At least 24 people have been killed while 35 are injured after a bus veered off a cliff in the mountainous region of southeastern Peru, according to news agency AFP. The inter-city bus was travelling overnight in the Andes mountain between Huancayo and Huanta when it careened off into a 200m-deep (650 ft) ravine. Locals were the first to arrive on the scene and managed to pull out some passengers who were alive inside the mangled vehicle. The firefighters from Huanta and the province of Churcampa were quickly dispatched to the area, but not before two dozen people had lost their lives. "The number of dead has risen to 24, including two children," the health ministry posted on social media. So far, the authorities have not revealed what might have caused the fatal accident. However, the mayor of a nearby town told a local radio channel that the accident occurred on the spot that had been left damaged after a landslide a month ago. The mayor added that the spot had not been repaired and could have potentially caused the unfortunate accident. In pics | Peru: Archaeologists unearth 3,000-year-old priestly tomb The accident could have turned even more disastrous if it wasn't for some bushes in which the bus got stuck. The branches of the tree prevented the coach from being washed away in a nearby river which could have increased the casualty count. Such accidents are common Such bus crashes are a regular phenomenon in Peru, especially at night on the mountain highways. Poor road conditions, lack of signage, and poor enforcement of traffic rules leading to speeding are a few of the reasons for increased road accidents. FIFA World Cup Qualifiers: Marquinhos earns Brazil late win over Peru

When it comes to Peru, the pre-Hispanic era is mainly dominated by popular conceptions of the Inca culture. These pre-modern cultures and empires fought and lost with the attacking European powers. But the idea that these lands have a rich history beyond what is popularly known remains hidden somewhat.

A team of archaeologists comprising those from Peru and Japan have found a pre-Hispanic, pre-Incan archaeological site dedicated to ancestor worship. The site, found in northern Peru has burial chambers, human remains and ceramic offerings.

"We have discovered an archaeological site of the Wari period with an antiquity of between 800 to 1000 years AD" in the Cajamarca region 900 kilometres (560 miles) north of Lima, Japanese archaeologist Shinya Watanabe told AFP on Saturday.

"Two burial chambers with pits for placing mummies and offerings to the ancestors were found at the site," the expert said.

There are two levels in each of the burial chambers. Both have five niches in the walls which contain offerings that include mollusc shells, ceramic fragments and a tripod dish that has three conical supports.

"It is a great find because the archaeologists were looking for evidence of the Wari culture," said Watanabe, who is a professor at Nanzan University in Japan.

A bundle containing a female character, a black ceremonial vessel from pre-Incan Wari culture, two musical wind instruments made of ceramic and two copper fasteners have also been found.

The discovery has been made in Jequetepeque Valley in San Miguel province in Cajamarca.

"Many people of multiple origins lived here. It was a ceremonial centre dedicated to the cult of the ancestors," Watanabe said.

Judith Padilla, the head of Cajamarca's culture office, said that the findings enable us to understand "the lifestyle and ritual practices" of ancient societies that lived in what is called Peru now.

The Wari Culture survived between the 7th and 13th centuries in present-day Peru. But by the 12th century, they were conquered by the rising Inca empire.

The discovery of the ancestor worship site was made by the Project of Archaeological Investigation (PIA) Terlen-La Bomba and it occupies about 24 hectares (60 acres).

Peru's Ministry of Culture indicated that the main objective of the research has a focus on understanding the socio-political system of the Cajamarca culture during what is known as Middle Horizon (900 to 1000 years AD) and its ties with the Wari culture.

An 11-year-old child was found pregnant earlier this month she'd been repeatedly raped by her stepfather and the incident only came to light after the girl started showing a pregnant tummy at 4.5 months of pregnancy. She knocked on hospital door after hospital but all of them denied her an abortion because abortion is illegal in Peru and it's considered a crime that deserves to be punished. Rights groups in fact took the matter into their hands only after immense pressure from the United Nations the girl child was finally operated upon.

The law enforcement officials of Peru suspect that the 'seven-foot-tall aliens', who were reported to have terrorised villagers in Peru, are nothing but illegal gold-mining crime syndicates.

These creatures were said to be 'floating' and 'armoured' menaces and were reported to be impervious to bullets, as claimed by local leaders. The attackers were compared to 'green goblins' by the locals and also to local Peruvian superstitions about 'los Pelacaras' (the Face Peelers).

However, the enforcement officials have now given a new theory to the debate, claiming that they were likely the gold mafias belonging to drug cartels like Brazil's 'O Primeiro Comando da Capital,' Colombia's 'Clan del Golfo,' FARC, which ravaged Latin America for decades.

