The sixth edition of the Khelo India Winter Games was inaugurated today at the renowned Ski Resort of Gulmarg in the Kashmir Valley. The opening ceremony was attended by Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha. Around 900 athletes from 25 states and Union Territories have arrived in the Kashmir Valley to compete across eight winter sports disciplines being held in the Gulmarg region. Participants expressed immense enthusiasm about competing at the venue, describing Gulmarg as the finest destination in the country for winter sports due to its exceptional snow conditions.&nbsp;“It’s been a great experience. This is my sixth Khelo India Winter Games, and every year I see improvement in the management and organisation. It is a strong platform for athletes like us to move ahead and represent India at international events. The kind of snow we get to see in Gulmarg is unmatched anywhere else in the country. It truly is a wonderful stage for young athletes to showcase their talent,” said athlete Rajesh Kumar.&nbsp;This year’s edition has also witnessed a significant rise in female participation compared to the inaugural games. The steady increase in the number of women athletes highlights the growing inclusivity of winter sports in India.&nbsp;“It’s a great experience. This is my third Winter Games in Gulmarg, and the coordination and organisation have been excellent. Girls are now participating in every field, be it shooting, boxing, or skiing. When we first came here, there were very few girls; in skiing, there was only one athlete. Now, there are many participants from every state, including Jammu and Kashmir, and the level of competition has improved tremendously. Girls should feel inspired to win medals. We aim to eventually compete in the Olympics and bring laurels to the country,” said athlete Kusum Rana.&nbsp;Also Read - <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/indian-fans-slam-broadcaster-star-sports-cringe-promo-after-south-africa-crush-india-in-super-8-t20-world-cup-ahmedabad-1771833520487">Not cricket but Indian fans are upset at THIS reason after India’s 76-run loss</a>&nbsp;A young participant competing in her first event shared her excitement despite challenges. “It was my first event and I’m a beginner. Sports keep us fit and focused, and I believe more girls will join the Winter Games in the coming years.”&nbsp;Chief Minister Omar Abdullah also appreciated the increasing participation of women in the Games. He emphasised that Gulmarg has consistently proven to be the ideal host for winter sporting events in India, as reflected by the sixth consecutive edition being held there. He noted that with changing weather patterns, authorities may need to adopt modern techniques such as artificial snowmaking already used in international venues to sustain both winter sports and tourism in the region.&nbsp;Highlighting the importance of gender equality in sports, he remarked that winter sports provide a platform where men and women compete across nearly all disciplines.&nbsp;&nbsp;He stressed the need to strengthen facilities and infrastructure to nurture athletes capable of representing India at international competitions, including the Olympics. Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister and National Conference Vice President Omar Abdullah expressed deep concern over the prolonged delay in restoring statehood to the region, stating that hopes for its reinstatement are “fading with each passing day.” Speaking to reporters at the Civil Secretariat in Srinagar on Monday, Abdullah highlighted the mounting uncertainty surrounding the issue, which has lingered since the reorganisation of the erstwhile state in August 2019.&nbsp;“I had been expecting the return of statehood from day one after the 2019 changes,” Abdullah said. “But as time drags on, the prospects seem to dim further.” His remarks underscore the growing frustration among regional leaders and citizens awaiting the restoration of full statehood, a promise made by the central government following the abrogation of Article 370.&nbsp;Abdullah also addressed recent comments by National Conference MP Mian Altaf Ahmad Larvi, describing him as a respected, fatherly figure within the party. “I spoke to Mian Sahib over the phone, and he has not said anything wrong. His advice mirrors what my father would tell me, and I hold him in high regard,” the Chief Minister said. He emphasised the importance of resolving internal party matters privately, noting that he had urged Mian Altaf to discuss concerns directly with him rather than through public statements. “Anyone who wants to talk should come to me directly. We can sort things out without involving others,” he added.&nbsp;In a pointed remark, Abdullah drew a stark contrast between Mian Altaf and another party MP, Agha Syed Ruhullah Mehdi, who recently criticised the state government. “There is a difference between earth and sky when comparing the two,” Abdullah said, declining to elaborate further on Mehdi’s statements. “I will not talk about him. Where is Mian Altaf, and where is he?”&nbsp;Abdullah’s comments reflect both the internal dynamics within the National Conference and the broader political challenges facing Jammu and Kashmir as it navigates the complex path toward restored statehood.

