A petition has been filed against former chief ministers of Jammu and Kashmir Mehbooba Mufti, Omar Abdullah and other political leaders for allegedly opposing the abrogation of Article 370.

An advocated in Betia Court Murad Ali has filed the case under charges of sedition and criminal conspiracy for opposing the scrapping of the Article which has recently been scrapped through Presidential order.

"I have filed a case against former chief ministers of Jammu and Kashmir Mehbooba Mufti, Omar Abdullah and other political leaders who have opposed the abrogation of Article 370," Ali told ANI.

"I have filed the case under Section 124 A (sedition), 153 A (promoting enmity between different groups of religion, race, place of birth, residence and language), 153 B, 504 (Intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace) and 120B (criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code," he said.

Ali said that the court heard his case and transferred the case to the court of Judicial Magistrate KK Shahi.

Next hearing in the case is on September 24. In the complaint, Ali has alleged that Mufti and Omar opposed the scrapping of the Article which has created a rage for the Indian Government through print, electronic and social media.

"They attempted to create enmity among the citizens of other states of India. They have hurt the integrity and unity of the nation. They have done the work of disturbing national integrity and peace," he said.

The right-wing supporters of BJP and RSS expected the Modi 2.0 government to walk the talk on Uniform Civil Code, Article 370, Article 35A, Ram Temple, Hindu rashtra, and other ideological issues. Through this, the BJP has fulfilled one of its long-standing promise.

In its 2019 poll manifesto, it had mentioned, “We reiterate our position since the time of the Jan Sangh to the abrogation of Article 370.” Through this act, it consolidates its core vote bank, who have stood by the party through thick and thin. It establishes the one nation, one constitution principle.&nbsp;

As BJP MP Swapan Dasgupta put it in Rajya Sabha, the repeal of Article 370 establishes the political sovereignty of the Indian Parliament to whole of India without making any exception for J&amp;K.&nbsp;

The stunned opposition was clueless and ill-prepared despite these rumours doing the rounds for the last few days. Congress leader P Chidambaram called the move a “constitutional monstrosity” and warned other states against “future moves to dismember them”.

The move has the potential of making local political parties irrelevant. The National Conference (NC) and People’s Democratic Party (PDP) have opposed the move. The Abdullahs and Muftis (dynasts) have been ruling the state for decades since Independence and exploited the local sentiments for their political benefit.&nbsp;

On expected lines, Omar Abdullah termed the decision as disastrous, illegal and unconstitutional. He alleged that the Government of India resorted to deceit and stealth and this is an aggression on the people of J&amp;K.

Mehbooba Mufti, meanwhile, termed it as the darkest day in Indian democracy. She slammed the unilateral decision of the Government of India to scrap Article 370, which will make India an occupational force in J&amp;K.&nbsp;

Both these leaders have been put under house arrest. PDP has been accused of being soft on separatists even during the brief rule of PDP-BJP combine in the state. There is a risk that since the PDP and NC face an existential threat, they could join hands with separatist groups to fan unrest in the Valley. It could also force the two Valley parties to form an alliance in state elections to take on the BJP.

Many critics feel that politically this move amounts to an assault on the Muslim identity of J&amp;K. The RSS has always believed that the only way to resolve Kashmir issue is through a sweeping demographic change in the state, facilitated by the integration of the Valley with the rest of country.&nbsp;

Political parties across the spectrum, including the BSP, BJD, YSRCP, AAP, TRS and the TDP supported the repeal of Article 370. It is a good sign for the Indian democracy and highlights the fact that on issues of national interest, parties cutting across political spectrum and irrespective of ideology, can come together and work unitedly. Arvind Kejriwal hoped it would bring peace in the Kashmir Valley.&nbsp;

JD (U)’s opposition, though, is a cause of concern for the BJP, especially with the Bihar Assembly elections due next year. The party earlier opposed the Triple Talaq Bill as well. JD (U) is not part of the Union Cabinet and shares a love-hate relationship with the BJP. There are also rumours that Nitish could go back to Lalu’s RJD, which could weaken BJP’s chances in Bihar. After reorganisation, de-limitation could be the next thing that the BJP comes up with. Kashmir has 46, Jammu 37 and Ladakh four seats, implying that the party securing a majority in the Valley has been dominating the political scene in the state.&nbsp;

The people of Jammu and Ladakh have for years, alleged discrimination and lack of development. In terms of area as well as voter population per seat, Jammu is much bigger compared to the Kashmir Valley.

