Fans of Apple went gaga over the recent 'Far Out'event which introduced to the masses iPhone14 and "futuristic" specifications like its much-touted "Crash Detection" feature.

However, in the next few weeks, several issues have been reported with these specs. The latest as per a Wall Street Journal (WSJ) report casts doubt on the efficacy of the safety feature which is supposed to help emergency services reach users ASAP in case of an accident or crash.

The report details a recent "roller coaster ride" of an incident at an amusement park in Cincinnati.&nbsp;

A woman's iPhone 14 alerted the authorities of a crash as she enjoyed a ride. The phone's new car-crash detection was triggered as she "enjoyed getting hoisted 109 feet in the air and whipped around at over 50 mph".

The phone placed a 911 call to the Warren County Communications Center with an automated voice message which said “The owner of this iPhone was in a severe car crash and is not responding to their phone.”

It also picked up the background audio from the amusement park; hoots, cheers, music and adrenaline-fueled people having fun.

As per the 911 report, an emergency response team was sent to the location but they couldn't locate any emergency. The iPhone user realised the whole thing and called the emergency services back to tell them that she is okay. Ironically she reassured them that she hasn't been in a car crash from the line for 'bumper cars'.

While the incident is in a certain way hilarious, it also raises the question of how dependable the feature is. There would be nothing funny about receiving an alert that your loved one has been in a crash, only to discover that they were having fun at a fair or amusement park and just forgot to answer their phone.

This is not to say that the emergency call is placed undetected by the user. The feature uses a combination of sensor data to assess a potential crash. If detected, it shows a message on the screen for ten seconds, following which a ten-second countdown happens, accompanied by an alarm.&nbsp;

Only after this countdown, emergency services are contacted. A message is also sent to your emergency contact.

However, as the incident demonstrates you sometimes forget to check your phone.

The false alarms can be scary and they will grow in number as more people buy the new model of iPhone. It has to be acknowledged that technology can make mistakes, for it the difference between a deadly crash and a thrilling ride might be non-existent.

In spite of that, there have already been multiple cases where the feature was literally a lifesaver, in one it alerted authorities to a deadly accident where a car crashed into a tree. The crash had no witnesses and without the alert, the user might have perished.

Even if scary or irritating this feature has saved lives and will continue to do so, one can only hope that Apple will soon launch an update fixing this "bug".

According to a report, several major US and foreign banks stand to suffer losses of $500 million or more if they carry out their commitments to finance Elon Musk's $44 billion acquisition of Twitter.

The banks, led by Morgan Stanley and six others, including Barclays and Bank of America, pledged to raise $13 billion in debt six months ago to finance Musk's purchase. This commitment is unconditional and does not depend on their ability to sell the debt to investors.&nbsp;

As per Bloomberg "if the debt were to be sold now" it would lead to a collective loss of $500 million or more.

Banks agreed to terms with lower returns when financing the Musk-Twitter deal in April. Since then, the credit markets have gotten worse as a result of higher interest rates following efforts to reduce record inflation, with returns on riskier junk bonds and leveraged loans increasing. This can potentially result in write-downs.

Elon Musk-Twitter saga | Banks financing the deal face $500 million in losses: Report

36 years since a catastrophic meltdown at the Chernobyl power plant unleashed one of the world's worst nuclear disasters, now "mutant" black frogs are spawning in the vicinity.

The species of frog found in this area, known as the Eastern tree frogs (Hyla Orientalis), typically have bright green skin but now many have sprung up with dark or pigmented skin.

A study published in Evolutionary Applications details the research surrounding these frogs' evolution. Scientists believe that darker skin might help the frogs survive in the exclusion zone.&nbsp;

Germán Orizaola a researcher at the Spain University of Oviedo&nbsp;and a co-author of the study, said that his team became aware of the frogs on their first night in Chernobyl.

"We know that melanin protects from the damage caused by different types of radiation, from UV to ionizing radiation – the kind at Chernobyl," Daily Mail quotes&nbsp;Orizaola as saying.

Orizaola and his co-author&nbsp;Pablo Burraco&nbsp;collected more than 200 male frog specimens from about a dozen different breeding ponds with varying levels of radiation between 2017 and 2019, reports TWC.

