The WFP continues to call for an end to the blockade of Gaza and for greater access for humanitarian organizations in the West Bank. Families in Gaza and the West Bank, where food insecurity and poverty are at their worst levels, are the most affected.

Al-Khatib told Reuters, how they asked that Adnan be moved to a civilian hospital to be “properly monitored,” but their demand was “met by intransigence and rejection”. &nbsp;

Meanwhile, a Palestinian gunman opened fire at Israeli vehicles and injured one person who was driving near the West Bank’s Avnei Hefetz, on Tuesday. The 39-year-old Israeli man travelling in one of the vehicles was lightly injured by glass shards, said the Israeli ambulance service&nbsp;Magen David Adom. The incident took place hours after Adnan’s death, however, no group or individual had immediately claimed responsibility for the attack.&nbsp;

The IDF, in an earlier statement, said that sirens were sounded across areas surrounding the Gaza Strip after several rocket launches. The Israeli military said at least three rockets were fired from Gaza in the hours after Adnan's death and a further 26 were launched later in the afternoon.&nbsp;

According to media reports citing officials, two rockets landed in the southern city of Sderot which injured three foreign nationals, including a 25-year-old who was seriously wounded. As of late Tuesday, the IDF has confirmed that rockets fired from Gaza have hit multiple locations in southern Israel, including Kissufim and areas of Sderot.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu held a meeting with security officials after the IDF said they were investigating how two rockets had penetrated their Iron Dome air defence system.&nbsp;

In a recent statement, Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant said he has completed several “operational situation assessments” after the rocket fire from Gaza Strip&nbsp;and the security forces will “act with determination” to defend their citizens.&nbsp;

Reports of rockets being fired also came hours after Syrian state media reported that Israel launched airstrikes targeting north Syria’s Aleppo province late Monday.&nbsp;The report citing a military source also said that seven people, including two civilians, were injured, and the supposed strike had since put the Aleppo international airport out of service.&nbsp;

Nearly 40 rockets fired from Gaza after Palestinian hunger striker dies in Israeli custody; Israel retaliates

According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), a United Kingdom-based monitor in the region, on Monday (April 24) the Israeli army shelled a position belonging to a pro-Iran group, Hezbollah, in southern Syria near the Israel-occupied Golan Heights.&nbsp;

In a separate incident, a Palestinian health ministry official said Israeli troops killed a Palestinian man during a West Bank raid, in what the Israeli army has described as a “counterterrorism” operation.&nbsp;

Israel bombs targets in Syria

The SOHR said that the Israeli forces bombed a target supposedly belonging to the Iran-backed Hezbollah group in southern Syria near Golan Heights. The location is said to be on the outskirts of Quneitra where fighters from the Syrian Resistance to Liberate the Golan are located. However, the group did not report any casualties.&nbsp;

Citing Syrian media reports, the Israeli media said that the bombardment took place early Monday morning after which the Israel Defense Forces reportedly dropped threatening pamphlets in the area. The flyers supposedly warned Syrian soldiers to stop cooperating with Hezbollah.&nbsp;

According to an opposition-affiliated journalist, as per Times of Israel, flyers were dropped in the area, in which the military appeared to take responsibility for the overnight strike. However, the IDF is yet to comment on the matter but it does not typically, publicly acknowledge carrying out strikes in Syria.&nbsp;

“We are closely watching and aware of the ongoing intelligence cooperation with Hezbollah within the Syrian army’s positions in the region, including near the Israeli border. Your cooperation with Hezbollah has…brought you more harm than benefit. Cooperation with Hezbollah leads to harm!” the flyer read, as quoted by the Times of Israel. &nbsp;

The Palestinian health ministry official said that a 20-year-old, Suleiman Ayash was “killed by the occupation (Israeli) bullets, in Aqabat Jaber camp,” near Jericho, reported news agency AFP. Meanwhile, the Israeli army has said that the soldiers had shot at suspected militants who fled arrest.&nbsp;

In a statement, Israel said, “During the activity, two suspects were spotted fleeing the scene. The soldiers responded with live fire. Hits were identified.” However, they did not disclose why the two Palestinians were targeted. According to the Palestinian Prisoners Club, an advocacy group, Israeli forces carried out 30 arrests in the West Bank overnight and early on Monday.

