Sridevi death: Shah Rukh Khan, Rajinikanth, Deepika, Ranveer visit Anil Kapoor's home to offer their condolences

When the Padmaavat controversy broke out, social media was quick to pick sides. While most spoke out against Karni Sena and supported Bhansali's film, there was an eerie silence over the matter from some of the biggest names in Bollywood. Most people condemned Amitabh Bachchan, Aamir, Salman and Shah Rukh Khan for keeping mum about the matter, and for not making any public statement. Some even blamed them for being scared and hence choosing to keep mum.

SRK, though, expressed that the silence was maintained for a reason.

On Tuesday, addressing the Padmaavat controversy for the first time, Khan said celebrities are not scared of expressing their opinion, but if sometimes they choose to remain silent, it is for a valid reason.

Khan spoke during a panel discussion on "Media - Shaping the Future and Entertainment" at "Magnetic Maharashtra Convergence 2018" in Mumbai on Tuesday night.

Khan was asked if the government should take more step to protect the freedom of artistes` expression and whether celebrities should come up with their opinion fearlessly. But he stressed that actors are not afraid of speaking their mind.

When he was pointed out about how many stars chose to keep mum over the Padmaavat controversy, Khan said they simply "ignored such non-constitutional people for a greater reason".

"People said why are these big stars are not coming up with their opinion and hiding behind? Honestly, we don`t have to hide anywhere. The simple truth is, the more prominent actors talk about them, the more popularity they (Karni Sena) would gain. The ideal action is to ignore them, not to talk about them," the actor said.

Without mentioning the name of the film, SRK stated that he had also suggested Padmaavat team to not react as that would encourage the protestors more. "If more prominent actors, actresses and directors came and talked about this film—as a matter of fact, many times I suggested to their team, not to talk about this, just keep quiet because you are giving wind to fire. And suddenly these people are getting more recognised by the virtue of being on all the news channels. So don’t give them importance," the actor said.

He pointed out that people even said that big stars are busy making money. "But that`s not true. We love the society that we are living in and we are creating entertainment for our people. We might at times not voice our opinion, because as a 52-year-old father, I want all the children and family go and watch the film in theatres, safe and sound.

"I want kids to go back home safely after watching the film, even if they dislike my film. I am more concern about the security of my son and other kids... That is the responsibility of an entertainer."

However, SRK believes that creative people will always find a way to make their film and speak their mind.

"I can vouch for many filmmakers that nobody makes films to incite people, that is never the intention. Nobody wants to hurt any sentiment of any region, religion or others. No matter what, they will say what they have to say," he said.

They have delivered three successive blockbusters and now reports suggest that Sanjay Leela Bhansali has signed a three-film contract with actors Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone.
"Bhansali has not just been bowled over by their performances but also enamoured by the dedication shown by these actors. Since Padmaavat's shoot was stalled and the release was delayed, they had to contribute a lot more to the film," revealed a trade insider to The Asian Age.

Bhansali, in an earlier interview, had stated how he was 'not done' working with Deepika.

Deepika is so fabulous; she is such a jaan. I just love her. All her hard work and brilliance that she brings to the set is effortless... It's such a pleasure to work with someone who does what she is doing at that moment with absolute honesty... Her performances are so detailed and nuanced. I'm not done with her yet," Bhansali had said.

About Ranveer, he had told DNA, "No other filmmaker understands Ranveer the way I do. Ranveer and I have a great chemistry and understanding. I know how to direct him... He's a very special actor. He has so much energy."

Have Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone signed a three film contract with Sanjay Leela Bhansali?

It has been a long, tedious journey to the cinema halls for Bhansali's Padmaavat. Troubles the film began in January 2017 when activists of Shri Rajput Karni Sena assaulted Bhansali on the sets in Jaipur, followed by vandalism on the movie`s Kolhapur set. Protests against its release continue to pose law and order issues even now.

Interestingly, Trade analysts feel that the protest may affect some places but for the most, the interest around the film has piqued due to the ongoing protest. The curiosity will ensure audiences go and watch the film.

Paid previews for the film on Wednesday evening registered promising footfalls. In Delhi-NCR, the 3D Prime category for PVR Cinemas was sold out, according to an online ticketing platform.

"The advance booking is good and strong, especially in metros. People who have seen it have said there`s nothing to hurt sentiments. So, `Padmaavat` will take a bumper opening and will perform big at the box office.
The Supreme Court on Tuesday cleared the decks for the all-India release of the movie, saying all states must comply with its order not to stand in the way of the film. But violence erupted in Ahmedabad on Tuesday evening as protestors vandalised cinema halls in the city.