As the October 30, Brazillian presidential runoff draws closer far-right incumbent President Jair Bolsonaro during an interview commented that if Donald Trump was still the US President he could've averted the Russia-Ukraine war that has been on for more than seven months now.

Speaking to the news magazine Veja, Bolsonaro also said that he had a good in-person meeting with Trump's successor Joe Biden. However, he asserted that if his close ally Trump was still in office, many issues currently bedevilling the world could've been avoided.

Just days after pitching his controversial "solutions" for ending the Ukraine-Russia war, Tesla CEO Elon Musk has once again voiced suggestions on how to end another long drawn-out tussle: the one between China and Taiwan.

The world has seen its fair share of terror attacks. These terrible attacks result in huge losses of life and the devastation of property. People, who survive these are considered lucky, but are they?

A 23-year woman who had survived a terror attack when she was a teenager has died after she chose to be euthanised. Shanti De Corte was plagued by depression and PTSD due to the bomb detonation she witnessed back when she was 17 years old.

Shanti sought help from a psychiatric facility in her home town of Antwerp and was even put on anti-depressant medications. However, the psychological trauma was too heavy and she attempted suicide twice; once in 2018 and once in 2020.

Belgium woman gets euthanised after battling post-terror attack mental trauma for six years

As Brazil's incumbent Jair Bolsonaro and challenger Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva gear up for their upcoming October 30 battle where they face off in a presidential runoff, both the contenders got key endorsements.

In Sunday's first-round election, they finished with a closer than expected five-point difference with Lula getting 48 per cent and Bolsonaro 43 per cent.

While Bolsonaro raked up multiple endorsements, including one from his former justice minister, influential campaign buster Sergio Moro, Lula got a significant one from contender Ciro Gomes who finished fourth in the first round.

Lula's endorsement came as a surprise, as he and Gomes have a long history of animosity. Gomes in a video said that he grudgingly supports the endorsement as "the only exit, under the circumstances."

Third-place candidate Simone Tebet also hinted that she might back Lula. If he gets this endorsement it might prove key in luring the votes of centre-right Tebet's socially conservative women voters.&nbsp;

The newly re-elected Romeu Zema and Claudio Castro, the governors of Minas Gerais and Rio de Janeiro, the second and third largest states in Brazil, respectively, also endorsed Bolsonaro.

They will now be fighting to woo the voters who voted for third- and fourth-place finishers, Tebet and centre-left candidate Gomes, as well as those who cast blank, spoiled ballots and those who forego voting.

As the use of automation in sectors like education, healthcare, and employment witnesses an increase, the White House on Tuesday proposed an Artificial Intelligence (AI) Bill of Rights.

The proposed bill is non-binding and suggests practices that developers and users of AI should voluntarily follow so that technology doesn't unfairly put humans in a disadvantageous position.

Biden administration proposes an Artificial Intelligence Bill of Rights

America's gross national debt has reached an unfortunate high of $31 trillion for the first time ever, revealed a Treasury Department report on Tuesday. The artificial borrowing cap Congress imposed on the US government is progressively getting closer as debt edges closer to the statutory ceiling of $31.4 trillion.

The debt threshold not only spells trouble for the nation's economy but also poses a problem for Joe Biden who will once again be running for President in 2024.&nbsp;

He had promised to reduce US budget deficits i.e., what government earns through tax revenue vs the money it spends by $1 trillion over a decade. However, as per estimates by the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget estimates, his policies have added nearly $5 trillion to the deficit since he took office in 2020.&nbsp;

Even as President Joe Biden touts his administration's attempts to reduce the deficit and even introduced the so-called Inflation Reduction Act that attempts to tame a 40-year price increase, economists say that the latest debt numbers are a cause for concern.

This comes as higher borrowing costs replace the nation's historically low-interest rates as the Federal Reserve attempts to combat rapid inflation.

To combat the pandemic and finance tax cuts the government undertook record levels of borrowings, which due to the higher rates are making America's debt costly over time.

As per estimates by the Peterson Foundation, higher rates could add around one trillion dollars to US federal government's interest payments this decade. Additionally, the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) May forecast&nbsp;that debt costs would reach a record $8.1 trillion.

If interest rates on the nation's debt increase by just one percentage point beyond what the CBO forecasts over the next few years, interest payments might surpass United States' national defence expenditure by 2029, reports the New York Times.