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has announced plans to launch a door-to-door signature campaign advocating for the restoration of J&K’s statehood.

The Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir Omar Abdullah on Monday (July 14) broke through four security barricades and also jumped over a fence to reach the Mazar-e-Shuhda at Naqashbandh Sahab in Srinagar's Nowhatta area. He was joined by his top leadership of the party Including National Conference President Dr Farooq Abdullah.&nbsp;&nbsp;In a very dramatic way, the Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir reached the martyrs graveyard in Srinagar's downtown area. Omar Abdullah said, ''This is the physical grappling I was subjected to, but I am made of sterner stuff &amp; was not to be stopped. I was doing nothing unlawful or illegal. In fact, these “protectors of the law” need to explain under what law they were trying to stop us from offering Fatiha''.&nbsp;

This also became the first time Omar has confronted the centre directly. So far, he has always maintained a boundary but after today's incident he hit out at the LG Administration saying, “They claim this is a free country, but sometimes they think we are their slaves. We want to tell them we aren’t their slaves; we are slaves to our people,” Omar added.&nbsp;&nbsp;Meanwhile, the West Bengal's CM Mamata Banerjee also showed support to Omar Abdullah and said ''What is wrong in visiting the graveyard of martyrs? This is not only unfortunate, but it also snatches the democratic right of a citizen. What happened this morning to an elected Chief Minister Omar Abdullah is unacceptable. Shocking. Shameful''.&nbsp;The Martyrs Day is of profound significance commemorating the sacrifice of 22 civilians who were killed during protests against the Dogra regime in 1931. Before the abrogation of Article 370 in 2019, the day was officially recognised with state ceremonies and a public holiday. However, after the abrogation, the LG-led administration not only scrapped the holiday but also restricted access to the graveyard for political leaders on this particular day.&nbsp;&nbsp;Most of the political leaders in the Valley had alleged that they have been put under house arrest or security is not allowing them to move out of their premises. The former CM of Jammu and Kashmir Mehbooba Mufti took to social media and said, ''The day you accept our heroes as your own just as Kashmiris have embraced yours, from Mahatma Gandhi to Bhagat Singh that day, as Prime Minister Modi once said, the “dil ki doori” (distance of hearts) will truly end. When you lay siege to the Martyrs’ Graveyard, lock people in their homes to prevent them from visiting Mazar-e-Shuhada, it speaks volumes. July 13th commemorates our martyrs who rose against tyranny, much like countless others across the country. They will always be our heroes."&nbsp;&nbsp;Meanwhile, Omar Abdullah has also been criticised by some of the political parties and leaders for Monday's event. People's Conference Leader Sajad Lone said that, '' For a moment I was impressed. But now that you have given a ball-by-ball commentary of your so-called struggle in reaching the Martyrs Graveyard — I will bet my life. It was all scripted. I will still tell you. That the institution of Chief Minister is much bigger than the person of the incumbent Chief Minister. Please save this institution. Please step down. I will be the first person to follow you.''&nbsp;''That a security person will try to grapple or stop a chief minister is a humiliation for all of us. Don’t set a precedence which others will have to follow. A precedent of humiliation. These choreographed events are too predictable. Stop insulting the intelligence of common Kashmiri. There are two King’s parties in Kashmir. One gets to have a dramatic access a day before 13 July and the second one gets access a day after 13 July. Truly magical," he added.&nbsp;The Bhartiya Janata Party also took a dig at Omar Abdullah. The spokesperson of BJP Altaf Thakur said that it was a political drama. We all know that the National Conference has been in power for around nine months and they have not been able to deliver anything yet. '' Omar Abdullah wants to play an emotional card and come in the headlines again, with regard to July 13, we call it a black day. It was a day when Kashmiri pandits were looted, their shops were looted, and their houses were burnt and still Kashmiri pandits still remember this day as a loot day. We don't consider them martyrs. They were looters."