Jericho governor Jihad Abu al-Assal told AFP that Ayash’s body was being held by the Israeli military. A report by the official Palestinian news agency WAFA quoted the governor of Jericho as saying that a man was fatally shot and three others wounded by the troops.&nbsp;

The Madrid Conference was apparently a diplomatic push by the United States amid an intensive Israel-Palestine fight. It was an unprecedented event as the conference saw the presence of all parties in the Arab-Israeli conflict.&nbsp;

However, according to other accounts, the date of the conclusion of the first Intifada was somewhere in 1993 with the signing of the Oslo Accords, a peace process that was kicked off between Israel and the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO).&nbsp;

The second intifada which is know by the name Al-Aqṣā intifada started in September 2000. As per several estimates, the second intifada went on till 2005. The uprisings saw the death of over 5,000 Palestinians and about 1,400 Israelis.

After a deadly Israeli raid, the spokesperson for Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas reportedly said that the Palestinians are ending their security arrangement with Israel in the occupied West Bank.&nbsp;Saudi Arabia, a staunch supporter of the Palestinian cause, rebuked Israeli forces for the raids in the West Bank. This brings back the memories of the intensive&nbsp;Arab-Israel conflicts that inflicted Israel and Palestine for decades.

After the&nbsp;Intifada,&nbsp;Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin and Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) Negotiator Mahmoud Abbas had signed an accord which resulted in the recognition of PLO by Israel.&nbsp;The first Oslo Accords was signed in Washington, US in 1993 while the signing of the second accord took place in Taba, Egypt, in 1995. The name of the Accords was given the basis of the place of the peace negotiations that took place in Oslo, Norway.

Now, as Israel and Palestine possibly stand on the cusp of another intifada amid the&nbsp;fresh clashes, US state secretary Antony Blinken will travel to Israel next week and is expected to call for a truce. Biden had earlier called upon both Israel and Palestine to settle their dispute through diplomatic channels. All of this comes back like a deja vu from the time when Bill Clinton's administration was playing a diplomatic role in settling the Israel-Palestine issue.&nbsp;

Palestinian medic Mahmoud Aidi said that attempts were made by first responders to reach the scene but there was "a strong army presence concentrated on the hill, and we weren't permitted to reach the person killed".&nbsp;

In the latest outbreak of violence near Jerusalem's al-Aqsa mosque, which is revered by Muslims and Jews alike, Israeli police fired rubber bullets and stun grenades at Palestinian youngsters throwing rocks.

At least 42 Palestinians were hurt in early morning confrontations on Friday at Islam's third holiest shrine, according to the Palestine Red Crescent.

When hundreds of people began throwing rocks and pyrotechnics, especially in the direction of the Western Wall, where Jewish worshippers gather, Israeli police said they intervened.

"We will continue to act decisively against rioters and outlaws for the public safety and security," police said in a statement.

There were almost daily confrontations at the mosque this month when Ramadan overlapped with the Jewish celebration of Passover, which brought hundreds of thousands of Muslims and Jews to the heavily policed site in the old city.

The violence had subsided this week following the end of Passover and Israel's suspension of Jewish visits to the massive esplanade, which houses the golden seventh-century Dome of the Rock and the eighth-century al-Aqsa mosque.

The compound is the holiest site in Judaism and contains the ruins of two ancient Jewish temples.

Ramadan will end next week, and massive crowds are expected at al-Aqsa mosque on the final Friday of the fasting month.

Officials in Israel have blamed this month's tensions on Islamist groups, particularly Hamas, which administers the Palestinian enclave of Gaza, for encouraging teenagers to create disturbances in order to incite Muslim world fury against Israel.

"For the past hour, the site has been quiet and (Muslim) worshippers are safely entering (the compound)" police said.

"The re-opening of the&nbsp;crossing&nbsp;will be decided in accordance with a security situational assessment," COGAT added.

Employment in&nbsp;Israel&nbsp;is a lifeline for people in Gaza, where according to a recent World Bank report nearly half of the 2.3 million population is unemployed.

There are currently 12,000&nbsp;Gazans&nbsp;with work permits in&nbsp;Israel, with the government recently announcing its intention to add another 8,000.