As per reports, de-limitation could increase seats of Jammu by 10-15, bringing it at least on par with Kashmir. Reservation of seats for the SC/ST community is also likely to be introduced.&nbsp;

BJP hopes to sweep the Jammu region, as and when elections are held, and instal a first non-Kashmiri and Hindu chief minister in the state. Even if PDP and NC join forces and win the elections, the issue is that the chief minister of a Union Territory doesn’t enjoy the same powers as other states. In Delhi, Kejriwal has been fighting for absolute powers and alleging how the BJP has been meddling in the affairs of the state through the Lieutenant Governor. So, the old days of Abdullahs and Muftis may never return. The BJP at the Centre will have the reins of power of the state.

In the recent past, the BJP has got UAPA/RTI Amendment Bill and the Triple Talaq Bill passed in the House of Elders despite not having a majority. The J&amp;K Reorganisation Bill was introduced first in Rajya Sabha and not in Lok Sabha. This reflects the BJP’s confidence after winning a brute majority in May, using far superior floor management skills.&nbsp;

It also shows that India is now not only Congress-mukt, but also opposition-mukt. The BJP has now occupied the dominant position once held by the Congress in India’s political space.&nbsp;

Now, over to courts as the decision is likely to be challenged!

Meanwhile, the Congress moved an adjournment motion in both the lower and upper houses&nbsp;ahead of the opening of the Parliament session today.

Mobile internet services have been suspended in the state and all educational institutes have been shut in Srinagar until further orders. However, schools will reopen normally today in Ladakh region after summer vacations with classes resuming normally in colleges and other educational institutions.

Restrictions under Section 144 CrPC has&nbsp;not been imposed in the Ladakh region.

On Friday, the Army had said that Pakistani terrorists were plotting to carry out an attack on the ongoing Amarnath Yatra and that the security forces had recovered a Pakistan Ordnance Factory anti-personnel mine from a terror cache.

In a joint press conference, the forces displayed an M-24 sniper rifle, anti-personnel landmines recovered from the Pakistani Army along with a telescope from a terror cache along the Amarnath route.

Subsequently, the Amarnath yatra was cancelled and tourists were ordered to leave.

Modi government Tuesday scored a major victory in the Rajya Sabha when the House passed the Triple Talaq Bill after rejecting the opposition`s demand to refer the Bill to the Select Committee and to remove the criminality clause.

The Bill was passed with 99 members in its favour while 84 members voted against it in the final division. In the division on referring the Bill to the Select Committee, the government got 100 votes while 84 voted against.

The BJP-led NDA government, which does not have a majority in the Upper House, still managed to have smooth sailing for the contentious bill because parties like AIADMK, which has 11 members and JDU, with six, walked out after recording their opposition to the Bill. The BJD supported the Bill.&nbsp;

Twitter war breaks out between Mufti, Omar over passage of triple talaq bill in Rajya Sabha

Jammu and Kashmir governor Satya Pal Malik announced ex-gratia of Rs 5 Lakh each to the next of the kin of the deceased and Jammu and Kashmir's Kishtwar accident on Sunday.

At least 35 people lost their lives in Kishtwar district after a minibus fell into a gorge while it was travelling from Keshwan. Seventeen people have also been injured in the incident and are now being treated in a nearby hospital.

The incident took place after the driver of the minibus lost control and the vehicle fell into a gorge.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolence to the families of the deceased and said that the accident is "heart-wrenching".

"The accident in Jammu and Kashmir's Kishtwar is heart-wrenching. We mourn all those who lost their lives and express condolences to the bereaved families. May the injured recover at the earliest," PM Modi said on Twitter.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah said that he is "extremely saddened" by the incident and will "pray for the speedy recovery" of those who were injured.