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Friday slammed Mehbooba Mufti for criticising his efforts to revive the Tulbul Navigation Project and termed it an attempt for &ldquo;cheap publicity&rdquo; and to &ldquo;appease certain sections&rdquo; in Pakistan.
The Tulbul Navigation Project to rejuvenate the Jhelum-fed Wular Lake in Bandipora district was started in 1987 but was stalled in 2007 after Pakistan raised objections.
Omar, who has always been critical of the Indus Waters Treaty while calling it &ldquo;deeply unfair&rdquo; to the people of J&amp;K, had sought revival of the Tulbul Navigation Project, which he said would enable the use of Jhelum water for navigation and improve power generation during harsh winters.

India News: Omar, who has always been critical of the Indus Waters Treaty, had sought revival of the Tulbul Navigation Project, which he said would enable the use of Jhelum water for navigation and improve power generation during harsh winters.

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Friday slammed Mehbooba Mufti for criticising his efforts to revive the Tulbul Navigation Project and termed it an attempt for “cheap publicity” and to “appease certain sections” in Pakistan. The Tulbul Navigation Project to rejuvenate the Jhelum-fed Wular Lake in Bandipora district was started in 1987 but was stalled in 2007 after Pakistan raised objections. Omar, who has always been critical of the Indus Waters Treaty while calling it “deeply unfair” to the people of J&K, had sought revival of the Tulbul Navigation Project, which he said would enable the use of Jhelum water for navigation and improve power generation during harsh winters. ‘They denied, then said India orchestrated it’: Omar slams Pak PM’s offer for ‘neutral’ probe into Pahalgam attack

Business & Economy: The timing of the attack couldn't be more economically devastating as it threatens to undo years of work building Brand Kashmir.

What began as a hopeful tourist season in Kashmir has taken a tragic and abrupt turn. On April 22, terrorists launched a deadly attack in the serene hill town of Pahalgam, killing 28 people—many of them tourists. In minutes, the meadow of pines and snow-draped peaks was transformed into a tableau of fear. Tourists, once crowding the bustling streets and valleys, were seen fleeing with their luggage, triggering the worst setback to Kashmir’s tourism economy in recent memory. Kashmir Tourism: Backbone for UT’s economy The attack comes at a time when Kashmir was riding a historic tourism wave. In 2024, Jammu and Kashmir saw its highest-ever footfall, with over 34.98 lakh tourists visiting the region. Of these, 5.17 lakh were pilgrims who completed the Amarnath Yatra, while international tourism recorded a massive revival—from just 1,614 visitors in 2021 to 43,654 in 2024. This growth is not only symbolic but vital: tourism contributes 8.47 per cent to the Union Territory’s GDP, according to the latest Economic Survey Report 2024–25 tabled by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah in the Assembly. Here’s a snapshot of Kashmir’s tourism growth over the last four years: Year Total Tourists Foreign Tourists 2021 6,65,777 1,614 2022 26,73,442 19,947 2023 31,55,835 37,678 2024 34,98,702 43,654 Source: Economic Survey Report 2024-25 The timing of the attack couldn't be more economically devastating. The summer season, which begins in late March and stretches until October, accounts for the lion’s share of Kashmir’s annual tourism income. Just before the attack, over 8.14 lakh visitors had thronged to Srinagar’s Tulip Garden—the largest in Asia—in the first 26 days of its opening on March 26. The garden had also attracted more than 3,000 international tourists, signaling that Kashmir was regaining its charm on the global map. Centre efforts to bring normalcy back in valley & building Kashmir brand The branding effort had not come easy. Since the revocation of Article 370, the Centre had gone all-in to reposition Kashmir as a secure, investor-ready alpine destination. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government had introduced a series of economic and promotional reforms tailored to transform the region’s conflict-ridden past into a tourism-driven future. This included the introduction of a new tourism policy with 75 heritage and spiritual sites, the rapid expansion of air and rail connectivity, and a ₹1,000 crore infrastructure boost. The Centre also actively wooed Bollywood and international filmmakers with a revamped film policy, hosted international marathons, and even held India’s first F4 car show in Srinagar. A major milestone was achieved in May 2023, when Srinagar hosted the G20 Tourism Working Group meeting. Over 60 international delegates participated, bringing global attention and perceived stability to the Valley. Events like the Khelo India Winter Games in Gulmarg and high-level investor summits were part of a larger strategic blueprint to privatize and modernize tourism, and position Kashmir as a new growth frontier. Now, all that momentum hangs in the balance. The Pahalgam attack has not only struck at the heart of the tourism economy but threatens to undo years of work building Brand Kashmir. Tour operators are reporting mass cancellations, hotels are emptying out, and transport services are facing sharp declines in demand. The cascading effect is already being felt by shikara operators, handicraft vendors, taxi drivers, and hoteliers—many of whom had taken loans post-COVID to scale up their services in anticipation of the peak season. For them, the blow is not just emotional—it’s financially crippling. The concern now is that the attack will once again reframe Kashmir in international headlines as a conflict zone, undermining the carefully cultivated perception of normalcy. International tourism, destination weddings, and foreign investments may all take a backseat as the global travel community re-evaluates safety concerns. For a region that had just begun to move beyond its troubled past, this attack is not only a humanitarian tragedy but a branding crisis of immense proportions. What happens next will be a test of both governance and narrative control. The government may need to deploy a combination of emergency economic relief and aggressive reputation management—ranging from financial support for local businesses to international PR efforts that reposition the region as safe for visitors and investors alike. Kashmir had almost succeeded in rebranding itself as India’s high-altitude economic miracle. But in the aftermath of the Pahalgam terror attack, it risks slipping back into silence, shadows, and scepticism—unless the political and economic response is swift, strategic, and visible.

