In yet another arrest of Pakistan's PTI opposition leader, former human rights minister Shireen Mazari was detained by the Islamabad Police in the early hours of Friday. Mazari's daughter and lawyer Imaan Hazir-Mazari posted a video on Twitter where armed men can be seen forcibly breaking into her home to take the former minister into custody. The video was apparently of a CCTV footage that showed gunmen wearing plain clothes jumping the door to arrest the female politician. At the time of her arrest when she was led to a police car, Mazari held up a victory sign and shouted "victory for democracy." She also denounced "state terrorism" as unacceptable.
Former Pakistani prime minister Imran Khan, who has been sent to an eight-day custody of the National Accountability Bureau’s (NAB), informed a court during a hearing that he fears for his life and that the current Shehbaz Sharif government in the country was trying to take his life inside the jail.

Khan told the court that he was afraid of meeting the same fate as Maqsood Çhaprasi', a key witness in the money laundering case against Shehbaz Sharif, who died last year.

As per a death certificate issued by Emirati authorities, Maqsood ‘Chaprasi’ died of cardiac arrest in June 2022 in the UAE. However, Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has expressed doubts about the nature of his death and called for an autonomous investigation into it.

As per Pakistani media reports, Imran Khan claimed in court that he was being heavily tortured and wasn't being allowed to use the washroom for 24 hours. He also said that the authorities will try to kill him because of his stand against the current regime, as reported by DNA.

Imran Khan said in court, “I have not been to the washroom in 24 hours.” He further added, “They give [you] an injection, and [you] slowly die."

As per AFP reports, Imran Khan’s lawyer Afzal Marwat said that the Khan was in “good spirits” but had complained of being struck on the back of the head and leg by paramilitary forces who arrested him earlier this week.

The matter is linked to the founding of Al-Qadir University. Imran Khan, his wife Bushra Bibi, and other PTI party leaders are alleged to have committed wrongdoing with regard to the Al-Qadir Trust, formed to back the university.
Later, in 2019, Bushra Bibi signed a memorandum with the private real estate firm Bahria Town in order to accept donations from them. The trust later acquired land measuring 458 kanals, 4 marlas, and 58 square feet from Bahria Town as part of their agreement.

However, according to Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah, Imran Khan worked out the division of the land and transferred 240 kanals of the donated land in the name of Farah Gogi, a close friend of Bushra Bibi.

According to Sanaullah, the value of this land had been underestimated and Khan obtained his part in the name of the institution. He further said that the previous PM sought to cover up the matter.

The scam was brought to light when the Pakistani media noted that the trust received 180 million Pakistani rupees even though the documents showed expenses of just 8.52 million Pakistani rupees.
Pakistan security forces are pulling out all the stops to protect former prime minister Imran Khan during his court appearances. As per a Twitter video posted by Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party, the forces are going to the extent of covering his entire head with what appeared to be a black bucket, presumably some kind of bullet-proof helmet. The extra caution stems from the PTI chairperson's claims that there could be another attempt on his life.

In the video, Imran Khan could be seen walking slowly towards the Lahore-based anti-terrorism court's entrance, surrounded by commandos carrying black bullet-resistant shields.

Wait, what? Imran Khan appeared in court with head covered in a 'black bucket' as protection?

Pakistan Supreme Court on Monday said that it will announce its judgement in the election delay petition case filed by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party of former Prime Minister Imran Khan on Tuesday (April 4th). The landmark case is over the country's national election regulator’s decision to postpone general elections in Pakistan's most populous province of Punjab until October 8.

As per the news agency PTI, a three-member bench headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Umar Ata Bandial, and also comprising Justice Ijazul Ahsan and Justice Munib Akhtar, reserved the judgment today. This was done after the bench heard all the parties, including the government, the PTI party, the ECP and others.

However, as per the Pakistan-based newspaper Dawn, the bench did not hear the counsel of the coalition parties.

PTI reports that the case's hearing, which lasted over a week, witnessed high drama after two judges of the original five-member bench, Justices Jamal Khan Mandokhail and Aminuddin Khan, excused themselves from the case hearing.

