Football: Record-breaking Sergio Aguero bids farewell to Etihad Stadium in style

Manchester City cruised to their third Premier League title in four seasons, but Pep Guardiola's side are likely to face a tough defence of the crown next season.

Liverpool and Manchester United look capable of pushing the champions, while Chelsea should be in the mix after Thomas Tuchel's impressive impact on the Champions League finalists.

AFP Sport looks at how the four leading title contenders will shape up:

<h2>Manchester City</h2>

After the midway point of the season, City were virtually untouchable as they surged clear with a record 21-game winning streak in all competitions by an English top-flight side.

Revitalised by the addition of Portugese international centre-back Ruben Dias and the emergence of England playmaker Phil Foden, City silenced the critics who questioned Pep Guardiola after the Spaniard suffered the worst start to a season in his managerial career.

Regaining the title from Liverpool, while also winning the League Cup and reaching their first Champions League final, suggests City are in position for a period of sustained dominance.

They have few weaknesses but the close-season departure of Sergio Aguero, the club's record goalscorer, leaves a void that needs filling.

England striker Harry Kane could be top of Guardiola's shopping list after confirming he wants to leave Tottenham, but his mooted £150 million ($213 million) price tag may convince him to look at the younger and cheaper Borussia Dortmund goal machine Erling Haaland.

<h2>Manchester United</h2>

United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer survived some rocky spells to establish his side as genuine title contenders heading into next season.

Solskjaer led United to a second place finish -- 12 points behind City -- and the Norwegian has a chance to win the first trophy of his reign in the Europa League final against Villarreal on Wednesday.

Portugal star Bruno Fernandes has been the catalyst, providing on-field inspiration and dressing room leadership in equal measure, a stark contrast to the gifted but temperamental Paul Pogba.

Marcus Rashford and Mason Greenwood were potent in patches and keeping Edinson Cavani was a wise move, but Kane has also been linked with a move to Old Trafford with Solskjaer needing a world-class striker in his prime to really worry City.

Jadon Sancho and Jack Grealish are also reportedly targets to add extra creativity and goals from the wide areas.

But bigger questions remain in defence with Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof not always convincing at centre-back, while Dean Henderson and David De Gea battle to be number one goalkeeper.

<h2>Liverpool</h2>

Hamstrung by a seemingly endless injury list that deprived them of key leaders Virgil van Dijk and Jordan Henderson for most of the season, Liverpool finished outside the top two for the first time in three years.

Jurgen Klopp's often tetchy demeanour reflected the stress of an arduous campaign as Liverpool failed to build on last season's first English title in 30 years.

But a strong run of eight wins in their last 10 league games earned a third-place finish, providing optimism for next term.

Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino and Trent Alexander-Arnold must improve on patchy individual campaigns, with Mohamed Salah's future also up for debate after his flirtation with Real Madrid.

While Liverpool have work to do if they are to regain their position as the Premier League's preeminent force, the return of Van Dijk, Henderson and Joe Gomez next season will be a significant boost to their title hopes.

<h2>Chelsea</h2>

When Frank Lampard was sacked in January, Chelsea were languishing in ninth place as a troubled season threatened to spiral out of control.

However, the decision to hire Thomas Tuchel as Lampard's replacement proved inspired and the German has fourth-placed Chelsea nicely positioned to push on next season.

Aided by Mason Mount's superb form, Tuchel has taken Chelsea to the Champions League final for the first time since 2012, with Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid unable to solve the tactical tweaks that made the Blues solid in defence and deadly on the counter-attack.

Having healed the fractures in a squad divided by Lampard's methods, Tuchel has already masterminded two victories over City and one against Liverpool.

To truly turn Chelsea into a force, the former Paris Saint Germain boss must solve the problems posed by the erratic form of expensive signings Timo Werner, Kai Havertz and Hakim Ziyech.

Liverpool midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum's contract ends this season and though Klopp said he had no update on a possible extension, he did not question the Dutchman's commitment. "Gini's character is without question, a sensational guy, completely committed to the club and the team until the last day," Klopp said.

Football: Jurgen Klopp counting on experience of final day stress to seal top-four spot

Tottenham Hotspur's European hopes were dealt a huge blow as their final Premier League home game of the season ended in a 2-1 defeat by Aston Villa on Wednesday and striker Harry Kane perhaps waving a farewell to the club's fans.

England captain Kane's uncertain future has left Spurs fans wearing a frown in the past week and their mood was hardly raised as a horrible own goal by Sergio Reguilon and an Ollie Watkins strike earned Villa the win.

Defeat left Tottenham in seventh place with 59 points, the same as Everton, after West Ham United moved to 62 by beating West Bromwich Albion later.

Tottenham now face the ignominious prospect of being in the inaugural version of UEFA's third-tier Europa Conference League next season at best, having reached the Champions League final in 2019.

Defeat at Leicester City in their final game on Sunday could even see them finish as low as ninth and facing the prospect of no European football at all next season.

Kane, who has scored 220 goals from 335 in all competitions for Tottenham, including 22 this season in the Premier League, was a subdued figure on Wednesday and forced only one save from Villa's Emiliano Martinez.

After the final whistle, a glum-looking Kane walked slowly around each side of the pitch on his own, receiving warm applause from fans, a few of whom waved goodbye.

Tottenham's fans had sung "we want Levy out" during the game, aimed at the club's chairman Daniel Levy who admitted in a message to fans in the match programme that the club had "lost sight" of key priorities.

FINAL WHISTLE

They continued anti-Levy chants after the final whistle with fans refusing to leave and some scuffling with stewards as they waited for the players to re-appear for a lap of honour.

Interim manager Ryan Mason, who took over from sacked Jose Mourinho last month, summed up the mood.

"I'm very disappointed. It wasn't how we wanted to finish the season at home in front of our fans," Mason said.

"There are so many emotions in football. Yes a lot has been going on but our aim is to get results on the pitch and unfortunately we didn't do that."

The match proved a microcosm of Tottenham's season in which they led the Premier League standings in December.

When Steven Bergwijn seized on a Villa mistake to unleash a fierce shot into the roof of the net after eight minutes the mood was briefly buoyant among the 10,000 fans back inside the stadium for the first time this year.