Opposition political parties in Jammu and Kashmir are taking a dig at Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and National Conference Patron Farooq Abdullah for joining the Union Minority Minister Kiren Rijiju at Asia&rsquo;s largest Tulip Garden in Srinagar.

However, the political leaders in Jammu and Kashmir have started questioning Omar Abdullah, saying that the minority affairs minister introduced the Waqf bill in parliament and Abdullah is rolling out the red carpet for him.
People's conference leader Sajad Lone said, &ldquo;The least Muslims of India deserved was that in J&amp;K, the only Muslim majority province in India, the CM as a mark of protest stays away from Mr Kiren Rijju, who presented the Waqf bill. Instead, he tags along Farooq sahib as well. What a shame.&rdquo;
Former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir Mehbooba Mufti&rsquo;s daughter Iltija Mufti also criticised the move and said, &ldquo;What&rsquo;s left to say when the Chief Minister of India&rsquo;s only Muslim majority state gives a red-carpet welcome to the BJP minister who introduced the Waqf bill meant to disempower &amp; debilitate Muslims? Stands in stark contrast to Tamil Nadu CM who showed spine by swiftly introducing a resolution against Waqf bill.&rdquo;
Meanwhile, Mehbooba Mufti spoke about the Waqf motion not being allowed by the speaker in the J&amp;K Assembly. &ldquo;It&rsquo;s profoundly disappointing that the speaker of the J&amp;K Assembly has rejected the motion on the Waqf Bill. Despite securing a strong mandate, the government appears to have completely yielded to the BJP&rsquo;s anti-Muslim agenda, cynically attempting to appease both sides."
She further added, "The National Conference (NC) could learn from Tamil Nadu&rsquo;s government, which has firmly opposed the Waqf Bill. In J&amp;K, the only Muslim-majority region, it&rsquo;s alarming that a supposedly people-centric government lacks the courage even to debate this critical issue.&rdquo;