Peru's National Prosecutor's Office, which is carrying out an investigation of the 'alien attacks,' has held these gold 'mafias' responsible, who were ejected partially from Colombia and Brazil by their militaries.

Hiding illegal gold pits

These jetpack-flying gold cartels are now trying to instill fear by spreading an 'alien' terror through their actions in Peru, as per the prosecutors. They claimed that these cartels aim at keeping the local people locked in their homes and away from the illegal gold pits of the cartels.

Prosecutors said that the jetpacks were first used by these illegal mining cartels to explore prospects for gold deeper in the forest surrounding the Nanay river in Peru.

In rural Alto Nanay, members of the small Ikitu population are surrounded by dense forest, where it is reported that gold is deposited like silt on the riverbeds along the tributaries of the Nanay river that flow into the Amazon.

The reporters were informed by the Ikitu member that the 'alien' siege started this summer on July 11, as locals complained of getting attacked by a 7-foot-tall mysterious creature that appeared in dark-coloured hoods ever since.

However, another key witness for prosecutors, who is a school teacher, claimed to see eerie beings flying from the ground through more terrestrial means.

Anti-government protesters in Peru, who have been demanding President Dina Boularte’s resignation and fresh elections, clashed with police in the capital city of Lima on Saturday (July 29). According to a report by the news agency Reuters early Sunday, female indigenous protesters and the police were seen pushing and hitting each other as tear gas canisters were kicked down the street, rolling back and forth between demonstrators and officers. One person was reported to be injured in the clashes. “This president (Peruvian President Dina Boluarte) is a usurper. She is celebrating the national holidays, we aren’t celebrating national holidays because this woman has ordered the murder of our brothers in the provinces,” a protester, who did not wish to be identified, told Reuters. Since December last year, Peru has been rocked by protests, following the ousting of then-president Pedra Castillo. The demonstrations died after February and have struggled to regain momentum. However, the latest protests have been dubbed "the third takeover of Lima". Prez Boluarte to request expansion of legislative powers On Friday, which was Peru's Independence Day, President Dina Boularte said she would request an expansion of legislative powers and is open to reshaping a historically unpopular Congress. In her Independence Day speech, Boluarte called the latest protests a threat against democracy and said she would request legislative powers from Congress for 120 days to fight crime, adding she was open to reverting Congress to a two-chamber legislature from a single-chamber format. "(These are) measures Peru needs to face, with more strength and efficiency, delinquency and crime," she added. The president also called for a grand national reconciliation between all Peruvians, saying that ideological differences shouldn't "lead us to live in a society of enemies, reigned by unnecessary and irreconcilable antagonism." On Friday, protesters attempted to reach Congress but were held back by police after a brief clash. Crowds began to disperse as Boluarte's three-hour-long speech drew to a close. Peru has declared a state health emergency after detecting the Guillain-Barré syndrome outbreak. The emergency will last for 90 days as officials grapple with an “unusual increase" in cases.

Since June 2023, 182 cases have been reported nationwide, of which 147 have been discharged, 31 remain hospitalised, and four have died, MercoPress news agency reported.

GBS is a rare disorder that affects the immune system causing it to attack the nerves of the body. It can lead to muscle weakness and in severe cases it can cause paralysis or even death.

The health emergency follows a request by Health Minister César Vásquez last Wednesday, who noted that an increase in the number of cases could mean “a lack of immunoglobulin" (antibodies).

In its official statement published on Saturday, the Peru government said that 103 cases were reported until June 23 and the “average monthly number of cases was less than 20 cases per month at the national level" (less than that reported in years prior to the 2019 outbreak).

The decree by President Dina Boluarte also states that around US$ 3.27 million will be allocated to improving patient care, reinforcing control on the number of detections, and drafting reports for the population and health personnel.

What is that Guillain-Barre syndrome?

Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) is a neurological disorder and an autoimmune disease.

The first symptoms of the disease are weakness and tingling in your hands and feet.

"The damage prevents the nerves from sending certain information, such as touch sensations, to the spinal cord and brain. This causes a feeling of numbness. In addition, the brain and spinal cord can no longer transmit signals back to the body, leading to muscle weakness," Medical News Today (MNT) says.

How does it originate?

The exact cause of Guillain-Barre syndrome is currently not known. However, two-thirds of patients report symptoms of an infection in the preceding six weeks. These include COVID-19, respiratory or gastrointestinal infection or Zika virus.