But the optimism was an illusion.

After 20 minutes Reguilon was faced with a routine clearance but got in a terrible tangle and sliced spectacularly past his diving keeper Hugo Lloris.

Reguilon's night went from bad to worse when his loose pass after 39 minutes was deflected into the path of Watkins who shrugged off Eric Dier before firing inside the post.

Tottenham's confidence drained away and mistakes by Harry Winks and Dier should have been punished.

The hosts were booed off at halftime and things did not improve after the break. Bergwijn and Kane had chances and Gareth Bale came off the bench for what was probably his Tottenham farewell to try and liven things up.

But Villa spurned numerous chances to increase their lead, substitute Carney Chukwuemeka hitting the post in stoppage time, and as the whistle blew, more boos rang around the huge stadium.

"It's an emotional game. Our fans care. I care, so I've no problem with fans being disappointed," Mason said.

Football: Villa loss deepens Tottenham gloom with Kane future in the balance

Liverpool defender Nathaniel Phillips said Wednesday's 3-0 win at Burnley is a massive result for their top-four hopes but the pressure is still ongoing into the final day of the Premier League campaign.

Goals from Phillips, Roberto Firmino and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain secured a fourth straight win for Liverpool and moved them to fourth on 66 points, ahead of fifth-placed Leicester on goal difference.

Liverpool face Crystal Palace at Anfield on Sunday knowing a win will probably secure Champions League football next season. Chelsea, a point ahead in third, are at Aston Villa while Leicester host Tottenham Hotspur.

"It's massive," Phillips, who scored his first Liverpool goal and helped them keep a clean sheet by clearing a Ben Mee header off the line, told Sky Sports. "Most importantly, (we're) up into fourth – that was our goal coming here today.

"All the rest of it are just added bonuses. At this point in the season, with what we're trying to achieve, it doesn't matter how we win games; as long as we get the three points, that's all that matters.

"The pressure is on, there's no room for inconsistency or being lax with our performances."

Phillips said knowing Liverpool have their destiny in their own hands makes little difference going into the final day.

"Not much, because all we can do is concentrate on our games and make sure we win. We know that if we win the next game, as long as Leicester don't go on to score a load of goals in theirs, our job has been done," he said.

"But you never go into a game thinking, 'If we draw we're alright.' You go into every game wanting to win."

Chelsea's final league game under Frank Lampard was a 2-0 defeat away to Leicester in January that opened up a nine-point gap between the sides.

Roared on by the biggest crowd at Stamford Bridge for 14 months, Chelsea exploded out the blocks with Leicester barely able to get out their own half in the first 45 minutes.

However, a combination of goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel and controversial refereeing kept the hosts at bay until the break.

Timo Werner had two goals disallowed in the first half as the German international was firstly flagged offside before his second effort was ruled out by a VAR review for handball.

With millions on the line for a place in the Champions League, that decision could have proved very costly for Chelsea.

But there was little doubt about the outcome once Rudiger bundled home a corner two minutes into the second half.

Werner finally got a VAR call to go his way to double Chelsea's lead 24 minutes from time.

Wesley Fofana's foul on Werner was initially given as a free-kick outside the box, but on review referee Mike Dean was told to point to the penalty spot.

Jorginho coolly sent Schmeichel the wrong way and for 10 minutes, Chelsea looked to be cruising.

However, Leicester set up a nervy finale when Wilfred Ndidi robbed Mateo Kovacic and teed up Iheanacho to slot home his 19th goal of the season.

The Nigerian also became the first player to score on all seven days of the week in a single Premier League season.

Leicester had a glorious chance to salvage a point and keep their top-four fate in their own hands in the final minute, but Ayoze Perez blasted over from Ricardo Pereira's cut-back.

Tempers flared in stoppage time with both sets of players, substitutes and coaches involved in an altercation after Rudiger took exception to a challenge from Pereira on Ben Chilwell.

Chelsea gain revenge on Leicester to take control of top-four fate

Leicester have little time to bask in the glory of winning the FA Cup for the first time as they face Chelsea again on Tuesday in a Premier League clash of huge significance for who makes next season's Champions League.

The Foxes are in pole position to join the already-qualified Manchester City and Manchester United in Europe's premier club competition as they sit third in the table with two games to go.

However, Chelsea and Liverpool know victories in their final two games will likely be enough for both to move above Brendan Rodgers's men into the top four.

Leicester lead the Blues by two points and are three clear of Liverpool, but face the toughest run-in with Tottenham to come on Sunday after their trip to Stamford Bridge.

"We knew we didn't have any favours in the fixtures," said Rodgers on Monday.

"Everything is still in our hands. The players have been absolutely brilliant up until this point. We've got European football, we've got two games now to arrive into the top four."

Despite the disappointment of missing out on his first trophy in English football, Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel did not shy away from suggestions that Tuesday's clash is more important than the cup final in the context his side's season.

"When I stepped into this club the task was let's try everything to be in the top four, not let's try everything to win the FA Cup," said Tuchel.

"Because the FA Cup, as big as it is, does not bring you to Champions League football next season. It's top four that brings us there. Tomorrow is another huge game."

Chelsea's strength in depth could prove vital given the quick turnaround from Wembley's energy sapping clash in front of 22,000 fans.

Tuchel's men were the dominant side on Saturday after he introduced Kai Havertz, Callum Hudson-Odoi, Ben Chilwell, Christian Pulisic and Olivier Giroud off the bench in the second-half and the German is likely to make a number of changes.

Liverpool have on paper the easiest run in of the Champions League contenders as they visit Burnley on Wednesday and host Crystal Palace on Sunday.

However, the Reds needed a stunning stoppage time winner from goalkeeper Alisson Becker to see off already-relegated West Brom on Sunday.

"We still need six points to be in the Champions League and then we can maybe sit back with a bit of satisfaction," said Liverpool left-back Andy Robertson.

<h2>- Fans finally return -</h2>

Doors will be open to fans in the Premier League for the first time in 2021 for all 10 games over Tuesday and Wednesday.

Up to 10,000 supporters can attend or a maximum of 25 percent capacity as coronavirus restrictions across England were eased from Monday.