Stands in stark contrast to Tamil Nadu CM who showed spine by swiftly introducing a resolution against Waqf bill.” Meanwhile, Mehbooba Mufti spoke about the Waqf motion not being allowed by the speaker in the J&K Assembly. “It’s profoundly disappointing that the speaker of the J&K Assembly has rejected the motion on the Waqf Bill. Despite securing a strong mandate, the government appears to have completely yielded to the BJP’s anti-Muslim agenda, cynically attempting to appease both sides." She further added, "The National Conference (NC) could learn from Tamil Nadu’s government, which has firmly opposed the Waqf Bill. In J&K, the only Muslim-majority region, it’s alarming that a supposedly people-centric government lacks the courage even to debate this critical issue.”

<h2>Omar Abdullah visits Budhal</h2>
The Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, Omar Abdullah yesterday visited Budhal village to meet the families of the 17 individuals who tragically lost their lives in what the government has been calling mysterious deaths. Abdullah expressed profound grief and assured the bereaved families of full support and assistance from his government.
Omar Abdullah stressed that the government&rsquo;s priority is to ensure the prevention of such incidents in future and an immediate end to the spate of unfortunate deaths. He assured the public that a detailed investigation was underway to determine the cause of the tragedy.
&ldquo;The civil administration and health department are actively addressing the matter, while the police have constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate the incident. Additionally, a central team has been deputed and is working diligently to uncover the reasons behind this unfortunate loss of life,&rdquo; Omar Abdullah said.
The Jammu and Kashmir government consulted with many experts to understand what led to the deaths. Following extensive microbiological studies, they noted that no viral, bacterial or microbial infection had caused the deaths. These were found to be localised and possibly have some epidemiological linkage.
Certain neurotoxins were found in the samples of the deceased persons which will be further investigated.
It is pertinent to mention here that from December 7, 2024, about 17 of 38 affected persons have died in Budhal.
The tests were conducted on different samples in some of the most reputed labs in the country. These include the National Institute of Virology Pune, the National Centre for Disease Control New Delhi, the National Institute of Toxicology and Research Lucknow, Defence Research Development Establishment Gwalior, the Microbiology Department of PGIMER Chandigarh and the ICMR-Virus Research and Diagnostic Laboratory, GMC Jammu. &nbsp;

Jammu & Kashmir mysterious illness: Containment zones established in Rajouri's Budhal

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Thursday (Jan 9) said that there was a lack of clarity surrounding the INDIA alliance's leadership and agenda, and pointed out that no meetings of the opposition alliance have been organised.
He further said that, as per what was discussed earlier, there wasn't any time limit for the INDIA alliance, and if it was just set up for the parliamentary elections, then it must be dissolved now.
Abdullah made the remarks as he was responding to a question on the upcoming Delhi Assembly elections, where all three parties, AAP, BJP and Congress, are contesting against&nbsp; each other.
"I cannot say anything about this because we have nothing to do with Delhi elections. AAP, Congress and the other parties on the ground must decide how to combat the BJP," the J&amp;K CM was quoted as saying by news agency ANI.
"As far as I remember, there was no time limit to the INDIA alliance. Unfortunately, no INDIA alliance meeting is being organised, so there is no clarity about leadership, agenda, or our (INDIA bloc's) existence... They should wind up the alliance in case it was just for the Parliament elections," he added.&nbsp;
He further mentioned that AAP won the previous two state assembly elections in Delhi.
"This time we will have to wait for what the people of Delhi decide," he added.
It is pertinent to note that the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the Congress had formed an alliance along with other parties for the Lok Sabha elections several months ago.&nbsp;

<h2>'Alliance not confined to contesting elections,' says Farooq Abdullah</h2>
Meanwhile, former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Farooq Abdullah said that the alliance is not only confined to contesting elections.
"... As far as alliance is concerned, alliance exists in everything, and is not limited to contesting elections. The alliance exists to strengthen the country and remove this hatred from our country. Those who think it was just for Parliamentary elections, should come out of this misconception," he said.
The Delhi assembly polls will be held in a single phase on February 5 and the counting of votes will take place on February 8.

