Liverpool made it two wins from two at the start of the new Premier League season as they cruised to a 2-0 home victory over Burnley on Saturday.

Diogo Jota edged Liverpool in front with his second goal in as many games in the 18th minute, a brilliant header in front of a first full Anfield in 17 months.

Burnley, the team who last season ended Liverpool`s 68-match unbeaten home league run, a record that stretched back almost four years, had chances to level, but their final ball was lacking at the crucial moment.

Ashley Barnes thought he had levelled early in the second half, only to be denied by the offside flag, with Liverpool capitalising on their reprieve in the 69th minute, as Sadio Mane drilled home their second.

The hosts pressed for a third, urged on by a buoyant crowd, but they settled for two, and a second clean sheet of the campaign, to go top of the standings, and leave Burnley pointless from their opening two matches.

Tuchel, who took over Chelsea midway through last season and led them to a top-four finish, said his team are "fourth favorites" to win the league and must hunt down Manchester City, Manchester United, and Liverpool - last season's top three teams.

"To be totally honest, I see us as the number four, that cannot be the favorite in the next year," he told reporters after Saturday's game.

"This is the Premier League, a tough competition. It's on us, we are in this role, and in the role of the hunters, we have to close the gap to Liverpool, Manchester City, and Manchester United.

Liverpool centre-back Virgil van Dijk said he was excited to return from his "mentally tough" injury layoff as the Netherlands international played Premier League football after nearly 10 months in Saturday's 3-0 win at promoted Norwich City.

Liverpool eased into the new Premier League season as goals by Diogo Jota, Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah earned them a comfortable victory.

The Merseyside club enjoyed a relatively trouble-free evening at Carrow Road with defensive linchpin Van Dijk making his first top-flight appearance after picking up a serious knee injury in last season's Merseyside derby in October.

Football: Liverpool's Virgil Van Dijk relishing Premier League return after 10-month absence

Liverpool manager Juergen Klopp declared that "football is back" after his side opened their Premier League campaign with a 3-0 win over Norwich City at a packed Carrow Road on Saturday.

Klopp's side perhaps suffered more than most during the COVID-19 restrictions which meant their 2019-20 title season, their first since 1990, was concluded in empty stadiums.

While the pandemic is still ongoing, a lifting of restrictions in Britain mean the season has kicked off with traditional atmospheres inside stadiums.

Fans of promoted Norwich were in good voice and although Liverpool rather ruined the party, Klopp said it was a day for all fans to celebrate a return to normality.

"It's great to see the fans back and I hope that Norwich celebrated as well because they had an exceptional season," Klopp said. "The occasion was great. It was exactly what we expected and what we`d missed for so long.

"I applauded the Norwich fans as well because it's so nice to have fans back, wherever they come from. I could see in the eyes of the players they had to get used to it again. Everybody has to get used to the atmosphere.

"It's cool. Football is back."

Goals by Diogo Jota, Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah sealed the points and it was perhaps a good omen for Liverpool that they also beat Norwich on the opening day in 2019.

Klopp's mood was made even more cheery by the sight of key defender Virgil van Dijk coming through the game unscathed after being out injured for nine months.

"After that long time being out and the pre-season he had, being back on the pitch feels different, you could see all his class," Klopp said.

"It was hard for him to go for 90 minutes. we'll see if he has enough time to recover."

For Norwich it was an 11th successive Premier League defeat after they lost their last 10 in 2020.

But manager Daniel Farke said it had been a tough pre-season with several players unavailable.

"Several missed lots of time. We had many players out. The energy was there and we were competitive for 65 minutes," he said. "The second goal made it tricky. But I was pleased we didn't concede more after the three goals."

Farke also praised the fans.

"It is our living room (Carrow Road) and we have a special bond and unity with our supporters. I think they appreciate what we have done. It was great to get this welcome and humbling," the German said.

Football: Chelsea, Manchester United and Liverpool off to flying starts

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has defended the Premier League champions' transfer spending in the wake of the British record signing of midfielder Jack Grealish, saying the club adheres to Financial Fair Play (FFP) rules.

European soccer governing body UEFA's FFP rules were introduced in 2009 to prevent clubs from spending beyond their means and distorting the market, requiring teams to break even and keep wages and transfer fees in line with income.

In July last year, City's two-year suspension from European football was overturned by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) after it ruled that City did not breach FFP rules.

The club's spending has raised questions again after they signed Grealish for 100 million pounds from Aston Villa, but Guardiola said the deal was possible because of 60 million pounds worth of sales by the club over the past 12 months.

