IND vs WI 1st Test: Former India player backs Ravi Ashwin for greatness, says 'he is undoubtedly...'
Ravichandran Ashwin could be destined for greatness according to former India player Deep Dasgupta after the spinner added another feather to his impressive cap in the first Test against West Indies. Ashwin, after scalping five wickets on Day 1 became the player with the most fifers among active players, leapfrogging James Anderson with 33. Dasgupta has now tipped him for further greatness and thinks he could be the difference-maker between the two sides.
Ashwin destined for greatness
"The difference in the class of Ravichandran Ashwin the bowler, and the [West Indies] batters was evident. He would have been disappointed not to be a part of the final, but leaving the disappointment behind, he came and was a thorough professional and did what he does," Deep Dasgupta said while in conversation with ESPNCricinfo.
The ex-player also praised Ashwin for the varieties he offers with the cherry in his hand. Ashwin has been a spin revolution in Indian cricket after the departure of Anil Kumble and Harbhajan Singh.
"He [Ashwin] has so many varieties in his armoury, and he also knows when to use it. It's one thing to have these variations and it's another thing that you know when to use it."

Ashwin had a productive outing on Day 1 of the Test match as he ran riot with the cherry in his hand. After winning the toss, the decision to bat first backfired on the hosts after Ashwin’s storm saw West Indies reduced to 76/5. There was little resilience shown by Alick Athanaze who top-scored with 47 but Ashwin’s five-for saw West Indies bowled out for 150.
India start brightly
After the hosts were bowled out for 150, India started on the front foot as they came unscratched at the stumps. India ended the day at 80/0 as Rohit was unbeaten on 30 while the impressive Jaiswal was on 40. India will now have the opportunity to build on Day 2 as they will look to gain a big lead in the contest to assert their dominance on the Caribbean side.