India’s Home Minister Amit Shah on Wednesday (Oct 24) met with the newly-elected chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir to discuss key issues. According to media reports, Shah assured CM Omar Abdullah that statehood will soon be granted to the union territory, fulfilling a promise made to the Supreme Court of India.

News agency PTI reported that Abdullah, who was on his first trip to the national capital after assuming office, discussed security issues related to the UT with home minister Shah. The meeting came after the Omar Abdullah government’s cabinet passed a resolution urging the central government to restore the territory’s statehood. The resolution was endorsed by Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha.

The erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir was divided into two Union Territories in August 2019, following the abrogation of Article 370 that&nbsp;guaranteed limited autonomy to the region.

Abdullah’s visit to Delhi drew criticism from local leaders in Kashmir.

People's Conference Chairman Sajjad Lone said the issue of statehood was just an excuse for the CM.

He had also questioned the J&amp;K government’s resolution on statehood, saying it was "shrouded in mystery and secrecy”. "We are not demanding or expecting anything extraordinary. Do what you promised the people of J&amp;K in your manifesto," Lone had said.

The People's Democratic Party (PDP) leader Iltija Mufti had also voiced her opposition to the resolution, calling it “utter surrender” before New Delhi.

Omar Abdullah, the chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir, stepped down from his position as the MLA for the Budgam constituency on Monday, opting to keep his Ganderbal seat, a stronghold of the National Conference (NC), after getting elected from both.

Omar Abdullah, the chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir, stepped down from his position as the MLA for the Budgam constituency on Monday, opting to keep his Ganderbal seat, a stronghold of the National Conference (NC), after getting elected from both. Ganderbal: Abdullah family's bastion Ganderbal has long been associated with the Abdullah family, with NC founder Sheikh Muhammad Abdullah representing the area in 1977 and Farooq Abdullah, the current party president, doing so in 1983, 1987, and 1996. Omar Abdullah, now 54, served as the Ganderbal MLA from 2008 to 2014 during his first term as Jammu and Kashmir's chief minister. Also read: Pannun's 'do not fly' Air India threat resurfaces amid hoax bomb calls In the 2024 Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections, Omar Abdullah secured the Ganderbal seat by defeating Bashir Ahmad Mir of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) with a margin of over 10,000 votes. Abdullah achieved victory in the Budgam constituency also, defeating his closest competitor, Aga Syed Muntazir Mehdi of the PDP, by 18,485 votes. Despite this win, he chose to resign from Budgam, reducing the National Conference's numbers in the 95-member assembly to 41. However, the party still maintains a comfortable majority with the support of six Congress MLAs, five Independents, and one member each from AAP and CPI(M). India: J&K CM Omar Abdullah resigns as Budgam MLA, chooses family stronghold Ganderbal

Indian Union Territory Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah's government has come under strong criticism after ignoring Articles 370 and 35a in the very first cabinet meeting of the UT's newly-appointed ministers. Sources in the government say that a resolution was passed by the Abdullah-led government on the restoration of statehood, but it did not mention anything about Articles 370 and 35a.&nbsp;

Abdullah along with his ministers is being criticised by the opposition parties in Jammu and Kashmir for only talking about statehood and ignoring Article 370. The political leaders said that Abdullah fought the election on the promise of restoration of Article 370 and statehood.&nbsp;

However, his government has conveniently ignored the issue of the special status of Jammu and Kashmir. The opposition leaders call it a betrayal on Abdullah's part as he asked for votes on the restoration of Article 370.

“It is very painful to learn that your cabinet has passed a resolution only on statehood and ignored article 370. It has been a principal stand of his party and it's very clear that Omar Abdullah is playing under the hands of BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party). If (Union Home Minister) Amit Shah and the Prime Minister have already said that they will return to statehood then why is he only talking about statehood and ignoring his main agenda? They fought the elections on Article 370 and now it seems there is a game going on between NC (National Conference) and BJP. &nbsp;He is running away from the main issue,” said Engineer Rashid, Member of Parliament (MP) Baramulla.&nbsp;

The People's Democratic Party (PDP) has also taken a dig at the Jammu and Kashmir CM for taking a U-turn on the promise he has made to the people of the Indian UT. MLA Pulwama Waheed Parra of PDP has said that statehood is already promised by Prime Minister Narendra Modi so why talk about that and ignore the issue of Article 370?