Italian luxury sports car manufacturer Ferrari might have become the latest victim of a ransomware attack. As per a Reuters report, internal documents belonging to the brand had been posted online.

The carmaker refuted that this was a ransomware attack, adding that there was no evidence of it or of a breach of the company's system.&nbsp;

However, Ferrari said that it was working to identify how the documents were made public and that appropriate actions would be taken as needed, adding that there has been no disruption to its business and operations.

As wildfire groups warn that human activities are leading to a depletion of the nation's habitats and that many of Australia's species are just clinging to existence, Australia has now listed 15 new species as threatened. They include a small wallaby and grey snake.

On Tuesday, the country launched an ambitious 'zero-extinction' plan, that over the next 10 years would try and halt slide of 110 "priority species" into extinction. It would create a "halo effect" on interdependent species in the same habitat, said Environment Minister Tanya Plibersek.&nbsp;

Protection of 20 "priority places" from further degradation is also included. Plibersek remarked that it could create "little Noah's Arks of places returning to healthy populations of plants and animals".

"The Black Summer bushfires in particular have seen devastating results for many species. We are determined to give wildlife a better chance," said the minister, adding that listing species as threatened under national environment law "is a critical step in protecting the species and habitats in need &nbsp;of urgent help."

As per reports the Black Summer fire&nbsp;burned through 5.8 million hectares in eastern Australia and killed, and displaced an estimated 1-3 billion animals.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese's government announced that the scheme plans to try and prevent any new extinction of Australia's flora and fauna while conserving at least 30 per cent of the nation's land mass.

Australia launches zero-extinction plan; wallaby, snake among threatened species

The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) has warned its members that Russian President Vladimir Putin has deployed Poseidon, a nuclear weapon that is also known as the "weapon of the Apocalypse".

Apparently, over the weekend, NATO issued a warning note that was leaked to Italian Media. As per the note, the doomsday weapon is on its way from its base in the Arctic circle to the Kara Sea.

What did the warning note say?

As per the note, the Belgorod, a huge nuclear submarine, has gone missing from its home base in the Arctic circle and it may be on its way to test out a destructive, dangerous nuclear weapon called Poseidon.

What is Poseidon?

It is an 'Intercontinental Nuclear-Powered Nuclear-Armed Autonomous Torpedo' that is believed to be capable of travelling huge distances underwater.&nbsp;

Poseidon is capable of a detonation that can trigger a 1,600 ft nuclear tsunami&nbsp; that is "designed to drown and irradiate coastal cities" reports Daily Mail.

The next-generation weapon was announced by the Russian president back in 2018. As per Russian media, the doomsday weapon can travel up to 6,000 miles under water. It packs an explosion of two megatonnes. For context, this is more than 130 times the nuclear explosion of "Little Boy", the atomic bomb that wrecked Hiroshima in Japan back in August 1945 during World War II.

As&nbsp;per Naval News, "It is a giant torpedo which can hit coastal cities with devastating results. Compared to an intercontinental ballistic missile it is very slow, but possibly unstoppable."

Italian publication La Reppubblica quoted an expert HI Sutton as saying that Poseidon "is a completely new category of weapon - which will oblige a change in the planning of the western navies, leading to the definition of new requirements and new means to counter it".

As per Daily Mail, the weapon has never been tested thanks to the international prohibition on testing of nuclear weapons, and if Russia does test it now, this would mark a highly "provocative" move by the nation.

How did Ukraine react to the warning?

Pravda reports that Ukraine, which has for the past few months been facing aggression and destruction at the hands of Russia, has urged the media not to spread disinformation and called the information manipulative.&nbsp;

As per a Facebook post by Ukraine's National Security and Defence of Ukraine [NSDC], "information about the submarine 'Belgorod' can play on the hand of Russian propaganda".

NATO warns Russia may have deployed its 'weapon of the Apocalypse' Poseidon. Here's all you need to know

Competition is good, it pushes you to do better, and aim higher. When it comes to an auction competition or rather a competitive bidding can be the one thing that makes it a success. That's what happened in France, a bidding war over a vase worth a little less than $2,000 led to it being sold for a whopping $7.59 million. The total came to $8.99 million after factoring in the seller's fee.

