<p>Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a grand spectacle on Sunday unveiled the Delhi-Meerut expressway for Capital that will drastically reduce the traffic and pollution.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The BJP has touted the Delhi-Meerut expressway and eastern peripheral expressway as game changers for Delhi’s traffic and pollution and the government is also all set to drive maximum mileage out of it with PM Modi holding a mega road show before throwing open the projects to the public.</p>

<p>PM Modi also inaugurated the Eastern Peripheral Expressway, which is being promoted as India's first green highway.&nbsp;</p>

<p>India’s first smart and green 6-lane highway is impressive for several reasons. For one, it will decongest Delhi-NCR (National Capital Region) and connect crucial areas of Palwal, Gautam Budh Nagar, Faridabad and Ghaziabad. For another, it’s an eco-friendly highway that has been made in a record time of 500 days as against a target of 910 days</p>

<p><strong>Key facts to know about the Eastern Peripheral Expressway:</strong></p>

<p>Built at a cost of Rs 11,000-crore, the 135-km no-signal expressway connects Kundli to Palwal, via Ghaziabad. The roadway is expected to divert much of the vehicular traffic from Delhi-NCR as those commuting from as far as Rajasthan to Himachal Pradesh and vice versa, will not be required to pass through the national capital.</p>

<p>To avoid congestion, the electronic form of payment will be promoted at the toll booths.</p>

<p>The lights across the highway would be powered using solar energy. This is the first expressway in the nation which is using the renewable source of energy to light up the roads.</p>

<p>A total of 50,000 trees have been planted on either side of the highway to tackle the vehicular pollution. Replicas of 25 major monuments, including Lal Quila, Taj Mahal, &nbsp;Jalianwala Bagh, Gateway of India and Qutub Minar, among others, will be installed on either side.</p>

<p>The major parliamentary constituencies which will be connected through the EPE include Kundli, Sonipat, Baghpat, Ghaziabad, Noida, Faridabad and Palwal.</p>

<p><strong>Key facts to know about the Delhi-Meerut Expressway Phase-I:</strong></p>

<p>The first phase of the 101-km expressway stretches for only 9-km -- from Nizamuddin Bridge to UP border. However, it will prove to be critical for reducing the congestion of vehicles passing to and fro from Noida and Ghaziabad.</p>

<p>The expressway is also India's "first-ever 14-lane" highway, which PM Modi has described as "road to freedom from pollution".</p>

<p>The project will be completed in four phases - Nizamuddin Bridge to UP Border, UP Border to Dasna, Dasna to Hapur and Hapur to Meerut.</p>

<p>At its completion, the project will do away with 31 signals between Delhi and Meerut. It will also bring down the time of journey from 2 hours, 31 minutes at present to merely 40 minutes.</p>

<p>The opposition launched a multi-pronged attack on the Narendra Modi-led government on its fourth anniversary today, saying it "failed" to fulfil its promises, had no achievement to highlight, and that the prime minister-BJP president duo was "harmful" for the country.</p>

<p>The Congress described the four years of the BJP government as one of "treachery, trickery, revenge and lies", while the Left parties, the SP and the BSP said all sections of the society suffered due its "failures".</p>

<p>While the Congress described BJP as "Betrayal Janata Party" for failing to deliver on its promises, party chief Rahul Gandhi led the attack by mocking the NDA government's performance and calling Narendra Modi a "master communicator" who struggled with complex issues and had a short attention span.</p>

<p>Taking to Twitter, he gave grades to the BJP-led NDA government in a mock report card of the Prime Minister. While he gave 'F' to the Modi government for agriculture, foreign policy and job creation, he gave 'A+' to the prime minister for 'slogan creation and self-promotion'.</p>

<p>"4 year Report Card. Agriculture: F, Foreign Policy: F, Fuel Prices: F, Job Creation: F, Slogan Creation: A+, Self Promotion: A+, Yoga: B-. Remarks: Master communicator struggles with complex issues short attention span," Mr Gandhi said on Twitter.</p>

<p>Separately at a joint press conference, Congress leaders Ghulam Nabi Azad, Ashok Gehlot and Randeep Surjewala released a booklet, titled 'India Betrayed', to mark the occasion, in which it posed 40 questions and alleged that an atmosphere of fear and hatred had been created under the NDA rule.</p>

<p>The Congress observed "Betrayal Day" to mark four years of the Modi government by organising protests in all district headquarters in the country. The party also released a short-film on the prevailing atmosphere in the country.</p>

