days have passed, and yet people are still thinking about that epic thrilling match between Pakistan and India in the T20 World Cup.

Watched by over a billion people, the cricket match had every bit of drama that one would expect from arch-rivals India and Pakistan.

Not only it was memorable for its thrilling end, but Virat Kohli’s heroics in lifting India’s chances from a near defeat was further icing on the cake.

But there was another player whose contribution was minor yet significant. It was Indian all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin who hit the winning run after bravely leaving the ball before for a wide for a tie—which was especially lauded by Kohli when he mentioned in the post-match talk.

In his YouTube channel, the Indian offspinner shed details on the high-voltage match, what went through his mind when he came out to bat and Kohli’s innings.

The enormity of the Indo-Pak game

An India-Pak game never feels like any other game at all, as far as I know. I have been playing since 2011, and every time I play against Pakistan, the magnitude and the enormous nature of the game keeps on increasing.

I feel honoured and privileged to be a part of the game.

On Pakistan’s innings

They batted first and put up 158 on the scoreboard. It was extremely cold that day in the MCG for a cricket match and it was hostile. Even while playing, our hands got extremely numb.

They had posted a score and I thought that we could have restricted them to 140-odd runs because the ball was moving a lot early on.

But still I thought that given our batting strength, we will be able to chase down the score very easily.

On facing Pakistan’s bowlers

And just when we survived the first over of Shaheen Shah Afridi without giving up any wickets, we felt a bit relaxed.

But soon, we saw a fiery spell from Haris Rauf. It made me think that Pakistan has a great lineup of players.

In the past four years that we have played against them, they have gone from strength to strength.

They have been playing some really good cricket. And for that type of epic game of cricket to happen, you need your opposition to bring their A-game. For a fantastic game, their role is equally important.

What a wonderful display of bowling that was. Both Haris Rauf and Naseem Shah bowled like pros.

On his thoughts when India was 45/4

The memory is still vivid. We were 30/4. And in the 10th over, we were 45/4.

I was padded up from third over itself, thinking that I would just go as a powerplay enforcer should wickets fall down quickly.

There were many thoughts running on my mind. From 45/4, I thought that the only way to win the game was if Hardik Pandya and Virat Kohli scored 60 runs each. And I was assuming that if the situation came, I would do my bit with the bat and take the team through.

Dressing room’s environment

Rahul Dravid was sitting in front of me and I never moved an inch from where I was sitting. Dinesh (Karthik) was padded up in that place. For that cold weather, we both went to the MCG hallway and kept running.

On what Virat Kohli said to him in the middle

Coming to Virat Kohli, I really think some spirit went inside him that day. After 45 balls, he transformed into something else.

When I went to bat, 2 runs were required from 1 ball, Virat was so pumped up and told me to get those runs.

But I calmly thought to myself, “You can do it by hitting in all the areas, but how can I? I will definitely try whatever I can.

On Dinesh Karthik

As I walked in to bat, I cursed Dinesh Karthik for a second and then later thought, “No no, we still have time, let us do what we were here for.

When Ashwin came out to bat

It was perhaps one of my longest walks to the centre of the ground, that’s what I felt. It kind of reminded me of Einstein’s theory of relativity.

Then I saw Virat Kohli and he told me so many things. But I thought of only one thing after seeing him. “God has given you so much today. So how will he ever let me down? So at least for you, won’t he let me get these runs?”

See the ball, then place it in a vacant space and just run, this is what I thought to myself.

I asked him a couple of questions, “Is he bowling onto the leg stump? Where is he bowling?”

Kohli replied, “Yes, he is bowling onto the legs, give some room and whack him over covers.”

I was like, “Whack? Dude, I have just come and so freezing out here.” This is what I thought to myself. How can I say this to a guy who is battling like a possessed man.

On leaving the last ball for wide

The moment I saw the ball going down the leg side, I decided not to have any business playing it and decided to leave it alone and got one run for the wide. As soon as I got that run, I was so relaxed and happy. Now, (I thought to myself) no one will throw stones at my home! (laughs) If I can lift the ball and place it somewhere, it will be good.

