Filmmakers Waad al-Kateab and Edward Watts are hoping the Oscar nomination for their documentary "For Sama" will remind people of the plight of Syrians affected by the country's nearly nine-year-old civil war.

"For Sama" was nominated in the best documentary field on Monday after getting four British BAFTA nods and a prize at the Cannes Film Festival.

"About three years ago I was in that place where I didn't know if I would be alive or not and now I'm under all the light, just trying to tell the story," al-Kateab told Reuters in London on Tuesday.

"I hope this is a big opportunity to shine a brighter light on the things that sadly continue to happen in Idlib and I also hope that the people of Syria will receive some hope from the success of 'For Sama'," she said.

The film is al-Kateab's love letter to her daughter Sama. Narrated by al-Kateab, it was crafted out of more than 500 hours of footage she filmed over five years, starting as an 18-year-old student in Aleppo witnessing the start of the uprising.

The documentary chronicles events in al-Kateab's personal life - falling in love with her friend, doctor Hamza, their wedding, and the birth of Sama - while the conflict rages around them.

She started filming on a mobile phone and gradually moved onto more professional equipment, while occasionally reporting for British television from Aleppo.

The film includes life at her husband's hospital - the only one left in the city - and families such as hers who chose to stay in the besieged city.

Al-Kateab, then pregnant with her second daughter, Taima, and her family were eventually forced to leave Syria for Turkey and later London, where she joined forces with Watts to turn the hundreds of hours of video into a film.

The first edit was too hard-hitting, the filmmakers said, and needed toning down.

"It was a big responsibility to tell the world that this is still happening and we can't let that happen again and again and again. Unfortunately, as we're speaking now, this is still happening," al-Kateab said.

The Academy Awards will be handed out on Feb. 9 in Hollywood. If al-Kateab has her way, now 4-year-old Sama will be there with her to share her story.

"She's very tall now, she speaks a lot. She is normal like any other child... I hope she will be with me in the trip to Hollywood," she said

Jamie Foxx stayed out of the Oscars diversity debate at the London premiere of his new movie 'Just Mercy' on Wednesday (January 15).

The film, which tackles the subjects of wrongful convictions and racism, was snubbed by the Academy when nominations were revealed on Monday. <a href="https://www.wionews.com/entertainment/2020-oscars-nominations-7-snubs-that-took-everyone-by-surprise-274263">Read about 7 snubs this Oscars nomination.&nbsp;</a>

Asked about the lack of black nominees in top categories, Foxx said: "We don't start these movies to win awards. We're happy about the NAACP award, the SAG award, but all of that goes into the pot of making sure that 'Just Mercy' gets out there, and then there's also a level of respect for the people that are nominated. We don't want to cloud their moment. You know what I mean? It's like this is their time, they put the work in. However anybody feels about anything, let's let them enjoy their time."&nbsp;<a href="https://www.wionews.com/entertainment/academy-member-stephen-king-receives-backlash-for-comment-on-lack-of-diversity-at-oscars-274405">Also read:&nbsp;Stephen King receives backlash for comment on lack of diversity in Oscar nominations</a>

"I think honestly for awards, we don't make movies for that.....This is the nominees' moment, they work extremely hard on their films and we don't want to be a part of that dialogue, taking away from anything that they have going on. The film chronicles Stevenson's efforts to wade through the legal and political morass that put McMillian, convicted of the murder of a white female store clerk, on death row for six years in Alabama, and fight the racial bias that kept him, and others like him, there. In big breaking news from Hollywood, Netflix is planning a biopic on Leonard Bernstein, the orchestra conductor, and composer of West Side Story.

As per a report in Deadline, Bradley Cooper will star in the project as well as helm it.

The feature will be produced by a consortium of big Hollywood names, including Steven Spielberg, Martin Scorsese, ‘Joker’ helmer Todd Philips and Emma Tillinger Koskoff, a frequent film collaborator of Martin Scorsese’s. The strangest of the names in the list is that of Steven Spielberg’s who has been very critical of streaming platforms vs traditional films and distribution channels.&nbsp;

The film on Leonard Bernstein's biopic is yet-to-be-named but will have&nbsp;“a significant theatrical release before the film premieres on its streaming site, just as it did for Scorsese on The Irishman.” Remember when Martin Scorsese revealed at the time of ‘The Irishman’ that it was only Netflix that let it make the film as he visualised it. Oscars 2020: Elton John, Cynthia Erivo, Billie Eilish to perform on the awards night

If there's one film that I would personally recommend that you must watch this Oscar season, then it would be a film called 'Honeyland'.

Mainly because almost nobody else is going to suggest it to you! It's a documentary set in North Macedonia. (Documentary? no... and where in God's name is North Macedonia??)

But I have my reasons.

First, in our extremely low-attention span times, you would be glad to know that the film is only 85 minutes long. One way or the other you won't regret it much.&nbsp;

Next, it's about honey. Hard to find people who hate it. If you do, please stop reading right now.

And last but definitely not the least, it's the first time in history that a film is nominated for a Best Documentary Feature Award, as well as, the Best International Feature Award.

'Honeyland' is a film that breaks barriers in terms of what even constitutes a movie. In technical terms, it is nominated in both the non-fiction and fiction categories of the awards.

