<p>The collection presented on Friday was inspired by sculpture, with three-dimensional silhouettes made with a single piece of fabric and prints created from clay shapes applied by hand to the fabric to provide relief and texture.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Victoria is not from the fashion world. She threw herself into the business and at a certain point, she needed to structure, organise and bring some order to the house, which is what we've been doing for the past four years," Toledano told AFP.&nbsp;</p>

<p>But a successful cosmetics line, launched in 2019, has helped trim losses, and the team hopes to break even in the coming months.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Beckham has called her personal fame a "double-edged sword" for the business.</p>

<p>"Are other brands under the scrutiny that mine is under every time we file (results)? Absolutely not," she told Vogue.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Thirty percent of our sales have been for menswear in the last collections -- we're not at 50/50 but we do quite a bit of men's and we have no intention of doing less," Serre told AFP after the show.</p>

<p>French designer Olivier Rousteing admitted he felt uncomfortable presenting his latest collection for Balmain at Paris Fashion Week on Wednesday in view of the war in Ukraine.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"It's hard to feel right about focusing on runways and clothes, as we listen with a heavy heart to the latest news," Rousteing wrote to his 7.6 million followers on Instagram.&nbsp;</p>

<p>He used a desert scene in the yellow-and-blue of Ukraine for the image.&nbsp; "Our thoughts and prayers are with the Ukrainians. We are inspired by their dignity, resilience and devotion to freedom," he added.&nbsp;</p>

<p>When he unveiled his collection later in Paris, it was striking how many outfits seemed to reflect the wartime atmosphere, even though it was naturally conceived long before the war in Ukraine began.&nbsp;</p>

<p>There were padded corsets, tops and gloves that strongly resembled futuristic body armour, while others were kitted out in golden shields.&nbsp;</p>

<p>That matched a similar focus on protective clothing at Dior's show a day earlier -- where shoulder pads, airbag corsets and items that looked distinctly like bulletproof vests -- were part of a focus on "protection".&nbsp;</p>

<p>It marks a notable shift away from the more glamorous styles that dominated last year's collections, when the focus had been on hopes of emerging out of the pandemic.&nbsp;</p>

<p>There was still plenty of the traditional glitz at the Balmain event, with celebrities including Serena Williams, Jean Paul Gaultier and Brazilian footballer Neymar in attendance.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The industry is determined to get back on the catwalks after nearly two years during which most brands were forced to retreat online.</p>

<p>Despite the complications caused by the pandemic, the fashion community is stepping out regardless. Most fashion houses are returning to live shows as the menswear week kicks off, followed immediately by haute couture shows.</p>

<p>Some 17 of the 76 brands of the official Paris menswear calendar -- including big names like Dior, Hermes, and Rick Owens -- will be back on the catwalk, up from just six last summer. Nearly 30 others are opting for other types of in-person events -- inviting journalists, buyers, and other taste-makers to less formal gatherings around the French capital.</p>

<p>There will be a bittersweet taste to the first week, however, as Louis Vuitton presents the final collection from US designer Virgil Abloh, who died in November at the age of 41 after a private battle with cancer.</p>

<p>Such is the interest around Abloh, a close partner of Kanye West who helped break through glass ceilings for black designers, that Louis Vuitton is presenting the show twice on Thursday.</p>

<p>Many are also excited to see what streetwear veteran Nigo does as the new artistic director of Kenzo. And there is hype, too, around French label Egonlab, launched two years ago with a series of arty videos and now making its first foray in the official calendar.</p>

<p>"To present your work alongside the big houses that greatly influenced us -- it does something to you," said co-founder Florentin Glemarec.</p>

<p>Nonetheless, like many fashion newcomers, Egonlab is embracing both the live and online worlds, with a line of NFTs and Metaverse digital clothing that it is developing in partnership with footwear brand Crocs.</p>

<p>'Caught in the crossfire'</p>