On the winning moment

I thought God has made this guy (Kohli) smash Haris Rauf over his head for a 6 on the back foot and over the square leg for another with a flick. Won’t God allow me to chip over the infield in some vacant area? And thank God, it did. What a moment.

The enormity of the Indo-Pak game An India-Pak game never feels like any other game at all, as far as I know. I have been playing since 2011, and every time I play against Pakistan, the magnitude and the enormous nature of the game keeps on increasing. I feel honoured and privileged to be a part of the game. On Pakistan’s innings They batted first and put up 158 on the scoreboard. On facing Pakistan’s bowlers And just when we survived the first over of Shaheen Shah Afridi without giving up any wickets, we felt a bit relaxed. On his thoughts when India was 45/4 The memory is still vivid. Dressing room’s environment Rahul Dravid was sitting in front of me and I never moved an inch from where I was sitting. Dinesh (Karthik) was padded up in that place. For that cold weather, we both went to the MCG hallway and kept running. On what Virat Kohli said to him in the middle Coming to Virat Kohli, I really think some spirit went inside him that day. After 45 balls, he transformed into something else. When I went to bat, 2 runs were required from 1 ball, Virat was so pumped up and told me to get those runs. But I calmly thought to myself, “You can do it by hitting in all the areas, but how can I? I will definitely try whatever I can. On Dinesh Karthik As I walked in to bat, I cursed Dinesh Karthik for a second and then later thought, “No no, we still have time, let us do what we were here for. When Ashwin came out to bat It was perhaps one of my longest walks to the centre of the ground, that’s what I felt. It kind of reminded me of Einstein’s theory of relativity. Then I saw Virat Kohli and he told me so many things. But I thought of only one thing after seeing him. “God has given you so much today. So how will he ever let me down? So at least for you, won’t he let me get these runs?” See the ball, then place it in a vacant space and just run, this is what I thought to myself. I asked him a couple of questions, “Is he bowling onto the leg stump? Where is he bowling?” Kohli replied, “Yes, he is bowling onto the legs, give some room and whack him over covers.” I was like, “Whack? Dude, I have just come and so freezing out here.” This is what I thought to myself. How can I say this to a guy who is battling like a possessed man. ‘Virat Kohli was batting like a possessed man that day’: Ashwin on India vs Pak T20 World Cup

India's Ravichandran Ashwin recently offered his take on Shaheen Afridi and his athletic prowess, claiming that he would fetch a hefty price if he participated in the IPL.

Afridi previously demolished India's India's top order to wreck their 2021 ICC T20 World Cup. However, the Men in Blue can breathe a sigh of relief as he has been ruled out of Pakistan's Asia Cup squad due to an injury.

Ashwin recently revealed how Pakistan's team will be affected by his absence as they get ready to kick off their Asia Cup campaign against arch-rivals India.

"Shadab Khan and Haris Rauf bowled well the last time we faced Pakistan, but it was Shaheen Afridi's opening burst that broke the game at the top. A major setback for them ahead of this game is Afridi's injury."

He subsequently offered fans some insight into Afridi's prospects in the IPL auction, claiming that he could have commanded a price of about 14-15 crores.

"I have thought a lot about how crazy it would have been if Shaheen Afridi had been there in an IPL auction. A tall left-arm seamer who sets the game with the new ball and also unleashes yorkers at the death. He might have gone for 14-15 crore had he been there at the IPL auction," said Ashwin.

Despite Afridi's absence, Ashwin believes The Shaheens have what it takes to offer any team in the tournament a run for their money. He further hailed the Men in Green as some of the most talented players in the world.

Ravichandran Ashwin claims Shaheen Afridi could have bagged a hefty '14-15 crore' contract in IPL

Former Pakistan cricketer Saqlain Mushtaq recently commented on Ravichandran Ashwin's prowess in the white-ball format of cricket. Praising his versatility, Mushtaq admitted Ashwin should have returned to active contention in the Indian cricket team long ago.