Incitement

More than 200 people, mostly Palestinians, have been hurt in clashes in and around Al-Aqsa in the past week.

Palestinians have been outraged by massive Israeli police deployment and repeated visits by Jews to the holy site.

Early on Friday, the Palestinian Red Crescent said 57 people were wounded&nbsp;after&nbsp;police stormed the compound in Israeli-annexed east Jerusalem's Old City when Palestinians began hurling stones towards the Western Wall, the holiest site where Jews can pray.

And&nbsp;after&nbsp;midday prayers, some Muslim worshippers chanted "incitement" and tried to damage a police post, police said, using a drone to spray tear gas from the air, AFP reporters said.

Saturday morning prayers, however, passed without incident, with Israeli officials estimating that 16,000 Muslims participated.

Al-Aqsa is Islam's third-holiest site, and the most sacred site in Judaism where it is known as the Temple Mount.

By long-standing convention, Jews are allowed to visit under certain conditions but are not allowed to pray there.

The escalating unrest prompted concern at the United Nations, which on Thursday demanded a probe into the Israeli police actions.

"The use of force by Israeli police resulting in widespread injuries among worshippers and staff in and around the Al-Aqsa mosque compound must be promptly, impartially, independently and transparently investigated," said Ravina Shamdasani, spokeswoman for the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights.

Israel&nbsp;is braced for more violence, however.

The unrest in Jerusalem stirred emotions among&nbsp;Israel's Arab population, with hundreds marching in the Arab-Israeli city of Umm al-Fahm in support of Al-Aqsa mosque.

Skirmishes at the end of the march evoked images from last year's conflict with Gaza that saw rioting in Arab cities within&nbsp;Israel.

Police said on Saturday they had arrested four masked men in Umm al-Fahm who had "tried to block the entry to the city, fired flares, threw stones at forces and burnt tyres on the main road".

When Ghada Sabatien set out to visit her uncle in a village near Bethlehem, she was not expecting to be caught up in the spike in violence between Israelis and&nbsp;Palestinians.

The West Bank village of Husan is usually a quiet backwater, despite being close to a major crossing into Israel.

The shops have signs in both Arabic and Hebrew, and even&nbsp;Israeli&nbsp;settlers regularly stop there to buy groceries, with few tensions.

At the entrance to the village,&nbsp;Israeli&nbsp;soldiers sit guard on a concrete island that serves as a checkpoint.

On April 10, Ghada set out to visit her uncle, wearing a hijab and long gown.

On the way back, the walk took her past the makeshift checkpoint.&nbsp;

As she approached, a&nbsp;soldier&nbsp;fired warning shots and shouted.&nbsp;

Ghada has "eye problems", her family said, adding that she did not speak Hebrew as she had spent years abroad.

In footage caught by a Palestinian TV crew that happened to be filming nearby, she appeared to panic.

But she kept walking. The&nbsp;soldier&nbsp;opened fire at her legs, and she fell to the floor.

It took several minutes for an ambulance to arrive. By the time she reached a hospital in the nearby town of Beit Jala, she had lost catastrophic amounts of blood.

She died in the hospital.

She cannot be replaced

Ghada was not wearing an explosive vest or carrying any kind of weapon.

Her family have been in shock and anger ever since she was killed.

"My sister went there and asked a&nbsp;soldier&nbsp;in Hebrew: 'Did she do anything wrong?'," Ghada's&nbsp;mother&nbsp;Houria Sabatien, 69, told AFP.

"He answered: 'No'. 'So why did you shoot at her?' she asked. The&nbsp;soldier&nbsp;said: 'Sorry'."

Around her sat her grandchildren, four of Ghada's orphans: Omar, Jamila, Mohammed and Moustafa, their eyes glued to the floor.

"They've become orphans. And me, I'm old, I'm afraid for them when they go out, I'm afraid for them because of the army," Houria said.&nbsp;

"I would like to feed them and show them life. But I'm afraid for their future."

Moustafa, 15, is struggling to comprehend the tragedy.

"When I lost my&nbsp;mother, it was as if life no longer had any meaning. She was the one who woke us up in the morning, she was the one who welcomed us back from school, she was the one who took care of us," he said.