"Extremely saddened to learn about the loss of lives due to a road accident in Kishtwar, Jammu and Kashmir," Amit Shah said, adding, "My deepest condolences to the families of those who lost their loved ones."&nbsp;

"I pray of the speedy recovery of those injured," he also said.

Former Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti also offered her condolences and tweeted, " Saddened to hear about the tragic accident in Kishtwar. Deepest condolences to families of the bereaved".

Omar Abdullah, Jammu &amp; Kashmir National Conference leader, also condoled the accident and offered prayers for the swift recovery of the injured through his Twitter account.

"Terrible news coming in about the high death toll in a bus accident in Kishtwar. Condolences to the families of the deceased &amp; prayers for the swift recovery of the injured," he tweeted.

At least 35 people lost their lives in Kishtwar district after a minibus fell into a gorge while it was travelling from Keshwan. Seventeen people have also been injured in the incident and are now being treated in a nearby hospital. May the injured recover at the earliest," PM Modi said on Twitter. Union Home Minister Amit Shah said that he is "extremely saddened" by the incident and will "pray for the speedy recovery" of those who were injured. "Extremely saddened to learn about the loss of lives due to a road accident in Kishtwar, Jammu and Kashmir," Amit Shah said, adding, "My deepest condolences to the families of those who lost their loved ones." "I pray of the speedy recovery of those injured," he also said. Former Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti also offered her condolences and tweeted, " Saddened to hear about the tragic accident in Kishtwar. Deepest condolences to families of the bereaved". They allege the authorities denied&nbsp;them travel to visit their families in Pakistan and Pakistan occupied Kashmir(POK), even some of them have been divorced by their Kashmiri husbands, leaving them with no option. Some even face domestic abuse.

"We are at least 300 to 350 women here. We haven't been able to return back or visit our families there. Some have committed suicide due to depression. We haven't been able to travel back, even today, my sister is getting married and I am here, protesting," says Toiba, a resident of Abbottabad.

"We aren't state subjects, we don't have a local identity card. My three kids ask me regularly when will we go to Pakistan to meet my grandmother? I have left my nine-year-old daughter in Pakistan due to some document issue," says Nabeela while holding her daughter.&nbsp;

Everyone is familiar with the first one at Pulwama which tragically caused forty fatalities of CRPF personnel and commenced a spiral of escalation with Pakistan, almost leading to war. The second one at Banihal, less than a month ago, is less known to the public although the media has highlighted it but without too much emphasis on the implications. It was a failed attempt by a lone wolf operative probably backed by a full network of terror. The vehicle along with explosives packed in it caught fire and was burnt down once the detonation mechanism apparently failed; the local terrorist was caught next day attempting to sneak back to the Valley from the south of Pir Panjal. It was enough to send the establishment into a tizzy with the possibility of more such attempts.

Just after the Pulwama incident, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) attempted different measures to reduce the footprint of vehicular movement so as to offer lesser opportunity to terrorists to target security forces’ vehicles. This included a high profile announcement of a move to authorise CRPF personnel commercial air travel between Srinagar and Jammu at government expense. A proactive decision no doubt which was much appreciated but reflected little knowledge of the reality of dynamics of security forces deployment, their logistics and movement pattern in Kashmir. After Banihal comes another announcement in aid of securing the movement of personnel in vehicles. This time the National Highway from Udhampur to Baramulla, has reportedly been reserved for movement of only army and police vehicles on Sundays and Wednesdays. No civilian vehicle is being permitted to ply from 4 AM in the morning till 7 PM in the evening on the notified days. It is being hoped that this will completely neutralise the feasibility of car bombs being rammed into a vehicle of the convoy.