However, there may well be scenes of protest as well as celebration on their return.

Three of the Premier League six involved in the failed European Super League project -- Manchester United, Tottenham and Chelsea -- are at home this midweek.

The biggest protest is expected for United's clash with Fulham as supporters continue to vent their anger at the club's American owners, the Glazer family.

Liverpool's visit to Old Trafford on May 2 was postponed after supporters stormed the pitch, while more protests took place ahead of that fixture when it did take place last week.

"We've been waiting for a long, long time to welcome the fans back," said United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

"It's never nice to see a club that is not united, fans with the team, so we're hoping that Tuesday is going to be a positive day that we move together."

Football: Chelsea eye Leicester revenge with Champions League riches at stake

Tottenham striker Harry Kane has told the club he wants to leave at the end of the season, according to reports on Monday.

Kane is unhappy at Tottenham's lack of progress this season and is willing to leave after 12 years with the north London side, according to Sky Sports.

The England captain reportedly wants his future resolved before the delayed Euro 2020 starts on June 11.

Kane's contract with Tottenham has another three years to run and chairman Daniel Levy is known to be a tough negotiator, which could ruin the 27-year-old's hopes of a quick resolution.

Tottenham refused to be drawn into debating Kane's future in public as they focus on their final two Premier League games, with Europa League qualification in their sights.

"We won't be commenting - our focus is on finishing the season as strongly as possible. That's what everyone should be focused on," a club spokesman said.

Premier League champions Manchester City, Manchester United and Champions League finalists Chelsea have all been mooted as likely suitors for Kane, who has scored 32 goals in all competitions this term.

Paris Saint-Germain, managed by Kane's former Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino, and Spanish giants Real Madrid have also been linked with the striker.

Kane, a product of the club's youth academy, has scored 220 goals in 334 total appearances for Tottenham, establishing himself as one of the world's best forwards.

But he sparked speculation about a potential move earlier this season when he said it was "hard" to talk about his future.

He has regularly spoken about his desire to win trophies, but is yet to land one with Tottenham, who are without major silverware since the 2008 League Cup.

During Kane's time in Spurs' first team, they have lost in the 2019 Champions League final against Liverpool and been beaten in two League Cup finals, including this season's against Manchester City

Tottenham are currently without a permanent manager following Jose Mourinho's dismissal last month.

With caretaker boss Ryan Mason in charge, Tottenham will qualify for the Europa League if they win their final two games of the Premier League season.

Football: 'Unhappy' Harry Kane wants to leave Spurs - reports

Tottenham Hotspur icon Harry Kane has not mentioned anything about wishing to leave the Premier League side, said caretaker manager Ryan Mason on Tuesday.

Mason was responding to questions over media reports on Monday that Kane's patience had finally broken at the lack of silverware and he wanted to move to a more competitive club.

Mason was adamant at his press conference on the eve of their penultimate league game with Aston Villa that the topic had not been raised by Kane.

Kane and Mason go back a long way having been team-mates at Spurs till 2016 when the latter left.&nbsp;

"No, not that I'm aware of," said Mason when questioned whether Kane has asked to leave.

"All of my conversations with Harry have been about the game. All these conversations, I am not so sure. I don't know.

"I speak to Harry pretty much every day.

"He's excited along with me about (Wednesday's game against Aston Villa). Our only discussions have been about the game tomorrow. We're looking forward to tomorrow."

Mason confirmed that Kane, who is in contention for a third Premier League Golden Boot, will start against Villa on Wednesday in front of 10,000 home fans.

"He starts tomorrow because he is our best striker and he is one of the best strikers in the world," Mason said.

"I have been consistent, I am here for the next two games and that is my main focus in preparing a football team and winning a game of football.

"Hopefully we can do that and Harry can get on the scoresheet.

"They'll love seeing him play. He loves the club, he's been here from a very young age, come through the system.

"I'm sure the fans are excited to see Harry play."

But he sparked speculation about a potential move earlier this season when he said it was "hard" to talk about his future.

He has regularly spoken about his desire to win trophies, but is yet to land one with Tottenham, who are without major silverware since the 2008 League Cup.

During Kane's time in Spurs' first team, they have lost in the 2019 Champions League final against Liverpool and been beaten in two League Cup finals, including this season's against Manchester City.

Mason was adamant at his press conference on the eve of their penultimate league game with Aston Villa that the topic had not been raised by Kane. Kane and Mason go back a long way having been team-mates at Spurs till 2016 when the latter left. We're looking forward to tomorrow." Mason confirmed that Kane, who is in contention for a third Premier League Golden Boot, will start against Villa on Wednesday in front of 10,000 home fans. "I'm sure the fans are excited to see Harry play." Premier League champions Manchester City, Manchester United and Champions League finalists Chelsea have all been mooted as likely suitors for Kane, who has scored 32 goals in all competitions this term. Crystal Palace manager Roy Hodgson will leave the club at the end of the season after deciding to step down from top-flight&nbsp;football, the 73-year-old confirmed on Wednesday.

The much-traveled Hodgson joined Palace in September 2017 and has kept them in the Premier League for four seasons in a row. His assistant, Ray Lewington, is also leaving, Palace said.

Hodgson's final game in charge will be against Liverpool, one of his former clubs, at Anfield on Sunday.

"After more than 45 years of coaching I have decided that the time is right for me to step away from the rigors of top-flight Premier League&nbsp;football," Hodgson said.

"It's been a particularly rewarding period of my&nbsp;football&nbsp;life and career to have been able to spend these last four seasons with Palace.

"I feel now that at the end of another successful season, in which we have secured our Premier League status, the moment is right for me to step down from my responsibilities of being a full-time manager."

Hodgson's coaching career began in 1976 in Sweden and he went on to manage the likes of Inter Milan, Malmo, Blackburn Rovers, Liverpool, West Bromwich Albion, Fulham, the Swiss national team, and England.

He took England to the Euro 2012 Championship and the 2014 World Cup finals but left after his side were knocked out of Euro 2016 by Iceland.

While Hodgson has won no silverware in England he took Fulham to the Europa League final in 2010.

He commands huge respect in the game with Palace chairman Steve Parish paying tribute.

