"Pakistan is perturbed over this but the most astonishing thing I got to hear, the people residing near the Line of Control (LoC) in PoK raised slogans, 'Ask Modi (Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi) to get us freedom from Pakistan's illegal occupation!' and save our souls, we are dying of hunger, please come here and help us out',” he said.

He further slammed Pakistan for systematically exploiting the region's resources, adopting wrong policies in the establishment and letting corruption seep into the system.

The citizens in PoK are fed up with the miseries which they have faced in the last several decades under the misrule of Pakistan. They appealed for help from India which has become their beacon of hope amidst their economic struggle.

Kashmiris claim that Pakistan's government has consistently treated the people living in Gilgit Baltistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir as second-class citizens, in contrast to Punjab, which remains a favoured province.

In 1947, PoK was illegally occupied by Pakistan. Since then, the residents have appealed for international intervention to regain their freedom.

Social media video shows anti-Pakistan protest in PoK, threats of merger with India: Reports

Pakistan Occupied Kashmir's (PoK) High Court bench on Tuesday disqualified Prime Minister Sardar Tanveer Ilyas from the legislative assembly for contempt of court.

After the court's verdict, Ilyas won't be holding the office of PoK's prime minister and a new premier will be elected by the legislative assembly.

The courts of PoK had on Monday served separate notices to Ilyas asking him to explain his position over his “derogatory remarks about the superior judiciary in his speeches at public meetings”.

The notices, which were served through the PM's principal secretary, asked Ilyas to make separate appearances before the Supreme Court and the high court on Tuesday.

During a function held in Islamabad, Ilyas had indirectly held the judiciary responsible for affecting his government's functioning and interfering in the executive's domain through the grant of stay orders.

Ilyas had made a particular reference to a $15 million Saudi-funded education sector project, stating that it was in limbo because a stay order was issued on it by the court.

He also took strong exception to the “de-sealing by the courts of tobacco factories involved in tax evasion to the tune of billions of rupees”.

The high court's judgement was read out on Tuesday by Justice Chaudhry Khalid Rasheed, sentencing the PoK premier till the rising of the court.

After the announcement of the court's verdict, Ilyas - who was supposed to make an appearance before the Supreme Court – went to the Prime Minister’s House accompanied by the cabinet members.

Speaking on the court's verdict, PTI leader Fawad Chaudhry said that whether it was Pakistan's prime minister or that of PoK, respecting the court's decision was necessary.

“This country cannot be run by destroying the judicial system,” he stated, appealing to Ilyas to apologise and stating that he hoped the Supreme Court would give him relief.

He added that Pakistan's Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif should learn a lesson from the court's verdict.

Presenting the clip of the prime minister's speech in the court's order, the PoK court said that a discussion was held on the matter by the judges’ council “in view of its seriousness” and it was unanimously decided “it could not be overlooked because the dignity and authority of the courts was on stake and nobody could be allowed to undermine it”.

“However, […] before issuing contempt notice we are intended to ask the prime minister to appear in person and explain his position on the referred news,” the court stated. Identical observations were made by the high court.

“Prime Minister Tanveer Ilyas has directly threatened the superior judiciary and the language of his speech at a public meeting is highly derogatory, improper and indecently worded,” the order stated.

Not just the latest statement, but his “previous track record from several months is [also] objectionable, unbecoming and improper,” it further stated.

The order read that the high court judges’ council unanimously decided not to leave the matter unattended “simply by shutting [its] eye from contemptuous and derogatory statement of the person who is at the helm of affairs.”

“By showing magnanimity and judicial restraint, we have opted, in the beginning of the proceedings, to serve a notice on the prime minister to personally appear before the full court to explain his position,” it added.

Pakistan Occupied Kashmir's (PoK) High Court bench on Tuesday disqualified Prime Minister Sardar Tanveer Ilyas from the legislative assembly for contempt of court.

ALSO READ | Jammu and Kashmir’s budget twice the size of Pakistan’s IMF bailout request, documents show The notices, which were served through the PM's principal secretary, asked Ilyas to make separate appearances before the Supreme Court and the high court on Tuesday. High Court disqualifies PoK PM Sardar Tanveer Ilyas for contempt of court

The Pakistan Occupied Kashmir's assembly has supported the Indian Home Minister Amit Shah's proposal for the opening of Sharda Peeth Corridor.

On March 29, Awami Muslim League led by Sheikh Rashid proposed in the PoK assembly that a corridor should be built for Kashmiri Pandits to visit Mata Sharda's temple.

The PoK government has suggested that Kashmiri Pandits and Hindus living in India should be allowed to visit the historic Sharda Peeth temple situated in Pakistan Occupied Kashmir.