As per most media analyses, if the earlier decision after Pulwama was a travesty of understanding of threats in J&amp;K the one reserving days for the army and police movement makes it even worse by its complete lack of sensitiveness. How right is this thinking and are such arrangements justified? A writ petition in J&amp;K High Court against the government direction on the restricted movement of civilian traffic is already under examination with the court asking the government to examine more options for secure convoy movement without disturbing civilian traffic.&nbsp;

There are a couple of facts which need highlighting. The first is that with the MHA decision on air travel it appeared that the CRPF, which functions under the MHA, is the only threatened entity in J&amp;K. Little is it realised that the Army mans the entire LoC and major parts of J&amp;K’s rural countryside; it’s controlling ministry the MoD did not think it fit to offer even a token gesture of permitting its personnel movement by commercial air.&nbsp; &nbsp;How can personnel under the Government of India, involved in near similar tasks and facing common threats be given different treatment? A practical look at the situation and method of movement will reveal the impossibility of securing personnel through such a gesture. Logistics is far more complicated than mere movement of troops in vehicles. The Army's system of supplies, catering to warlike situations, stretches all the way back to the hinterland and caters for stocking up to variable periods till 210 days, thus entailing a massive movement of convoys for at least six months in summer. The Ladakh region is stocked for the entire winter by using routes for large convoys running through the Kashmir Valley.&nbsp;

The recent chain of events and the media reporting has led to a mistaken belief that the Jammu-Srinagar convoy of the CRPF is the only major security movement in J&amp;K. Within the Valley, almost ten army convoys move every day and each one has personnel, supplies and stores with protection vehicles against possible ambush. The BSF has a few too. Thus both measures by the MHA, air travel by CRPF personnel and earmarking of convoy days with no civilian vehicular move, can only partially ameliorate the threat because there are thousands of other security personnel on the move and many more convoys than just those between Udhampur and Baramulla.

One cannot be entirely critical of the government's decision on earmarked days for convoy movement without any civilian movement. Challenging situations sometimes do demand very uncomfortable decisions. Obviously, the Banihal failed car bomb raised hackles of concern on how soon after Pulwama a second attempt was made with impunity. One can imagine the implications if like Pulwama there were once again a large number of fatal casualties. The spiral of escalation with Pakistan may have gone through the roof. However, the question is whether the current security measures have been adequately thought through. Former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah tweeted his observation when he found the movement of military convoys on the Srinagar - Uri road on days not earmarked for them. The reality is that military movement in and to the Valley cannot remain restricted. Contingencies being such; terrorist threats, climatic conditions and civilian street turbulence all combine to prevent any rigidity such as fixed days for convoys and other military movement. The two days on which movement of civilian traffic is banned are therefore essentially days on which convoys will possibly be dedicated to maximum personnel movement while on other days balance of logistics, not involving groups of personnel in large numbers, will move. This is the only explicable rationale of the decisions recently taken. However, they have caused much bitterness in Kashmir. The problem with our system remains our inability to take the public into confidence or have even a modicum of consultation with it. Some public articulation was necessary to tell the public in no uncertain terms that trends in terrorism result in discomfort to the common people and that full rights of the people cannot be guaranteed under the prevailing extraordinary circumstances. A similar warning through media could also be repeatedly given against stone-throwing being done by ISI sponsored mobs to prevent the conduct of anti-terrorist operations. The problem in Kashmir is that while alienated people support terrorists they also demand full rights for themselves, little realising that people in proxy conflict zones can rarely enjoy the same rights as people in peaceful areas.&nbsp;

The above is no justification for the recent decision but a more plausible explanation. With approaching summer, movement of convoys will increase causing more stringent measures leading to enhanced levels of alienation, exactly what the adversary wishes. Can better measures be thought through? Ban on movement of vehicles with less than three passengers is a possible way as suicide mode of execution can ill afford more than a lone wolf. In 2011 on public request, the Army moved its convoys from Srinagar outside timings of normal public movement. That measure can, however, decongest the road only near Srinagar. It’s a complex security issue we face and much more deliberation with some flexibility may meet the requirement, at least for some time.&nbsp;

In J&K, government faces the challenge of safe movement of soldiers

Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Monday said there will be no option with the government other than abolishing articles 370 and 35A related to special status to Jammu and Kashmir in the Constitution if there is a demand for a separate Prime Minister for the terrorism-affected state.

His reaction came a week after National Conference leader Omar Abdullah had said that his party will strive hard for restoring the autonomy of Jammu and Kashmir that could include having a 'Sadar-e-Riyasat' (President) and 'Wazir-e-Azam' (Prime Minister).