"It has been an absolute privilege and pleasure to work alongside Roy, who is both a magnificent human and an outstanding&nbsp;football&nbsp;manager," he said.

"His record with us simply cannot be overstated, he is the only Palace manager to secure four years in the Premier League and he has helped give us stability in the most turbulent of times. We'll be forever grateful for his immense contribution."

Hodgson's last home game in charge of his boyhood club will be on Wednesday when 6,500 Palace fans will be allowed in to say a fond farewell to one of the game's greatest servants.

While saying he is stepping away from top-flight&nbsp;football, Hodgson did not rule out remaining in the game.

"I have had so much support from my wife and family throughout my career and I have been contemplating this decision for some time, and now I believe the time is right to consider them and to see what the future holds for me," he said.

The 42-year-old former Chelsea boss Frank Lampard is one of the early favorites to be named as Hodgson's successor.

Tottenham were more comfortable 2-0 winners over Wolves to move into pole position for a place in the Europa League, but Everton's hopes of European football were dealt a massive blow by Sheffield United's shock 1-0 victory at Goodison Park.

Alisson's perfectly executed header keeps&nbsp;Liverpool's top-four fate in their own hands despite sitting fifth in the table.

Jurgen Klopp's men trail fourth-placed Chelsea by one point and Leicester by three, with two league games left to play.

But with Leicester and Chelsea still to face off in a repeat of the FA Cup final, which the Foxes won 1-0 on Saturday, victories over Burnley and Crystal Palace will take&nbsp;Liverpool&nbsp;into the top four.

The already-relegated Baggies took an early lead through Hal Robson-Kanu before the in-form Mohamed Salah equalised before half-time.

<h2>'God put his hand on my head'&nbsp;</h2>

But&nbsp;Liverpool&nbsp;were still heading for a damaging draw when Alisson headed in from a corner in the fifth minute of stoppage-time.

The Brazilian's father died in February when he drowned in a swimming accident.

Alisson could not even return home for the funeral at the time due to quarantine rules on foreign travel and was visibly emotional at full-time.

"I played since I remember as a human being with my father. I hope he was here to see it but I'm sure that he's seeing with God on his side and celebrating," said Alisson.

"You can't explain a lot of things in life. For me, the only reason for those kind of things is God and he put his hand on my head today and I'm feeling really blessed."

Liverpool&nbsp;were stunned when Robson-Kanu, making his first league start of the season for Albion, put the hosts ahead in the 15th minute after he ran onto Matheus Pereira's pass and found the bottom corner at the Hawthorns.

Liverpool&nbsp;levelled when Sadio Mane, starting in place of the injured Diogo Jota, intercepted a loose pass to Kyle Bartley, with the ball then falling to Salah, who hit a first-time shot into the bottom left corner.

The Egyptian's 22nd Premier League goal of the season drew him level with Harry Kane in the race for the English top-flight's golden boot award.

<h2>Kane on target&nbsp;</h2>

Kane was also on target as Spurs edged ahead of West Ham into sixth on goal difference.

The England captain fired Tottenham ahead on the stroke of half-time,curling the ball into the corner of the net after Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg's through ball behind the defence.

Hojbjerg made it 2-0 just after the hour when he followed up as Gareth Bale's shot was parried by Rui Patricio as Spurs bolstered their hopes of at least playing Europa League football next season.

Everton's miserable home record has ended their chances of Champions League football as bottom-of-the-table Sheffield United became the latest side to win at Goodison.

The Blades scored the only goal after just seven minutes when 17-year-old Daniel Jebbison tapped home Jack Robinson's cross.

The Toffees have won just once at home since December and remain in eighth, three points behind Tottenham and West Ham in the battle for a Europa League place.

Leicester's FA Cup triumph means seventh place will also be good enough for a place in the new Europa Conference League next season.

Earlier, Crystal Palace twice came from behind to beat Aston Villa 3-2, with Tyrick Mitchell's first goal for the club sealing victory six minutes from time.&nbsp;

John McGinn and Anwar El Ghazi were on target for Villa before the break.

Christian Benteke and Wilfried Zaha twice levelled before Mitchell completed the comeback to lift Palace into 13th.

Goalkeeper to goalscorer as Alisson rescues Liverpool, Tottenham up to sixth

Tottenham Hotspur interim manager Ryan Mason is reluctant to single out players for praise but said the performance of midfielder Dele Alli in Sunday`s 2-0 Premier League win over Wolverhampton Wanderers deserved special mention.

Alli, often overlooked by former manager Jose Mourinho but who has started the last three games under Mason, showcased his attacking skills and tricks as well as getting stuck in with defensive duties to help Spurs climb to sixth in the Premier League.

The 25-year-old will likely have made a good impression on England coach Gareth Southgate, who was among those watching at the stadium as he looks to put his squad together for the European Championship.

"I can`t speak in terms of what Gareth is thinking," Mason said of Alli.

"But for me, Dele was excellent. I don`t really like singling out players but it`s hard not to.

"He ran, he pressed, he created opportunities. I`m sure he`s disappointed he didn`t get a goal himself but it was an excellent No. 10 performance so I`m really pleased."

Sixth place should be enough to qualify for the Europa League next season, though Spurs are level on 59 points with West Ham United with two games left.

Spurs boss Mason praises 'excellent' Alli after Wolves win

Gurpreet Singh Sandhu is super excited, and it’s all for Allison Becker. And the lanky Indian custodian doesn’t mind doing a Becker sometime soon.

Allison Becker, the Liverpool FC goalkeeper came off his line to head home the match-winner against West Bromwich Albion, the 2-1 victory keeping Liverpool’s chances of making it to the UEFA Champions League alive.

“I just can’t stop watching his header again, and again. Maybe it just happened – the ball fell in place and out of pure commitment he glided the ball – and what a header! But if he is doing that regularly in practice, then we have to admit that he is extra special,” Gurpreet told AIFF.&nbsp;

So does Gurpreet want to emulate Allison?

“Not that I am desperate to do it, and I hope that I don’t have to do it ever. Obviously, there have been quite a few times that I have gone up for my club Bengaluru FC, and also during my stint with previous clubs,” he mentioned.

