<p>The debut by Sabato de Sarno in Milan on Friday was a relatively low-key affair but gave a boost to the share price of French parent company Kering, which has been struggling lately to keep up with its major rival, LVMH.<br />
The first day of Paris Fashion Week always focuses on emerging designers and there was excitement this year about avant-garde newcomer Marie Adam-Leenaerdt from Belgium, who brought a dash of much-needed humour to the opening show.&nbsp;</p>

<p>It opened with a chorus singing "Let's go to the beach!" only to follow it with a series of decidedly un-beachy grey, formal and structured outfits before introducing some more summery Barbie pink and sky-blue dresses.</p>

<p>"There's something very Belgian about it," the 27-year-old designer told AFP backstage. "It's important for me to play with the codes and have some paradoxes."</p>

<p>Also showing on Monday was Victor Weinsanto, a former classical dancer who trained in fashion with Jean Paul Gaultier and loves to bring cabaret to the catwalk.</p>

<p>There were doses of humour -- opening with an extravagant wedding gown that he said was designed for "a woman who gets married entirely in Swarovski".&nbsp;<br />
But he also showed a more serious side, with structured and chic pieces alongside more offbeat items like hooded suit jackets.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Far from a newcomer, but long absent from the official line-up in Paris, is Pierre Cardin, which returned to the catwalk for the first time in 25 years last season and was back with a glamorous show on Monday night.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The label's founder died in 2020 and his nephew Rodrigo Basilicati-Cardin is currently in charge but is embroiled in a bitter succession dispute with family members who have accused each other of fraud and other crimes.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Turning the lake of the Palace of Versailles&nbsp;into a fashion front row, French house Jacquemus brought the most luxurious show of the season to Paris on Monday. Inspired by Princess Diana and Marie Antoinette, French designer Simon Porte Jacquemus's new collection&nbsp;was unveiled on a long red podium installed on the grass at the royal site southwest of the capital.&nbsp;True to his taste for independence, Jacquemus held his all-gender show just a day after the official Paris Men's Fashion Week had concluded.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The collection was called&nbsp;"Le Chouchou", which translates to, "darling" but can also mean scrunchy hair ties in reference to some of the puffy&nbsp;dresses worn by the likes of supermodel Kendell Jenner on the runway.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Supermodel Gigi Hadid was among those on the catwalk. Looking all things stunning, the diva strutted down the runway in a light, transparent lace outfit that screamed sensual glamour.&nbsp;After the show, she circled the lake in a cart, provoking cheers from fashionistas watching from behind barriers.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Hadid's sleeveless white lace sheer dress featured floral embroidery, which exposed her bikini-style top and bottom that was layered underneath.&nbsp;She paired it with white mules and lace knee-high socks. Her heels gave a nod to ballet shoes since they featured structural square toes.&nbsp;</p>

<p>All eyes were on Troye Sivan as he entered the venue of the Loewe Menswear Spring/Summer 2024 show on Saturday at Paris Fashion Week in France. The 28-year-old Australian singer-turned-actor decided to go pants-free for the fashion show and put up a leggy display in a barely-there yellow t-shirt/hoodie.</p>

<p>Dior put on an austere sci-fi spectacle at Paris Fashion Week on Friday that wowed the audience with models rising unexpectedly out of hidden trapdoors. Despite the impressive gimmick, Dior's creative director Kim Jones told AFP the stark, metallic set design was aimed at putting the focus on the outfits — not always the case in the publicity-hungry world of high fashion.</p>

<p>"The thing about what I do is that they are always real clothes. I really think about what the customer wants," Jones told AFP at Dior's showroom next to the Arc de Triomphe.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Dior has increasingly been the yin to the yang of its poppier LVMH stablemate Louis Vuitton.&nbsp;The contrast was again striking after the debut earlier this week of Pharrell Williams as Louis Vuitton designer, which turned the historic Pont Neuf into an open-air club, and was more concert than catwalk.</p>

<p>Jones previously ran menswear at Louis Vuitton himself and helped pioneer the blend of luxury and streetwear that has driven huge growth at the brand.&nbsp;</p>

<p>But now at Dior, he focuses on the house's fabled past, and his new collection drew heavily on its famous "cannage" crosshatch pattern along with leopard prints from the days when Yves Saint Laurent was a creative director in the late 1950s.</p>

<p>"I wanted to go back to what Dior was, the New Look but seen via the New Wave with a punky edge to it, turning the leopard print from Saint Laurent into something that could be a revolutionary's vest or something," said Jones.</p>

