On the third and last day of his Singapore visit, Prime Minister Narendra Modi met former Singaporean premier and Emeritus Senior Minister (ESM) Goh Chok Tong here on Saturday.

The two leaders held talks on issues of mutual interest.

ESM Goh served as the country's second prime minister from 1990 to 2004. Prior to this, he also served as the deputy prime minister of Singapore from 1985 to 1990.

ESM Goh has also served in several cabinet berths under the first Prime Minister of Singapore, Lee Kuan Yew and most notably as Senior Minister under incumbent Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong's cabinet from 2004 to 2011.

In 2011, Prime Minister Lee appointed Goh as Emeritus Senior Minister. He is also a senior advisor to the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS), which is the country's central bank.

After the meeting, Prime Minister Modi will unveil the plaque marking the immersion site of the Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi's ashes at Clifford Pier.

Prime Minister Modi will then hold a meeting with US Secretary of Defence Jim Mattis.

Mattis had served as the Marine Corps Reserve for over four decades before retiring in 2013. In January 2017, US President Donald Trump appointed Mattis as his defence secretary.

Next, Prime Minister Modi will visit the National Orchid Garden, which is located within the Singapore Botanic Gardens. It is the only tropical garden to be listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The Prime Minister will pay a visit to Chuliya Mosque, one of the oldest mosques of Singapore located in Chinatown. It has been the country's national monument since 1974.

Prime Minister Modi will visit the Sri Mariamman Temple, which is located nearby to the Chuliya Mosque and is the oldest Hindu temple in Singapore.

Lastly, Prime Minister Modi will visit by going to Changi Naval Base, where he will see the Indian Naval Ship (INS) Satpura and interact with officers and sailors of the Indian Navy and Royal Singapore Navy.

After these engagements, he will emplane for New Delhi, concluding his five-day visit to Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore.

India and Singapore held a wide-range discussion on strategic and economic issues, technology and innovation during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to the Southeast Asian nation, said the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Friday.

"Discussions were held on strategic and economic issues and technology and innovation. Prime Minister Modi in his discussion to the leadership of Singapore conveyed our intention to play a balanced and constructive cooperative role in advancing peace and stability in the entire region," MEA Secretary (East) Preeti Saran said while briefing the media.

While addressing a keynote at the Shangri-La Dialogue on Friday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi called the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) bloc as "architecture of peace and security in the region" and an "example and inspiration" for international cooperation.

He noted that the Southeast Asian region has maritime and territorial, political, defence, and economic ties with India.

Further, referring to the significance of Indo-Pacific region, Prime Minister Modi said, "India stands for a free, open, inclusive region which includes all nations in this geography as also others beyond who have a stake in it."

The Prime Minister highlighted the deepening bilateral ties of India and China and said the world would be a better place if the two Asian giants work together in trust and confidence.

He said both the countries, which share a long and disputed boundary, have displayed maturity and wisdom in managing issues and ensuring a peaceful border as there "is a growing intersection in our international presence."

Later, Prime Minister Modi talked of the bilateral relations between India and the United States and said, "India's global strategic partnership with the United States continues to deepen across the extraordinary breadth of our relationship."

Terming Singapore as a "Gateway of India to the east", Prime Minister Modi said both India and Singapore shared multilateral ties in the fields of religion, culture, art and commerce, language and literature.

On the same note, he described the relations between India and Singapore as 'SAGAR' (Security and Growth for All in the Region).

The Prime Minister called on nations to collectively address mutual insecurities and terror threats being faced by the countries across the world and called for a collaborative effort in countering the challenges, including terrorism, being faced by the global community.

Earlier on Friday, Prime Minister Modi gifted Prime Minister Lee a replica of 6th-century Buddhagupta Stele.

A total of 14 Business to Business (B2B) and Business to Government (B2G) were signed during the event at Marina Bay Sands Convention Centre in Singapore.

Modi,&nbsp;after mentioning China and Russia, continued to emphasise India’s strong cultural relationship with South East Asia.

He spoke about India’s deepening defence ties with South East Asian economies. “With Singapore, we have the longest and uninterrupted naval exercise which has lasted for 25 years,” Modi said. He gave similar examples of close regional cooperation between India and other countries when it came to naval affairs and patrolling of the sea. He said that our presence will grow in the region and will grow on the bed rock of peace.

He admitted that there has been a disruption in the global order. “Despite progress, we live in the age of uncertainty, clashing vision and competing models,” he said. He also said that internal disturbances are acquiring ethnic fault lines. “It is an interdependent world and nations need to rise above the divisions and work together,” he said.

“I see ASEAN as an inspiration,” he said. He said that ASEAN’s unity is essential for this region to prosper. He said that ASEAN unity must be supported. “ASEAN lies at the heart of the new Indo Pacific,” Modi said. He said that ASEAN is required for a stable world and this entity is not against anyone.

Koh was among 10 ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) receipts of the prestigious award this year.

Koh, 80, has served as Singapore's ambassador to the US and the UN, and as president of the Third United Nations Conference on the Law of the Sea in 1981 and 1982.

He is currently chairman of the board of governors of the Centre for International Law at the National University of Singapore.

