<p>Where do I start? I was really excited initially because I thought our cinema is waking up to our scriptures. We've been so ignorant of our own scriptures for a long time. And finally, it seemed we are waking up. You go in with that kind of expectation, and then you see something like that and then it really disappoints from an audience point of view. And also from an actor's and an artists'&nbsp;point of view, it is even more disappointing. The film lacks intent and research. It is a lazy attempt at making Ramayana and it's like you've made it out of WhatsApp forwards. You're trying to play to the gallery and it shows in the content. It's like just trying to cash in on to the Hindu wave in the nation right now.&nbsp;</p>

<p>If one sets out to make something like this in India, it comes with a huge responsibility — not as a maker, but as a conscious citizen. Because cinema and literature are two mediums that educate a generation, even the subsequent 10 generations. And if you're claiming that we are making it for Gen Z, then the responsibility is even bigger. You cannot distort history and facts. You have to be very, very authentic and honest in your depiction so that they can watch and learn from it. If you are distorting our history then it becomes a cultural crime for me.</p>

<h2><strong>Q. As somebody who has played Rama, what qualities do you believe are essential to capture the essence of the character?</strong></h2>

<p>The basic things are humility and honesty. All that [Ram's qualities] are mentioned in popular fiction too, that he was truthful and genuine. So if you are not clear there, it becomes very difficult to portray Rama. What we used to do to play Rama, we did not impose our thoughts on Ram. We need to understand Rama's perspective to portray him. 'What would Ram say? What would Ram do?' They [<em>Adipurush </em>makers] are trying to portray what <em>they&nbsp;</em>think about Ram. Nobody's interested in that. People want to know what Ram thinks. There is no emotion in the film. You do not connect to anything.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>Q. Do you think this is the case of focussing too much on visual spectacle at the expense of storytelling?&nbsp;</strong></h2>

<p>I think our filmmakers are suffering from an inferiority complex. We have a colonised mindset. We feel shame in depicting our culture, our society the way it is and the way it has been. Rather than taking pride in it, we try to ape the Western style of filmmaking. I understand they are much more advanced in technology. So take the technology, use the resources, but tell an Indian story! Do not tell a Westernised version of an Indian story Very few of our filmmakers have a truly India-rooted outlook towards our own culture and society. We do not make such brains right now. So it's really difficult to see authentic stuff right now.</p>

<p>There cannot be a retelling of things, there can only be inspired versions of them. Now, our scriptures, our epics... they are written in a way that they will inspire 10,000 things in you. That is the beauty of them. When we read them my interpretation will be different from yours. They force you to find yourself. I tell you what, every depiction of a hero or heroin, or a villain ever in Indian cinema is inspired by either Ramayana or Mahabharata. They all have emerged from these stories. We look to our heroes for the same qualities that Ram or Krishna had.&nbsp;</p>

<p>So you make whatever you want to make! Who's stopping you? But when we have set out to make a depiction of an epic, it has to be true to the events described, history, and context. If I am making Ramayana, I have to get things right. If I do not do that, I am rewriting history and nobody has given me the right. We are not Tulsidas or Valmiki to recreate Ramayana. That is where the line should be drawn.</p>

<h2><strong>Q. Do you think there are any positive aspects of <em>Adipurush </em>that should be acknowledged despite all the criticism?</strong></h2>

<p>I think two things one is the sheer imagination of the fact that how the battle would have gone. There are things to see in those scenes. Then Saif's acting, his screen presence. He has done work on himself and it reflects on screen. He's brought some nuances here and there and he really captures the screen.</p>

Adipurush box office collection: Film witnesses major slump on day 7

<p>On Thursday, a Nepal court lifted the ban on Hindi films that was imposed earlier this week after the release of <em>Adipurush. </em>While filmmaker Om Raut's <em>Adipurush</em> can now be screened in theatres across Nepal, the Kathmandu Mayor has reportedly vowed to stop the film's screening in the country.<br />

The court has directed authorities across the country to allow the seamless screening of all Hindi films that have been cleared by the censor board, including <em>Adipurush</em>. However, Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah has said he is ready to face punishment but will not let <em>Adipurush</em> screen in theatres across Nepal. He said that the matter has a lot to do with “Nepal’s sovereignty and independence” which he cannot let down.&nbsp;<br />

Shah particularly has a problem with one of the lines in the film which claims Sita (played by Kriti Sanon) is India's daughter. In the actual <em>Ramayana -</em> on which the film is based - Sita belonged to Nepal.&nbsp;<br />

Shah shared a Facebook post which reads, “The film's writer said that Nepal was under India, this clearly shows India’s ill intention. To term this as a stunt by the Nepal government and to issue an order by the court in favour of screening the movie means&nbsp;to accept that Nepal was once under India’s rule, and the court and the government are both the slaves of India.”&nbsp;</p>

On Thursday, a Nepal court lifted the ban on Hindi films that was imposed earlier this week after the release of Adipurush. While filmmaker Om Raut's Adipurush can now be screened in theatres across Nepal, the Kathmandu Mayor has reportedly vowed to stop the film's screening in the country.

However, Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah has said he is ready to face punishment but will not let Adipurush screen in theatres across Nepal. He said that the matter has a lot to do with “Nepal’s sovereignty and independence” which he cannot let down. Shah particularly has a problem with one of the lines in the film which claims Sita (played by Kriti Sanon) is India's daughter. In the actual Ramayana - on which the film is based - Sita belonged to Nepal. Shah shared a Facebook post which reads, “The film's writer said that Nepal was under India, this clearly shows India’s ill intention. To term this as a stunt by the Nepal government and to issue an order by the court in favour of screening the movie means to accept that Nepal was once under India’s rule, and the court and the government are both the slaves of India.” Meanwhile, Patan High Court judge Dhir Bahadur Chand stated that the screening of films that have permission from the censor board should not be stopped as it’s unethical. He added, "Now we will screen all movies passed by the censor board.” Why were Adipurush and other Hindi films banned in Nepal? Three days after Adipurush hit theatres on June 16, the Nepal court banned the film along with other Hindi films. The film was called out for a controversial dialogue. In the film, Sita has been called the daughter of India, while many people believe that Sita was born in Janakpur which is in Southern Nepal and was, hence, also known as Janaki. The film, however, indicated that Janaki was an Indian princess. The court lifted the ban after getting permission from the censor board on Thursday. <p>Actor Sunil Lahri, who played Lakshman in Ramanand Sagar's cult TV show <em>Ramayan</em>, has criticised Om Raut's <em>Adipurush </em>which is based on the same epic. The actor recently watched the film and shared his views in a video on Instagram. Lahri raised several questions about the way the character of Raavan - Saif Ali Khan - was depicted in the film. In Valmiki's <em>Ramayan</em>, Raavan is known to abduct Sita in <em>Pushpak Vimaan</em>, while in <em>Adipurush</em>, Khan is shown flying a giant bat.&nbsp;<br />

Lahri called out the artistic liberties that the makers have taken in the film, changing some very important moments of the epic just for cinematic purposes.&nbsp;<br />

He called the dialogues of the film poorly written and said that the makers should feel sorry for serving this to the audience and hurting their sentiments.</p>

You can't play with your culture in the name of doing something different, especially those who are our own. The characters are not defined. Netizens criticised the movie's teaser and trailer for having weak visual effects and inaccurate portrayals of the gods. The movie is currently having problems in Nepal after receiving criticism in India. The authors of the dialogue "Bharat ki beti," which is used to refer to the deity Sita, were criticised by the mayor of Nepal. Mayor Balen Shah issued a three-day deadline for the dialogue to be fixed, after which the movie would not be shown in the nation's capital.

<p>Kriti Sanon exuded elegance in a white and gold saree at the Mumbai trailer launch event of <em>Adipurush</em> on Tuesday. The saree that the star draped was no ordinary one. Designed by designer duo Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla, the saree reportedly features 24-carat gold Khadi print and emeralds.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Taking to Instagram, the duo shared two images of Kriti looking statuesque in the ensemble. The images were captioned -&nbsp;“Kriti Sanon is a vision in a double-drape saree featuring a mix of off-white Khadi saree with zardozi border and a vintage Kerala cotton saree with 24-carat gold Khadi block print. While the clashes between Shivaji and Aurangzeb are well known- the story tries to delve deeper and talk of the warriors from both sides who fought on behalf of their kings.</p>

<p>Lavish sets, sleek camera work, superb stunts, and great CGI dominate each frame of Tanhaji making the film a visual spectacle. The technical finesse is there for everyone to see and while the film takes you back in time, the film has state of the art CGI making the battle scene especially come alive. Each of the stunts is well performed and the film has been shot keeping in mind the 3d aspect. Frames by cinematographer Keiko Nakahara are awe-inspiring.</p>

An eccentric who has a cunning smile plastered on his face throughout, <strong>Saif makes evil look good</strong>. Time and again, Saif has proved that given a good script, he delivers and in Om Raut and Prakash Kapadia's detailed screenplay, the actor gets ample scope to showcase his talent.</p>

The makers try to project Mughals as the oppressors from whom the Marathas seek freedom and live in a Swarajya. The film opens to 17th century Bharat- which is historically not true considering the concept of one nation never really existed at that time. Each emperor was just busy consolidating his kingdom, there was no concept one nation.</p>

<p>The actors speak a mix of Marathi and Urdu laced Hindi which is somewhat ironic. I found myself lost on many occasions when the actors spoke out a line here and there in Marathi. Perhaps subtitles would have helped.</p>

<p>If you are willing to overlook the facts and history, 'Tanhaji: The Unsung Hero' makes for a thrilling watch. There is not a single dull moment -especially in the second half when the war scenes come alive. The film has sleek action, well-shot scenes and a very menacing Saif Ali Khan who more than makes up for all the flaws.</p>