In simple terms, a documentary is being nominated for a Best Film Award too. Now that's a rarity for any awards ceremony, leave alone the Oscars.

Flashback.

In 2004, Michael Moore’s documentary film "Fahrenheit 9/11" beat 18 other movies to win the coveted Palme d'Or - the top prize at the Cannes Film Festival.

And that was only the second documentary in history to do so at Cannes. The first one being 'The Silent World'. Co-directed by Jacques Cousteau and Louis Malle, it won the Palme d'Or in 1956.

Moore's documentary was a no-show at the Oscars though.

Not even slightly because it wasn't good enough, but because Moore decided to go in for a pay-per-view televising of the film. So that shut the film out from even the Best Documentary nomination.

Cut to now.

So all that means, you would be watching something very unique - brag alert here - its title might sound simple and straightforward. But that's only a decoy, even the story behind the making of it is fascinating.&nbsp;

Picture this:

A couple of Russian Documentary filmmakers, shooting in the remote countryside of North Macedonia. The plan is to shoot a short environmental documentary about a river. They don't know the local language which is not even the national language of this newly formed country that declared its independence in 1991.

And accidentally they discover beehives and the woman who tends to them. They didn’t speak Turkish -&nbsp;the preferred language of the film’s main subjects.

They would sleep in tents in the Protagonist's backyard for 3-4 days together. And that went on for over 3 years which means hundreds of hours of footage.

The filmmakers then spent nearly 4 months watching what they have shot after which they crunched into less than an hour and a half.

The visuals should tell you the story all by themselves. Honeyland started off with a bang at the awards circuit, winning at the Sundance Film Festival. And the rest as they all always say is history.

Cut to now. So all that means, you would be watching something very unique - brag alert here - its title might sound simple and straightforward. But that's only a decoy, even the story behind the making of it is fascinating. Picture this: A couple of Russian Documentary filmmakers, shooting in the remote countryside of North Macedonia. The plan is to shoot a short environmental documentary about a river. They don't know the local language which is not even the national language of this newly formed country that declared its independence in 1991. And accidentally they discover beehives and the woman who tends to them. They didn’t speak Turkish - the preferred language of the film’s main subjects. (Disclaimer: The opinions expressed above are the personal views of the author and do not reflect the views of ZMCL)

'Honeyland': One film that nobody will recommend, but you must watch

Spain picks Almodovar's 'Pain and Glory' for Oscars

After winning the top honour at Cannes earlier this year, South Korean film 'Parasite' is headed to Oscars. The country has selected Bong Joon-ho`s films as its entry for the Best International Feature Film category at the 2020 Academy Awards.

The black comedy, which won the Palme d`Or at the Cannes Film Festival this year, tells the story of a low-income family working their way into a rich family`s lives as household employees.

The film is Bong`s second shot at the Oscars after his film `Mother` was selected by the Korean Film Council (KOFIC) in 2009, but didn`t make it to the final shortlist.&nbsp;

`Parasite` follows unemployed driver Kim Ki-taek (Song Kang-ho), his wife, Choong Sook (Jang Hye-jin), and their children as they struggle financially and aspire to live a rich life one day.&nbsp;

Things look up for the Kim family when the children are hired as a tutor and art therapist to the rich Park family.&nbsp;

'Parasite' is scheduled for North America release on October 11 in New York and Los Angeles ahead of the awards seasons.An independent jury led by Kim Young-Jin, programming director at Jeonju International Film Festival (JIFF) picked `Parasite` from a shortlist of eight feature films to represent Korea in the upcoming Oscars race.

After a successful opening in June, `Parasite` grossed over USD 71.3 million domestically and is the first Cannes-winning film that broke 10 million in ticket sales at the Korean box office.

Despite its strong home-grown film industry and stellar directors like Lee Chang-Dong (Burning) and Park Chan-wook (The Handmaiden), South Korea has never won the international feature film category or made it to the final shortlist.&nbsp;

The nominations for the International Feature Film will be announced along with other categories on January 13, 2020. The 92nd Academy Awards will be held February 9, 2020.

After winning the top honour at Cannes earlier this year, South Korean film 'Parasite' is headed to Oscars. The country has selected Bong Joon-ho`s films as its entry for the Best International Feature Film category at the 2020 Academy Awards. The black comedy, which won the Palme d`Or at the Cannes Film Festival this year, tells the story of a low-income family working their way into a rich family`s lives as household employees. The film is Bong`s second shot at the Oscars after his film `Mother` was selected by the Korean Film Council (KOFIC) in 2009, but didn`t make it to the final shortlist. `Parasite` follows unemployed driver Kim Ki-taek (Song Kang-ho), his wife, Choong Sook (Jang Hye-jin), and their children as they struggle financially and aspire to live a rich life one day. Things look up for the Kim family when the children are hired as a tutor and art therapist to the rich Park family. Debate is raging inside a dark, cavernous soundstage on the Warner Bros Ranch -- about a mushroom.&nbsp;

One film crew member wants to try lighting the six-inch prop from the right. Another favours the left.&nbsp;

Richard Crudo, a veteran Hollywood cinematographer whose credits include 'American Pie,'&nbsp;observes for a moment before stepping in.