<p>He says the back catalogue is an endless source of inspiration.</p>

<p>"You can look at a couple of couture pieces and pull out enough for a whole season. That's the magic of it. It was actually very masculine in the fabrics that (Dior) used. The way the patterns were done was very interesting," he said.</p>

<h2><strong>A bit of shopping</strong></h2>

<p>The interview was briefly interrupted by the appearance of Hollywood star Demi Moore, a close friend whom he referred to as "my wife", along with her tiny chihuahua Pilaf in a pouch on her front — designed, naturally, by Jones.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Moore famously walked the runway in 2021 for Fendi, whereas Jones has another job as a womenswear and couture director.</p>

<p>Jones, 49, said he was also slightly distracted by a redesign at his London home -- printouts showed works by Francis Bacon and Lucian Freud on his walls, along with a pile of first editions by Virginia Woolf and her handbag, evidence of his long-standing obsession with the Bloomsbury Group.&nbsp;</p>

<p>He was also checking out an Old Masters auction at Christie's: "Just doing a bit of shopping," he quipped.</p>

"I wanted to go back to what Dior was, the New Look but seen via the New Wave with a punky edge to it, turning the leopard print from Saint Laurent into something that could be a revolutionary's vest or something," said Jones. He says the back catalogue is an endless source of inspiration. "You can look at a couple of couture pieces and pull out enough for a whole season. That's the magic of it. It was actually very masculine in the fabrics that (Dior) used. The way the patterns were done was very interesting," he said. Sci-fi Dior show boldly puts focus on 'real clothes'

<p>The debut of multi-talented star Pharrell Williams at Louis Vuitton is the hottest ticket at Paris Fashion Week as it kicks off on Tuesday, seen as a significant moment in the evolution of the multi-billion-dollar industry.</p>

<p>The renowned musician, DJ and producer takes over as artistic director for the fabled French brand, hoping to build on the shift towards US streetwear that helped it achieve more than 20 billion euros ($22 billion) in revenue for the first time last year.</p>

<p>Williams offered a teaser on social media, sharing a photo of himself in front of the Orsay Museum featuring a giant billboard of singer Rihanna, heavily pregnant and sporting some colourful LV bags.</p>

<p>"It's unprecedented for a label at this level -- a designer arriving with a first menswear campaign that features a woman... He is giving us an early taste," said Pierre Alexandre M'Pele, editor of GQ France.</p>

<p>The 50-year-old faces a major challenge filling the shoes of Virgil Abloh, the former Kanye West sidekick who breathed new streetwear-infused life into Louis Vuitton prior to his tragic&nbsp;early death due to cancer in 2021.</p>

<p>But Williams has long been a red carpet sensation, known for daring outfits that go far beyond the usual hip-hop stylings, and a string of collaborations with Chanel, Moncler and Tiffany -- as well as Louis Vuitton.</p>

<p>"Williams has been living in hip-hop, and looking into the future, for more than 20 years, a valuable perspective for a luxury men's wear world that has already absorbed hip-hop and is hoping to divine what might come next," the New York Times wrote after his appointment.</p>

<h2>- 'Much more creative' -</h2>

<p>Williams's arrival comes at a time when men's fashion feels like the more exciting side of the industry.</p>

<p>"Men's fashion took years to find fertile ground for evolution, but it's now doing so more visibly than womenswear," said fashion consultant Pascaline Wilhelm.</p>

<p>"The way gender, masculinity and femininity are being called into question at the moment allows it to be much more creative without falling into caricature," she added.</p>

<p>One of the newcomers making a mark is Burc Akyol, a French-Turkish designer who is joining the official fashion week for the first time, showing just before Williams on Tuesday.</p>

<p>His label, formed in 2018 after apprenticeships with Dior and Balenciaga, has already attracted the support of Cate Blanchett and Cardi B with his elegant, non-gendered style.</p>

<p>"There are several talents in Paris who are following this idea of non-gendered fashion. Or at least, the clothes are not gendered," said M'Pelé.</p>

<p>Not that this should be seen as entirely a modern phenomenon, he added. "Several centuries ago, men wore dresses and high heels."</p>

<p>One big name that is not returning this week is Saint Laurent.</p>

<p>Its artistic director Anthony Vaccarello made a surprise appearance at the last menswear week in Paris for the first time but has preferred to stay away from the big fashion showcases and give one-off shows in places like Berlin, Malibu and Venice.</p>