"She was everything, she cannot be replaced."

He reminisced about Ghada's delicious maqloubeh, a Palestinian dish of rice and meat, and how she would help with his mathematics homework.

"She made me understand straight away," he said.

Mistake

Born into a family of scientists, Ghada Sabatien graduated with a degree in mathematics at Bethlehem University and spent 15 years in Jordan, where she was a teacher. &nbsp;

After her husband died four years ago, Ghada returned to Husan with the children.&nbsp;

She prepared meals, helped with homework, read the Koran, visited extended family members, and occasionally gave private lessons.

"She was an independent, peaceful, educated woman who was not interested in politics at all," says Rafat, her brother.

He said he had received an apology from the&nbsp;Israeli&nbsp;army for their "mistake".

AFP approached the army for comment on Ghada's killing.

It said she had run "suspiciously" towards the checkpoint and that soldiers had fired at her legs.

"The suspect received initial medical treatment by IDF soldiers at the scene," it said.

In a rare move, Washington's envoy to the&nbsp;Palestinians, George Noll, called the family to express his condolences.&nbsp;

On Saturday, Israeli police said security forces killed three members of the Islamic Jihad militant group who had opened fire during an operation to arrest them near the northern West Bank city of Jenin.

Four Israeli soldiers were wounded, one of them seriously, the police said.

The Israeli forces had intercepted "a terrorist cell on its way to an attack, and stopped the car in which they were travelling between Jenin and Tulkarem", the police said.

The Islamic Jihad, which is based in Gaza, confirmed the "death of our three hero fighters" from the West Bank, identifying them as Saeb Abahra, Khalil Tawalbeh and Seif Abu Labdeh.

Palestinian&nbsp;prime minister Mohammed Shtayyeh said they were slain in an "extrajudicial killing" and "horrible crime".

Israel's leaders "must stop committing crimes and violations against our&nbsp;Palestinian&nbsp;people, respond to their legitimate rights to freedom and independence, end the occupation and establish their independent state with Jerusalem as its capital", he said, quoted by the&nbsp;Palestinian&nbsp;Wafa news agency.

Israeli Foreign Minister Yair Lapid warned in a tweet on Saturday that the security forces would "act forcefully against any attempted attack" on citizens of the Jewish state.

Saturday's clash is the latest in a spate of bloody violence in Israel and the West Bank since March 22.

On Friday, Israeli forces shot dead a 29-year-old&nbsp;Palestinian&nbsp;during confrontations in the West Bank city of Hebron, the&nbsp;Palestinian&nbsp;health ministry said.

Wafa named him as Ahmad al-Atrash, who it said was taking part in a protest against Israeli settlements and had previously served six years in an Israeli prison.

The Israeli army said that during a "riot" in Hebron, "a suspect hurled a Molotov cocktail" at soldiers, who "responded with live fire".

Hebron, the biggest city in the West Bank, is home to about 1,000 Jewish settlers living under heavy Israeli military protection, among more than 200,000 Palestinians.

The&nbsp;Palestinian&nbsp;Red Crescent said 70 people were wounded in Friday's clashes with the Israeli army in the Nablus area of the northern West Bank.

On Thursday, Israeli security forces raided Jenin after three fatal attacks rocked the Jewish state, leading to clashes in which two Palestinians were killed, according to the&nbsp;Palestinian&nbsp;health ministry.

Elsewhere in the West Bank on the same day, a&nbsp;Palestinian&nbsp;man who stabbed and seriously wounded an Israeli civilian with a screwdriver on a bus was shot dead south of the city of Bethlehem.

It followed an attack on Tuesday night in Bnei Brak, an Orthodox Jewish city near Tel Aviv where a&nbsp;Palestinian&nbsp;with an assault rifle killed two Israeli civilians, two Ukrainian nationals and an Arab-Israeli policeman.

A total of 11 people have been killed in attacks in Israel since March 22, including some carried out by assailants linked to or inspired by the Islamic State group.

Over the same period, eight Palestinians have been killed, according to an AFP tally, including two assailants in anti-Israeli attacks and six people the Israelis said had carried out attacks or were about to do so.

The West Bank, which has been occupied by Israeli forces since the 1967 Six-Day war, is home to nearly 500,000 Jewish settlers, living in communities regarded as illegal under international law.