<p>"People now know that the Modi-(BJP president) Amit Shah duo is harmful for the country. The four years of the Modi government can be defined in four terms -- treachery, trickery, revenge and lies," AICC communications in-charge Randeep Surjewala said.</p>

<p>He said while the Prime Minister is in perpetual campaign mode, he refuses to understand peoples' pain and he has accumulated publicity but India only accumulated pain.</p>

<p>Referring to alleged atrocities on Dalits, tribals, minorities and women, Leader of the Opposition in Rajya Sabha Ghulam Nabi Azad told reporters, "Under Modi's Government, nobody is safe. Everybody is having sleepless nights including all of you. Whatever you think, you cannot express. Whatever you want to write, you cannot write."</p>

<p>Highlighting the importance of national security, he said PM Modi exploited this "to the hilt" as this was one of the major points which he tried to score during election campaign and got maximum votes on it.</p>

<p>"National security does not mean only territorial integrity of the country. National security means whether we have peace and harmony in the country, but that is least at the moment. National security also means whether downtrodden, minorities, SCs, poor people and have-nots are secure, but they are not," he told reporters.</p>

<p>AICC General Secretary Ashok Gehlot said an "atmosphere of fear, hatred and violence has been created in the last four years of the Modi government".</p>

<p>"There has never been such betrayal with the people. One has never had such a prime minister in the history of the country, who has lowered the dignity of the office he holds. He speaks lies all the time and misleads people," he alleged.</p>

<p>BSP chief Mayawati slammed the Modi government for its historic failure on dealing with issues concerning the common man.</p>

<p>"The four years of Narendra Modi government prove that it has historically failed on the issues of inflation, poverty, unemployment, welfare work and other issues which affect the life of the people in the country," Ms Mayawati said, as she accused the government of misusing official machinery to weaken opposition parties.</p>

<p>Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav hit out at the Modi government, alleging that the poor, Dalits and women suffered in the last four years.</p>

<p>Taking to Twitter, the former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister raised the issue of bank frauds and alleged that the corrupt were allowed to flee the country. He said farmers, businessmen and unemployed masses were reeling from the decisions of the Modi government.</p>

<p>The Left claimed that the BJP government had nothing to show for its four years at the Centre except "failures and rhetoric" and should be ousted from power.</p>

<p>The CPI (M) alleged that these four years had seen an "unprecedented assault" on India's social fabric and the livelihood of the people.</p>

<p>"These four years have seen an unprecedented assault on India as a country and the livelihood of our people. There has been a four-pronged attack that continued to intensify by the day during these four years," CPI-M leader Sitaram Yechury said.</p>

<p>CPI leader D Raja alleged that the BJP-RSS combine had unleashed "fascism, fear and intimidation".</p>

<p>"There is no other achievement. It is full of failures. All we got is rhetoric in these years...All this rhetoric and there is nothing to celebrate and term as achievements," he said, adding that PM Modi had "not even respected his own promises".</p>

PM Modi's ‘Lahore stopover’ and the Pakistan question

<p>Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Jharkhand today and lay the foundation of development projects worth Rs 27 thousand crores. PM Modi, along with Jharkhand's Chief Minister Raghubar Das, will lay the foundation of All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) at Deoghar.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Other projects that will be kicked off by PM Modi would include the development of Deoghar airport, gas pipeline development at Deoghar AIIMS and in Ranchi among other projects.</p>

<p>Jharkhand will also get around 250 medical centres all across.</p>

<p>According to reports, around Rs, 1103 crore has been allocated for the development of Deoghar AIIMS. Rs 441 crores has been allotted for Deoghar airport. Sindri workshop will be reopened at the expense of Rs 7,000 crores while Rs 11,668 crore will be spent for the setting up of an NTPC plant in Patratu.&nbsp;</p>

<p>PM Modi will travel to Sindri from Dhanbad at around 3.30pm on Friday. After unveiling the details of the development project, the Prime Minister will hold a meeting with state officials and Jharkhand CM in the evening.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The Prime Minister&nbsp;will also visit West Bengal today.&nbsp;</p>

Jharkhand will also get around 250 medical centres all across. According to reports, around Rs, 1103 crore has been allocated for the development of Deoghar AIIMS. Rs 441 crores has been allotted for Deoghar airport. Sindri workshop will be reopened at the expense of Rs 7,000 crores while Rs 11,668 crore will be spent for the setting up of an NTPC plant in Patratu. PM Modi will travel to Sindri from Dhanbad at around 3.30pm on Friday. After unveiling the details of the development project, the Prime Minister will hold a meeting with state officials and Jharkhand CM in the evening. The Prime Minister will also visit West Bengal today.