India enjoyed a great variety of talent when it came to picking their playing squad for the upcoming Asia Cup tournament. While a number of players have newly been selected to represent the country, there are some others who have returned to the fold after a significant amount of time.

One among those making their return to active contention is Ravichandran Ashwin, whose inclusion has come as a breath of fresh air for many. Ashwin has been in and out of the squad after consistently recording rather impressive performances.

Discussing his stint in international cricket, which has admittedly been something of a roller-coaster ride, the former Pakistani off-spinner slammed Indian selectors for ignoring Ashwin's talent and wasting his time by excluding him from the white-ball setup.

‘One of the greats’- Former Pakistan cricketer hails Ravichandran Ashwin as 'world-class'

Ahead of India's tour of England, wily off-spinner R Ashwin has tested positive for Covid-19. Thus, the 35-year-old spin-bowling all-rounder hasn't left for England along with the rest of the squad and will remain in quarantine for the time being.

After completing his medical protocols, Ashwin will travel to England but might miss Rohit Sharma & Co.'s three-day practice game versus Leicestershire, ahead of the rescheduled fifth and final Test versus Ben Stokes' England.

"Ashwin hasn't travelled with the squad to UK as he has tested positive for Covid-19 before departure," a BCCI source told the news agency PTI. "But we are hopeful that Ashwin will recover well in time before the Test match starts on July 1. However, Ashwin might miss the practice game against Leicestershire,” the source added.

Ashwin will be eager to recover in time and be a part of India's squad, who have a chance to create history and win their first-ever Test series in England since 2007. In 2021, Virat Kohli-led India had an unassailable 2-1 lead in the five-match series before the final encounter, in Manchester, was abandoned due to Covid crisis in the Indian camp. Now, Rohit & Co. will be desperate to finish off the incomplete 2021 series in style, by winning the final Test in Edgbaston, which gets underway on July 01.

For the unversed, the first batch of the Indian team had left for England on June 16. They are already in Leicester and practicing under the watchful eyes of bowling coach Paras Mhambrey and batting coach Vikram Rathour. After the initial batch, the likes of Rishabh Pant, Shreyas Iyer and head coach Rahul Dravid left for England on June 20, a day after the completion of the India-South Africa home T20Is (which ended in a 2-2 scoreline).

Meanwhile, Ireland-bound Indian T20I team have been given a three-day rest and will leave for Dublin either on June 23 and 24. Hardik Pandya-led Team India will play two T20Is versus Ireland, on June 26 and 28.

India spinner R Ashwin tests positive for COVID-19, does not board flight to England: Report

It was a surprising move by Rajasthan Royals to send Ravichandran Ashwin at the No 3 position during their Indian Premier League (IPL) encounter against Gujarat Titans.

With Devdutt Pallikal losing his wicket, RR went with the surprising option to promote the veteran all-rounder but the experiment did not work as he was dismissed after making just eight runs in as many balls.

Ashwin was used as a floater for Chennai Super Kings earlier if this was the first time that he was promoted to No 3. Former Indian cricket team player Sanjay Manjrekar was not happy with the move and called it ‘baffling’ and ‘ridiculous’ as RR slumped to defeat against Gujarat Titans.

"Especially when Sanju Samson is the next guy in, you did not like him at No.4, but then you had Yashasvi Jaiswal, but you dropped him. You had the option of sending Samson to No.3 with Buttler going the way he was. I can understand something out of the box, like pinch-hitter when there are two steady batters.”

“But Buttler was going hell for leather, but then you sent in Ashwin. It was a bizarre move. I think Ashwin was sent as a pinch-hitter but there was no need for it because you do that when the score is 215-220 and you slightly doubt your ability to score that quickly, so you need someone out there to set the cat among the pigeons," Manjrekar told ESPNCricinfo.