<p>Celine's designer Hedi Slimane, considered one of the most influential names in menswear, also likes to follow his own rhythm, and is holding his next Paris catwalk show a couple of weeks after everyone else on July 3.</p>

<p>"My goal is to manage the label and bring it on track," he said, speaking to journalists after the show as he greeted guests including French singer Mireille Mathieu.</p>

<p>Earthy scents pricked guests’ noses as they entered the venue for Stella McCartney: A Manege. Shivers from the cold were quickly succeeded by gasps when seven horses suddenly galloped in from a side door followed by an exuberant handler.</p>

<p>The show that incorporated equestrian themes was a visual and sensory statement from McCartney, a prominent animal rights campaigner.</p>

<p>Here are some highlights of the Paris Fashion Week shows Monday:</p>

<p><strong>MCCARTNEY’S SOFTNESS AND HARDNESS</strong></p>

<p>Vibrant designs showcased on the brown manege sand drew inspiration not only from horses -- with equine motifs, horse blanket patination inspiring wool looks and marbled patterns resembling horses’ coats — but also from the world of show jumping.</p>

<p>McCartney used the sport’s pomp and regalia to inspire a collection that harked to her tailoring background.</p>

<p>A double-breasted jacket had sharp shoulders nipped above the waist with a diagonal dynamic, mixing masculine and feminine. Takes on regalia and the military included a men’s white lilac tailored show jumping jacket.</p>

<p>The sense of “softness and a hardness, of male versus female,” a touchstone of the LVMH-owned fashion house, was captured also by the horses themselves, McCartney said.</p>

<p>Bags used vegan leather alternatives, such as MIRUM, a plant-based technology, AppleSkin, an apple-based material that creates a crocodile effect.</p>

<p>This was an optimistic collection — with flashes of eye-popping citrine and vermillion — that never lectured but celebrated living in harmony.</p>

<p>“Have you even seen a wild horse at a fashion show or a whisperer?” McCartney asked the stunned fashion press on a crowded balcony above the manege that still smelled of horse. She said organizers called her “crazy” for attempting to get wild horses to a show.</p>

<p>Yet McCartney said fall-winter in particular seemed a good time to highlight cruelty-free designs with the unique spectacle of wild animals living, breathing and playing together.</p>

<p>“I really wanted to make a connection with our fellow creatures because there is so much leather and fur and feathers on the runway, especially in winter,” McCartney told Associated Press. “I wanted to show that you can do (fashion) in a different way you don’t need to kill anything and it can be (just) as luxurious.”</p>

<p>McCartney said the horses had many personal meanings to her, from the photography of her mother Linda and sister Mary to “being British,” speaking to the love for horses that runs deep in the UK.</p>

<p>She said the message of the horses “is that they’re alive and the clothes haven’t killed anything so there’s a kind of celebration of everything living in harmony with one another.”</p>

<p>The horse handler was a star of the show. McCartney said she first saw him at a London horse show and was impressed with his work. “They are his wild horses. He doesn’t use any bridles, any saddles and he’s a horse whisperer ... They’re his little babies,” she said. “I can’t even get my dog to do that.”</p>

<p><strong>AZ FACTORY</strong></p>

<p>There’s still a bitter-sweet tinge at AZ Factory shows. The brand was created by designer Alber Elbaz just before his 2021 death from COVID.</p>

<p>Elbaz, still reeling from his ouster as a longtime Lanvin designer, had wanted to make a brand touting a new way of doing luxury – easier on designers, body positive, and more affordable. AZ Factory was just that. Since his death, guest designers have moonlighted for the brand, remaining faithful to its ethos, and Elbaz is still felt in the house spirit.</p>

<p>On Monday, ruffles, toggles, belts and ties brought a utilitarian dimension to the soft ready-to-wear designs. There was a sense of relaxation running throughout as the models walked nonchalantly in low-key platform sandals.</p>

<p>A furry coat with a swirling pink motif and inbuilt scarf became a total look, covering the model completely with ankle warmers in the same material. It was fun and tactile.</p>

The brand was created by designer Alber Elbaz just before his 2021 death from COVID. Elbaz, still reeling from his ouster as a longtime Lanvin designer, had wanted to make a brand touting a new way of doing luxury – easier on designers, body positive, and more affordable. AZ Factory was just that. Since his death, guest designers have moonlighted for the brand, remaining faithful to its ethos, and Elbaz is still felt in the house spirit. On Monday, ruffles, toggles, belts and ties brought a utilitarian dimension to the soft ready-to-wear designs. There was a sense of relaxation running throughout as the models walked nonchalantly in low-key platform sandals. A furry coat with a swirling pink motif and inbuilt scarf became a total look, covering the model completely with ankle warmers in the same material. It was fun and tactile.