The vase in question is an "ordinary" Chinese vase, but it was mistakenly presumed by bidders to be a rare 18th-century artefact, which resulted in the object being sold at around 4,000 times its estimated value.

As per Guardian, the vase which is a tianqiuping style porcelain was put up for auction by a French woman living in the nation's overseas territory. It was left to her by her late mother. She had not even seen the 54-centimetre tall vase and had arranged for it to be directly picked from her mother's estate in Brittany.&nbsp;

The auction house was informed that it belonged to the seller's grandmother who was a Parisian collector "in the last century."

One of the Osenat Auction House, auctioneers Jean-Pierre called the incident "a crazy story". The auction house described the vase as "quite ordinary" and said that it dated from the 20th century. An expert at the auction house said that it would have been extremely rare if it had been 200 years older.

Since 2020, more than 190 Harly-infected apps have been discovered on Google Play, according to Kaspersky. The well-known antivirus supplier estimates that 4.8 million people have downloaded these apps, however, the actual number may be far higher.

How does it work?

The Harly family of Trojans imitates trustworthy applications. Scammers download common apps from Google Play, add malicious code to them, and then submit the altered versions to Google Play. Users might not even be aware that the apps are dangerous because they still have the functions that are provided in the description.

But don't you need a verification code for paid subscriptions?

Yes, you do. However, according to The Daily Express, Harly can sign up Android users for pricey subscription services without their knowledge by stealthily taking security codes from text messages.

It can also check subscriptions over the phone without the device owner's knowledge, and once this is done, it could empty someone's bank account without being noticed.

While Mars is the intended target for humanity's first crewed mission to another planet, a group of experts is now advocating for Earth's sister planet Venus to get that accolade.

However, the planet is practically burning up. It is hot enough to melt lead, is home to clouds of sulphuric acid, a chemical capable of causing severe skin burns, and has a crushing atmospheric pressure.&nbsp;

Why then, do these experts want to forego Mars and visit Venus?

As per a report by the Guardian quoting research presented at the International Astronautical Congress (IAC) in Paris last week, there are actually plus points to this.

One of the supporters of the Venus flyby, Dr Noam Izenberg of the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory, claimed that Venus "gets a bad rap because it's got such a difficult surface environment."

'Men are from Mars, women are from Venus', which planet should humans visit first?

Have you been through a tough breakup, the kind which left you feeling physically drained, so much so that you didn't have the energy to go to work? Did you wish you could take a leave of absence for the heartbreak similar to the one offered for sick days? If your answer is yes, you are not alone.

Recently, a heartbroken woman sparked a heated debate online by asking the internet if it's acceptable to take time off work to deal with a breakup.

The question was posted on a UK-based website called 'Mumsnet' which describes itself as "a website where parents could swap advice about not just holidays but all the other stuff parents talk about."

TikTok challenges are all the fad these days, and while they can be fun, and get you, followers, in many cases they have proven to be dangerous as well. Recently, experts have warned against a newly viral TikTok challenge that is sending people to the hospital. The challenge is called "One Chip Challenge" and in it, participants endure a specific, "incredibly spicy" chip. After the challenge sent many people, including children, to the hospital in severe pain, health officials and medical experts have warned that the trend may be dangerous. Watch | WION Fineprint | Why is the one chip challenge being banned? States and school districts all around the nation United States have cautioned about the harmful "One Chip Challenge". School districts including Georgia and Colorado have issued warnings to parents about the alarming trend after numerous pupils missed class as a result of the viral challenge. Hospitalisations resulting from the chip challenge have already been reported in California, Alabama, and Texas. One Texas student even experienced a seizure and lost consciousness in class, reported KBTX. Experts issue warning after TikTok's latest 'one chip challenge' lands schoolkid in hospital with seizures

A team of American researchers has identified a new variant of coronavirus in Russian bats that is capable of infecting people. They have voiced concern that the virus called "Khosta-2" may be "completely resistant" to all coronavirus vaccinations now on the market and is just waiting to jump from bats to humans.&nbsp;The team's research has been published in the journal PLoS Pathogens.

Here's everything we know about the dangerous virus:

What is Khosta-2?