The government of PoK has proposed that on the same lines as the Kartarpur Corridor has been built between the two countries, the Sharda Peeth corridor should be opened as well, and people from India should be allowed to take the pilgrimage.

The Kashmiri Pandit community has welcomed the PoK assembly's decision. Save Sharda Committee Kashmir has been pushing for the opening of the corridor since 2004.

''We have got to know that the assembly of Pakistan Occupied Kashmir has passed a resolution about the opening of the Sharda corridor. We welcome it. Civil society needs to be congratulated. We recently set up a temple at Teetwal on this side which was inaugurated by the home minister and he on that day said that they will work on the opening of the corridor. The civil society has a role, and we want it to be opened on the same pattern as Kartarpur and it will be a great confidence-building measure,'' said Ravindra Pandita, Head and Founder, Save Sharda Committee.

Recently, Sharda Mata Temple was inaugurated near the Line of Control in the Teetwal area of the Kupwara district. India's Home Minister Amit Shah virtually inaugurated the temple and said that the Government of India will try for the opening of Sharda Peeth on the lines of the Kartarpur Corridor.

The same has been now supported by the PoK Assembly. The home minister had said that the Government of India will work in this direction so that devotees can get a chance to visit Sharda Peeth in PoK.

However, the PoK Assembly's decision has not gone well with the Pakistan establishment. There seems to be a difference of opinion between the people of PoK and Pakistan officials.

Opposing the move, former Pakistan Ambassador to India Abdul Basit said, "The Sharda Peeth has an importance for Kashmiri Pandits and on the lines of Kartarpur they want to open the Sharda Peeth corridor. The members of the assembly have passed a resolution of opening the corridor. It has come from the Kashmiri leader. The Kartarpur corridor is an international border, This is not an international border. We have always wanted that this Line of Control should not exist."

The Kashmiri Pandit community hopes that the two countries will rise above politics and make sure to open the corridor for the devotees.

PoK assembly supports Amit Shah’s statement on opening of Sharda Peeth corridor

Recently, the Kashmir Premier League's (KPL) President Arif Malik made heads turn when he announced that he has decided to send a formal invite to India's star batter Virat Kohli to participate in the second edition of the league, in Pakistan Occupied Kashmir (PoK), or at least grace his presence as a guest.

Thus, this led to a widespread reaction from all quarters. Recently, KPL's Director of Cricket Operations and Pakistan's former captain Rashid Latif has clarified that the league's President has decided not only to call Kohli but also many other marquee players from different countries. However, the decision to invite Kohli was solely Malik's, as per Latif's claims.

"My boss Arif Malik gave a statement on inviting Virat Kohli for the Kashmir Premier League. Whether to come or not, it's his call. But he has taken the initiative after some thinking. He will invite players from other countries as well as India, but these are not my quotes. Please don't quote that I said so," Latif said.

US State Department says Ilhan Omar is not visiting Pakistan on government sponsored travel

The Indian Air Force and Indian Army on Wednesday commemorated the 75th ‘Infantry Day’ when the Indian armed forces arrived in Srinagar to repel attacks from Pakistan, after Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) decided to join the Indian union.

It was on this day 75 years ago in 1947 that the air force first landed in Budgam to thwart Pakistani militants from entering the Indian territory to stoke up secessionist movement following the partition of India.

October 27 is celebrated as the ‘Infantry Day’ by the Indian Army to commemorate the arrival of the Indian Army at Badgam Airfield to protect Jammu & Kashmir after the ‘Instrument of Accession’ was signed on 26 October 1947 between the erstwhile king of J&K Maharaja Hari Singh and the Republic of India.

The Badgam landings were the first military operations of independent India when the Indian Army was inducted by the Indian Air Force at Budgam Airport on 27 October 1947, said the Indian army.

“On this historic occasion, on 75 years of Budgam landing, in which after the Instrument of Accession was signed, we moved in quickly our troops. Srinagar airfield was saved and thereafter we could launch a further offensive and push the Pakistan military, which came as kabailis, further back,” Air Marshal Amit Dev said.

“I am sure, if the UN had not intervened, perhaps the entire Kashmir would have been ours. It was not only IAF and Army's participation in Budgam but there have been many small missions that have resulted in ensuring the freedom of free Kashmir. I'm sure someday PoK (Pakistan occupied Kashmir) will join this part of Kashmir and we'll have whole Kashmir in years to come,” he added.

The replication of the historic event was organised at Old Air Field to pay tribute to the soldiers and people of Jammu & Kashmir who laid down their lives, and also to honour the next of kin of war heroes who participated in the 1947-48 War.