Symptoms

Guillain-Barre syndrome often begins with tingling and weakness starting in your feet and legs and spreading to your upper body and arms, National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke notes.

Some people notice the first symptoms in the arms or face. As Guillain-Barre syndrome progresses, muscle weakness can turn into paralysis.

Signs and symptoms of Guillain-Barre syndrome may include:

A pins and needles sensation in your fingers, toes, ankles or wrists

Weakness in your legs that spreads to your upper body

Unsteady walking or inability to walk or climb stairs

Difficulty with facial movements, including speaking, chewing or swallowing

Double vision or inability to move the eyes

Severe pain that may feel achy, shooting or cramplike and may be worse at night

Difficulty with bladder control or bowel function

Rapid heart rate

Low or high blood pressure

Difficulty breathing

People with Guillain-Barre syndrome usually experience their most significant weakness within two weeks after symptoms begin.

Treatment

No cure has so far been developed to treat Guillain-Barre syndrome. However, there are treatments that help with treating the symptoms and reduce the severity and duration of the illness.

It takes at least two to three weeks for most patients to recover, but there have been cases where it took years to fully recover.

Moreover, the disease also leaves permanent nerve damage in some patients, causing them chronic weakness, numbness or fatigue.

What is Guillain-Barré syndrome, the outbreak that forced Peru to declare emergency?

State of emergency declared in Peru as Ubinas volcano spews ash

A nearly 3,000-year-old mummy was discovered by Peruvian archaeologists near the capital city of Lima on Wednesday. This is the latest discovery in the Andean nation dating to pre-Hispanic times.

The remains of its hair and skull were initially found by researchers and students of San Marcos University in a cotton bundle during an excavation.

Further work at the Huaca La Florida archaeological site, in the central Rimac Valley, later uncovered the rest of the mummy.

The archaeologists believe that the mummy was probably from the Manchay culture, which developed in the valleys of Lima between 1500 and 1000 BC.

Archaeologist Miguel Aguilar said that the person, who had undergone the mummification process, was likely offered up during the construction of temples built in a U-shape that pointed towards the sunrise.

"We have discovered a pre-Hispanic burial with a mummy. It was a person who had undergone a mummification process on the inside. It was a stone tomb. The person who had been left or offered up (a reference to sacrifice) in this area happened in the last phase of the construction of this temple. It is approximately 3,000 years old," Reuters quoted Aguilar as saying.

"It most probably belongs to the Manchay culture. It is a culture that developed in the valleys of Lima between 1,500 and 1,000 BCE. They are associated with the culture of the U-shaped temples, which are a group of buildings that have a U-shape in their layout and are always pointing towards the sunrise," he added.

Peru has ordered to put one of its former Presidents behind bars. A former President Alejandro Toledo was extradited from the US on Sunday. Toledo became the third head of the state to be imprisoned.

Peru jails another former President: Third ex-Peruvian President Alejandro Toledo detained

Peruvian ex-president Alejandro Toledo surrendered to US authorities Friday, ahead of his expected extradition to Lima where he is accused of corruption and money laundering.

Toledo has lived in the United States for several years, and gave himself up at a federal court building in San Jose, California, where he was handed over to the US Marshals Service.

The 77-year-old, who served as Peru's president from 2001 until 2006, is wanted by Peruvian prosecutors investigating a sprawling scandal involving Brazilian construction conglomerate Odebrecht.

Toledo, who holds a doctorate from Stanford University, is accused of taking millions of dollars from Odebrecht in exchange for favored treatment in bidding on public works.

He denies all charges, which could see him jailed for up to 20 years if convicted in Peru.

Friday's surrender appeared to be the start of the endgame for a man who was initially detained in California in 2019.

He was put under house arrest in 2020 and ordered to wear an electronic ankle monitor in the swanky Menlo Park area near Stanford.

Earlier this week, the US Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit rejected Toledo's most recent legal move to block the extradition Peru has sought since 2018, and a US judge ordered him to surrender.

Peru: Ex-president Toledo surrenders ahead of expected extradition

A court in the United States on Wednesday (April 5) rejected an appeal by former Peru president Alejandro Toledo against his extradition to Peru on corruption charges. This makes it likely that he will be the third former leader who will be jailed in Lima. On Wednesday, Peru's Justice Minister Jose Tello said that a California judge had ordered Toledo to turn himself in to US Marshals Service on Friday and await extradition. Toledo's request for bail was revoked.