The pathogen is classified as a sarbecovirus, a member of the coronavirus family. However, nothing is known about it other than the fact that it is related to SARS-CoV-2, the strain responsible for Covid.&nbsp;

When and where was the virus discovered?

As per Daily Mail, Khosta-2 was discovered in bat samples taken from Sochi National Park between March and October 2020, i.e., around the same time when the world was in a panic over SARS-CoV-2. However, the Russian government acknowledged its presence pretty recently in May.

Is it dangerous to humans?

As per Dr Stephanie Seifert and her colleagues, Khosta-2 is a zoonotic virus, which means that it can "latch onto human cells with ease in the same way as the Covid virus."

How does it infect us?

According to tests, Khosta-2 was able to infect human cells in a manner that was remarkably similar to SARS-CoV-2 the virus responsible for Covid-19.

The virus attaches to the ACE-2 entrance enzyme, which is located on the surface of human cells, by hooking onto a spike-like protein on its surface.

Are any vaccines available to combat it?

Daily Mail reports that the&nbsp;research team&nbsp;from Washington State University tested the virus in order to learn more about it. They discovered that the pathogen was resistant to the coronavirus vaccines we have available on the market today.

It was found to be 'completely resistant' Bebtelovimab, an antibody medication made by Eli Lilly.&nbsp;

Laboratory testing also revealed that it seemed "resistant" to two doses of vaccination by Moderna and Pfizer.

So how do we fight it?

Even though how it infects is similar to SARS-CoV-2, Koshta isn't as efficient.

Scientists believe that it could still be "possible" that the virus can be fought off using either natural immunity from Covid-19 or possibly even protection gained by vaccination.

Referring to SARS-CoV-2 which is also classified as sarbecovirus, they said it was behind "the largest global pandemic in modern history" and that&nbsp;a universal coronavirus vaccine is desperately needed at a time when "Zoonotic spillover of sarbecoviruses has led to the emergence of highly pathogenic human viruses."

Scientists sound alarm over virus that 'latches onto humans' just like Covid-19, and is vaccine-resistant

Mars is a far-away dream. That is not to say that humans haven't reached the planet: we have, albeit, by proxy, as our rovers have been on the red soil. However, no man has ever stepped foot on Mars's surface. Yet, as per a new estimate, our race has already littered the red planet with more than 15,000 pounds or 7,000 kilogrammes&nbsp;of trash.

There is 15,694 pounds (approximately 7118.6 kilogrammes) of human debris on the red planet, estimates Cagri Kilic, a postdoctoral research fellow in robotics at West Virginia University. He&nbsp;analysed the mass of all Mars rovers and orbiters before deducting the weight of those that are still in use to arrive at this estimate.

As per Daily Mail, the debris includes abandoned tools, dormant rockets, and spacecraft that have crashed onto the planet, including the Soviet Union's Mars orbiter 2 which made a crash landing in 1971.

Scientists fear that not only is our race polluting yet another planet, even as we struggle to save ours, but that this trash could contaminate the samples being collected by NASA’s Perseverance rover and endanger the missions worth millions of dollars&nbsp;to search for signs of life on mars.

However, the report points out that much of the discarded parts had to be abandoned in order to preserve ships as they soar through the Red Planet's harsh atmosphere. An example of this is NASA's Perseverance, which weathered seven minutes of hell when it landed in February 2021, and also resulted in the creation of an unavoidable amount of trash.

As per Daily Mail, deaths by suicide or drug overdose account for 22.7 per cent of these deaths, with a significant fraction of these incidents being linked to mental health issues.&nbsp;Haemorrhages, heart conditions, infections, and excessive blood pressure were some of the other major causes.&nbsp;

Health professionals have long cautioned about the often-overlooked problem of maternal mortality in the United States.

According to research by The Commonwealth Fund, with 17.4 deaths for every 100,000 births, the United States had the highest rate of any developed country.

Maternal mortality in the US was compared to ten peer countries, and America had twice as many deaths per 100,000 people as France, which had the second highest figures in the survey, and ten times more than New Zealand.

Among wealthy nations, maternal mortality is a problem that is specific to the United States since there are fewer doctors available there and more hurdles to availing care.

The head of the CDC's Division of Reproductive Health, Dr Wanda Barfield, said in a statement that the research "paints a much clearer picture of pregnancy-related deaths in this country."