"If you can light it right, you're going to get an Academy Award," he says, with a wry smile.

Crudo is overseeing 30 or so young interns from the elite "Academy Gold" summer program, set up by the industry body in a bid to promote diversity in the aftermath of the #OscarsSoWhite campaign.

The scheme is targeted at those from underrepresented backgrounds -- women, ethnic minorities and people with disabilities.

It sees aspiring filmmakers attend panels and workshops across Los Angeles in collaboration with Tinseltown giants including Disney, Sony and Paramount -- before each is paired up with a mentor.

Crudo -- a member of the Academy, which hands out the Oscars -- says Hollywood has taken these steps after finally realizing its rich, white male-centred universe was "just an untenable situation."

"It's hard for everyone to crack in, and especially hard for minority people and people who've been underrepresented in the industry for many years," he says.

"It was time -- it was high time."

- 'Getting there' -

On this day, the interns have been split into five groups, each tasked with turning the same deliberately opaque script into a movie scene showcasing a genre of their choosing.

The current team has opted for "alternative" and is aiming for a surreal, David Lynchian aesthetic -- cue a laughing mannequin in a cowboy hat, plenty of intense brooding stares and that bizarre mushroom.

Optimism about the industry's direction among the young auteurs -- some of whom started working in movies after the #OscarsSoWhite, #MeToo and #TimesUp movements began -- is palpable.

"We have a very good thing happening. Do I think it's at my pace? Like, no, I would have half this crew... it would be equal," says 22-year-old Alyssah Powell, cinematographer for the day.

"The day that I can go to the Oscars, and there's as many female nominees as there are male nominees, then I'll be satisfied for sure.

"But, you know -- we're getting there."

Many of the 120-odd trainees participating in the program run by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences had already obtained internships or work at major studios and were hand-picked to apply.

Powell, who started in film at 19 and has minor credits for "Kong: Skull Island" and "Pacific Rim: Uprising," feels lucky to have gained a toehold so early -- but also credits her own perseverance.

"If I always went into an interview, or went on to a set being like, 'Oh, well, I'm a woman...,' not only am I thinking that, now I'm projecting that onto others," she says.

"It's easy to also get discouraged by stuff like that. But, you know, take it with a grain of salt. We're on the up -- this is a good movement."

- 'Stubbornly static' -

There is also awareness that change takes time, more is required, and opportunities such as this program are not available for everyone.&nbsp;

This year's "Hollywood Diversity Report" found women and minorities have made modest gains but remain underrepresented in the industry compared with their share of the population.

Women held 32.9 per cent of lead acting roles in movies -- up nearly two percentage points from 2016, but still far short of their share of 50 per cent of the overall population.&nbsp;

"Advances for people of colour and women remain fairly incremental, if not stubbornly static," the University of California Los Angeles authors wrote.

The interns who spoke with AFP all say they have not personally experienced discrimination in the industry due to their race, gender or background, but know plenty around them who have.&nbsp;

"When the directors and the production company heads don't normally look like you, it can be difficult," says Terion Ford, a 26-year-old African-American from Dallas.

Ford says he believes change is coming about because Hollywood executives have finally realized that viewers want to see stories told from the perspective of those living them.

"Not everybody's on board, not everybody wants change," he says.

"But I'm saying there's going to be a point where they're going to be like, 'Alright, we can't beat them -- we've got to join them'."

Post #OscarsSoWhite campaign, Hollywood trainees see progress on diversity

A gown worn to the 1974 Academy Awards and more than 1,200 other items from the life of late actress Elizabeth Taylor will be offered for sale at an auction in early December, Julien's Auctions announced on Wednesday.

The pale blue chiffon dress that Taylor wore to the Oscars, which was designed by Edith Head, is expected to fetch between $4,000 and $6,000, the auction house said in a statement.

Also on offer will be a gold-plated, sterling silver Cartier belt that Taylor had inscribed to her mother. Darren Julien, president and chief executive of Julien's Auctions, said he expected the belt to sell for more than $40,000.

The auction will take place December&nbsp;6-8 in Beverly Hills, California. Bids also can be placed through the auction house's website.

Other clothing for sale will include green wool felt cape the actress wore to Buckingham Palace in 1970 and a New York Yankees jacket she donned for a Vogue Paris photo shoot.

The auction also will feature jewellery, wigs, fine art and household items from Taylor's life. Julien said he also expected to offer artwork that would sell for as high as the $60,000-range.

Taylor, who died in 2011 at the age of 79, epitomized Hollywood glamour from its golden age with her love of diamonds, violet eyes and a tumultuous love life that included eight marriages - two of them to Welsh actor Richard Burton.

In a career spanning seven decades, the British-American Taylor first gained fame in 1944's 'National Velvet'&nbsp;at age 12 and was nominated for five Oscars. She won the best actress Oscar for 1960's 'Butterfield 8,'&nbsp;and 1966's 'Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?'

John Bailey, president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, and his wife Carol Little visited the Taj Mahal on Monday.

Captivated by the beauty of the Taj Mahal, the monument of love, which is one of the Seven Wonders of the World, Bailey told ANI that the experience is even better than a movie. "All Americans have an understanding of the importance, the symbolic and cultural aesthetic and beauty of the Taj Mahal. So, for us to actually see it live is like, better than a movie," Bailey told ANI.