"We have limits because of FFP," Guardiola said. "We are on the same page like everyone. After that, each club decides what they want to do.

"Every season we have passed the controls that are there for everyone. If we are wrong, prove it.

"I have said before, there are owners who want the benefits for themselves. Our owners don't want to lose money but if they can spend, they will."

British media have reported City are also ready to pay in excess of 120 million pounds to sign Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane as they look to replace Sergio Aguero, who left City at the end of last season after a decade-long association.

The Gunners have finished eighth in each of his first two seasons in charge and the Spaniard has a daunting task to turn things around before the September international break with title favourites Chelsea and Manchester City to come in Arsenal's next two games.

"I don’t think we deserved anything different," said Arteta in a damming indictment of his side.

Frank whipped up the crowd into a frenzy before kick-off and Arsenal were soon suffering under the relentless pressing his side became famous for in the Championship.

Bryan Mbuemo drilled a shot off the outside of the post in the first warning shot from the home side before they took the lead on 22 minutes.

Ethan Pinnock fed Canos on the Brentford left and he cut inside to unleash a powerful shot that beat Bernd Leno at his near post.

Mbuemo then dragged another huge chance wide after turning Arsenal's new £50 million signing Ben White with ease.

The Gunners were without both Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandra Lacazette due to illness, handing Folarin Balogun his Premier League debut.

Balogun made little impact, but was also unfortunate not to win a penalty as he was caught on the follow through after slicing wide just before half-time.

"A lot of young boys were doing everything they can. For some of them it was the first experience in the league – that says a lot," added Arteta, as he appeared to make a plea for more funds before the end of the transfer window.

"What I can control and help, I'll put all my enthusiasm and work into that."

Arsenal started the second-half with far more purpose as Kieran Tierney and Emile Smith-Rowe finally forced David Raya into action.

Arsenal will not re-evaluate their transfer plans after Friday's Premier League season-opening defeat by Brentford, said manager Mikel Arteta, who insisted he is focussed on improving his current squad.

Arsenal lost 2-0 after Sergi Canos and Christian Norgaard scored a goal each as Brentford celebrated their return to the top-flight after a 74-year absence.

Arsenal were without the attacking duo of Alexandre Lacazette and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang due to illness, but Arteta said the team was good enough to achieve a different result.

"My focus is on the players that we have - to make them play as well as possible and get the best out of the team, finding the way to win football matches," Arteta told reporters after Friday's match, when asked if the defeat creates an urgency to sign new players.

"We are very clear of what we wanted to do, what our strengths are and where we can improve," he said, adding he does not think the "performance shows anything different to what we've already seen."

Arsenal, who finished eighth last season and failed to qualify for European football, have signed defenders Ben White and Nuno Tavares along with midfielder Albert Sambi Lokonga in the summer transfer window but are yet to add fresh attacking firepower.

Arteta said before the game the club was trying to adapt to the demands of "the most difficult transfer market".

Football: Arsenal adapting to 'most difficult' transfer window, says Mikel Arteta

After making two transformative signings in Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane, Manchester United have no excuse for not giving champions Manchester City a proper run for their money in the Premier League title race.

United finally landed England winger Sancho for 73 million pounds ($101 million) in July before making another eye-catching move by signing serial winning defender Raphael Varane from Real Madrid.

Varane should bring much-needed pace and control to a defence that has relied too much on Harry Maguire in the last two seasons while Sancho can light up a powerful attack and share the team's creative responsibility with Bruno Fernandes.

United made another big investment this summer in handing Ole Gunnar Solskjaer a three-year contract and the much-loved former striker must now turn the 20-times English champions back into the force they were before Alex Ferguson retired in 2013.

Champions City, once dismissed by Ferguson as "noisy neighbours", are undoubtedly the biggest force in Manchester now and are clear favourites to retain their crown after adding Jack Grealish to their squad for a league-record 100 million pounds.

Yet Solskjaer has been given more time and money than any of Ferguson's successors and if he cannot sustain a serious title charge, he will face renewed questions about his suitability to coach England's biggest and most successful club.

"Last season was more than acceptable in terms of on the journey but this year they’ve got to get nearer," said former United captain and Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville, who called Varane "the last piece in the jigsaw".

"They’ve got to get close to challenging for the title and that’s going to be really tough."

United, however, will not just face competition from City.

CHELSEA THREAT

Chelsea will pose a serious threat in their first full season under Thomas Tuchel, who transformed a team short on ideas under Frank Lampard into Champions League winners in only four months in charge.

The German proved a wily tactician and turned a team with a soft centre into an ultra-competitive side who conceded only two goals in their first 14 games in all competitions.