“The decision taken on August 5 2019 of revoking the special status of Jammu and Kashmir was against the wishes of the People of Jammu and Kashmir and first resolution which was promised by Omar Abdullah was to talk about Article 370, and now we have read that they have taken a resolution only on Statehood, which Prime Minister has already promised. BJP also demands the same. Kashmiris want the restoration of article 370 and unfortunately, Omar has taken a U-turn and also normalisation of the decision taken on August 5, 2019,” said Parra. &nbsp;

People's Conference chief and&nbsp;Handwara MLA, Sajad Gani Lone has also hit out at the Abdullah-led government, saying he failed to understand why this resolution should not have been reserved for the Assembly. He also said that by doing this it also trivialises these issues.&nbsp;

“Apparently the cabinet has passed a resolution on statehood. This is as per the headlines of an authentic newspaper based out of Jammu. In wonderment why should a resolution on statehood passed by the cabinet be shrouded in mystery and secrecy — that only one newspaper publishes it.

“I hope the CS of J and K has notified it as is the protocol. And I very humbly state that the will of the people of J and K is reflected in the Assembly and not in the cabinet. The Cabinet is a majoritarian institution of governance,” said Lone on social media.&nbsp;

He added, “It does not reflect all shades and opinions as per the will of the people of J and K. All across the country, to the best of my knowledge, the Assembly is the proper institution for addressing major issues like that of statehood or Article 370. When the NC Government passed a resolution on autonomy they passed it in the Assembly, not through a cabinet resolution. What has changed now. Fail to understand why this resolution should not have been reserved for the Assembly. Why are we so keen to trivialise everything? Would have loved to see which way BJP and other parties vote on statehood and on Article 370 resolution when it is presented in the Assembly.”

"And I am cutting and pasting a few lines out of the NC manifesto for 2024 Assembly elections. ‘Strive for the full implementation of the Autonomy Resolution passed by the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly in 2000. We strive to Restore 370-35A, and Statehood as prior to August 5 2019. In the interim period We will endeavour to redraft the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, 2019, and the Transaction of Business of the Government of Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir Rules, 2019. The Jammu and Kashmir assembly, in its first list of business after elections, will pass a resolution against the centre's decision to strip the region of its statehood and special status’. The last para says it all. We are not demanding or expecting anything extraordinary. Do what you promised the people of J and K in your manifesto,” said Lone added.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir, Manoj Sinha on Friday (Oct 18) allocated portfolios to the cabinet ministers in the government.&nbsp;

The order issued by Sinha said that in pursuance of rule 4(2) of the Transaction of Business of the Government of Union territory of Jammu and Kashmir Rules, 2019, 1, the Lieutenant Governor was assigned the charge of the Ministers.

The lieutenant governor's order said that Surinder Kumar Choudhary (Deputy Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir) will hold Public Works (R&amp;B), Industries &amp; Commerce, Mining, Labour &amp; Employment and Skill Development.&nbsp;

Sakeena Itoo will be given the charge of Health &amp; Medical Education, School Education, Higher Education and Social Welfare; Javed Ahmed Rana Jal Shakti, Forest, Ecology &amp; Environment and Tribal Affairs; Javid Ahmad Dar Agriculture Production, Rural Development &amp; Panchayati Raj, Cooperative, and Election.&nbsp;

Jammu-Kashmir: Omar Abdullah Takes Oath As Chief Minister, Congress To Provide Outside Support

Omar Abdullah was sworn in as the first chief minister of the union territory of Jammu and Kashmir on Wednesday (Oct 16). Right after taking over as the CM, Abdullah took to social media and said he had spoken to the DGP Jammu Kashmir Police and asked him that there should be no green corridor or traffic stoppage when his (CM's) cavalcade moves in the UT.