The couple was received by the mayor of Agra, Navin Jain. During his interaction with the mayor, Bailey discussed the future collaboration between Indian and American cinema.

"Just in the few days that we have been here, Carol and I have begun to get an understanding of the richness, diversity and all the languages that Indian cinema is produced in. We are still just discovery since there are more movies made in India than anywhere else in the world, maybe 3 or 4 times more than we make in America. This is a strong signal to us that we very much want to increase the relationship with India," Bailey said.

Bailey has been the academy chief for the past two years. He recently attended the 56th Maharashtra State Film Awards as chief guest and is also expected to visit Delhi during his stay in India.

From going without a host to handing out key awards during commercial breaks to a quickly nixed idea for a popular film category -- Oscar organisers are struggling to keep Hollywood's biggest night relevant while dealing with a string of messy controversies.

With less than two weeks to go before the February 24 gala, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has been weathering the latest debacle over four awards to be presented off-air -- a decision many in the industry have denounced as "stupid" and "disrespectful."

The awards are Best Cinematography, Best Film Editing, Best Live Action Short, and Best Makeup and Hairstyling.

Academy president John Bailey informed the membership of the plan earlier this week, saying it was in line with a promise to shorten the broadcast to three hours, an hour shorter than previous telecasts.

The decision, however, has been met with derision across the industry, with more than 40 top cinematographers and directors, including Quentin Tarantino and Spike Lee, sending a letter of protest to the Academy.

"Relegating these essential cinematic crafts to a lesser status in this 91st Academy Awards ceremony is nothing less than an insult to those of us who have devoted our lives and passions to our chosen profession," the open letter read.

Alfonso Cuaron, whose celebrated movie 'Roma'&nbsp;has been nominated for 10 Oscars, including best cinematography, said the move amounted to marginalizing key players in the art of moviemaking.

"In the history of CINEMA, masterpieces have existed without sound, without colour, without a story, without actors and without music," he tweeted &nbsp;"No one single film has ever existed without CINEMAtography and without editing."

Lee, whose film 'BlacKkKlansman'&nbsp;has been nominated in six categories, including for best director, also weighed in during an interview on US television.

"As a director, without my cinematographer, editor, hair and makeup, there's no movie," he said, suggesting Oscar organizers "get rid of musical numbers" to stick to three-hour running time.

The Academy tried to clarify its decision, underlining in a letter to members that while the four awards will not be seen live, the winning speeches will air later in the broadcast and will also be live-streamed.

Bailey also noted the change in the show had been approved by the Academy's Board of Governors.&nbsp;

The awards debacle comes on the heels of another brouhaha over the show taking place without a host for the first time in 30 years.

Comedian Kevin Hart stepped down as emcee in December, just days after accepting the gig following a fierce backlash on social media over old homophobic tweets.

Months earlier the Academy rankled Hollywood with the announcement of a new Oscar designed to reward popular films -- a decision widely seen as a bid to increase viewership.

That proposal was also shelved following a huge backlash.

Industry experts say the Academy is solely to blame for its sloppy handling of the recent debacles which have unfolded just as the organization appeared to have weathered the 2016-17 #OscarSoWhite storm over the lack of racial diversity among nominees.

"They don't message these changes that they are trying to make properly and they don't sell them properly," Anne Thompson, editor at large for movie blog IndieWire, told AFP.

"They actually don't seem to understand the contemporary landscape of public relations, as a big corporation should be cognisant of how these things can play out," she added.

Thompson said while the Academy was under tremendous pressure by ABC, the network that broadcasts the ceremony, to shorten the Oscars and boost ratings, it was going against its own mission to celebrate filmmaking.

"Somehow they have been sending a different message, which is that they are catering to ABC," she added.&nbsp;

"But the reason the Oscars have been such trusted and powerful awards broadcast is that they are voted on by the respected artists who make the movies."

Oscar organisers struggle to keep show relevant

In a win for Netflix, Amazon and other internet streaming services, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences have voted not to change its rules for winning an Oscar, Hollywood’s top prize.

The decision follows a battle over how long a movie must play on the big screens in theatres before being launched on the internet, DVD or other mediums that put it on the small screen.

The Academy’s Board of Governors said on Tuesday that the existing rules, which say a movie has to run in a theatre for only seven days in Los Angeles to qualify, had won.

“We support the theatrical experience as integral to the art of motion pictures, and this weighed heavily in our discussions,” Academy President John Bailey said in a release.

Some theatre owners say short runs at a theatre means more people will stay home to watch movies.

And movie producers including Steven Spielberg have said movies that are shown primarily on the small screen should only compete for television awards, such as the Emmys.

In February, Netflix won three Oscars for 'Roma,'&nbsp;which streamed three weeks after a limited theatrical debut.

Netflix tweeted that it “loved cinema” but also supported access for people who cannot afford or do not live close to, theatres.

Shorter windows would keep some customers at home, Greg Marcus, chief executive of The Marcus Corporation, owner of the fourth-largest US&nbsp;theatre chain, earlier told Reuters.