The event was attended by Jammu & Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, Air Marshal Amit Dev, Air Officer Commanding-In-Chief, Western Air Command, Lieutenant General Devendra Pratap Pandey, General Officer Commanding 15 Corps along with several other civil and military dignitaries.

“The first Sikh, under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Dewan Ranjit Rai, who later laid down his life at Baramulla, changed the course of the war, wherein people and soldiers of Jammu & Kashmir and the Indian Army fought valiantly alongside to evict Pakistani Forces, driving them out of most of Jammu & Kashmir till ceasefire on 05 January 1949,'' said the Indian Army.

The Indian Army also unveiled a war memorial at Srinagar Airport.

The memorial commemorates the arrival of Indian Army in Indian Air Force at Srinagar Airport in 1947, and the role played by Major Somnath Sharma, Param Vir Chakra, Brigadier Rajinder Singh, Maha Vir Chakra and Maqbool Sherwani in India’s historic victory in its first war after independence.

Huge price hike of food grains is one of the serious problems plaguing Imran Khan’s ‘Naya Pakistan'. Pakistan occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK) has witnessed mass protests for the past few months over the skyrocketing prices in the region.

A protest was organised on January 13 by the Action Committee in Rawalakot against the removal of subsidy on wheat flour. However, the police had arrested local leaders before the planned protest that caused a furore among the residents.

On Wednesday evening, the angry protesters clashed with the police and set ablaze a police station, and destroyed police vehicles in the Azad Pattan area.

Police also resorted to firing and lathi-charge on protesters injuring several of them. A protester said: "The arrest is a conspiracy to weaken our protest. Our movement is very peaceful for the rights of the people. It is against rising inflation and unemployment. It is about the demand for a good education. However, they are carrying atrocities on us. Our friends from the Action Committee, Rawalakot, who were raising voice against a hike in the price of flour, were picked up by the police. What was their fault?"Another protester said: "We were peacefully organising this protest, but the authorities have taken inappropriate action and arrested our friends in Rawalakot. We condemn this act. We want to warm the authorities as if they were not released, there will be a massive protest in the Poonch division".

Locals claim that this is a regular feature in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir and in the name of civil rights Pakistan government is abusing them. The people in the occupied region are fed-up due high-handedness of Islamabad and forcing people to face challenges in meeting their daily requirements.

There have been protests for the past several weeks against high inflation, but the local government and Islamabad are paying no heed to their concerns.

Food inflation fuels anti-government protests in Pakistan occupied Kashmir

India has slammed Pakistan's plan to convert Pakistan occupied Kashmir's (PoK) Gilgit Baltistan as the 5th province of the country. The development comes after Pakistani PM Imran Khan today announced that his government plans to accord “provisional provincial status” to the region.

The Ministry of external affairs in a strongly worded statement said, India "firmly rejects" the attempt by Pakistan to bring "material changes" to a "part of Indian territory, under its illegal and forcible occupation" and reiterated that the Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh are an "integral part of India by virtue of the legal, complete and irrevocable accession" of Jammu and Kashmir to the Union of India in 1947.

Adding further that "Pakistan has no locus standi on territories illegally and forcibly occupied by it." and such attempts by the country "intended to camouflage its illegal occupation" cannot hide the "grave human rights violations, exploitation and denial of freedom for over seven decades to the people residing in these Pakistan occupied territories."

This is the first time Imran Khan has publically announced his intention to announce the area as a province of Pakistan, and it was expected to draw a strong reaction from New Delhi.

New Delhi also called on Pakistan that, "instead of seeking to alter the status of these Indian territories", Islamabad should "immediately vacate all areas under its illegal occupation.”

What is to be seen, is if China will reach out to United Nations on Pakistani action, given that in 2019 Beijing had gone to the New York-based body after India removed the special status for the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir.

Pakistan has 4 provinces as of now--most populated Punjab, the southern Sindh, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa bordering Afghanistan and the largest one, also resource-rich Balochistan.

After Baluchistan, it was time for people in Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK) to strongly oppose Chinese influence and presence in Pakistan. People in Muzaffarabad, a city in POK held a torch rally on Tuesday to oppose Chinese designs to build dams on Neelum-Jhelum River.

"Neelum-Jhelum behne do, humein zinda rehne do," (Let waters of Neelum, Jhelum flow freely, let us live in our lands) was one of slogans heard during the torch protest held by angry locals in Muzaffarabad.

Gravitas Exclusive: Is China reviving a terror group in PoK?

Coronavirus conspiracy theories are finding traction in Pakistan and the Imran Khan government is back at doing what it does best.