The Karni Sena is adamant about not letting the movie release. It has alleged historical inaccuracies in the film and continues to stage violent protests in Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan. States are ensuring adequate security for cinema halls.

Meanwhile, the makers have maintained that the film is an adaptation of Sufi poet Malik Muhammad Jayasi`s epic poem Padmavat and glorifies the Rajput ethos of honour, bravery and sacrifice.

Trade analysts have also predicted that the film may touch the Rs 100 crore mark by Saturday owing to a long weekend.
Padmaavat: Will Sanjay Leela Bhansali's magnum opus create magic at the box office?

They had stopped making public appearance but on Tuesday, Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh seemed relaxed as they stepped out, hand in hand, for the special screening of their latest film Padmaavat. The actors wore traditional clothes- Deepika was in a white flowing anarkali and Ranveer wore pajama kurta - and did not pose for the papparazzi as they walked inside PVR Juhu, Mumbai to watch their film.

This was perhaps the couple's first public appearance together ever since the controversy around the film broke out in early January 2017 while they were still filming for it. Reports also suggested that the two were asked not to make any public appearances while the film's shooting was on. But on the Tuesday, the duo seemed relaxed as they walked in for the screening.

Sanjay Leela Bhansali was also seen at the screening. The film's other leading man, Shahid Kapoor came in with wife Mira and family memebers including brother Ishaan Khattar, mother Neelima Azim, father Pankaj Kapoor and his wife Supriya Pathak.

This comes after the Multiplex Association of India said it has decided not to screen the film in four states. "We have decided not to play the film in four states — Rajasthan, Gujarat, MP and Goa — as the local management has told us that the law and order situation is not conducive," said Deepak Asher, president of the association. SC has agreed to hear on Monday the contempt pleas filed. It is to note that these states had earlier moved SC asking for a blanket ban on the film as it would create a law and order scene in the disturbed states as Karni Sena protestors feel 'hurt' by the portrayal of their queen 'Padmavati' in the film. The court had then ruled in favour of the film and ordered for a country-wide release of the film asking the state governments to provide security to its people and ensure the release of the film. Deepika Padukone shares photo with 'main man' on 'Padmaavat' release date

By now half of the country has watched Padmaavat. Even those who haven't - I am sure - intend to watch it in the coming days. Because even if you aren't a fan of Sanjay Leela Bhansali's film or Deepika Padukone, or just don't like period dramas, Karni Sena has ensured in the past few months that you get curious about Bhansali's magnum opus and rush to watch it in theaters to understand what the fuss is all about.

Here's some good news for those who haven't watched it yet. There really isn't anything offensive about the Rajput community in the film. Instead, it glorifies the community to the hilt. The film also for the first time, shows a leading man as bisexual. Okay, it just hints that Khilji swung both ways. But that itself is an achievement from Bollywood which has for generations treated members of the LGBT community as comic relief in films. Neither has any of the leading men in commercial cinema played a character who could lust over women and also get 'physically' comfortable with his prime confidant at the same time like Khilji does with his manservant Malik Kafur in Padmaavat.

It's a first in Bollywood and hopefully, the crackling performances by both Ranveer Singh and Jim Sarbh will encourage more writers to write bisexual and homosexual characters as leads in films and inspire more mainstream Bollywood actors to take up such roles.

But did Sanjay Leela Bhansali really think of breaking the taboo when he wrote Khilji and Malik Kafur's characters? Or was it an accidental breakthrough? Because if one looks at Padmaavat closely, (and shut all the unnecessary noise that Karni Sena is creating) Bhansali's film sticks to all sorts of stereotypes and plays to the gallery.

At its core, Padmaavat focusses on Khilji and his maverick, brutal ways. He is the antagonist in the film, even though the story is from his perspective. He is pitted against the moralistic, brave Rajputs.

A Muslim invader, who is ruthless, barbaric and conniving, Bhansali's depiction of Khilji is far from how the actual Sultan of Delhi was. It just clearly ticks all sorts of stereotypes that one can possibly think of while depicting a Muslim ruler. His tents are dark, he is unkempt, he philanders, plunders, loots and chomps on meat like a barbaric nomad. Something that Khilji actually wasn't.

History states that in real life Alauddin Khilji was not cruel but a great administrator and that his siege of Chittor was clearly politically motivated. Because his morals don't allow him to kill someone outside the battlefield, unarmed. He is shown as the epitome of all things right and yes, he is a Hindu ruler, a worshiper of Bhawani.