Koh was chief negotiator for the US-Singapore Free Trade Agreement, and was in the team that successfully argued the case for Singapore's claim to Pedra Branca at the International Court of Justice. He is also a key figure in Singapore's semi-official strategic dialogues with Asia's three most powerful nations - China, Japan and India.

Beyond diplomacy, Koh has also been a champion of the arts, the environment and civil society, and an outspoken advocate of civic engagement.

Koh said he is "very honoured and grateful" to receive the award.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Singapore on Thursday afternoon for his three-day-visit and was welcomed by the Indian community with full enthusiasm and warmth. This visit is said to be crucial for the Act East Policy.&nbsp;

"There is a great deal of anticipation and expectations on what&nbsp;Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision is about the Indo-Pacific region," New Delhi's envoy to Singapore, Jawed Ashraf&nbsp;told ANI in an interview.

"We have strong bilateral relationships and a productive, meaningful partnership in the international platform. Singapore is really a springboard, a gateway to South East Asia. It is also a very important defence partner of India. The four pillars of the India-Singapore partnership are strategic, economic, innovation and technology, human and cultural links, he added.

The Prime Minister would be joining a wide range of programmes during this visit. Foreign Minister Raveesh Kumar said that other than meeting the big leadership of Singapore, PM Modi would also deliver keynote address at the 18th Shangri-La Dialogue.&nbsp;

Prime Minister Modi is scheduled to visit the Indian Heritage Centre in Little India, where he will launch a permanent platform to bring Indian artisans, craftsmen to showcase their crafts to support rural livelihood. Furthermore, he will be launching schemes like Bheem, RuPay, which is a new Domestic Card Payment Scheme, to take Digital India to a new level.

Eight agreements in collaboration with the Nanyang Technological University (NTU) would be signed for higher education, technology and research work during the Prime Minister's visit.

Singapore startups can now gain faster entry to India's vibrant startup ecosystem to form partnerships and co-innovate with Indian startups, said ESG in a statement yesterday.

As a start, TiE Singapore will be running a startup mission in July with 10 Singapore startups to meet with Indian startups, corporates, mentors and investors to partner and co-innovate solutions in fintech, e-services and deeptech.

According to reports, the Central Bureau of Investigation has registered a case against Delhi's Health and Power Minister Satyendra Jain and former PWD Engineer-in-Chief SK Srivastava, among others. The CBI on Wednesday raided Jain's residence for allegedly hiring the creative teams for Mohalla clinics, schools and other such programmes

According to reports, the Central Bureau of Investigation has registered a case against Delhi's Health and Power Minister Satyendra Jain and former PWD Engineer-in-Chief SK Srivastava, among others. Those named have allegedly been involved in the irregular hiring of creative teams in the Public Works Department. 'What does PM Modi want?' Kejriwal reacts on CBI raids at Delhi's health minister's residence

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Indonesian President Joko Widodo on Wednesday flew kites as they inaugurated the first joint kite exhibition themed on India's largest epics Ramayana and Mahabharata at Jakarta's National Monument.

Prime Minister Modi and President Widodo participated in the 'Kite Exhibition' which showcased the strong civilisational links between India and Indonesia. The two leaders flew kites with broad smiles on their faces.

"Cultural connect touching the skies! Ramayana themed joint kite exhibit unveiled...Ahmedabad and Jakarta Kite Museums exchange MoU," Ministry of External Affairs Spokesperson Raveesh Kumar said in a tweet.

"PM @narendramodi and Indonesian President @jokowi together taking the relationship to new heights!" he tweeted along with a picture of both the leaders flying their kites at the exhibition.

The exhibition is themed on Hindu mythology epics of Ramayana and Mahabharata with images on kites of Lord Rama killing his rival Ravana and of demons.

The Ramayana theme is designed by Indonesian organisers while the Mahabharata theme has been designed by Indians.

To the relief of the Indian diaspora in Indonesia, India's Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has decided to look into the issue of non-availability of <a href="www.wionews.com/india-news/home-away-from-home-little-india-in-indonesia-140726">certain Indian snacks</a> and food items in Jakarta. Many Indians living in Jakarta told WION that Basmati rice, Indian tea and Bhujiya are not easily available in the city. Other Indian food items too run short from time to time. Indians in Jakarta say that this was not the case last year.

"We would be looking at the issue to remove all the impediments," Preeti Saran, Secretary, East told WION.

India's ambassador to Indonesia, Pradeep Rawat, added that availability of Indian condiments may differ from region to region. "This might not be the case in Sumatra. You will not hear this complaint on rice on that side," he said. Rawat emphasised that it can also be an issue of demand and supply. "Quarantine regimes come into effect from time to time, delaying the movement of goods which is not limited to Indonesia as it is a global phenomenon," he said.

He affirmed that Indian embassy in Indonesia has ministerial channels and dedicated working groups which take up such issues at regular intervals to the Indian community's satisfaction.

Saran added that trade ministers of both the countries would be meeting once a year and it would be incumbent upon the officials to look into all such issues. She also said that this issue is not specific to Indonesian diaspora. "Sometimes it also depends on the size of the community," she said.