The CDC analysis examined data on maternal deaths between 2017 and 2019. The information dates from before the COVID-19 epidemic, which many experts believe made the country's problems with maternal mortality worse.

84.2% of pregnancy-related deaths in US could have been avoided with better care: CDC

As per a new analysis, the past year saw hundreds of books; 801 to be exact, banned in Texas. These books ranged across multiple genres from the so-called "Queer agenda" to those featuring people of colour.&nbsp;

Unfortunately, Texas is not alone, Florida banned 566 books, Pennsylvania pulled 457 out of classrooms, and Tennessee dealt the blow to 349 books. From June 2021 to July 2022, in total there were 2,532 instances of individual books all over the country;&nbsp;1,648 unique titles were banned across 138 school districts in 32 states.

<h2>Which books were banned?</h2>

As per Pen America's report titled "Banned in the USA: The Growing Movement to Censor Books in Schools", 5,049 schools and a whopping four million students were affected by these bans.&nbsp;

The 1,648 banned books include:
- 674 that had LGBTQ+ themes, 659 had people of colour as protagonists,&nbsp;
- 338 dealt with the issue of racism,&nbsp;
- 357 contained sexual content; like stories of teen pregnancy, sexual assault, abortions, sex, relationships and even "informational books about puberty"
- 161 had themes of rights and activism
- Also banned were 141 memoirs, biographies, autobiographies
- And 64 had religious minority characters.

Of these, around 75 per cent were fiction, 24 per cent non-fiction and the remaining 1 per cent poetry.&nbsp;Even picture books catering to the young audience weren't spared.

&nbsp;

<h2>Who's behind these bans?</h2>

According to PEN America, at least 40 per cent of the 1,109 restrictions mentioned in the Index "are connected to either proposed or enacted legislation, or to political pressure exerted by state officials or elected lawmakers to restrict the teaching or presence of certain books or concepts."

The report blames 50 groups (300 if you count the local, and regional chapters) across the country for these bans. It also points out that 73 per cent or 262 of these groups have been formed since 2021.

However, parents and community groups also played a role.

"This movement to ban books is deeply undemocratic, in that it often seeks to impose restrictions on all students and families based on the preferences of those calling for the bans and notwithstanding polls that consistently show that Americans of all political persuasions oppose book bans," remarks the report.&nbsp;

It further points out that this movement has a variety of negative impacts: on students who are no longer represented, on teachers whose teachings are now dictated and on authors who have all but lost their right to tell stories their own way.

"We should heed this warning," the report states, noting that attempts to undermine civil liberties and undermine democratic norms continue, and that "the dynamics surrounding school book bans are a canary in the coal mine for the future of American democracy, public education, and free expression".

As per a new analysis, the past year saw hundreds of books; 801 to be exact, banned in Texas. These books ranged across multiple genres from the so-called "Queer agenda" to those featuring people of colour. Unfortunately, Texas is not alone, Florida banned 566 books, Pennsylvania pulled 457 out of classrooms, and Tennessee dealt the blow to 349 books. From June 2021 to July 2022, in total there were 2,532 instances of individual books all over the country; 1,648 unique titles were banned across 138 school districts in 32 states. Watch | The unburnable book to promote book banning in the US Which books were banned? As per Pen America's report titled "Banned in the USA: The Growing Movement to Censor Books in Schools", 5,049 schools and a whopping four million students were affected by these bans. The 1,648 banned books include: - 674 that had LGBTQ+ themes, 659 had people of colour as protagonists, - 338 dealt with the issue of racism, - 357 contained sexual content; like stories of teen pregnancy, sexual assault, abortions, sex, relationships and even "informational books about puberty" - 161 had themes of rights and activism - Also banned were 141 memoirs, biographies, autobiographies - And 64 had religious minority characters. Of these, around 75 per cent were fiction, 24 per cent non-fiction and the remaining 1 per cent poetry. Even picture books catering to the young audience weren't spared. Also read | Queen's crush, 'disrespectful’ Prince Harry & more: Heart-warming, controversial moments from royal funeral Who's behind these bans? According to PEN America, at least 40 per cent of the 1,109 restrictions mentioned in the Index "are connected to either proposed or enacted legislation, or to political pressure exerted by state officials or elected lawmakers to restrict the teaching or presence of certain books or concepts." The report blames 50 groups (300 if you count the local, and regional chapters) across the country for these bans. It also points out that 73 per cent or 262 of these groups have been formed since 2021. However, parents and community groups also played a role. "This movement to ban books is deeply undemocratic, in that it often seeks to impose restrictions on all students and families based on the preferences of those calling for the bans and notwithstanding polls that consistently show that Americans of all political persuasions oppose book bans," remarks the report. Also read | Loch Ness monster 'captured' on a newly installed live stream. Watch it here! It further points out that this movement has a variety of negative impacts: on students who are no longer represented, on teachers whose teachings are now dictated and on authors who have all but lost their right to tell stories their own way. "We should heed this warning," the report states, noting that attempts to undermine civil liberties and undermine democratic norms continue, and that "the dynamics surrounding school book bans are a canary in the coal mine for the future of American democracy, public education, and free expression". Faced with a steep increase in prices and as they return to work, people across Australia are giving up their "pandemic" pets.&nbsp;