<p>Terming Jharkhand as a land of "courage", the Prime Minister said the state and the Centre have been working hand-in-hand from past four years for the progress of the state and empowerment of the people.</p>

<p>PM Modi, along with Jharkhand's Chief Minister Raghubar Das, will also lay the foundation of All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) at Deoghar.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The prime minister said that the establishment of&nbsp;AIIMS&nbsp;in Jharkhand will transform the healthcare sector in the state.</p>

<p>Tracing back the achievement of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) after assuming power, PM Modi said it was his government who made the electricity available to 18,000 villages of the country.</p>

<p>He further said they aim to make electricity available to every household in India.</p>

<p>"We worked to brighten the lives of people in these villages and took electricity there," the prime minister said.</p>

<p>He assured that soon the fertiliser plants, which had stopped working, will be revived, which will benefit Eastern India.&nbsp;</p>

<p>She further said,&nbsp;"We are getting all cooperation from India, as both, the countries want to alleviate poverty in this region. By 2041 we want to develop Bangladesh into a 'Sonar Bangla' (Golden Bangladesh)".</p>

<p>Prime Minister Modi&nbsp;the other hand chose to remain silent in the Rohingya crisis and highlighted the cultural ties existing between India and Pakistan which he said were defined by several public policies.&nbsp;</p>

India is struggling to reinforce its credentials in its own neighbourhood against a resurgent China. &nbspThe United States, under Donald Trump, conveys only incoherence. Ties with Russia are under strain as Moscow moves closer to China and Pakistan. &nbspHere's a look at four years of PM Modi's foreign policy.</p>

<p>In politics, as in diplomacy, gestures matter. &nbspSo when Russia's president Vladimir Putin personally saw off Narendra Modi in Sochi on Monday night, it conveyed much about the nature of their talks and the depth of the relationship. &nbsp&nbsp</p>

<p>"We can proudly say that the partnership that we had begun has already grown into a large tree of privileged, strategic partnership," PM Modi in Sochi.</p>

<p>But the fact also remains that the India-Russia relationship is struggling for relevance. Bilateral trade between both the countries is low at around $7 billion. India is diversifying its arms purchases away from Russia to ensure our strategic autonomy. &nbspother hiccups in the relationship are Russia's proximity to China.</p>

<p>On the 4th anniversary of the Modi government, it's clear that managing relations with China will remain India's major challenge. &nbspModi's informal summit with China's president Xi Jinping in Wuhan last month may have helped clarify the doubts and the lack of trust. &nbspBut China's growing power and status imply there will be difficulties ahead no matter what the two leaders may believe.&nbsp</p>

<p>"The two leaders underscored the importance of maintaining peace and tranquility in the India-China border regions. They decided that they will strengthen communications between the two militaries in order to build trust and understanding," Vijay Gokhale, Foreign Secretary, India.&nbsp</p>

<p>It doesn't help that Modi's reach out to Donald Trump last year has not given any political direction to the relationship. Trump has taken aim at India's small trade surplus with the US, he has cracked down on immigration and H-1b visas which has hit Indians, new sanctions on Iran will force up oil prices and complicate India's position. &nbsp</p>

<p>Trump has been harder on Pakistan for its support of terrorism but there is no sign that he's willing to hit them where it hurts the most. Pakistan continues to back terror groups in India and is seen to be working alongside China to undermine India in the region. &nbspDebt-laden Sri Lanka is beholden to China, so is the Maldives, so could Nepal and Bangladesh in a few years from now.</p>

<p>How Delhi manages the contradictions of being the big guy in the region without being seen as big brother is a challenge. &nbspYet there's no doubt Modi has single-mindedly moved to heighten India's profile in the world. &nbspIndia is seen and noticed but minus economic heft, will not get a seat at the high table.&nbsp</p>

'Challenge accepted,' says PM Modi to Virat Kohli's fitness dare

<p>Prime Minister Narendra Modi will begin a five-day visit on Tuesday to Indonesia and Singapore, two of India's strategically key partners in the region, with an aim to deepen defence ties, particularly in the Indo-Pacific region.</p>

<p>Announcing the visit, Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said a raft of agreements including in areas of defence and security are expected to be inked during Modi's visit to these two countries, which are members of powerful regional grouping ASEAN.</p>