Following this, the Chief Justice constituted a bench comprising himself, Justice Ahsan and Justice Akhtar to proceed with the PTI petition.

On Monday, the government put forth a statement through the Attorney General for Pakistan (AGP) Mansoor Awan, asking for the formation of a full court to hear the case. It also sought the dismissal of the PTI petition in the light of what it interpreted as a "4-3" order issued by the apex court on March 1.

The CJP, however, rejected the government's request for a full court and instead suggested that a larger bench could be sought.

The apex court, in a 3-2 verdict, had ruled on March 1 that elections in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Punjab, both of which have been under caretaker governments since the provincial assemblies were dissolved in January, should be held within 90 days.

The government, however, contested the court's instructions, labelling the judgement 4-3. Citing Dawn, PTI reports that the government disputed the court directions after Justice Jamal Khan Mandokhail and Justice Syed Mansoor Ali Shah, who were among the four judges who had written additional notes in the Feb 23 order, raised objections on the constitution of the bench as well as the invocation of the apex court's suo motu jurisdiction by the chief justice.

Former Pakistan PM Imran Khan's interim bail in three cases extended till April 13

In a strongly worded letter Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, on Sunday (March 26) responded to President Dr Arif Alvi’s letter which was sent to him two days ago. The PM said that the president’s letter was “blatantly partisan” and in parts read like “a press release” of the opposition political party Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).

This was stated in reference to a letter sent by Alvi to Sharif, on Friday, asking him to direct federal and provincial authorities to assist the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to hold elections in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The request was reportedly in line with the Supreme Court’s orders to “avoid further complications”.

The president also mentioned the “use of disproportionate force” by authorities against politicians, party workers and journalists amid recent clashes with former prime minister Imran Khan’s PTI. This prompted PM Sharif to respond and “set the record of the government straight” while accusing President Alvi of constantly espousing “one-sided, anti-government views…notwithstanding your constitutional oath/office of President”.

He accused Alvi of violating his oath of office on several occasions including the order of the dissolution of the National Assembly on April 3, last year, following “illegal instructions” by the former PM Imran Khan which the Supreme Court days later also declared unconstitutional. PM Sharif also accused the president of “failure to discharge” his constitutional duty citing clause (5) of Article 91 to “call upon me to assume the office of the Prime Minister and administer the oath of office.”

He added, “Despite the foregoing and several other instances, where you actively worked towards undermining a constitutionally elected government, I have made all-out efforts to maintain a good working relationship with you. However, the contents of your letter, its tone, and language have compelled me to respond to it.”

PM Sharif also accused the president of “failure to discharge” his constitutional duty citing clause (5) of Article 91 to “call upon me to assume the office of the Prime Minister and administer the oath of office.” He added, “Despite the foregoing and several other instances, where you actively worked towards undermining a constitutionally elected government, I have made all-out efforts to maintain a good working relationship with you. However, the contents of your letter, its tone, and language have compelled me to respond to it.” The Pakistan PM addressing the country’s president also stated, “regrettably and ostensibly due to your party allegiance, you have failed to note the sheer isolation of laws, contumacious disregard of court orders, attacking the law enforcement agencies, damaging public property, attempts to create chaos, civil and political unrest, and in short, to bring the country to the brink of economic default and civil war by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-lnsaf (PTI).” In the letter, Sharif asserted that actions by the authorities were in accordance with the law and that PTI’s complete disregard for the law tarnished the image of Pakistan in the international community. He also called Alvi out for not addressing the former PM’s conduct despite being the president and described Khan’s actions as an “aggressive, rather militant, attitude of a political order in complete defiance of court orders”.
Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) party has reportedly hired a firm for lobbying in the United States to make authorities aware of the threats faced by Pakistan’s former prime minister.

Dawn newspaper, quoting a senior party leader, reported that the PTI’s US unit signed a contract with a Washington-based lobbying firm, Praia Consultants LLC, on February 21 this year. The contract will be valid for six months and can be renewed for another six-month term with mutual consent.

The New York-based PTI unit will pay $8,333 per month to the US firm. Under the contract, the firm “shall provide expert advice regarding the client’s relationship with the US government and institutions”.