Addressing a BJP election rally here, Rajnath Singh asked the Congress to clarify its stand whether or not it supports the demand and said "such things" must be stopped.&nbsp;

"Someone who has been chief minister for a long time has said that there should be a Prime Minister in Jammu and Kashmir. If someone talks like that, we will have no option other than abolishing Article 370 and Article 35A," the minister said.

Singh said Congress must make it clear whether it accepts that the country should have two prime ministers.

"Such things can not go on and on. It has to be stopped," he said&nbsp; 
On terrorism, the home minister said a befitting reply would be given to those who take up arms. "If someone takes up arms, we can go to whatever extent required to give them a befitting reply," Singh said.

He said the country is now in the "strong hands" of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The home minister said the central government was ready for talks but those who are raising the Kashmir issue were not interested in any dialogue.

Singh said considering the future of the children of Jammu and Kashmir, "we have forgiven 8,000 first time stone pelters but some people continue to instigate the stone pelters".

"These are the biggest criminals," he said.&nbsp;

The home minister said Jammu and Kashmir has not been ruled by "outsiders" but by political parties like NC, PDP or Congress for long.

Singh also highlighted the development works undertaken by the NDA government in Jammu and Kashmir.

"We have given highest assistance to Jammu and Kashmir," he said.

National Conference leader Omar Abdullah Thursday termed the order banning civilian traffic on the Jammu-Kashmir highway for two days a week as "unprecedented" and demanded its "immediate revocation".

Addressing an election campaign rally at Rafiabadin in north Kashmir's Baramulla district, Abdullah said closing the highway was a glaring admission of failure by the government in managing the state's internal security and a direct consequence of the PDP's tie-up with the BJP.

He also accused the Peoples Democratic Party and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of practising "opportunistic politics".

"The embrace of PDP with BJP wreaked havoc on the security situation in the state. It is for the first time in history that highways are being closed for civilian traffic for two days," the former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister said.

"This is an unprecedented situation and has never happened in the last three decades," he added.

Abdullah was reacting to a government order banning the movement of civilian vehicles on the 300-km long highway on Sundays and Wednesdays between 4 am and 5 pm to ensure safe passage of security forces' vehicles.

The restrictions will remain in force till May 31.

The NC vice president further said that the state had faced dire security situation since 1989 but the highways were never shut.

"The state has witnessed numerous attacks on its vital installations for the last 30 years, but barring civilian traffic from highways is unprecedented and has never happened before," he said.

"This imprudent order therefore needs to be revoked immediately," he added.

"How will the patients who are referred to city hospitals reach SMHS or SKIMS? Why should students suffer who will be not be able to attend schools? How will people reach to their places of work? What will happen to those who are faced with any other emergencies?," he said further.&nbsp;

Abdullah was reacting to a government order banning the movement of civilian vehicles on the 300-km long highway on Sundays and Wednesdays between 4 am and 5 pm to ensure safe passage of security forces' vehicles. "This is a very regressive step. In Kashmir everyone wears Pheran, it is part of our culture. Ladakhi people wear their attire and in south India, people wear Lungi, then why just Pheran?" National Conference Spokesperson, Tanvir Sadiq told media.&nbsp;

"We have grown in Pheran, we have seen our parents and grandparents wearing it. Now, if someone dictates us that we shouldn't wear Pheran, it will be treated as part of aggression," said Social activist Babar Qadri.&nbsp;

In the city of Srinagar, there are many shops dedicated only to making Pherans which customise them according to the need and demand of customers. According to the shopkeepers, the demand for Pheran&nbsp;has only gone up over the years.&nbsp;

"We have grown in Pheran, we have seen our parents and grandparents wearing it. According to the shopkeepers, the demand for Pheran has only gone up over the years.

National Conference leader Omar Abdullah Monday ruled out a pre-poll alliance with any party for the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections, saying his party had joined hands with the PDP and Congress to "save the state".

The PDP had on November 21 staked claim to form a government with the backing of rival National Conference (NC) and the Congress. This was followed by another bid from the two-member People's Conference which claimed the support of the BJP and 18 MLAs from other parties.