“But if the team requires it as per the situation, who knows? But I would rather leave it to Sunil Chhetri. He is much better at it than me. I have to work on me attacking the ball, and on my heading. But I don’t mind it,” the Indian goalkeeper added.

Allison’s goal was the first Premier League goal of the season by a goalkeeper. In his 128 competitive matches for Liverpool, the Brazilian goalkeeper had just one touch inside the opposition box and that turned into a goal. Of the six goalkeepers to have scored a goal in Premier League history, Alisson was the first to find the net with a headed finish.

Alisson was the scorer of Liverpool's 38th winning goal in the 90th minute of a Premier League game; 13 more than any other team in the competition's history.

The first instructions which I received were to kick the ball back to where it came from. City twice fought back from a goal down and extended the gap at the top of the table to 13 points. That was City's 12th consecutive victory in an away league game - a record in English football.

Torres, who signed from La Liga club Valencia for 20 million pounds ($28.20 million) last August, scored once in the first half of the game and twice in the second, taking his total goal tally for City this season to 13.

"He was fantastic all season and an incredible signing for us," Guardiola said of the 21-year-old. "He's a young player and can play in three positions up front.

"He can make incredible runs in behind but maybe we have to start to think about if he can play as a striker because every time he plays in that position he has a sense for goal, a real sense for goal."

Torres said he is happy with his performance in his first season in England.

"It's been a season of learning for me, the Premier League is a very different competition from what I was used to, it’s very physical," he said.

"But I think I have adapted very well and I keep improving every day."

Sadio Mane was noticeably disappointed after the full-time whistle at Old Trafford on Thursday. Notwithstanding the Reds guaranteeing a 4-2 triumph over Manchester United, Sadio Mane wouldn't shake Jurgen Klopp's hand after the game.&nbsp;

Jurgen Klopp has made light of Sadio Mane's response and uncovered that the player's activities were because of an absence of clarification with regards to why he was precluded from the beginning XI.&nbsp;

"Yes, I made a late decision in training, really late, and changed Diogo for Sadio. And the players are used to that, I explain that. But I didn't do that properly or whatever. And at that moment, for a Premier League game, Sadio was obviously not too happy, that is all. The boys are used to me explaining but there was no time for that, that's the situation."

Sadio Mane has cut a baffling figure this season. The 29-year-old has scored 40 goals in 71 appearances in all rivalries for Liverpool in the last two seasons. Nonetheless, he has figured out how to track down the rear of the net only multiple times in 31 Premier League appearances for Liverpool in the current mission.&nbsp;

Liverpool supervisor Jurgen Klopp has liked to play Diogo Jota in front of Sadio Mane lately as is supposed to be quick to support the group's assault. Sadio Mane could, accordingly, be offered to raise assets for another signing.

Klopp's side were&nbsp;clinical against Manchester United and the success implies they are back in conflict for a Champions League place. "We are still in the game, in the race. That is all we could have done tonight. It is very intense," said Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp in his post-match conference: We have to recover quickly and go again. We played a good game and did good enough to win so, obviously, we did a lot of things right tonight."

Liverpool's three leftover matches are altogether should dominate matches. They will possibly have themselves to fault on the off chance that they blow away a chance to get Champions League football for next season.

Sadio Mane refused to shake hands with Jurgen Klopp amidst the victory

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has played down talk of a summer spending spree in a bid to revive the Anfield club's fortunes.

The German boss believes it will be a relatively quiet transfer window despite speculation linking Erling Haaland, Kylian Mbappe and Jadon Sancho with big-money moves.&nbsp;

But, with clubs across Europe still counting the cost of the coronavirus pandemic on their finances as a result of having to play behind closed doors, the continent's leading teams have a lot less spending money than in previous years.&nbsp;

Liverpool's finances could be stretched even further if the Merseysiders fail to qualify for the Champions League, with Klopp adamant he will not spend heavily after his side ceded the Premier League title to Manchester City.

Klopp believes many teams won't move into the transfer window until after Euro 2022, saying: "The market will be really strange.&nbsp;

"I hear about really big money moves... is Kylian Mbappe going? Haaland? Sancho? I don't see that happening a lot this summer because the football world is still not in the same place it was before.

"We will see how the market will develop but for sure it won't be an early market."

<h2>- 'Beat the best team in the world' -</h2>

Klopp, pointing out Liverpool had won the Champions League and Premier League during his time at Anfield, said: "I never look at other clubs and think 'They can do this, so we can't do that'.

"I am not interested in being the coach of the best team in the world, I am interested in being the coach of the team who can beat the best team in the world."

And he said a fully-fit Liverpool squad could still challenge City, Chelsea and Thursday's opponents Manchester United, with Reds boss looking forward to seeing Virgil Van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip, as well as captain Jordan Henderson, returning to pre-season training.

"Getting the (injured) players back makes us better, definitely. These are our first transfers," he said.

Meanwhile Klopp said it was a "crime" to make United play three games in five days.

United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer made 10 changes ahead of his side's 2-1 home defeat by Leicester on Tuesday, which confirmed Manchester City as champions.

But the result also gave the Foxes, now in third, a nine-point advantage over deposed champions Liverpool, who are scrambling to qualify for next season's Champions League.

Liverpool, who have two games in hand over Leicester, are seven points adrift of fourth-placed Chelsea, having played a game fewer.

United's congested schedule came about following the postponement of their clash with Liverpool earlier this month as a result of protests at Old Trafford against US owners the Glazers.

"To play Sunday-Tuesday-Thursday is a crime," said Klopp. "It is. But it is not the fault of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and the players."

He added: "If we don't qualify for the Champions League it is not the fault of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and his team selection or the Premier League, it is our fault."

Klopp wary of Liverpool summer spending spree

Thomas Tuchel said Chelsea face a "big fight" to finish in the Premier League's top four after their damaging 1-0 defeat against Arsenal on Wednesday.

Tuchel's side missed a chance to climb above Leicester into third place as Emile Smith Rowe bagged the first half winner at Stamford Bridge.

Smith Rowe punished a wayward back-pass from Jorginho to leave Tuchel anticipating a tense finish in the race to qualify for next season's Champions League.