“If you damage the business and take away 10 per cent of our customers, we won’t be able to reinvest in the theatrical experience,” Marcus said. “That would ultimately hurt content providers.”

Others said consumers are happy with the current system.

Ticket sales in 2018 reached a record $41 billion globally and $12 billion in the United States and Canada, even as Netflix released about 90 movies for streaming.

“We’re not talking about something that’s broken,” Vue International cinemas CEO Tim Richards said in an earlier interview with Reuters.

The Academy’s Bailey said the rule could be revisited next year.

“We plan to further study the profound changes occurring in our industry and continue discussions with our members about these issues,” he said.

Netflix and other streaming services win Oscars cinema rule battle

Veteran filmmaker Steven Spielberg’s fight against streaming platforms is real.&nbsp;

Taking it a step further, Spielberg will now speak with the Board of Governors at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) to insist for a rule change that will make films made by the streaming services like Netflix, Hulu and Amazon ineligible for Oscars.

A spokesperson for Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment said, “Steven feels strongly about the difference between the streaming and theatrical situation. He’ll be happy if the others will join (his campaign) when that comes up (at the Academy Board of Governors meeting). He will see what happens.”

This comes in response to ‘Roma’ winning big awards this Oscars even though it is a Netflix film directed by Mexican filmmaker Alfonso Cuaron. The film got three big awards -- Best Director, Best Cinematography, and Best Foreign Language Film. It was just short of Best Picture as ‘Green Book’ took the award home.&nbsp;

Netflix has responded to this by making an indirect response to&nbsp;Spielberg’s crusade to block Netflix as a future contender during the Oscars. They tweeted:&nbsp;“We love cinema," and added, "Here are some things we also love:

Access for people who can’t always afford, or live in towns without, theaters
Letting everyone, everywhere enjoy releases at the same time
Giving filmmakers more ways to share art

"These things are not mutually exclusive,"&nbsp;they concluded.

Meanwhile, the 72-year-old award-winning director is not alone in his fight against films by streaming platforms as many other Academy members also argue that Netflix spent too in its marketing campaign for ‘Roma’, something around $50 million ahead of the Oscars and that the streaming giant failed to adhere to proper theatrical release rules already in place.

Last month, Spielberg took a dig at the streaming services by urging directors to make movies for the “big dark theatres”.

He had previously said that films which debut on streaming services should compete for the Emmys instead of the Oscars.

A spokesperson for Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment said, “Steven feels strongly about the difference between the streaming and theatrical situation. He’ll be happy if the others will join (his campaign) when that comes up (at the Academy Board of Governors meeting). He will see what happens.” This comes in response to ‘Roma’ winning big awards this Oscars even though it is a Netflix film directed by Mexican filmmaker Alfonso Cuaron. The film got three big awards -- Best Director, Best Cinematography, and Best Foreign Language Film. It was just short of Best Picture as ‘Green Book’ took the award home. Netflix has responded to this by making an indirect response to Spielberg’s crusade to block Netflix as a future contender during the Oscars. They tweeted: “We love cinema," and added, "Here are some things we also love: Access for people who can’t always afford, or live in towns without, theaters Letting everyone, everywhere enjoy releases at the same time Giving filmmakers more ways to share art "These things are not mutually exclusive," they concluded. We love cinema. Last month, Spielberg took a dig at the streaming services by urging directors to make movies for the “big dark theatres”. He had previously said that films which debut on streaming services should compete for the Emmys instead of the Oscars.

Netflix hits back at Steven Spielberg for wanting to make films by streaming platforms ineligible for Oscars

If you have been following this year’s Oscars news, you’d know that a major talk was around the supposed romance between co-actors Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper who starred in ‘A Star Is Born’. The film was nominated in all major categories at the Oscars, Golden Globes, BAFTA and others. <a href="http://www.wionews.com/entertainment/oscars-2019-winners-list-199535">See Oscars 2019 winners list.</a>

Every time the lead cast appeared at any of the award ceremony or after party, they stunned their fans with bubbling romance that looked too real, as real as their on-screen chemistry.&nbsp;

This also started rumours that Bradley’s partner-model Irina Shayk has deleted pictures of the couple from her Instagram profile, meanwhile, Gaga <a href="http://www.wionews.com/entertainment/oscar-nominee-lady-gaga-splits-with-fiance-christian-carino-198408">called off her engagement with fiance</a>. &nbsp;All this happened right before the Oscars when the two gave a scintillating performance as they performed Oscar-winning song ‘Shallow’ as a duet.

Now putting all rumours to rest, Gaga who appeared at Jimmy Kimmel’s show opened up on their staged romance and how she fooled us all.&nbsp;

As Kimmel asked Gaga about the romance, she said, “Yes, people saw love and guess what? That’s what we wanted you to see.”

She continued, “[Shallow] is a love song, A Star Is Born is a love story. It was so important to both of us that we were connected the entire time… When you’re singing love songs, that’s what you want people to feel.”

“I’m an artist and I guess [Bradley and I] did a good job… fooled ya!” she said with a laugh.

She even pointed out that she had a similar connection as duet partner Tony Bennett over the past few years. She has been connected with Tony for a long time but she has always denied it.&nbsp;

Gaga then went on to talk about her excitement to show Bradley’s musician side to the world. She said, “Bradley is a musician. My favourite thing about the whole experience — I was so excited for everyone to see him sing live.”