Toledo, who was president from 2001 to 2006, is wanted over charges that he received more than $25 million from Brazilian construction company Odebrecht in exchange for help in obtaining public works contracts. Prosecutors are seeking a 20-year-and-six-month prison sentence.

Toledo denies soliciting or receiving bribes. He has not been criminally charged in the US.

"Sooner rather than later, Toledo will answer to Peruvian justice," Tello told television station Canal N, adding that his extradition should take place in a "matter of days".

The Peruvian minister said 77-year-old Toledo is expected to be held while he awaits trial in a jail complex in the outskirts of Lima that was built to hold former president Alberto Fujimori. Former president Pedro Castillo is also being held there.

Fujimori, who ruled from 1990 to 2000, is serving a 25-year prison sentence for human rights abuses, while Castillo is being held in pre-trial detention while he is under investigation for alleged rebellion after trying to dissolve Congress in December. He denies wrongdoing.

Toledo's defence has said it will present another appeal in the U.S., according to Tello, who called it an obvious "delaying tactic."

At least two Peruvian soldiers lost their lives after jumping into a freezing river while trying to flee anti-government protesters, said the defence ministry. It added that four others who jumped were still missing.

The soldiers fled after they were attacked by demonstrators with slingshots and sticks. This happened during an anti-government protest in the city of Ilave, in the southern region of Puno on Sunday.

Authorities said the bodies of Franz Canazas and Alex Quispe had been found in the Ilave river, a tributary to Lake Titicaca, which sits on the border between Peru and Bolivia.

Searches would continue "uninterrupted and will not end until all the missing soldiers have been found," said the defense ministry.

A local health network in Puno said on Sunday that it treated five soldiers who were suffering from hypothermia. The soldiers were rescued by locals.

On Saturday, 16 people, including civilians and soldiers, were injured during clashes between protesters and the military in Ilave.

Peru has seen three months of protests since former president Pedro Castillo was ousted and arrested on December 7 after trying to dissolve parliament and rule by decree.

His supporters are demanding the resignation of Boluarte, as well as fresh elections, a new constitution and the dissolution of parliament.

Peruvian soldiers die after jumping in river to flee protesters

A pre-Hispanic mummy, estimated to be between 600 to 800 years old, was recovered by police from three drunk men in the Peruvian city of Puno. The police officials told CNN that the mummified remains were found on Saturday afternoon in a food delivery bag labelled "Pedidos Ya." Pedidos Ya is a Latin American food app. The bag belonged to a 26-year-old man.

Images of the discovery showed that the mummy was found in a fetal position inside the red delivery bag.

A multiparty dialogue was called by Peruvian President Dina Boluarte on Friday to end the political crisis which has gripped the nation, stating that Peru has a “fragile democracy” at present because of two months of deadly anti-government protests raging across the country. On December 7, Boluarte became the country's president, after the impeachment and arrest of her predecessor Pedro Castillo who had tried to dissolve Congress and rule by decree.

However, since then, Boluarte has been facing opposition from protesters who have asked her to resign and demanded fresh elections.

The protests have turned violent and a new death was reported by officials on Friday, bringing the toll of the people killed amid clashes between protesters and security forces to 49.

"We are living in a fragile democracy," Boluarte said after she refused to resign and also failed to convince Congress to hold elections, which are due in 2026, earlier.

"I think it is the most fragile in Latin America, but it is within Peruvians, within us, to strengthen democracy," Boluarte said while speaking at a press conference, which was also attended by her cabinet ministers.

Boluarte is the sixth president of Peru since March 2018 and the first woman to hold the position.

She was vice president under Castillo before the former president was ousted and charges of rebellion imposed on him.

The fiercest protests have taken place against her in poor southern regions where the population is largely Indigenous and who see Castillo as one of their own.

The protesters have also raised demands for Congress' dissolution and a constituent assembly's formation for rewriting the constitution, which the right-wing opposition rejected.

"In search of peace, I openly call all political leaders of every single party, but also the leaders of social and labour organisations, everyone in general so that we can meet and put the country's agenda on the table," Boluarte said.

In the press conference, Boluarte expressed grief over the death of a 22-year-old who was shot in Apurimac, where the president was born.

"I am very sorry for the death of the citizen in Apurimac yesterday, in that confrontation in which an interprovincial transport bus was set on fire, the toll booth set on fire. My condolences from here to the family," said Boluarte.

She added that few street protests "are not peaceful. They come out with sticks, slingshots, rocks, which are also projectiles that cause damage."

"Not all are marching peacefully. They are coming out to generate violence, chaos and terror,” the president said.