Fourth placed Chelsea are six points ahead of fifth placed West Ham, who have a game in hand, and seven in front of sixth placed Liverpool, who have two games in hand.

Chelsea have two league matches remaining against Leicester and Aston Villa and Tuchel said: "It was always a big fight, it never felt like a relief.

"If anybody felt it like this today, maybe, it's the last lesson to learn.

"It's still in our hands. It is another chance missed. We have had some good results, so we have to cope now with a loss."

Tuchel conceded he was to blame for Chelsea's first defeat in eight games in all competitions after he made seven changes from Saturday's win at Manchester City.

"Maybe I gave some signals to the team with changes that Saturday is on my mind," Tuchel said in reference this weekend's FA Cup final against Leicester.

"Even if it's one per cent or five per cent, this is not how we approach things, because you get punished. It's hard to swallow, hard to accept, but there's no other way."

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta admitted the Gunners' first Stamford Bridge win in a decade was much-needed after a difficult period.

Arteta has been under-fire during a troubled campaign, but he insisted his side have not given up hope of qualifying for Europe next term.

They could make the new Europa Conference League and have an outside chance of reaching the Europa League.

"Nothing is broken inside. I don't know how they want to try from the outside. They (the media) try to put things on me that I never said," Arteta said.

"I said if I don't get 120 percent off each player it's my fault and responsibility. It wasn't like this in the press. I'm so annoyed by that.

"They can try but they're not going to break it. The players showed how much they mean it, how much spirit and attitude there is in the group, and how much they care about it.

"It was a big message. Europe is still mathematically possible, so we have to keep giving ourselves the last chance while it's possible."

Tuchel ready for 'big fight' as Chelsea suffer top four blow

Pep Guardiola has paid tribute to Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp for inspiring him to become a better manager following Manchester City's Premier League title success.

City were crowned champions for the third time in four seasons on Tuesday when Manchester United lost to Leicester, succeeding Klopp's Liverpool.

Klopp described Guardiola as the best manager in the world at a press conference on Wednesday and the Catalan was full of compliments in return.

"Jurgen, of course, was an inspiration for me," said Guardiola. "He made me, through his teams at Dortmund and Liverpool, a better manager. He made me think a lot about games and opponents. Thank you so much."

Guardiola revealed he and his players celebrated with pizza at an impromptu party at their training complex after defeat for second-placed United.

"It was so nice," he said. "The unexpected parties are the nicest ones.

"We came here in our bubble. We drank a bit, we danced, we hugged a lot, we remembered how good it was. Then at 11:30 15 pizzas arrived and that was the best moment of the night."

City's success this season, which also includes their run to the Champions League final and a League Cup triumph, has come after Guardiola signed a new contract in November.

The Spaniard, who arrived at the club in 2016, had been in the final year of his previous deal but he said he wanted to repay the faith shown in him by chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak.

He said: "I cannot forget my first season here, when we didn't win anything, the behaviour of my chairman. And after the big disappointment against Lyon last season (defeat in the Champions League quarter-finals), the support I had from my chairman.

"That's why he is part of our success and it's dedicated to him, for supporting me, like I support my backroom staff and the players.

"Now we have two weeks ahead of us to prepare for the dream come true of playing in the final of the Champions League."

Guardiola hails 'inspirational' Klopp as he savours Premier League triumph

'CHAMPIONS': Manchester City fans take to streets after Premier League win

Manager Pep Guardiola hailed "relentless"&nbsp;Manchester&nbsp;City&nbsp;after they clinched the "hardest" of his three Premier League titles on Tuesday, sparking wild celebrations among supporters who had gathered outside the Etihad Stadium.

City&nbsp;were handed the title when arch-rivals and nearest challengers&nbsp;Manchester&nbsp;United lost 2-1 at home to Leicester, leaving Guardiola's side 10 points clear with three games remaining.

"This has been a season and a Premier League title like no other. This was the hardest one," said Guardiola after&nbsp;City&nbsp;became English champions for the seventh time -- five titles coming in the past nine years.

City&nbsp;missed a chance to celebrate on the pitch at the weekend, losing 2-1 at home to Chelsea with United keeping them waiting by winning at Aston Villa.

But two days later they were able to savour a title triumph that is all the sweeter given the obstacles they have overcome in a coronavirus-condensed campaign played mostly without fans.

"We will always remember this season for the way we won. I am so proud to be the manager here and of this group of players," said Guardiola.&nbsp;

It was&nbsp;City's second trophy in a little over two weeks after beating Tottenham in the League Cup final.

"They are so special. To come through this season, with all the restrictions and difficulties we've faced, and show the consistency we have is remarkable. It is relentless."

With coronavirus restrictions to be eased next week, there will be up to 10,000 fans in the Etihad Stadium to see&nbsp;City&nbsp;lift the trophy after their final home game with Everton on May 23.

In the meantime, hundreds celebrated in the streets outside&nbsp;City's stadium, letting off blue flares, waving banners and joyously chanting.

"It feels amazing, the greatest feeling is winning the Premier League. Better than any other in football. Love it!"&nbsp;City&nbsp;fan Graham Warner told AFP.

The club joined the celebrations by unveiling a giant sky blue banner on the outside of the stadium with the slogan "CHAMPIONS" above a picture of the team celebrating.

Since being taken over by the Abu Dhabi Group in September 2008,&nbsp;City&nbsp;have become the dominant force in English football, winning five Premier League titles, two FA Cups and six League Cups.&nbsp;

This is the third time&nbsp;City&nbsp;have clinched a Premier League and League Cup double, and they also won a domestic treble in 2018/19 by adding the FA Cup.

They can secure another treble later this month, having reached their first Champions League final by beating Paris Saint-Germain in the semi-final last week.

They will face Chelsea on May 29, with the venue likely to be switched from Istanbul to either Portugal or England so some fans can attend.

"Pep Guardiola is the greatest manager in the history of English football. And hopefully we're going to cap it all in a couple of weeks with the big one,"&nbsp;City&nbsp;supporter Charlie Hibber said.

Manchester&nbsp;City&nbsp;captain Fernandinho is now targeting being crowned European champions for the first time.