Reuters reports that Australian animal shelters are overcrowded, with individuals waiting on waitlists for as long as eight months to surrender their pets.

Monika Biernacki, founder of Monika's Doggie Rescue a no-kill shelter in Sydney's northern suburbs said that she has never seen something like this in her 20 years of animal rescue.

"The number of animals in the shelters that are just desperate to get out. The number of calls, emails, texts that we get here of people wanting to surrender their animals and it's just never-ending... It's heartbreaking," she added.

According to Stephen Albin, CEO of the New South Wales Animal Welfare Society, many people who purchased pets as lockdown companions are now realising the responsibilities they bring.

"I think quite a few people just wanted companionship so they went and got a pet, they got a companion, but they didn't quite understand what it takes to keep a pet," he remarked.

'It's heartbreaking', Australian animal shelters overflow as people rush to return their 'pandemic pets'

Who doesn't know about the asteroid that killed dinosaurs? We've all pretty much grown up in the information that the otherworldly object was behind the extinction of the mighty lizards. But what if that wasn't completely true?

A new major study claims that dinosaurs were "already dying" back when they got wiped out by the giant asteroid.&nbsp;

When dinosaurs went extinct 66 million years ago, their range of species was already drastically shrinking, as per the study done on dinosaur eggs in China.

According to Mirror UK, the study, which was conducted by the Chinese Academy of Sciences has been published in the scientific journal PNAS.&nbsp;

Using dinosaur eggs found in the country's Shanyang Basin it creates a two million-year chronology toward the end of the Cretaceous period, the last period during which dinosaurs were alive.

The central Chinese basin yielded some 1,000 egg fossils, but upon closer examination, researchers discovered that just three species were actually alive at the time.

It means that the diversity in dinosaur species was ebbing during the Cretaceous period.

“Our results demonstrate low dinosaur biodiversity during the last two million years of the Cretaceous, and those data indicate a decline in dinosaur biodiversity millions of years before the Cretaceous/Paleogene boundary," wrote the authors.

This may imply that dinosaur populations were already in decline before they were wiped out by an asteroid.

It has been speculated that factors including climate change and volcanic eruptions may have led to the creatures' population collapse.

Events like the Deccan Traps eruption in present-day India would have also severely damaged the food supplies, which could have contributed to dinosaurs perishing.

Was an asteroid the sole reason dinosaurs went extinct? New study claims they were already 'dying out'

As per a report by SkyNews, dealers are now using social media to peddle drugs to children.&nbsp;These contain cannabis and are packaged in appealing candy wrappers, which are predictably appealing to kids. In recent days, six children had to be sent to the hospital after eating these; one of them was just eight years old.

The "candies" are frequently advertised and offered for sale alongside class A substances like heroin, cocaine, LSD, and copious amounts of marijuana.

A SkyNews investigation found that dealers are openly operating on Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, Twitter and Snapchat.

While some CBD-infused goods are available legally in stores across the nation, these candies contain significant concentrations of THC, the psychoactive ingredient in cannabis that is used to "get high".

Cannabis edibles, according to Detective Chief Inspector Rob Burns of Eastern Region Special Operations Unit (ERSOU), are illegal and can cause adverse reactions like unconsciousness.
