<p>Ace Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has surpassed Australian great Nathan Lyon on the wickets tally in Tests, becoming the seventh highest wicket-takers (531* and counting) with his second scalp of the day against New Zealand on day one of the Pune Test. With three wickets thus far inside the second session, Ashwin leads Lyon in the wickets category in WTC history, with his number reading 189, while Lyon has picked 187 thus far.</p>

<p>Playing his 104th Test, 39th in the WTC cycle since its inception in 2019, Ashwin has the best strike rate for a spinner (44.44*) and the second-best behind Proteas quick Kagiso Rabada (38.87*). In 74 innings thus far, he has 189 wickets (and counting to his name) – a tally testament to his greatness as a Test cricket legend.</p>

While many have speculated Tamil Nadu’s own Shahrukh Khan to take up that vacant place, ace India spinner Ravi Ashwin reckons CSK might go for someone else who is a like-to-like replacement for Rayudu.</p>

<p>Speaking on his YouTube channel, Ashwin picked one name that CSK is likely&nbsp;to chase at the upcoming IPL 2024 mini-auction scheduled in Dubai on Tuesday (Dec 19), and it’s not the ‘apparent finisher’ Shahrukh Khan.</p>

<p>“I have a feeling that they will invest in Karun Nair. They are searching for a replacement for Ambati Rayudu. Shahrukh is not a replacement for him at No. 4. I have no idea who they are going to play in that position this season.”&nbsp;</p>

<p>“They might try a left-hand option, but if you look at CSK’s track record, they have never gone for an unknown commodity. They have never played anybody who just did well in their first season of Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy,” Ashwin explained.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Without over-committing, Ashwin said, “Folks, brace yourself to see him play for the joint-most successful IPL side in history.”</p>

<p>“He is somebody who can play spin well, could sweep and reverse sweep. MS Dhoni loves it when there is a batter who can play between the top order and the middle order in the No. 4 slot, especially in Chennai. I feel Karun Nair is perfect for that,” Ashwin expressed.</p>

<p>Playing three spinners, it was Jasprit Bumrah who started India’s trade of wickets when he got the better of Mitchell Marsh for a duck on the second ball of the third over. David Warner (41) and Steve Smith (46) would then stitch a 69-run stand for the second wicket before Kuldeep sent the former back to the pavilion. Smith and Labuschagne (27) then tried to bring the Aussies back on track before Ravindra Jadeja&nbsp;showed his class.</p>

<p>On the first ball of the 28th over, Jadeja stunned Smith with an outside the leg stump ball that surprised him before his stumps were castled. Smith was left stranded after his dismissal as he did not judge the flight of the ball which surprised him. For Jadeja’s credit, he played the mind games to get the former skipper out on 46.</p>

<p>The Aussies quickly went from 110/2 to 119/5, losing wickets in succession to put India in the box seat in Chennai. Local favourite Ravi Ashwin would then join the party when he got the better of Cameron Green (8), while Glenn Maxwell (15) was dismissed in the previous over.</p>

<p>With Australia 140/7, the tail-enders showed good resilience to steer their side to 199 with India now needing to push with their batting line-up. For India, Jadeja ended with three wickets while Bumrah and Kuldeep scalped two each. There were wickets each for Ashwin, Hardik Pandya, and Mohammed Siraj.</p>

<p>India are likely to open with Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan in Shubman Gill’s absence while KL Rahul could be deployed in the middle order with Shreyas Iyer. India have opted not to use Suryakumar Yadav in the contest while Shardul Thakur was also dropped in favour of Ashwin.</p>

'Not a trial for Ashwin,' says India coach Rahul Dravid before 1st ODI against Australia

<p>Former India cricketer Mohammad&nbsp;Kaif has voiced his opinion on the inclusion of Ravichandran Ashwin for the upcoming ODI series against Australia as the spin master looks for a potential entry into the World Cup squad. Ashwin, on Tuesday, was selected in India’s squad for the upcoming three-match series against Australia as they look for a potential backup to Axar Patel. The left-arm bowling all-rounder was injured in the final Super Four contest of the Asia Cup against Bangladesh and consequently missed the summit clash against Sri Lanka.</p>