“In that moment when we started and he said ‘Tell me something, girl,’ the audience started cheering and I was like, ‘Yes Bradley! Keep going!'” she added.

‘Shallow’ won the <a href="http://www.wionews.com/entertainment/oscars-2019-live-hollywoods-biggest-night-is-here-199432">Best Original Song trophy </a>at the 91st Academy Awards, making it the singers’ first Oscar win.

Meanwhile, Rami became the first Arab-American actor to win an Oscar for Best Performance in a leading role. The only guy ever to be nominated for the award was ‘Lawrence of Arabia’ star Omar Sharif. As he received the award, he said, “I may not have been the obvious choice, but I guess it worked out. The fact that I’m celebrating him and this story with you tonight is proof that we’re longing for stories like this.”

Others in the race for the award were Christian Bale, Bradley Cooper, Viggo Mortensen and William Dafoe.&nbsp;

During his acceptance speech, the actor went on to add, “I am the son of immigrants from Egypt, a first-generation American. And part of my story is being written right now. And I could not be more grateful to each and every one of you, and everyone who believed in me for this moment. It’s something I will treasure for the rest of my life.”

Rami Malek fell off the Oscars stage after picking Best Actor award for 'Bohemian Rhapsody'

The first hostless Academy Awards broadcast in 30 years attracted a 12 per cent bigger US television audience to Walt Disney Co's ABC than last year's record-low viewership, the network said on Monday.

Sunday night's live telecast drew an average audience of 29.6 million viewers, according to Nielsen data released by ABC. In 2018, the Oscars show averaged 26.5 million viewers, a record low and down from 32.9 million in 2017.

This year's ratings jump was a victory for the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and the show's producers, who were under pressure to expand the audience as overall TV viewership is on the decline.

The ceremony opened with a performance by rock band Queen, featuring 'American Idol'&nbsp;star Adam Lambert as lead vocalist. The show ran about 40 minutes shorter than the 2018 program and eschewed its typical opening monologue for short celebrity cameos.

Many TV critics praised the broadcast, saying the lack of a host made the show move quickly and forced the producers to think creatively about how to entertain viewers.

"I have to say it really worked," wrote Kristopher Tapley of Variety. "Who knew you didn't need a host?"

This year's ceremony relied heavily on the two music-themed contenders in the best picture race, 'A Star Is Born'&nbsp;and 'Bohemian Rhapsody,'&nbsp;to help set the tone. An intimate duet by Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga of Oscar-winning song "Shallow" "was show-stopping territory," Tapley said.

"On film’s big night, it wasn’t the magic of Hollywood that saved this year’s show. It was the power of music," added Lorraine Ali of the Los Angeles Times.

Many of the nominated movies were box-office hits, a contrast to recent years when the Oscars centred around arthouse films seen by a limited audience. Road trip movie 'Green Book'&nbsp;triumphed over 'Roma'&nbsp;to win best picture.

Not everyone liked the hostless format.

"The 2019 Oscar telecast lacked energy and comedy and was treacherously dull. And maybe that could have been avoided if the Academy had done what it has (almost) always done, and procured a host," wrote Kelly Lawler in USA Today.

Comedian Kevin Hart withdrew from the hosting job in December after past homophobic tweets resurfaced. It was only the second time the show went without a host in its 91-year history.

US TV audience for Oscars jumps, hostless show earns praise

Oscars 2019 took place yesterday at the Dolby Theatres in Los Angeles. While Olivia Colman and Rami Malek took home the top acting honours (Best Actress and Best Actor respectively), ‘Green Book’ got the Best Picture award. <a href="http://www.wionews.com/entertainment/oscars-2019-winners-list-199535">See </a><a href="http://www.wionews.com/entertainment/oscars-2019-winners-list-199535">full</a><a href="http://www.wionews.com/entertainment/oscars-2019-winners-list-199535"> list of winners here.</a>

If you followed the awards closely, Olivia while accepting her award, mentioned fellow actress Glenn Close in her speech. Glenn was competing for the Best Actress award along the likes of Colman, Lady Gaga, Yaltiza Aparicio and Melissa McCarthy. <a href="http://www.wionews.com/entertainment/oscars-2019-green-book-upsets-favourite-roma-as-it-wins-best-picture-malek-colman-win-acting-honours-199572">Here's all that happened at the Oscars.</a>

Colman while accepting her award at the stage said, “Glenn Close, you’ve been my idol for so long,” and added, “This isn’t how I wanted it to be.”

It was a major disappointment for Close as she lost the award for the seventh time. Most wouldn’t know but she is the most nominated living actor to not take home an Oscar. She has been nominated seven times, including for this year's ‘The Wife’.