<p>India and Indonesia are likely to sign a pact on defence cooperation as a similar agreement inked years ago had expired.&nbsp</p>

<p>Secretary (East) in the MEA Preeti Saran said the prime minister will arrive in Indonesia on May 29 and will leave for Singapore from there on May 31 for a three-day visit.</p>

<p>In Singapore, Modi will hold bilateral talks with his Singaporean counterpart and deliver the keynote address at the Shangri-la dialogue which is expected to be attended by top leaders from several important countries.</p>

<p>Asked about Singapore's apparent reservations over formation of a quadrilateral coalition among India, the US, Australia and Japan, she said there has been a "deep sense" of appreciation among the ASEAN nations about New Delhi's views about peace and security in the region.</p>

<p>"We give primacy and importance to ASEAN's unity and ASEAN's centrality in the region," she said. Singapore is a key member country of the 10-nation ASEAN grouping with which India has been intensifying its defence and security ties.&nbsp</p>

<p>The US, Australia and several other leading powers have been favouring a greater role by India in the Indo-Pacific region where China has been flexing its military might.</p>

<p>About Modi's visit to Indonesia, Saran said the country is India's closest maritime neighbour and there will be discussions on ways to deepen maritime cooperation, particularly in the Indo-Pacific region.&nbsp</p>

<p>Earlier this year, both countries held their first security dialogue during which areas for boosting military cooperation were identified.</p>

<p>Asked whether Indonesia will give Indian navy ships access to deep-sea port in Sabang, Saran did not give a direct reply, but said discussions have been underway on enhancing overall connectivity and cooperation.</p>

<p>Boosting trade and enhancing connectivity will be another focus area of Modi's visit to Indonesia, which will be his first to the country as PM.</p>

<p>Saran said the prime minister's engagement in Jakarta will include his address at a gathering of Indian community and at a forum of top businessmen.&nbsp</p>

<p>He will also inaugurate a kite festival jointly organised by a leading Indonesian museum and Kite museum of Ahmedabad. The kite festival will depict common theme of Ramayana and Mahabharata, showcasing cultural links between the two countries.</p>

<p>On June 1, Modi will hold extensive talks with Singaporean PM Lee Hsien Loong besides addressing CEOs of top 20 companies of the country during which he is expected to highlight the reforms initiated by his government to boost the economy.</p>

<p>Saran said both the countries are likely to ink a number of pacts in the areas of defence, space and skill development.</p>

<p>In Singapore, the PM will attend a business and community event, will participate at an interaction with the president and board members of the Nanyang University, one of the premier educational institution globally, and inaugurate a plaque at a place where Mahatma Gandhi's ashes were immersed.&nbsp</p>

<p>West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee may also show her presence at the event.</p>

<p>The meeting between PM Modi, Sheikh Hasina and Mamata Banerjee is expected to discuss issues such as Teesta water sharing dispute. The river which flows through West Bengal and Bangladesh is a bone of contention between the two regions.&nbsp;In India, water is a state subject, which means that the federal government shall refer to the provincial government. Therefore, the Mamata-Hasina talks become that much more crucial for the resolution of the Teesta waters issue.</p>

<p>If Mamata Banerjee relents, it would come as a shot in the arm for Sheikh Hasina as elections are due in Bangladesh in a few months' time.</p>

<p>Bangladesh may also press&nbsp;India to get Myanmar to take back the Rohingya refugees.</p>

<p>Prime Minister Narendra Modi reached Sochi, Russia, on Monday afternoon to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin in the first-ever informal summit. According to reports, the summit may be held at Putin's private villa where the President had previously hosted German Chancellor Angela Merkel.&nbsp;</p>

<p>During the summit, both the leaders will discuss international matters, "in a broad and long-term perspective with the objective of further strengthening our special and privileged strategic partnership," noted a release from the Ministry of External Affairs.&nbsp;According to reports, the two leaders will meet for around four to six hours for "agenda-less" talks.</p>

PM Narendra Modi meets Russian President Vladimir Putin, hails 'friendship'

<p>Ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit, separatist leaders Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Syed Ali Shah Geelani were put under house arrest on Saturday as restrictions were imposed in parts of the city following their call to march towards Lal Chowk.</p>

<p>The police reached the Hyderpora residence of Geelani and Naseem Bagh area residence of Farooq and conveyed to them the decision of the Jammu and Kashmir authorities of placing them under house arrest as a precautionary measure, officials said.</p>