After these developments, Governor Satyapal Malik abruptly dissolved the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly on the night of November 21.

"We will fight the (assembly) election on our own. When we talk about forming the next government on our own, then there is no scope of leaving any seat for anyone, even as I know they are eyeing some seats," Abdullah said Monday while addressing a function at party headquarters here.

Defending his party's decision to join hands with the PDP and Congress to stake a claim for the formation government, the NC vice president said it was a difficult decision, taken to save the state after fighting as bitter rivals in the 2014 elections.

"We decided to do something to save the state, to strengthen the communal harmony and brotherhood, to restore peace - it was not an easy decision. I was aware that my party will suffer politically due to this decision," he said.

Asserting that he choose the state over his party, as it was for the betterment of Jammu and Kashmir and its people, Abdullah said the NC was to extend support to the PDP and Congress from outside and the government was to run for the time being till the situation gets back to normal for holding of fresh elections.

He called for holding of assembly polls in the state along with the general elections next year, and also challenged the BJP to announce its chief ministerial candidate while accusing the saffron party of betraying the people of Jammu region who had given it 26 seats in the last state elections.

The NC vice president said his party is prepared to face the people, unlike the BJP which is "trying to delay the elections on one pretext or the other knowing fully that it will face a drubbing in polls".

"We have started the selection of candidates for the state polls. The only condition is, give me a candidate who can win. There may be some seats where we have no chance, but there are seats which we have been winning and the time has come to take these seats back," the former chief minister said.

He said the BJP claimed that the plan to form the government was orchestrated in Dubai and London at the behest of Pakistan.

"We were not the one. But the second letter (from Peoples Conference chairman Sajad Lone) came from London," Abdullah said.

"When I asked him (Ram Madhav) to prove (the allegation), he took his words back, because he was caught in his own lies," he said.

BJP general secretary Ram Madhav on November 22 withdrew his words after a furious Omar Abdullah dared him to prove his allegation that his party had tied up with the PDP to form a government in Jammu and Kashmir at Pakistan's behest.

Abdullah said the PDP-Congress-NC combine had the numbers and there was no scope for horse-trading or any other malpractice here, unlike the BJP-supported group which had only 28 MLAs together.

The governor claimed that there were horse-trading attempts, he said and asked the BJP where did the other MLAs require to form the government came from.

"I can say with authority that the MLAs got threats from agencies. One MLA was told that either be part of the government for two years or prepare for arrest by NIA.

"Another senior MLA was threatened that a CBI case against him will be opened. This is the problem, those who are not able to come from the front door, are trying to grab the power by breaking the back door like a thief," Abdullah said."

"The compulsion when they (BJP) handed over the chief minister post to Mufti Mohammad Sayeed is understood as they had 26 MLAs while the PDP had 28. But how they can justify bringing a chief minister from a two-member party," he said.

The NC vice president claimed that the BJP will face a drubbing in the next assembly elections given the mood of the people.

"When the bugle for assembly elections is sounded, we will emerge as winners," he said.

"Our strategy will be -- to highlight the failures of the previous government and to reach out to the people and make them aware about the programmes and planning of the party for different sections of the society, besides focusing on basic amenities like water, power and roads," Abdullah said.

Jammu and Kashmir People's Conference chairman Sajjad Gani Lone on Friday said that PDP-Congress-NC formed 'opportunistic alliance' to stall government of third-front led by People's Conference.&nbsp;

The three parties between them had the numbers needed to form a government. (There was also a rival claim from Sajjad Lone of the People's Conference. Lone said he had the backing of the BJP.)&nbsp;

'Good luck to us': Omar Abdullah day after Governor dissolves J&K assembly

What started as a bang and great hope has ended in a great tragedy in Kashmir. The attempt to bridge Jammu with Kashmir has ended in a disaster. Today Kashmir is back to square one. The civilian life stands disrupted.&nbsp;

The modicum of normalcy which existed prior to 2014 lies completely shattered. Though every development in Kashmir cannot be heaped on BJP but the party is surely to be blamed for the response it came up with months after months.&nbsp;

Kashmir became an experiment shop for the nationalist narrative. Unnecessary debates dominated the tenure of the PDP-BJP development.&nbsp;

Whether it was the state flag, Article 370, Article 35(A) - unnecessary controversies dominated the tenure of the regime. The worst disservice was that Army was brought into Kashmir issue as a political agent. Indian Army’s view became another pillar in the conversation which was already suffering from political McCarthyism.