"We will enjoy this moment and we hope the fans do too," said the Brazilian midfielder.&nbsp;

"Rest assured we will continue to do everything we can to bring the Champions League home this season."

Fernandinho's&nbsp;City&nbsp;team-mates took to social media to celebrate their title triumph.

Alongside a picture of him celebrating with team-mate Rodri, Aymeric Laporte wrote on Twitter: "CHAMPIONNNNES CHAMPIONNNNES OLE OLE OLE."

Kevin De Bruyne posted: "Another One", while Raheem Sterling tweeted: "What's that smell?" before following with: "IT'S THE CHAMPIONS BABYYYY."

Prolific Argentina forward Sergio Aguero, who is leaving at the end of the season after 10 years at the club, wrote: "Champions! Proud of this team! Five #PremierLeague titles with #ManCity."

Leicester and United has been locked 1-1 at Old Trafford until Caglar Soyuncu's towering second-half header ensured&nbsp;City&nbsp;could pop the champagne with three games to spare after an uncharacteristically slow start because of the lack of a proper pre-season.

City&nbsp;won just five of their opening 12 Premier League games but Guardiola masterminded such a superb recovery that the title race became a procession, giving him three Premier League crowns to go with three La Liga trophies with Barcelona and three at Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga.&nbsp;

"At the start of every season, the Premier League is the most important title for us. This is the one where you have to be there every three days, playing all your rivals home and away," Guardiola said.

"Only by being the very best, week in week out, can you win this competition. It is a huge success."

Leicester and United has been locked 1-1 at Old Trafford until Caglar Soyuncu's towering second-half header ensured City could pop the champagne with three games to spare after an uncharacteristically slow start because of the lack of a proper pre-season. City won just five of their opening 12 Premier League games but Guardiola masterminded such a superb recovery that the title race became a procession, giving him three Premier League crowns to go with three La Liga trophies with Barcelona and three at Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga. "At the start of every season, the Premier League is the most important title for us. This is the one where you have to be there every three days, playing all your rivals home and away," Guardiola said. "Only by being the very best, week in week out, can you win this competition. It is a huge success."

'Relentless': Pep hails City after fifth Premier League in nine years

Liverpool coach Jurgen Klopp talked about his players' safety for Thursday's rearranged Premier League game at Manchester United and said that he was not concerned as the original fixture met with violent protests and had to be cancelled.&nbsp;

On May 2, several Manchester United fans broke into Old Trafford demanding change in the club's ownership after the European Super League incident. These protests took place before the high-profile match against arch-rivals Liverpool. Greater Manchester Police has since said that six of its officers were injured during the protest, which ended up postponing the much-awaited match.

"There are no concerns. We trust the authorities, we were not in danger last time," Klopp told a news conference. "I have no idea what happens tomorrow but I am not concerned."

Jurgen Klopp's side is having a rough year, his side is currently sixth on 57 points from 34 games, seven points adrift of fourth-placed Chelsea with a game in hand and are barely in the race for the Champions League spot.&nbsp;

"Our plan was to win all the games," he said. "But do we have to take more risks? Possible but it's not planned. If you play a game and think only about attacking, you have lost before the first whistle."

Klopp talked about Van Dijk, who ruled himself out of the European Championships in order to fully recover for Liverpool.&nbsp;

"I never wanted to cut the Euros off but I always knew with common sense, it was never possible," he added.

Klopp also said captain Jordan Henderson, who has not played since late February after undergoing surgery on a groin injury, could be fit for the Euros.

"I think there's a chance - unfortunately not for us but for England," he said.

'We trust the authorities': Jurgen Klopp on safety concerns over Man Utd fixture

Pep Guardiola's deft introduction of a new generation at Manchester City inspired their latest Premier League title triumph, laying the foundations for a burgeoning dynasty at the Etihad Stadium.

Guardiola's side were crowned English champions for the third time in four seasons after Manchester United were beaten 2-1 by Leicester on Tuesday.

City have sealed the silverware with three games to spare, regaining the trophy they were forced to surrender to Liverpool last season.

Their return to the summit is a tribute to Guardiola's clever reshuffle of a squad that lost several important figures in recent seasons

Vincent Kompany, Yaya Toure and David Silva all left the Etihad Stadium over the last four years after establishing themselves among the most influential players in City history.

Even this season, City's record goalscorer Sergio Aguero has been phased out and will leave in the summer.

But rather than let the departure of the old guard serve as a death knell for City's ambitions, Guardiola has transitioned to a new crop of stars capable of keeping his side on top for years to come.

Ruben Dias, Phil Foden and Joao Cancelo have emerged to play leading roles this season, supplementing core components Kevin De Bruyne, Kyle Walker, Bernardo Silva, Riyad Mahrez and Ederson.

Dias has been the most important addition as the Portugal centre-back proved the perfect replacement for Kompany.

Signed from Benfica in September, the 23-year-old adapted seamlessly to the Premier League, adding physicality and leadership that brought the best out of John Stones at a time when the England defender was in danger of squandering his potential.

England playmaker Foden has long been earmarked as a future star and the 20-year-old is living up to the hype at last after a breakthrough season.

Cancelo's dynamic bursts from right or left back allowed City to out-number opponents in attacking areas, providing Guardiola with a big pay-off for keeping faith with the 26-year-old after an underwhelming first season following his move from Juventus.

Ilkay Gundogan's late flowering at age 30 has been an added bonus for Guardiola as the German midfielder's superb form and glut of goals covered for De Bruyne's various injury problems and a low-key year for Raheem Sterling.

<h2>- Defining moment -</h2>

Most encouragingly for Guardiola, only Walker and Gundogan have hit 30, giving him a group capable of a dynastic reign.

While the changing of the guard is well underway, ironically it was one of City's senior citizens who played a vital part in their revival from an uneven first half of the season.

When City were held to a 1-1 draw by lowly West Bromwich Albion on December 15, Guardiola admitted "I don't like this team, I don't like the way we play."

Days later, the City boss was still brooding and a lethargic training session on New Year's Eve convinced him to call on Brazilian veteran Fernandinho for help.

Fernandinho, 35, has been City's captain this season and Guardiola urged him to tell his team-mates their efforts were not acceptable.