Close is now 71-years-old. Coming close to Close’ record is Amy Adams who has six nods to herself.&nbsp;

Been in the industry for 45 years, Close got her first nomination for ‘The World According to Garp’ that came out in 1982. She then got one for her most well-known role as crazed stalker Alex Forrest in 1987's ‘Fatal Attraction’.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, Close has three Golden Globes, three Emmys, and three Tony. She even won a Golden Globe in January for her role in ‘The Wife’.&nbsp;

Which has not always been the case for me."&nbsp;

Black velvet tuxedo dress and a man who knows how to pose -- Billy Porter caught the fancy of paps present. Billy was styled by Sam Ratelle as the dress was made by designer Christian Siriano. The entertainer styled the dress with jewellery by Oscar Heyman and Bros. In an interview with a magazine, Billy spoke about his sartorial choice and said, "[At the first fitting in the gown,] I felt alive. I felt free. And open, and radiant. And beautiful! Which has not always been the case for me." The designer Christian Siriano also shared Billy’s look on his social media accounts. A film on menstruation, set in rural India, titled 'Period. End of Sentence', has won the Oscar in the Documentary Short Subject category at the 91st Academy Awards.

Award-winning filmmaker Rayka Zehtabchi has directed the short film, which has been produced by Indian producer Guneet Monga's Sikhya Entertainment. The film came to into being as a part of The Pad Project, started by students at the Oakwood School in Los Angeles and their teacher, Melissa Berton.

"I'm not crying because I'm on my period or anything. I can't believe a film on menstruation won an Oscar", Zehtabchi said in her acceptance speech. She also gave a nod to Monga.

"Guneet Monga - know that you have been empowering women all over the world fight for menstrual equality", she added.&nbsp;

Dedicating the award to her school, Berton said the project was born because her students in Los Angeles and people in India wanted to make a human difference.&nbsp;"I share this award with the Feminist Majority Foundation, the entire team and cast. I share this with the teachers and students around the worlds - a period should end a sentence, not a girl's education", she said.

The documentary feature is set in Hapur village outside Delhi, where women lead a quiet revolution as they fight against the deeply rooted stigma of menstruation.&nbsp;For generations, these women did not have access to sanitary pads, which lead to health issues and girls dropping out from schools. When a sanitary pad vending machine is installed in the village, the women learn to manufacture and market their own pads, empowering their community. They name their brand FLY .

"WE WON!!! To every girl on this earth... Know that you are a goddess... If heavens are listening... Look MA we put @sikhya on the map," Monga tweeted after the win.&nbsp;

Other documentary shorts nominated in the category were 'Black Sheep', 'End Game', 'Lifeboat'&nbsp;and 'A Night at the Garden'.&nbsp;

India's moment at the Oscars comes exactly a decade after A R Rahman and sound engineer Resul Pookutty won the Academy awards for 'Slumdog Millionaire'.

Oscars 2019: Trump accuses Spike Lee of taking 'racist hit' at him

By Claire Jenkins

Another year, another Oscars Ceremony. Red-carpeted self-congratulations, the popping of flashes and the anticipation of the popping of corks at the many after parties for the rich and famous. And, once again, another Academy Awards in which no women were mentioned in the important category of best director.

In the 91 years that the awards have been running, only five women have been nominated for this coveted award – and only one, Kathryn Bigelow, has come away with the statuette: this represents about 1 per cent of nominees and winners. It’s a shockingly low statistic, even when you take into account that a mere 8 per cent of Hollywood’s top 250 films in 2018 were directed by women. In 2017 America’s Equal Employment Opportunity Commission found Hollywood to be guilty of discrimination against female directors, but as yet there have been no significant shifts in the number of women directing.

But while there is clearly much to do, there may be some small tremors discernible on Hollywood’s Geiger counter. Take Mimi Leder‘s newest film 'On the Basis of Sex', about the career of US Supreme Court justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Leder was effectively ostracised by Hollywood after the commercial failure of Pay it Forward (2000), so her return to directing with a biopic of one of America’s most prominent feminist icons suggests that Hollywood is softening in its treatment of women on, and off, screen.

Leder’s return to the director’s chair comes alongside the impressive success of Ava DuVernay, who has been breaking ground for women of colour in the film industry. DuVernay became the first African-American woman to make over $100 million at the American domestic box office with A Wrinkle in Time (2018) and was subsequently offered a $100m deal with Warner Bros. This deal came despite the film’s lukewarm critical reception, and claims that it was helped to box office success by 'The Incredibles 2', with which it was paired at various drive-ins in the US. It should be noted that DuVernay’s deal with Warner Bros was to develop television content.

It is on the television and streaming sectors that women seem to have more opportunities. It was as a television director that Leder has been working since her film career faltered, gaining acclaim for her work on 'The Leftovers', and 'DuVernay' has oscillated between television and film – taking on a number of producing roles for the small screen.

The current Hollywood climate continues to favour male filmmakers, with its penchant for high-octane action blockbusters and superhero movies that are more often than not films for – and about – men. Coverage of the forthcoming Captain Marvel movie may be trying to draw on the film’s feminist credentials – with its female lead and female director – but Anna Boden is only one half of the directorial team (she shares the role with Ryan Fleck). So despite Marvel boss Kevin Feige’s claims that “many” of the upcoming Marvel films will be directed by women, as yet no movie from what is known as the “Marvel Cinematic Universe” (MCU) has a female director, although Australian director Cate Shortland is expected to helm the Black Widow film.

Even if MCU and other action-producers continue to hire women directors, though, this will not necessarily affect the Oscars – 'Black Panther' currently standing as the only MCU movie to be nominated.