Raising the Kashmir issue at a global forum —- even during a pandemic. It seems — there is no cure for obsession either.

Here's what it's making the Imran khan government do. Last month, Pakistan's foreign minister — the know-it-all Shah Mehmood Qureshi wrote to the then UNSC chair China's Zhang Jun and the concern was not coronavirus but 'grave human rights situation' in Kashmir.

Pakistan wanted an urgent discussion by the security council on this alleged situation. It said that the developments in Kashmir posed a threat to international peace and security.

According to reports, the UNSC chair chose to take no notice of Islamabad's request. Beijing turned down Pakistan's request for urgent consideration of the made-up situation in Kashmir.

It was quite a turnaround but Pakistan is in no mood to give up. It's come up with something more bizarre. Pakistan issued a press release which states that Pakistan strongly condemns and rejects the latest Indian action aimed at illegally changing the demographic structure of Kashmir. It goes on to state that 'the Jammu and Kashmir reorganization order 2020 is another illegal step by India to settle non-Kashmiris by changing the domicile laws''.

Unlike Pakistan — India is under a 21-day lockdown. There are travel restrictions — forget re-settling. Also — the government is within the constitutional ambit to do so. Every Indian has the right to settle wherever he or she wants.

India is a free-for-all country. It'll remain one.

Coronavirus patients are still being resettled in Pakistan occupied Kashmir. Forget companies & business. The Pakistani army is forcibly moving positive cases from the Punjab province to Pakistan occupied Kashmir and Gilgit Baltistan.

Mirpur — a strategically located city is being turned into Pakistan's quarantine centre. There have been protests but to no avail.

Here's something else Pakistan doesn't want you to know.

The ongoing coronavirus crisis could lead to 18.5 million job losses in Pakistan. The Pakistani economy is expected to sustain a loss of nearly 32 billion US Dollars in the coming months. These estimates emerged during a meeting by Pakistan's ministry of planning and development. The losses have been estimated based on the impact of restrictions imposed on businesses and international trade.

Which by the way have been minimal. No sympathy for its stranded citizens. No contribution to the SAARC fund.No basis to its claims on kashmir. No restrictions amid the ongoing pandemic. And no preparedness for what lies ahead. The coronavirus cases have crossed 2400 in Pakistan. There have been 35 deaths. Globally — there's a need to break the chain of transmission.

In Pakistan, there's a need to break the chain recklessness.

Lawyers took to the streets in Gilgit city on Friday to protest against a controversial bill that allows relatives of the assembly members to assume jobs in the courts.

Terming it as a 'black' bill, the lawyers protested in front of the Chief Minister House and chant "Rishtidari Bill Namanzoor" (Oppose the Bill which supports kinship).

"We demand from Governor of Gilgit- Baltistan to condemn this 'Black' bill and should not allow it to pass as this bill is against the laws of Supreme Appellate Court in Gilgit-Baltistan and our rights. We will not accept any illegal bill passed by the assembly," said a protesting lawyer.

"On 4th of this month, the so-called assembly passed an unconstitutional bill. They had appointed their relatives on contract basis on the posts of DDPs, DAs and ADPs for six months but now it has been four years since when they have been extending the contracts of their relatives. As per the orders of Supreme Court, these positions were to be filled by the competent candidates who would qualify these competitive exams but unfortunately on 4th of this month a special lobby tabled a bill in the so-called assembly to appoint their relatives," another lawyer said.

"The illegal bill got passed in the assembly. It is the 'murder' of merit and violation of the rule of law. The lawyers registered contempt in the court. The lawyers called for a protest from 4th of this month and in around ten courts of Gilgit-Baltistan they are on a strike against this illegal bill," the lawyer added.

The disgruntled lawyers deemed the bill to be unconstitutional and deprive the competent candidates of their rights and jobs.

A third protesting lawyer said, "It has been a history in Gilgit- Baltistan to appoint incompetent persons through such illegal bills. Appointments have been continuing on similar lines which are illegal. We strictly condemn this bill".

The nepotism in the recruitment process for any government job in Gilgit-Baltistan has remained deep-rooted for decades.

The government of Pakistan has never allowed any policies or legislation to be formulated in the illegally occupied territory that could benefit the locals and bring development in the region.

Lawyers protest against new employment bill in PoK

Thousands of demonstrators have taken to the streets of Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK) as part of the ongoing protests against the police crackdown on peaceful demonstrations last month that claimed the lives of one person and injured several others in the region.

Protesters alleged that the crackdown has become the modus operandi of the establishment which uses brute force to muzzle all kinds of opinions and dissents in the region.