The narrative, pretty evidently, makes clear demarcations. The righteous one is Hindu, the ruthless, barbaric one is a Muslim. Khilji is flawed in every possible way. He only knows and understands the language of killing. And unlike his Hindu enemy, Khilji isn't governed by usool or marayada or shaan. Bhansali's depiction of Khilji is all black, there are no grey spots even. In the final battle scene, the antagonist wins the battle by unfair means, but the viewer's take away is of the moral victory of the righteous Rajput king.

Which is why the fact that Khilji is shown as bisexual could also be just one of the 'negative' traits that the character possesses. Maybe, the fact that he lusts over women, and even eyes his eunuch commander general is also supposed to be a flaw. That even though he is obsessed about Padmavati, he is not really loyal to anyone.

The film not just caters to a certain section of the society with its subtle jingoism, but it is also regressive in the way it over-dramatizes and glorifies something as horrible as Jauhar. And no, the disclaimer, in the beginning, doesn't help much. But that's a discussion for another day perhaps.

The irony is not lost on anyone. Bhansali plays to the gallery and his film can appeal to a larger population- going by the current sentiments of the nation, where demarcations are often made on religious lines. Yet, the film is opposed by those very people who harp about their national identity time and again.

Padmaavat releases amid high security; viewers wonder what's the fuss about

In Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Padmaavat, the eyes do the talking. They speak of the havoc that Khilji is set to create in Chittor, they speak of the determination and grit that Ratan Singh has while fighting a barbaric army and they speak of love, pride and honour when Padmavati bids farewell to her husband. Bhansali’s film scores because he makes the eyes speak. Amid the grandeur, the visually stunning frames- the three lead actors emote through their eyes and act out a known story set in the 13th century.

For a good part of 2017, the film has been in news for false news. Because when one watches the film, one can see that contrary to the claims made by protesting fringe groups and ignorant state governments, Padmaavat- if anything- upholds the honour of the Rajput community and celebrates the community's 'aan, baan and shaan'.

Bhansali creates two striking worlds- one of Alauddin Khilji which is dark, grim and unkempt. The other is of Ratan Singh and Padmavati in Chittor- which is lit up, decorated and pristine. And these two worlds collide when Raghav Chetan, a former priest tells Khilji that he can truly be a Sultan of Hind if he has the most beautiful Padmavati by his side and a control over the Rajputs. And Khilji, thus, becomes obsessed with the idea of acquiring Padmavati. But the man who only knows the language of loot, plunder and ruthless killing doesn’t understand the valour, pride and honour the Rajputs stand by. He also is unaware of the righteous Padmavati and her sharp brain who would never bow down to wishes of an invader.

Bhansali remains true to his style as he narrates age-old folklore of how Queen Padmavati opted to perform Sati instead of bowing to Khilji’s wishes in the most visually stunning way. The film is mounted on a large scale and opulence is, many of the times, a bit overwhelming. But that’s how Bhansali’s films always are. Grand, visual extravaganzas with dramatic dialogues and backdrops and Padmaavat is just that. Each scene is elaborate, almost perfect and like a painting making it a treat for the eyes for the greater part of the film.

The film’s high point is Sudeep Chatterjee’s splendid camera work. The ariel shots of the battle scene make you feel overwhelmed at the sheer magnanimity of the situation. The scenes where Padmavati and Ratan Singh romance are soft, intimate and make the viewer feel like an intruder, privy to the couple’s intimate moments while scenes involving Khiljis are chaotic, dark and grey.

The story is known one but it is the actors who make the film come alive. With just a few lines, Deepika Padukone, dressed in the gorgeous costumes, looks stunning and emotes through her eyes. So does Shahid Kapoor, a formidable actor, who delivers a very restraint performance as Rawal Ratan Singh. But the film clearly belongs to Ranveer Singh as the menacing Alauddin Khilji. With a Khal Drogo-esque look, the actor creates mayhem in the lives of Ratan Singh and Padmavati. Bhansali creates a beast, who is childlike at times, maverick at others, and completely ruthless as a Sultan. And Singh transforms himself accordingly, creating a character that will remain well etched in the minds of the cinema lovers for years to come. In fact, the film is quite literally from his point of view, and his obsession with Padmavati. They could have named the film after his character, would have saved them a lot of trouble, really.

Strangely, while Ranveer and Deepika share no scene together, they do share a strange unspoken chemistry which seems missing between Shahid and the actress.

