The small south American nation of Ecuador was once perceived as a haven of peace sandwiched between cocaine-producing Colombia and Peru. Renowned as world's top exporter of bananas, it is home to the biodiverse Galapagos islands. However, in the past five years, things have taken a turn for the worse. Large ports, lax security and endemic corruption have lured foreign drug cartels to its shore.

Five mummies that are some 1,000 years old have been unearthed in the Peruvian capital of Lima, archaeologists said on Tuesday (November 21). The find allegedly belongs to the mummies of four children and an adult and was found at the Huaca La Florida archaeological site in the central Rimac Valley.

Peru archaeologists unearth 1,000-year-old mummies of children in Lima

Researchers have discovered mummified remains of children at a site in the South American country Peru. The mummies which were discovered on Monday (Nov 20) belong to the Ychsma culture that developed on Peru's central coast.

In Peru, the site where the four children's mummies were found is near homes and a field used by a Peruvian professional soccer team for training in Lima, according to the Associated Press.

The hill where the mummies were discovered was covered in rubbish, and excavators worked for months to clear it, according to the AP.

Where exactly the mummies were found?

Some of the human remains were found at the foot of a staircase on a small hill which is believed to have once hidden a temple in Lima. According to experts, the temple was likely built some 3,500 years ago.

"This whole area is a very important ceremonial chamber," Luis Takuda, an archaeologist in Lima's Rimac district, was quoted as saying by Reuters. "The people who lived here during the Ychsma period still considered it a sacred space and therefore buried their dead here."

The mummies' skulls still had hair on them, according to Takuda.

Lima's archaeological relevance

Apart from housing some 10 million people, the Peruvian capital is home to some 400 archaeological ruins.

Peru's largest archaeological sites are located outside Lima in places such as Cusco, which was the capital of the Inca Empire and fell to Spanish conquistadores in the 16th century.

"The people who lived here during the Ychsma period still considered it a sacred space and therefore buried their dead here." The mummies' skulls still had hair on them, according to Takuda. Lima's archaeological relevance Apart from housing some 10 million people, the Peruvian capital is home to some 400 archaeological ruins. Peru's largest archaeological sites are located outside Lima in places such as Cusco, which was the capital of the Inca Empire and fell to Spanish conquistadores in the 16th century.
Peruvian scientists from the state agency that studies glaciers said on Wednesday (Nov 22) that Peru has lost more than half of its glacier surface in the last six decades. The authorities also said that 175 glaciers became extinct due to climate change between 2016 and 2020.

Mayra Mejía, an official with Peru's National Institute of Research of Mountain Glaciers and Ecosystems, or Inaigem, said: "In 58 years, 56.22% of the glacial coverage recorded in 1962 has been lost."

The institute stated that Peru holds 68 per cent of the world's tropical glaciers. While weighing in on the alarming stats, it said that warming temperatures have led to melting and the creation of new mountain lagoons that risk overflowing and flooding.

It was confirmed by Jesús Gómez, director of glacier research at Inaigem, who told The Associated Press that the major factor behind this is the average global temperature increase as it leads to an accelerated retreat of glaciers.

"The new lagoons could be, in the future, water reserves, but being at high altitudes they cause a danger of overflowing and flooding," said Gomez as quoted by Reuters.

The findings came after analysing satellite imagery until 2020. The report shows that 2,084 glaciers cover 1,050 square kilometres in Peru, which is less than the 2,399 square kilometres of ice and snow in 1962.

Mejía, who is an expert in glaciology, said there are some mountain ranges in Peru where glaciers have almost disappeared, namely Chila. As per the report, Chila has lost 99 per cent of its glacial surface since 1962.

Climate change: Peru has lost 56% of tropical glaciers in last six decades

Archaeologists said on Friday that eight bundles of burial goods estimated to be around a millennium old were discovered by Peruvian laborers during the installation of a gas pipeline in Lima, the country's capital. They speculated that the site was probably a children's graveyard.

Archaeologists in Peru have discovered eight burial bundles, some 800 years old, six of them of children, during the installation of gas pipes in a neighbourhood in the capital city of Lima.

The archaeologists were called to the scene two weeks ago when workers from the gas company Calidda were excavating in the Carabayllo district, located north of the city of Lima. Six of the bundles were found around 100 metres away from the previous discovery of 28 graves. The researchers also recovered some pottery and other ceramic artefacts at the scene as well.

Cause of death

The findings suggest that the place may have been a cemetery for children who died from severe anaemia resulting from a climate event that would have hit local agriculture, back in the day.

"Nutritional stress might have caused the children's mortality rate, explaining why we found more burials of infants in these cemeteries," said Jesus Bahamonde Schreiber, an archaeologist hired by Calidda.

"During that time there must have been some kind of social activity that generated some kind of problem, perhaps alimentary, which caused the child mortality rate to rise and that's why we find more child burials in these cemeteries."