They alleged that the incident was nothing short of the mayhem unleashed by Pakistani forces in 1947 when they invaded their territory.

Afzal Suleria, Leader of National Students Federation in Muzaffarabad said, "Our state was divided into many when the tribal attack took place in 1947. The history was repeated. There was a situation of violence and plunder. Women were targeted. Houses were shelled with ammunition."

"Children were charged with baton. Innocents were attacked. One common citizen Aslam Abbasi was killed. No judicial commission has been formed till date and the culprits have not been prosecuted. They were never brought to justice and no FIR was registered".

Various political parties under the All independent parties alliance (AIPA) in PoK had called for a pro-freedom rally in Muzaffarabad on October 22 to observe "black day". It was on this day in 1947 that Pakistani forces had invaded Jammu and Kashmir.

People had come out on the streets in large numbers to register their protest on the 72nd anniversary of the Invasion Day.

Denying the demonstrators to hold anti-government protestors, the police resorted to using tear gas shells and lathi-charged to disperse the crowd.

Muzaffar Baig, another leader of the National Students Federation said while addressing a gathering, "They have their power of influence on common people, be he a businessman, farmer, labourer, or common dweller. Police exercise its authority only on commoners."

He added, "You think we are going to be scared of them? If you are a believer of any religion, for example, you are a Muslim then prepare yourself to sacrifice for Allah. We are not going to be scared of these monsters. We are not getting scared of these people who earn Rs 20,000- 30,000 but don't hesitate in taking ten rupees from a poor man".

While anti-establishment demonstrations and protests is a common sight in the PoK, the last few weeks have presented a different picture altogether.

Unprecedented support and the unflinching morale of the people have certainly rung alarm bells for Islamabad.

At a time when Imran Khan Government is already facing a massive political resistance, an impending change in PoK cannot be ruled out.

Widespread protests in PoK ring alarm bells for Islamabad

Dr Shabir Choudhry, a writer and an activist from Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), on Monday accused Pakistan of deceiving Kashmiri people by creating a division in the name of religion.

He said Islamabad is using PoK territory for nurturing terrorist outfits, which are being used as proxies against India.

Since the withdrawal of the special status of Jammu and Kashmir, Pakistan has intensified its tactic to create division and provoke Kashmiris on the basis of religion.

"The major problem of Pakistani establishment is that they want to find justification for the division of India in the name of religion. Now, people ask them as if your vision of two-nation theory on the basis of religion is so strong then why Bangladesh was created," said Dr Shabir.

"Why people in Balochistan are seeking independence? In Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) and Sindh, people are asking for independence. Pakistan wants to make Jammu and Kashmir dispute as a religious issue. They are fooling and motivating people in the name of religion," the writer, activist added.

Shabir also called Pakistan a failed democracy where the Army always projects itself as 'supreme'.

"Anybody who opposes or criticises Pakistan is called a 'traitor'. It is in Pakistan's culture as they called (Muhammad Ali) Jinnah a traitor. When Fatima Jinnah fought an election against Dr Ayub Khan, she was termed an Indian agent. Nawaz Sharif, who is three times Prime Minister of Pakistan, is also labelled as India's agent. There's a long list," he said.

"Anybody who disagrees with the views of the establishment and the government is an Indian agent. In that kind of environment, our survival is very difficult," Choudhry added.

The London-based activist also accused Pakistan of exploiting natural resources in PoK and Gilgit-Baltistan.

The Neelum-Jhelum Hydropower plant, which has been designed to divert water from the Neelum River to a power station on the Jhelum River, has faced a wider criticism by the people of Muzaffarabad city.

The project raised several environmental and economic challenges for the indigenous people. Neelum-Jhelum Hydropower plant is one among several projects which Pakistan has launched in PoK but it only benefits Pakistani provinces and not the residents in the occupied territory.

Shabir further said, "If you see old electric bills, the government used to charge over Rs 20 from each household depending on its areas from the local residents in the name of construction of a dam.

They are using our resources and also ask users to pay money for the construction, whereas it directly benefits Pakistan. We have got nothing."

He added, "The flow of the river has been diverted and we have been facing environmental and health issues. The dried river has turned into sewerage and a place for garbage dumping. In future, there will be having numerous issues, which will force locals to migrate, many of them into Pakistan. If they are so concerned about us, they won't have done this."

Despite Islamabad's attempts to gain sympathy of Kashmiris, massive anti-Pakistan and pro-freedom protests are going on in Muzaffarabad and other parts of PoK. This anger clearly shows a growing mistrust among the people of PoK and Gilgit Baltistan against Pakistan`s malicious designs, he added.