Unfortunate thing is that Army’s view was never an issue but their position on certain issues was continuously milked to attack and discredit the Opposition. It played out well for the audience in the heartland but ended up alienating average Kashmiri and adding strain on the alliance which ultimately cracked because of the inherent contradictions. Both of them were unnatural partners who were ideologically opposed and represented opposed social constituencies.

Despite unending failure at every level, BJP still thought of something unimaginable. It thought of pushing Sajad Lone as the CM face and tried to encourage defections. It pushed the narrative of 'Third Party' in a play where none existed. The push prompted political reorganisation by National Conference (NC), PDP and Congress. Whether it was fear, hard political compulsion or matter of survival, it spooked the BJP. The worst fear of BJP came into existence like wildfire. The real issue was what if 'Grand Alliance' becomes a reality in J&amp;K? Will it have an impact on elections?&nbsp;

These are conjunctures, but the fact remains that the BJP’s incessant push to remain in power through backdoor created an alignment which neither of them was interested in.

There is no doubt that PDP and NC are not the best of partners, but they have more ideological similarity than what is shared between BJP and PDP. This is the tragedy with which the nation will have to deal with in the longer run. A Kashmir which is more fragile, more alienated and less safe and all cannot be blamed on the enemy across the border. Some responsibility also lies with BJP.

The civilian life stands disrupted. The modicum of normalcy which existed prior to 2014 lies completely shattered. Though every development in Kashmir cannot be heaped on BJP but the party is surely to be blamed for the response it came up with months after months. Kashmir became an experiment shop for the nationalist narrative. Unnecessary debates dominated the tenure of the PDP-BJP development. Whether it was the state flag, Article 370, Article 35(A) - unnecessary controversies dominated the tenure of the regime. The worst disservice was that Army was brought into Kashmir issue as a political agent. Indian Army’s view became another pillar in the conversation which was already suffering from political McCarthyism. Unfortunate thing is that Army’s view was never an issue but their position on certain issues was continuously milked to attack and discredit the Opposition. It played out well for the audience in the heartland but ended up alienating average Kashmiri and adding strain on the alliance which ultimately cracked because of the inherent contradictions. Both of them were unnatural partners who were ideologically opposed and represented opposed social constituencies. Despite unending failure at every level, BJP still thought of something unimaginable. It thought of pushing Sajad Lone as the CM face and tried to encourage defections. It pushed the narrative of 'Third Party' in a play where none existed. The push prompted political reorganisation by National Conference (NC), PDP and Congress. Whether it was fear, hard political compulsion or matter of survival, it spooked the BJP. The worst fear of BJP came into existence like wildfire. The real issue was what if 'Grand Alliance' becomes a reality in J&K? Will it have an impact on elections? These are conjunctures, but the fact remains that the BJP’s incessant push to remain in power through backdoor created an alignment which neither of them was interested in. There is no doubt that PDP and NC are not the best of partners, but they have more ideological similarity than what is shared between BJP and PDP. Ram Madhav, National General Secretary of the Bharatiya Janata Party on Thursday took back his comment that the alliance between PDP, Congress and National Conference was made on Pakistan's behest after Omar Abdullah asked him to prove his allegation.&nbsp;

Ram Madhav takes back his 'Pakistan behind J&K alliance' comment after Omar dare

Prime Minister Imran Khan-led Pakistan government must to do some soul searching on India's legitimate concerns to make way for a process of engagement on Kashmir, National Conference leader Omar Abdullah has said.

The senior Kashmiri politician said that while a one-off summit-based approach is not the answer, any hopes of a proper dialogue on the issue, "insulated from forces that are inimical to a dialogue on both sides of the border", would have to wait to be realised at the end of India's general election cycle in May 2019.

"While we are going through our election process, I think Pakistan needs to do a bit of soul searching in terms of addressing legitimate concerns that India has," he said.