''I have spoken to the DG @JmuKmrPolice that there is to be no “green corridor” or traffic stoppage when I move anywhere by road. I have instructed him to minimise public inconvenience &amp; the use of sirens is to be minimal. The use of any stick waving or aggressive gestures is to be totally avoided. I’m asking my cabinet colleagues to follow the same example. In everything our conduct must be people-friendly. We are here to serve the people &amp; not to inconvenience them,'' Abdullah posted on X.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, in a historic ceremony held at the scenic SKICC on the banks of Dal Lake, Omar and&nbsp;five leaders were administered oath by J&amp;K Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, marking a significant political milestone for the region, which has been without an elected government for over six years.&nbsp;

Joining Abdullah in the new cabinet are Surinder Chowdhary, who will serve as deputy chief minister, along with ministers Sakina Itoo, Satish Sharma, Javaid Dar, and Javaid Rana.

The cabinet appointments reflect a strategic focus on inclusivity, with representation from both Jammu and Kashmir regions. Notably, Chowdhary, Rana, and Sharma hail from Jammu, while Itoo and Dar represent Kashmir. The National Conference-led government has intelligently given representation to every division and community.

''National Conference is a party that has always given equal importance to all the three regions. Those who point fingers should be asked why they don't have LG of Jammu and Kashmir from Jammu. This is for the first time that a deputy CM has been made from the Pir Panjal region. I am very thankful to the top leadership for giving representation to every division. The whole of Jammu and Kashmir has very high hopes from us and there is a gap of ten years, and we will have to do our best to solve the issues of people, '' said Chowdhary.

This momentous occasion comes after the last Assembly elections in 2014, following which the region underwent significant political changes, including the revocation of Article 370 in August 2019 by the central government. The National Conference emerged as the single largest party in the recent elections, securing 42 seats with additional support from independent MLAs and the CPI(M).&nbsp;

Omar Abdullah has also given one cabinet berth to a female MLA, Sakina Itoo. She represents the people of south Kashmir.

''The women are facing a lot of issues, and some issues are such that they cannot even express or talk about. We have to work a lot for them and solve the issues of women and men both in the coming time,'' said Itoo.&nbsp;

In a surprising twist, the Congress party decided not to join the ministry in the newly-formed coalition government in J&amp;K.

The Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC) GA Mir said that the, "Congress party has strongly demanded from the centre to restore statehood to J&amp;K, besides the prime minister has time and again in public meetings promised the same. But the statehood has not been restored to J&amp;K. We are unhappy therefore we are not joining the ministry at the moment."

''Why won't they restore statehood, it's not begging but the rights of the people of Jammu and Kashmir. The PM has been saying everywhere from Parliament and outside the parliament, during the campaigning also that statehood would be restored. They have to respect the mandate of the people. As a party, we won't enter the cabinet at this stage,&nbsp;let us wait till PM will respond as he has committed that after the election statehood would be restored. Now there is no issue pending that he will not give us the state, let's wait for the time being and we will discuss it later," said G A Mir, AICC General Secretary.

The ceremony was attended by prominent leaders from the INDIA bloc, including Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, AICC Chief Mallikarjun Kharge, and General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Akhilesh Yadav, D Raja. Their presence underscored the importance of this political transition in Jammu and Kashmir.

''I have come to Srinagar to convey my party, the Communist party's good wishes to Omar Abdullah. It's going to be a good beginning for the Jammu and Kashmir region. However, political analysts suggest that the concerns over the political standing of the National Conference on Article 370 have kept Congress away from joining the government. It is believed that Congress wanted to keep itself away from any controversy in view of the upcoming assembly polls in Maharashtra and Jharkhand.

''Right now, we are part of the government, and we have given support to the government. All the congress legislators have given support, and it was a decision taken by high command. If we are not ministers in the cabinet that does not mean we are not part of the government,'' said Irfan Hafeez Lone, MLA, Congress Party.