<p>"As the authoritarian rulers once again belie any claim to democracy by imposing #HouseArrests #Curfew #Restrictions #Barricades #Blockades closure of educational institutions on the visit of Indian PM to valley, I will peacefully march towards #LalChowk at 11 am," Farooq tweeted this morning.</p>

<p>The separatists had given a call for a march to Lal Chowk, located in the heart of the city, to protest against the alleged violence by security forces in the valley.</p>

<p>During his Friday sermons, Farooq had said that the one-month suspension of anti-militancy operations in the Valley was not enough.&nbsp</p>

<p>He had urged the Centre to revoke draconian laws such as the Armed Forces Special Powers Act and the Public Safety Act besides initiating a dialogue process with Pakistan and the people of Kashmir, especially the separatist groups.</p>

<p>Lal Chowk has been barricaded and all entry points sealed to prevent people from gathering in the area, the officials said.</p>

<p>Tight security measures were placed in the entire city last night in the wake of the prime minister's arrival in Srinagar this afternoon.</p>

<p>Restrictions were imposed in downtown areas and vehicular movement, other than that of tourists, was bare minimum.</p>

<p>The roads wore a deserted look as people preferred to remain indoors.</p>

<p>A three-tier security ring has been thrown around the city ahead of Modi's visit and all roads leading to the Sher-e-Kashmir International Convention Centre were blocked for any vehicular movement.</p>

<p>According to the traffic police advisory, all roads leading to the venue would be closed until Sunday afternoon until the prime minister is in the city.&nbsp</p>

<p>The river police wing of state police, the CRPF and the BSF have been deployed in the Dal lake while the Army has been asked to dominate the Zaberwan peak overlooking the venue where Modi would carry out the inaugurate a power project and a ring road around Srinagar.&nbsp</p>

A scholar of the Mahayana school of Buddhism, he was head priest of the Spituk Gompa. He died in 2003.&nbsp</p>

<p>Bakula Rinpoche served the state and nation as he was elected as the member of legislative assembly of Jammu and Kashmir in 1951. He became a minister in the then state government.&nbsp</p>

<p>He was elected as Member of Parliament representing Ladakh for two consecutive terms -- 1967 and 1971. During 1962 Sino-Indian war, he had allowed the Army to convert a section of his Pethub Monastery into a makeshift military hospital.&nbsp</p>

<p>In 1989, he was appointed as India's ambassador to Mongolia which made him the first and only Monk diplomat in the world.&nbsp</p>

<p>Over a period of ten years, he helped reopen ancient monasteries, organise Buddhist peace conferences and re-established Buddhism. Under his guidance, Pethub Monastery and Dechen Ling Nunnery in Ulaanbaatar developed into important centres of learning for the Mongolian Buddhists.&nbsp</p>

<p>His services in Mongolia were deeply appreciated and he is fondly remembered as 'Elchin Bagsh' (ambassador-teacher). In 2001, he was conferred the Polar Star award, Mongolia's second-highest civilian award. The Pethub Stangey Choskhor Ling Monastery was also built at Ulaanbaatar.</p>

<p>Former governor S K Sinha had renamed Leh airport as Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport as his Spituk Monastery was in the vicinity of the airfield.</p>

<p>At the same event, Modi will unveil a plaque to mark the commencement of work on the Zojila tunnel, which will provide all-weather connectivity to this region.</p>

<p>The 14 km tunnel will be country's longest road tunnel and Asia's longest bi-directional tunnel.&nbsp</p>

<p>The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, chaired by the prime minister, had approved the construction, operation and maintenance of this tunnel between Baltal and Minamarg, on the Srinagar-Leh section at a total cost of Rs 6,800 crore earlier this year.&nbsp</p>

<p>The construction of this tunnel will provide all-weather connectivity between Srinagar, Kargil and Leh and will lead to all-round economic and socio-cultural integration of these regions.</p>

<p>The road remains cut off from November to March due to heavy snowfall, landslides and avalanches. Normally, it takes around four hours to drive through the mountainous 9 km through Zoji La but after the construction of tunnel, which is likely to be completed in 2026, it will take only 15 minutes.&nbsp</p>

<p>The hydroelectric plant is an&nbsp;$864 million dam located 5 km north of Bandipore in Jammu and Kashmir.</p>

<p>The 330 MW Hydroelectricity plant is part of a run-of-the-river hydroelectric scheme that is designed to divert water from the Kishanganga River in Srinagar to a power plant in the Jhelum River basin.<br />