Ranveer’s electric performance also saves the second half of the film, which drags to an extent. Because when he comes on screen, you can’t look at anyone else. His powerful presence commands your attention. Aditi Rao Hydari, as Khilji’s wife, also delivers a commendable performance, who is aware of her husband’s ruthlessness and yet takes a few bold steps against him. There is Jim Sarbh as well, playing Khilji’s manservant, a eunuch who is in love with Khilji and is a party to his plunder and ruthless killing. Sarbh shines in parts, hams in the rest.

Padmaavat review: Ranveer Singh shines in Bhansali's visually grand historical saga

Most would believe that "Padmaavat" makers can now be at ease with the Indian Supreme Court refusing to modify its earlier order on the stay on the ban on the film but the fight isn't over yet.

As per a leading daily, a share from the earning has been demanded so that the restoration of the birthplace and research institute of Malik Muhammad Jayasi can be done.

On Monday, the local body, Nagar Palik Chairperson organised a program where he announced that Bhansali's film’s earnings will come from the book by Jayasi and so the poet and his village has all the rights on it.

The Chairperson added that the village supports the film's release but expects a share in return.

Meanwhile, to ensure that fringe groups don't create havoc at the time of release, Bhansali has invited the Karni Sena to watch the movie and judge for itself.

The film is slated for a release on January 25 country-wide

Most would believe that "Padmaavat" makers can now be at ease with the Indian Supreme Court refusing to modify its earlier order on the stay on the ban on the film but the fight isn't over yet. In addition to the threat posed to the film from a fringe group, namely Shri Rajput Karni Sena, there is a new problem in the face of people from Padmaavat poet, Malik Muhammad Jayasi’s village in Amethi in Uttar Pradesh demanding a profit share from the film’s earning. Also Read: Padmaavat: Here are the first reactions to the film They stake claim to the money as Sanjay Leela Bhansali's film is based on the poem written by Malik Muhammad Jayasi.

When Karni Sena threatened to behead Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Deepika Padukone most expected the stars along with Shahid Kapoor and Ranveer Kapoor to speak out. But contrary to expectations, the film's cast maintained an eerie silence over the matter.

In a recent interview, Ranveer revealed that when he first heard Karni Sena issuing threats to chop off Deepika's nose, he was angry and wanted to react but was asked not to. "I was filled with rage. There’s no doubt about that. I had a very strong urge to act out, to speak out, but I was given strict instructions not to. And I had to respect that because I was not at the forefront of this fight. It’s the prerogative of the producers, of the director. If they were explicitly telling me that me saying something or doing something is going to complicate things further, I don’t want to complicate their lives. I want to do my bit to make sure that this film gets made and it gets released. If this is what they are asking me to do, I have to abide by that.”

“I could choose to act out destructively but I chose not to. I channeled it and I put all of it into my performance. Whatever you may feel after watching this performance is born out of having felt a certain way," the actor added.

Karni Sena had been protesting against the film ever since the crew started shooting in early January 2017. Filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali was thrashed and the sets were vandalised in Jaipur. Condemning the incident, Ranveer said, "It’s extremely disturbing. When I saw that, I was filled with rage. How dare you do that to somebody who I worship? How dare you go to my place of worship and do what you did? All of these feelings were like a tornado inside me, and I actually had to be calmed down by people around me. Now that I look back, when the film has released and is being celebrated, I think it was a good decision to channel it into my performance because that is my protest.”
Appaluding Bhansali's strength, Ranveer said, "He took his time to come out of it, understandably. But hats off to the guy when he came back, it was like a mad man. The kind of rigour and energy he was filled with was like a man possessed.”

“Eventually, these perpetrators have lost. The film has won, Mr Bhansali has won. It’s a victory, the way this film is celebrated not just in our country but across the world. The kind of numbers it is posting is an indicator of widespread audience acceptance, approval and validation. I am very happy, especially for Mr Bhansali, because he has been through the most,” the actor said.

Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Padmaavat released on January 25 and has ever since raked in more than Rs 150 crore at the box office. The film has become such a hit among US and UK audiences, that women in San Francisco even dressed up like Deepika's character in the film to go watch the movie in theatres. While the movie has been in news for all the good and bad reasons alike, the song Ghoomar from the film has earned its own fair share of mixed reactions -- starting from Karni Sena's objection to Deepika's bare midriff in the song to NBA cheerleaders performing the song at halftime in a match. Now, figure skating champion Mayuri Bhandari has taken the song to another level. She performed the song while skating on ice and created her own version of dance sequences.