Hooray for ‘Indiewood’

Big-budget, but low-brow action movies are generally overlooked during awards season – instead, it’s those films that we might term “Indiewood”, independent-style films funded or distributed by specialist arms of the major studios, that tend to be celebrated. In 2019, two of the three English language films nominated for best director were distributed by major studios or their specialist arms. 'The Favourite' was distributed by Fox Searchlight, and 'BlacKkKlansman' was distributed by Focus Features, a subsidiary of Universal.

Independent filmmaking has, historically, offered more opportunities for women directors, and therefore the lack of women nominated for the Best Director award seems even more pronounced. Although figures for women working within the independent sector are less well publicised, the Celluloid Ceiling Report suggested that women are better represented in the independent sector, making up 23 per cent of the directors of narrative features screened at festivals in 2017 and 2018.

Statistics such as these demonstrate that women directors are working in the American industry, but the big studios are failing to hire them and the Academy is failing to recognise them.

Women directors slated for nods this awards season all made films that fall into the independent or Indiewood category: Debra Granik’s 'Leave No Trace', Lynne Ramsay’s 'You Were Never Really Here' and Marielle Heller’s 'Can You Ever Forgive Me'.

#OscarsSoMale

Anne Fletcher’s latest film 'Dumplin’ was independently produced and distributed by Netflix. Fletcher had box office success with mainstream rom-coms including '27 Dresses' (2008) and 'The Proposal' (2009) but after the failure of 'Hot Pursuit' it appears that she too has been pushed out of the mainstream.

'That Dumplin’ was distributed by Netflix, and 'You Were Never Really Here' was distributed by Amazon Studios, demonstrates that there are different outlets for women within the changing media culture – but there is still a lack of support for women in the mainstream – the big studios. And even those women who have had success in Hollywood are rarely recognised for their achievements.

The death of Penny Marshall in December was met with a public outpouring of grief via social media and popular press. She was hailed as a trailblazer as the first woman to make over $100 million at the American domestic box office with 'Big' (1988). But Marshall is not a household name. 'Big' is remembered as the film that made Tom Hanks’ name, not Marshall’s. Marshall is just the first in a long string of women who have changed Hollywood, but they are not recognised for their achievements.

The American film industry must do better – in hiring women directors, in rewarding women directors and in highlighting and protecting their legacies.

Oscar-nominated composer Alexandre Desplat will be unable to attend the Academy Award ceremony because of recent throat surgery.&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;

The French music composer, who is already a two-time Oscar winner for 2014's 'Grand Budapest Hotel'&nbsp;and 2017's 'The Shape of Water', is nominated this year for his Japanese-flavored score for Wes Anderson's 'Isle of Dogs'.

The composer had hoped to fly to LA for the Oscars ceremony, but doctors have advised him "to refrain from flying long distances at this stage of his recovery," Desplat's representative told Variety.

He is currently working on the score for 'The Secret Life of Pets 2'.

The other four original-score nominees --Terence Blanchard ('BlacKkKlansman'), Ludwig Goransson ('Black Panther'), Nicholas Britell ('If Beale Street Could Talk') and Marc Shaiman ('Mary Poppins Returns').

A foreign language film has never won the movie industry's most prestigious honour, the best picture Oscar. That may be about to change, if Mexican director Alfonso Cuaron's critically-acclaimed 'Roma'&nbsp;scores the big win on Sunday (February 24).

Shot entirely in Spanish and an indigenous Mexican language, 'Roma' broke out of the foreign language film category, scoring nominations, not only for best picture, but also director, lead and supporting actress, screenplay, and multiple technical fields.

Other foreign language-nominated films followed suit.

Florian Henckel von Donnersmark's 'Never Look Away', about a struggling artist in Nazi, and then Communist, eastern Germany, is also nominated for best cinematography. Poland's 'Cold War,'&nbsp;the story of a dark romance between a pianist and a singer, scored a best director nomination for Pawel Pawlikowski.

Whether the surge of interest in foreign language films is fleeting or sign of things to come split opinions at a reception on Thursday (February 21) celebrating the nominated foreign language films.

"This year, because of 'Roma,' I suppose, which is a huge film and by a director who is kind of familiar here as well, I think the foreign language has transcended its usual slot. But I think maybe it's an anomaly. I'm not sure it's a sign of massive changes," Pawlikowski told Reuters.

"I think the Academy has always been surprisingly open and ahead of its time in its internationality, so I just see this as a continuation of something that they've always been doing," said Henckel von Donnersmark.

Lebanese director Nadine Labaki, whose film 'Capernaum'&nbsp;tells the story of a 12-year-old boy in a Beirut slum, was more hopeful.

"I feel like it's changing, especially this year, you can see that the films that are in the foreign film category are really strong and everybody's talking about how strong this year is. So I think there's a change. There's some kind of shift," she said.

Japanese director Hirokazu Kore-eda said increased diversity in the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the group that hands out the Oscars, could see more recognition for international films.

"I actually have the right to vote as an Academy member as well and I think that when you get a greater variety of people being involved in the voting, then that's going to shift the result, I think," the "Shoplifters" director said.

The Academy Awards will be handed out on Sunday in a live ceremony. (Monday morning in India)