The Secretary, East, added that the government is working towards liberalising the visa regime to facilitate greater people to people contact between India and Indonesia.

Many Indians also look forward to going to visiting their home country for medical treatment for want of better doctors and cheaper services. Medical services and medicine is expensive in Indonesia and India works far better for the diaspora as a cheap medical destination.

Indians say Bhujiya, Basmati rice not available in Jakarta, MEA says will look into it

Indonesia and India pledged on Wednesday to step up defense and maritime cooperation, with plans to develop a strategic Indonesian naval port in the Indian Ocean, the leaders of the two countries said after meeting in Jakarta.

Indonesian President Joko Widodo met Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to discuss, among other issues, developing infrastructure and an economic zone at Sabang, on the tip of Sumatra island and at the mouth of the Malacca Strait, one of the busiest shipping channels for global trade.

Modi, who is making his first trip to Indonesia, is also set to visit the Istiqlal mosque in the capital of the world’s biggest Muslim-majority country.

The Indian leader flies to Malaysia on Thursday to meet recently elected Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad before heading to neighboring Singapore to address a regional security forum, the Shangri-La Dialogue.

Last week, Indonesia’s chief maritime affairs minister, Luhut Pandjaitan, said the existing port at Sabang, which is 40 meters (131 ft) deep, could be developed to accommodate both commercial vessels and submarines, according to media.

Indonesia’s transport minister told reporters on Wednesday the Sabang would get a transshipment port that could be developed over two years.

Asked about Indian investment in Sabang, Indian foreign ministry official Preeti Saran said New Delhi was interested in helping build infrastructure across Southeast Asia.

“There have been discussions about building infrastructure, it’s not just seaports, but airports,” she said. “There would be a lot of interest among Indian companies.”

Widodo and Modi also signed pacts on cooperation in the pharmaceuticals and technology industries.

"These are the same jails where you (British) had kept Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru and other top Indian leaders," Swaraj told reporters on Monday when asked about the focus on conditions in Indian jails during a hearing in a British court over Vijay Mallya's extradition to India.

Swaraj informed that PM Modi had told the British PM that it was not proper for courts to ask about the condition of Indian jails as the British themselves had kept Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru and other Indian leaders in these prisons.

"He also told her that when our fugitives come here (Britain), it takes time to send them back," Swaraj said.

According to reports, PM Modi conveyed his opinion to PM May during his talks on the sidelines of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM). The Prime Minister had also raised the issue of delay in sending back Indian fugitives by British authorities.

Liquor baron Vijay Mallya's lawyers have been opposing Indian Government's plea for extraditing him citing poor hygiene and overcrowding in Indian jails.&nbsp;A British court is considering India's requests for extradition of Mallya.

Mallya is facing charges of fraud and money laundering amounting to around Rs 9,000 crores. He was arrested by Scotland Yard on an extradition warrant in April 2017.

According to an MEA statement released in July 2017, Mallya is among 53 persons who face prosecution complaints from the Enforcement Directorate (ED) under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, 2002.

Mallya is absconding and currently lives in the United Kingdom.&nbsp;

PM Modi who will be visiting Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore said he was confident his visit will create greater synergy with Indonesia and further elevate bilateral ties.

In his Facebook post, the Indian prime minister said: "This is my first visit to Indonesia as Prime Minister. I am looking forward to my discussions with President Widodo on 30 May, as also to our joint interaction with the India-Indonesia CEOs Forum."

"I will also address the Indian community in Indonesia," PM Modi added.

In Singapore on May 31st, PM Modi will be meeting newly-elected prime minister of Singapore Mahathir Mohamad.

"On way to Singapore, I will make a brief halt in Malaysia to congratulate the new Malaysian leadership. I look forward to meet Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad," the Indian prime minister said before leaving for Singapore.

"In Singapore I will be focusing on enhancing India-Singapore partnership in areas of Fintech, skill development, urban planning and artificial intelligence," PM Modi wrote on his Facebook.

On June 1st, PM Modi will be addressing the Shangri-La Dialogue, this is the first time an Indian prime minister will be addressing the gathering.

"I will also address a business and community event followed by a roundtable meeting with select top CEOs of Singapore to discuss business and investment opportunities," the prime minister added.

The prime minister will also unveiling a plaque at Clifford Pier on June 2nd, where Gandhiji’s ashes were immersed at&nbsp;sea on March 27th, 1948.&nbsp;

During his visit, PM Modi will also visit the Indian Naval ship INS Satpura and interact with officers and sailors of the Indian Navy and Singapore Navy.

Launched by Prime Minister Modi on May 1, 2016, in Uttar Pradesh's Ballia, Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana aims to safeguard the health of women and children by providing them with a clean cooking fuel - LPG. Ensuring women's empowerment, especially in rural India, the connections are issued in the name of women of the households.

Rs. 8000 crores&nbsp;has been allocated towards the implementation of the scheme. On a related note, on Sunday, on the occasion of his government completing four years at the Centre, Prime Minister Modi launched a survey on the NaMo App to gauge people's mood about his administration.