"After that session, Pep came and spoke to me as captain, as the leader of the team. He was blunt. He told me that not everyone was at 100 percent. And, in this team, when you come to train, you do it at 100 percent, or you stay home. There is no negotiation," Fernandinho told the Players' Tribune.

"I arrived at the ground the next morning ahead of training, and I said, 'Tell Pep we'll start training a little later today.' It was an emergency.

"Once we got everyone together, I spoke openly. I spoke as captain. I told them what Pep had told me, that some things are inexcusable. We needed to be shaken."

It was a defining moment as City put Chelsea to the sword in their next match and haven't looked back.

"Our next game was away at Chelsea. Before the match, I thought to myself, 'If these guys don't run here, that's it, I'm done!' I was ready to lose all morale," Fernandinho said.

"But, of course, we won. Thank God, since then we've been on an amazing, record-breaking run."

Ominously for City's title rivals, Fernandinho believes the desire for more success burns as bright as ever in the new generation.

"The most important thing is when you win titles and trophies, you get that hunger to win even more. That's what we have here," he said.

Man City's new generation lay foundation for golden era

The Premier League has welcomed the British government's announcement on the easing of lockdown restrictions amid the COVID-19 pandemic and Chief Executive Richard Masters said on Monday it is their priority to have full stadiums next season.

The government said in February that under the third stage of its four-stage "roadmap", stadiums would - if all conditions are met - from May 17 be allowed to hold up to 50% of their capacity, or 4,000 people, whichever is lower.

A special provision will be made for large outdoor, seated venues, so that they can open their doors to up to 10,000 people or 25% of the capacity, whichever is lower.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson confirmed on Monday the roadmap would progress as planned.

"It'll be brilliant to see fans back. They've been hugely missed and the Premier League hasn't been the same without them. Their presence will ensure a fantastic finale to the end of our season," Masters said.

Matches in England's top-flight have taken place behind closed doors since June, apart from a brief window late last year when small crowds were allowed before a resurgence of COVID-19 cases.

The Premier League said last week attendance for the penultimate round of matches to be played on May 18-19 and the final day May 23 would be restricted to home fans.

"Although only a small number of home fans will be at our matches next week, this is an important step in our return to normality," Masters added.

"We'll continue to work with the government and other authorities as our priority is to have full vibrant stadiums – including away supporters - from the start of next season. Only then will we get back to the real Premier League."

A crowd of 8,000 watched Manchester City beat Tottenham Hotspur in the League Cup final on April 25, while this weekend's FA Cup final is expected to have 21,000 fans present.

Premier League anticipates full stadiums next season

Fulham were relegated from the Premier League with a 2-0 loss at home to Burnley on Monday that assured the Clarets of their top-flight status.

London club Fulham will now join already-demoted West Bromwich Albion and Sheffield United in the second-tier Championship next season.

Fulham had to avoid defeat at Craven Cottage on Monday to maintain their slim hopes of beating the drop.

But first-half goals from Burnley's Ashley Westwood and Chris Wood put paid to their chances of staying up.

Fulham's defeat also meant all three relegation places were decided with at least three games to go, ensuring there would be no last-day drama in the battle to beat the drop.&nbsp;

"It has been looming but it doesn't hide the disappointment, hurt and sadness I feel tonight," Fulham manager Scott Parker told the BBC.&nbsp;

"It's inevitable now. I am gutted.

"Tonight is how the season has gone at times. Between the two boxes we did very well. The difference was defensively the two goals we conceded were poor and in the final moment when you need to score and make good decisions we did not have that."

<h2>- 'Rollercoaster' -</h2>

Monday's reverse meant Fulham went straight back down after a season in the top flight, with Parker adding: "The club needs to make big decisions.&nbsp;

"We've had a relegation, a promotion and a relegation. The rollercoaster of that and the highs and lows is not something you want."

Burnley were sold in February to a US-based consortium and Clarets manager Sean Dyche was proud of the way the Clarets had coped on and off the field during some uncertain times for the northwest side.

"It is important for the club, it is important for the town," he said.&nbsp;

"It's been a real challenging season with the sale of the club.

"There was not a lot of investment from the outgoing owners and we've had a lot of injury problems," he added.

Burnley were twice denied early by Fulham goalkeeper Alphonse Areola, before they went ahead in the 35th minute when Westwood, found at the back post by Matej Vydra, slotted the ball into the net.

The visitors then doubled their lead a minute before the break when Wood let fly with a shot into the top corner.

Areola appeared fortunate to stay on the field in the 67th minute when, after he had raced out his area, the ball appeared to come off the keeper's arm as Vydra tried to go around him.

But there was no VAR intervention, with officials deciding Areola had escaped a red card because the presence of a covering defender meant there had not been a denial of a goalscoring opportunity.

VAR is not empowered to recommend a booking, hence the lack of even a yellow card.

But Fulham's luck ran out at the other end of the pitch in the 70th minute when Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa's shot beat Burnley keeper Nick Pope only to bounce clear off the underside of the bar.

Fulham relegated from Premier League after Burnley loss

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta said the north London club needed changes in the squad to turn their fortunes around after a disappointing season, and added that he was confident the club owners would back him.

Arsenal were knocked out of the second-tier Europa League on Thursday and sit 10th in the Premier League, facing the prospect of no European football for the first time in 25 years.

"The squad needs changing," the Spaniard was quoted as saying in British media before Sunday`s home game against West Bromwich Albion.

"There were already a lot of changes in December, something that has not been done in years, but it tells us where we were. Things are going to have to change and the owners are going to back it up."

Arteta, who guided Arsenal to the FA Cup last season, has come under fire following the team`s poor display but when asked if he believed he could still manage a top side, he said: "Yes."

"We know what has been going on inside here for the last 18 months. We know. We only know, the ones that are here. How we have built that is incredible."

Arsenal, who finished eighth last season, are 14 points behind fourth-placed Leicester City and 31 points behind league leaders Manchester City, with both teams having played a game more than the Londoners.

"Time is catching up right now," Arteta added. "It`s a trend, it`s years now that this has been happening. If the distance and the margins with the rest become too big, then it`s almost impossible to do it."