He has also solved the problem of striking firepower by signing Belgium's Romelu Lukaku, who scored 64 goals in all competitions in two season with Inter Milan, for 97.5 million pounds.

Liverpool should also be a force to be reckoned with again after last season's limp title defence.

They have their defensive leader Virgil van Dijk back as well as Joe Gomez and the Merseysiders will hope for better luck with injuries in this campaign.

Juergen Klopp has further boosted his team's backline with French centre back Ibrahima Konate in a bid to improve on the 42 goals they shipped last season, their worst defensive record in four years.

Leicester City, meanwhile, will make a third bid to gatecrash the top four after agonisingly missing out on a Champions League berth in the last two seasons while north London rivals Arsenal and Tottenham will also be desperate to return to Europe's elite competition.

The Premier League said on Friday it is funding defibrillators at grassroots clubs and facilities to save lives if someone suffers a cardiac arrest in the wake of Christian Eriksen`s collapse at the European Championship.

The former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder collapsed in Denmark`s group opener against Finland. His life was saved when CPR was administered to him on the pitch and his heart was re-started with a defibrillator before he was taken to hospital.

The league said "more than 2,000 sites will benefit" with the first 1,000 units of Automated External Defibrillators (AED) to be delivered before the 2021-22 season begins.

"The traumatic incident we all witnessed when Christian Eriksen collapsed during Euro 2020 brings into sharp focus the need for defibrillators to be more widely available across the football community," Premier League chief executive Richard Masters said.

"The welfare of participants and all those involved in football is a priority and this fund will support many people using football facilities not just with the provision of devices but also the training required to use the equipment.

"Sadly, a sudden cardiac incident could happen anytime, anywhere and we hope by enabling more facilities to have a device, it will make the difference in saving someone`s life."

Eriksen was discharged from hospital after an operation to implant a heart starter device.

Former Bolton Wanderers midfielder Fabrice Muamba, who collapsed on the pitch in an FA Cup match in 2012 and was technically "dead" for 78 minutes, welcomed the initiative.

"I know from personal experience the importance of having access to this type of medical equipment and how vital it is for someone`s survival after suffering from sudden cardiac arrest," he said.

"Educating people how to use defibrillators is crucial."

Premier League clubs reported a cumulative pre-tax loss of almost £1 billion ($1.4 billion) for the coronavirus-hit 2019-20 season, according to figures from finance company Deloitte.

Fans were locked out of English top-flight stadiums in the latter stages of the 2019-20 campaign because of the pandemic and only returned on a limited basis towards the end of the 2020-21 season.

The lack of spectators combined with a rebate paid to television broadcasters cut revenue by about 13 per cent.

A cumulative pre-tax loss of almost £1 billion was also the largest in Premier League history and almost five times the previous season's £200 million figure.

Although the losses were significant, the 20 Premier League clubs still made a combined £4.5 billion.

"The decrease in revenue in the 2019-20 season is, unsurprisingly, down to the global economic and social disruption caused by the Covid-19 pandemic and will continue to have a heavy impact on the 2020-21 season's financial results when available," Dan Jones of Deloitte's sports business group said.

"The absence of fans, postponement of matches and rebates to broadcasters had a significant impact on the revenue clubs have been able to generate.

"The full financial impact of the pandemic on the Premier League will depend on the timing of the return of fans to stadia in significant numbers and the ability of clubs to maintain and develop their commercial relationships, in particular at a time when many other industries are suffering.

"Matchday operations are a cornerstone of a club's business model and fans' absence will be more fully reflected in the financial results of the 2020-21 financial year.

"Once fans are able to return in full, hopefully during the 2021/22 season, Premier League clubs have the potential to again return to record revenue levels."

The renewal of the league's broadcasting deals will contribute to that, but, in the meantime, the proportion of club revenue that went to paying player wages jumped to 72 per cent in 2019-20.

"With wages always representing the largest cost for football clubs we will watch with interest in years to come to understand whether this financial shock will come to be seen as having caused a change in approach and greater control over wage expenditure," Deloitte's Tim Bridge said.

Chelsea's N'Golo Kante has excused discussions of winning the current year's Ballon d'Or. The French midfielder accepts the discussions of winning the France Football prize are untimely and there is far to go.

N'Golo Kante had a pivotal influence in Chelsea's UEFA Champions League win this season. He was the man of the match in the last and greater part of the knockout stage games, and fans have been revitalizing for him to win the Ballon d'Or this year.

It's not necessary to say today that I deserve it. A few years ago I was in the top 10. It was the first time and it was nice. But winning it is another story."