The former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister, who was in London to participate in an event organised by the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) around changing the narratives within the India-Pakistan bilateral context, said the Pakistan government's decisions such as letting Lashkar-e-Taiba founder Hafiz Saeed "roam free" had proved a setback to the much-needed confidence building measures.

"The recent decision of the Imran Khan government to release 20 stamps on Kashmir does not help, when instead of confidence building measures we have steps that break confidence,"Abdullah said on the sidelines of the event in London on Friday.

The release of some 20 postal stamps, glorifying Kashmiri militant Burhan Wani and others, by Pakistan was one of the reasons India cited to call of a proposed meeting between External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj and her Pakistani counterpart Shah Mehmood Qureshi in New York in September.

"Pakistan is our neighbour; whatever concerns we have with Pakistan, we have accepted that war is not an option. So, the only option available to us is talks. We need to resolve our differences through dialogue. But for that, at some stage, Pakistan will also have to take India's concerns on board," he said.

Abdullah also lamented the "vast gap" between the Government of India and its representative in Jammu and Kashmir Governor Satya Pal Malik, and the youth of J&amp;K, which needs to be narrowed urgently.

He said: "The youth of Jammu and Kashmir are perhaps more alienated today than they have been since the early 1990s; when educated youngsters and people with secure jobs are joining the ranks of militancy. And that's a very worrying sign.

"At the moment, it is about hoping that some smaller corrective measures can be taken now to reduce the levels of alienation, with a higher degree of engagement once we are through with this election cycle."&nbsp;

AS Dulat, former Intelligence Bureau (IB) Special Director and former Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) chief who was among the participants at the IISS event, also expressed hope that dialogue would be re-initiated between India and Pakistan soon.

"We should talk and never stop talking. I remain optimistic on a solution in Kashmir," said Dulat, who pointed to former Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf's four-point formula dating back to 2006 as a "good starting point".

"If that agreement had been worked out between (Gen Pervez) Musharraf and Dr Manmohan Singh, my assessment is that we would have had at least 15 years of peace in Kashmir," he said.

Congress party spokesperson Manish Tewari explained that the aim of the London event was to explore the building blocks of a narrative which can correct perceptions that India and Pakistan have about each other.

"There is a feeling that confidence building measures and the creation of a positive narrative have to precede conflict resolution. It is a step by step process and every incremental step would then add up to a whole," he said.

Abdullah was referring to the People's Democratic Party (PDP) leader and Culture Minister of the state, Tassaduq Mufti's earlier statement to a media house, wherein he expressed a strong objection to the BJP-PDP alliance said that both the parties "ended up being partners in a crime (for which) an entire generation of Kashmiris might have to pay with their blood."

Tassaduq Mufti also said the whole party shared this view.

Abdullah continued the attack against Mufti with another tweet, asking if the deceased civillians' would get justice or not.

Heckling in US just tamasha, says Omar

Former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah on Friday asked Prime Minister Narendra Modi to break his silence over the rape and killing of an eight-year-old girl in Kathua district of the State.

“Hon PM sir, there isn’t a day when we don’t hear you speak about things that are important to you yet there are times when you are completely silent about things that are important to others,” he tweeted.

Abdullah requested the Prime Minister not to let the girl be “someone you choose to remain silent about”.

Abdullah also asked the ministers who supported the killers and threatened the police not to make arrests in the case to step down and said that they have no right to stay in the cabinet.

''Ministers who supported the killers of Kathua rape and murder case victim and threatened police not to make arrests have no right to stay in the cabinet. Mehbooba Mufti should take action just like she took against Haseeb Drabu (ex J&K FM), whose crime wasn't this heinous,'' Omar Abdullah said.&nbsp;

The rape and killing of the girl, who belonged to the nomadic Bakerwal Muslim community, has become a national issue. Details of the crime surfaced following filing of charges.

The girl had disappeared from a spot near her house close to Rasana village in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kathua on January 10. A week later, her body was found in the same area.

A Special Investigation Team, formed to probe the incident, has arrested eight people, including two special police officers (SPOs) and a head constable, who was charged with destroying evidence.