After screenings at festivals in Italy, Tunisia and Egypt, Diab, a 43-year-old filmmaker educated in New York with several awards to his name, had been counting on Jordan, where Amira was filmed, to nominate it to represent the kingdom at the Oscars.

But instead, Jordan has pulled the movie. "We do believe in the artistic value of the film, and that its message doesn’t harm in any way the Palestinian cause nor that of the prisoners; on the contrary, it highlights their plight, their resilience," its Royal Film Commission said.

However, it withdrew the film "in light of the recent huge controversy that the film has triggered and the perception by some that it is detrimental to the Palestinian cause and out of respect to the feelings of the prisoners and their families".

Its subject matter is not uncommon: dozens of children are said to have been born from vials of sperm smuggled out of Israeli jails by released prisoners who manage to evade the scrutiny of army checkpoints.

The method served Lydia Rimawi, a Palestinian in the Israeli-occupied West Bank, to give birth to three children. But she detests the twist in the tale of Diab's "disgusting" movie.

"It's not a movie such as Amira that will make us bend: nobody on Earth can make us bow our head," she wrote angrily on Facebook.

&nbsp;'Pull Out Amira' -

Under the hashtag #Pull Out Amira, social media has been awash with criticism of Diab's work.

"This film insults Palestinian prisoners without ever mentioning the suffering of hundreds of prisoners' families," Reem Jihad tweeted.

Diab, whose movie ends with a disclaimer that more than 100 children have been confirmed as offspring of Palestinian prisoners through sperm smuggling, has called for a "spectator committee made up of prisoners and relatives to watch and discuss" Amira.

He insists the film was not meant to "insult the prisoners or the Palestinian cause in any way". But the Palestinian Prisoners' Club, which represents more than 4,500 Palestinians held behind bars by Israel, remains adamant.

"We've watched the film from A to Z and, after many sessions to observe the details, we reject it in its entirety," said its head, Qaddura Fares.

For Hamas, the Islamist movement that runs Gaza and which has hundreds of its members locked up by the Jewish state, the film is nothing more than a "service to the Zionist enemy".

Amira was financed by Egypt, Jordan, the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia. The main actors are Jordanian, with other roles played by Arab Israelis.

In the face of the outcry, Saudi Arabia has pulled the movie from its first Red Sea Film Festival which opened on Monday.

Six Palestinian prisoners who made a daring escaping from an Israeli prison in September were formally indicted Sunday, Israel's justice ministry said.

The men were charged with escaping from the high-security Gilboa prison in northern Israel while five others were accused of assisting them, a statement said.

The inmates,&nbsp;five from the Palestinian Islamic Jihad militant group and one belonging to the armed branch of the Palestinian Authority's Fatah faction, had been held for attacks against Israel.

They escaped by digging a tunnel under a sink.

One of them, Mahmud Abdullah Ardah, said after he was recaptured that he had used spoons, plates and even the handle of a kettle to dig the tunnel.

The six -- hailed as heroes by Palestinians -- were recaptured in batches during a major Israeli manhunt in September.

In addition to Ardah, an Islamic Jihad member and the alleged mastermind of the escape, they include Zakaria Zubeidi who headed the Fatah armed wing.

The other four are Ayham Kamamji, Munadel Infeiat, Yaqub Qadri and Mohammad Ardah.

Lawyers for two of the prisoners said they had begun to dig the tunnel in December.

A 17-year-old boy was earlier killed on Saturday in the Palestinian village of Beita as Israeli troops opened fire. On Tuesday, a 41-year-old Palestinian was shot dead, also near Beita.

Israeli warplanes had struck Gaza last weekend after incendiary balloons reportedly launched from the Palestinian enclave caused fires in Israel.

Reports claimed the strikes were aimed at northern Gaza and at a militant training base. Israeli fighters had carried out daily attacks in May during the 11-day conflict with Hamas in Gaza as the militant organization fired thousands of rockets at Israel.

Clashes had erupted between Israeli police and Palestinians at Al Aqsa mosque a fortnight ago as Palestinian officials said police forcefully evacuated Muslim worshippers to clear the way for Jewish visitors.