Dias is the fourth defender to be voted Player of the Season by the public, the captains of the 20 Premier League clubs, and a panel of experts after Manchester United's Nemanja Vidic, former City captain Vincent Kompany and Liverpool's Virgil van Dijk.

His compatriot and former Manchester United forward Ronaldo won the award in 2006-07 and 2007-08.

Other nominees for the award this season included Kevin De Bruyne, Bruno Fernandes, Jack Grealish, Harry Kane, Mason Mount, Mohamed Salah, and Tomas Soucek.

Liverpool and Chelsea seized the final two Champions League places in a dramatic end to the Premier League season on Sunday, leaving Leicester heartbroken for the second consecutive campaign.

With Manchester City already guaranteed a third title in four years and Manchester United certain to finish second, the focus was on the battle for the remaining two places in the top four.

Heading into the 38th and last round of fixtures, just one point separated Chelsea in third place from Leicester in fifth.

Two Sadio Mane goals gave Liverpool a 2-0 win at home to Crystal Palace, while Thomas Tuchel's Chelsea were indebted to a late Leicester collapse against Tottenham at the King Power Stadium.

Chelsea lost 2-1 at Aston Villa but were saved by the 4-2 defeat for Brendan Rodgers' FA Cup winners.

Liverpool had to celebrate the club's first league triumph for 30 years in an empty stadium last season and their Premier League title defence was blown off course by a series of injuries to key players.

But they avoided the financial hit of missing out on Europe's top club competition by finding their form in the final months of the season, winning eight of their last 10 games to finish third.

"Outstanding, best I could've dreamt of -- we wanted this feeling, this game, this atmosphere," Jurgen Klopp told the BBC after the win in front of 10,000 fans.

"Finishing the season in third is incredible, I can't believe it -- credit to the boys. I can't believe how it worked out in the last few weeks, incredible."

Chelsea were on the brink of missing out on a top-four finish, trailing at Villa Park as goals from Bertrand Traore and Anwar El Ghazi put the home side 2-0 up.

Ben Chilwell pulled a goal back, but in the end Chelsea were saved by the Leicester result to finish fourth, meaning they can now focus on next weekend's Champions League final against Manchester City knowing they are in the competition next season.

Tuchel admitted Chelsea had been "lucky" to qualify.

"We had enough chances," he said. "We did not score, conceded two cheap goals and it was a defeat in the end. We are lucky to escape today."

- Leicester pain -

Leicester were left to dwell on another agonising near-miss, just a week after winning the FA Cup for the first time in their history.

The Foxes, forced to settle for a Europa League spot, also missed out on the top four on the final day of last season when they were beaten by Manchester United.

Leicester ended with more days in the Premier League's top four than any other side this season, adding to their sense of frustration.

They appeared to be on the brink of a stunning end to their campaign as two Jamie Vardy penalties saw them lead 2-1 with 16 minutes to go, but a Kasper Schmeichel own goal and two late Gareth Bale strikes completed a turnaround for Spurs.

Harry Kane was also on the scoresheet in potentially his final match for Spurs to win his third Golden Boot award.

The England captain finished one ahead of Liverpool's Mohamed Salah on 23 goals and also picked up the prize for most assists in the season with 14.

"It's hugely disappointing for us," said Rodgers. "We fought so hard all season. I always said you're judged after 38 games and unfortunately we couldn't quite make it."

West Ham secured a Europa League spot by beating Southampton 3-0 while Fulham, West Brom and Sheffield United had already been relegated.

Tottenham finished seventh to take a Europa Conference League spot.

- Aguero signs off in style -

Sergio Aguero scored two goals on his final home appearance for Manchester City in their 5-0 romp against Everton after coming on as a second-half substitute.

Pep Guardiola's side, who finished 12 points ahead of Manchester United, celebrated with the Premier League trophy after the match.

The club also paid tribute to Aguero, whose 184 Premier League goals are the most by any player for a single club.

"When I came here the first title for me was the most important, for the club and for me, then Man City started to win more titles so I'm so happy because it's not easy to be 10 years at one club, for me it's an honour," he told Sky Sports.

I always said you're judged after 38 games and unfortunately we couldn't quite make it." West Ham secured a Europa League spot by beating Southampton 3-0 while Fulham, West Brom and Sheffield United had already been relegated. Tottenham finished seventh to take a Europa Conference League spot. - Aguero signs off in style - Sergio Aguero scored two goals on his final home appearance for Manchester City in their 5-0 romp against Everton after coming on as a second-half substitute.