<p>Models marched down the sparse setting, a hallway in the Palais de Tokyo contemporary art museum, wearing jumpsuits, long coats and dresses in tweed fabrics, mostly black or ivory and woven with gold thread. The show opened with a black, sleeveless jumpsuit cinched at the waist with a gold belt, and worn over a white t-shirt.</p>

<p>Further shaking the fabric from its traditional twin-set role, Valli worked the material into long overcoats, loose jackets, mini-dresses and a bright, red jumpsuit.</p>

<p>There were also white jeans, the hems chopped off, paired with a glittering floral sequined top in one instance, and a long, collarless tweed coat in another -- both worn by male models.</p>

<p>Fancy party dresses were included in the lineup, offered in bright colors -- hot pink, red and purple -- with neat piles of bows decorating the waist.</p>

<p>Popular with the red carpet set, and known for voluminous, tulle dresses, Valli broadened his fan base with a collaboration with H&amp;M in 2019.</p>

<p>Halsey has another career opportunity if she ever decides to stop making music. The singer recently turned model and walked at Paris Fashion Week. She shared her debut experience as a model with a social media post as she wrote, “I walked PFW for the first time today with @pressiat_ and it was terrifying and amazing!!!! Thank you Vincent for having me, and congratulations to you and the team on such a stunning collection and iconic show! special thanks to @lynalyson_ and blonde slay by @themartyharper and pics by @samdameshek.”</p>

<p>Halsey was seen dressed in a stunning black cutout dress with an asymmetrical animal print by upstart Parisian label Pressiat. The gown came with a matching headwrap. She completed the look with&nbsp;dark, bold makeup -- a dark lipstick&nbsp;and heavy black eyeshadow. She kept the hair tucked in a messy bun inside the headwrap with hair flyaways to frame her face.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Kylie Jenner made heads turn at Schiaparelli's couture runway during Paris Fashion Week as she arrived, in a black strapless gown adorned with a hyper-realistic faux lion's head brooch, to see the label's Spring-Summer 2023 couture collection.</p>

<p>The 25-year-old's chic figure-hugging black velvet dress looked perfect with the huge stuffed accessory as she headed to the venue this Monday.</p>

<p>For her footwear, she opted for statement gold heels and paired them with a snakeskin gold handbag.</p>

<p>Meanwhile, on the runway, Naomi Campbell flaunted a black faux fur coat with a wolf's head emerging from her left shoulder. Canadian model Shalom Harlow donned a strapless snow leopard tube dress with a roaring feline head bursting through the bust.</p>

<p>According to the show notes, the collection was inspired by Dante's "Inferno" and the nine circles of hell, which is actually a metaphor for the doubt and creative torment most artists experience. The collection literally draws from the three beasts that appear in the 14th-century poem. Creative director Daniel Roseberry reimagined the leopard, the lion and the she-wolf in the collection and left everyone stunned.</p>

<p>American singer and rapper Doja Cat, who has delivered several chartbusters like 'Kiss Me More', 'Woman', 'Need to Know', and 'No Police' among others, flaunted her impeccable, other-worldly and unique fashion sense in Paris on Monday.</p>

<p>Covered in red paint, glitter, and over 30,000 blood-red Swarovski crystals, the Grammy Award winner arrived for the Schiaparelli Haute Couture show during Paris Fashion Week and grabbed eyeballs.&nbsp;</p>

<p>To match her gorgeous red strapless Schiaparelli Haute Couture dress which featured a hand-knitted skirt with lacquered wooden beads and a red silk faille bustier, the singer-rapper ensured that her entire head, face, chest and arms were artfully bedazzled in red. And, the results were jaw-droppingly amazing.</p>

<p>According to a post featured on the official Schiaparelli Instagram account, Doja paired her ensemble with&nbsp;Trompe lœil knee-high boots. To accessorise, she opted for&nbsp;a dramatic wrap along with&nbsp;giant gem earrings in the same scarlet shade.</p>

She called the look -&nbsp;"Doja's Inferno", which is partly inspired by Dante's "Inferno", according to a press release.