<h2><strong>Kaif opines on Ashwin</strong></h2>

<p>"If Axar hadn't been injured then we wouldn't have seen this move and Ashwin would have never been in the scene. Now Axar has suffered a strain injury and that takes time to recover from. No matter what they say he will be back in a week but such injuries take at least 2-3 weeks to recover from. That is why they went for the experience in Ashwin. And remember, there is no comparison between Ashwin and Sundar. He has 900 wickets (712) across formats,” Kaif said&nbsp;in a conversation with Star Sports.</p>

Former India cricketer Mohammad Kaif has voiced his opinion on the inclusion of Ravichandran Ashwin for the upcoming ODI series against Australia as the spin master looks for a potential entry into the World Cup squad. Ashwin, on Tuesday, was selected in India’s squad for the upcoming three-match series against Australia as they look for a potential backup to Axar Patel. The left-arm bowling all-rounder was injured in the final Super Four contest of the Asia Cup against Bangladesh and consequently missed the summit clash against Sri Lanka. Kaif opines on Ashwin "If Axar hadn't been injured then we wouldn't have seen this move and Ashwin would have never been in the scene. Now Axar has suffered a strain injury and that takes time to recover from. No matter what they say he will be back in a week but such injuries take at least 2-3 weeks to recover from. That is why they went for the experience in Ashwin. And remember, there is no comparison between Ashwin and Sundar. He has 900 wickets (712) across formats,” Kaif said in a conversation with Star Sports. The Indian team will have to look for reinforcements after Axar was not available for the Asia Cup final while he also misses out on the Australia series. The Indian team management will have another week to decide the final World Cup squad before the deadline of September 27. Ashwin’s inclusion in the squad though has raised eyebrows, having not played ODI cricket for more than 18 months. He last played for India in January 2022 against South Africa. The three-match ODI series will start on Friday, September 22 with a near fully-fit Australia squad ready to make a statement. The Aussies will be led by returning Pat Cummins while they will also have the services of Mitchell Starc and Steven Smith. A Test veteran Ashwin last featured for India in an ODI in January 2022, and with selectors almost confirming the provisional squad for the two mega events – Asia Cup and CWC 2023, chances of him getting a final run in this format look&nbsp;bleak.</p>

<p>From 2011 to 2017, Ashwin featured in almost all major ICC events for India, but following a mediocre run in the 2017 Champions Trophy Final, selectors overlooked him. Though he returned to play the previous two T20 World Cups in the UAE and Australia, respectively, selectors didn’t seem too impressed with his white-ball credentials, and as a result, he remained out of the scheme.</p>

<p>Speaking with Times of India (TOI), Ashwin said he has no regrets about not being in the core plans for the World Cup later this year and that he has stopped thinking about it in the first place. Explaining he is in a happy space in terms of his life and where his cricket career stands, Ashwin said he stopped thinking about things that were not in his hand.</p>

<p>"I don't think like that, because the selection of the team is not my job. I had decided long back that I would not think about stuff that is not in my hand. I am honestly in a very good space in terms of life and my cricket and I try to keep negativity away from my thought process," Ashwin told TOI.</p>

<p>Ashwin added he is not likely to be around for the marquee event, but India’s most successful off-spinner in Tests still wishes to see the home lift trophy.</p>

<p>"I live for the day, and I have no unfinished business. But it's true that I would love to see India winning the World Cup again, even if I am not playing," Ashwin added.</p>

<h2>BCCI set to name Asia Cup squad on August 21</h2>

<p>Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee will name the squad for the Asia Cup 2023 on Monday. While the focus would remain on returning pair of KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer, selectors will have to take some crucial calls regarding the backup player for the number four slot and India’s pacers and spinners for the six-team tournament starting August 30.</p>

<p>Meanwhile, with no off-spinner available for selection for the CWC (given Washington Sundar will be busy with Asian Games), there is an outside chance the selectors might pick Ravi Ashwin to fill the spot.</p>
