In Turkey, the owner of a cattle farm has experimented with virtual reality headsets on some of his cows to see if they can produce more milk. The virtual reality headsets create the illusion for the cows that they are outside in a sunny field.

Developed in cooperation with veterinarians to ensure cow safety, these VR headsets were first tested in Moscow, Russia.

The hardware is a standard human VR set, but it has been moulded to fit a cow's head. Once this was done, experts altered the colour palette in the software to make the VR headset more suitable for cows' eyes. The colours had to be tweaked since cows cannot see red or green.

A cattle breeder and rancher in Aksaray, Turkey, Izzet Koçak claims his cows' milk output has increased from 22 litres to 27 litres a day after using the VR devices on two of them.

According to Koçak, previous studies have shown that environmental conditions affect the health and milk production of cows.

In addition to walking his animals around the large pasture, Koçak allows them to listen to relaxing music with these VR glasses.

A Russian company produces these VR headsets.

The rancher hopes to order glasses from Russia for all of his cows if all ten of the cows he's currently experimenting on show progress and the attempt prove successful.

The virtual reality glasses make the cows feel like they are in the middle of a field on a summer day, says Koçak.

He said that in his business, the cows on average provide them with 22 litres of milk every day. However, when the cows wear virtual reality glasses, they can view a vast green pasture, and the milk average of two cows wearing virtual reality glasses is up to 27 litres.

In Koçak's view, these glasses (VR headsets) are also emotionally beneficial for animals. He noted that they were less stressed when wearing them, and this is reflected in the milk yield, which is increasing in both quality and quantity.

A Russian business tried this, and the rancher came across it by chance on social media. In hopes of positive results, he decided to start with two cows. At the moment, they are in the trial phase, and they have ordered 10 more virtual reality glasses for the next phase. If they're successful, we will order glasses for all our herds.

In Moscow, VR headsets covered both eyes of the animals, but Koçak experimented by showing an image on one eye.

After a picture of a man resembling Giovanni Gammino was taken outside a fruit shop in Galapagar, Spain, authorities tracked down the man.

Gammino, 61, was tracked down to Galapagar a town near Madrid. He had long been suspected to be in the country, but police were unable to locate him.

According to Nicola Altiero, deputy director of Italy's anti-mafia unit (DIA), the photograph helped them confirm the investigation they were conducting in the traditional way.

Italy's La Repubblica newspaper reported that Gammino went by the name of Manuel and worked as a chef at a restaurant called La cocina de Manu.

A Street View that revealed his downfall also showed him outside another establishment that bore his false name, El huerto de Manu.

The newspaper La Repubblica reports that Gammino was the boss of the Stidda crime group in Agrigento, Sicily. There has been much rivalry between the group and the well-known Cosa Nostra.

"How did you find me? I haven't called my family in ten years," Gammino reportedly told police upon his arrest on 17 December.

Currently, he has been taken into custody in Spain, according to Ms Altiero from the Italian anti-mafia unit, but he is expected to return to Italy in February.

Researchers have now confirmed what basically everyone already knew: Grandmothers are hardwired to care deeply about their grandchildren.

A new study published in the Royal Society B on Tuesday provides the first neural snapshot of intergenerational bonds.

Scientists at Emory University in the US state of Georgia conducted functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) on 50 grandmothers who were shown pictures of their grandchildren aged between three and 12 years old.

In addition to pictures of their grandchild, adults of the same sex as their grandchild and an unknown adult were shown as controls.

"They recruited areas of the brain that are involved with emotional empathy, and also areas of the brain that are involved in movement and motor simulation and preparation," James Rilling, an anthropologist and neuroscientist who led the study.

"When they're viewing these pictures of their grandchild, they're really feeling what the grandchild is feeling. So when the child is expressing joy, they're feeling that joy. When the children are expressing distress, they're feeling that distress."

It is thought that the same motor-related regions of the brain light up in the brains of mothers and are related to their instinct to pick up and approach their children.

On the other hand, when the grandmothers viewed pictures of their adult children, there was greater activation of brain regions linked to cognitive empathy, the ability to understand another's feelings without becoming emotionally involved.

In Rilling's view, this might be tied to children's cute appearance, also known as "baby schema" in science, which many young species share to elicit positive caregiving responses from parents.

As opposed to other primates, humans are cooperative breeders, which means mothers get help rearing their children.

The purpose of this study was to explore what is known as the "grandmother hypothesis" in anthropology.

According to this theory, human females tend to live long lives well beyond their reproductive years in order to benefit their children and grandchildren.

It has been demonstrated that this hypothesis holds true in societies, including the Hadza hunter-gatherers of northern Tanzania, where grandmothers provide nourishment for their grandchildren.

The phenomenon has also been observed in other animals, such as elephants and orcas, both of which unlike most mammals undergo menopause.

In Denmark, a municipality spent more than $150,000 a year clearing debris from beaches, only to dump it back into the water.

Danmarks Radio published a video on their website showing a bulldozer out in the waters at Stillinge Beach in Slagelse, Denmark. It appears that the bulldozer blade lifts and dumps a lot of material, which reportedly includes plastic into the water, before coming back to shore.

The bulldozer operator uses the rake and the blade to scoop up seaweed and plastic along the beach shore. When the blade becomes full of debris, the bulldozer once again heads to the water. During the summer months in Denmark, this happens twice a week.

This process has been dubbed 'completely idiotic' by environmental experts.

Professor Torkel Gissel Nielsen, a faculty member at the National Institute of Aquatic Resources, called the proposed method "stupid" since it requires scraping seaweed with a noisy tractor, then depositing it into the water, then driving the tractor back ashore again.

Nielsen explained that this means what you have just dumped into the water will wash up on the beach immediately afterwards.

The cigarettes and other debris will be there anyway, Christensen said. When the water comes, it collects things, and those things then drift away.

Denmark cleans beach, only to dump waste back in water

Research indicates there may actually be an optimal time to fall asleep. The sweet spot for dozing off, at least when it comes to heart health, appears to be between 10 pm and 11 pm; not too early and not too late.

Based on over 88,000 participants of the UK Biobank, a study has concluded that going to sleep at 10 pm or shortly thereafter reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease.

In spite of the study's findings, it cannot prove that early or late bedtimes increase cardiovascular disease risk.
People's sleep patterns may also be affected by other health conditions or behaviours, such as staying out late and drinking, which may also increase their cardiovascular disease risk.

Also read | What if scientists are wrong about the age of continents? New study says they are 700 million years older

Moreover, the study did not pay attention to the quality of the participants' sleep, only to its length and timing.

David Plans, senior lecturer at the University of Exeter and head of research at Huma Therapeutics, who co-authored the study, pointed out that an early or late bedtime could possibly prevent individuals from receiving important cues, such as morning sunlight, that reset the body's internal clock.

He explains that when the circadian clock isn't reset properly over a prolonged period of time, inflammation increases and glucose regulation is impacted, both of which can increase the risk of cardiovascular diseases.

The team then examined data gathered from wrist-based devices worn by participants for seven days to see if there was a correlation with the time that participants fell asleep.

Taking various factors into account, including age, sex, smoking status, duration of sleep, irregular sleep patterns, diabetes status, blood pressure, and socio-economic status, the researchers found participants who went to sleep between 10 pm and 10:59 pm had a lower risk of cardiovascular disease.

People who fell asleep at midnight or later faced a 25 per cent higher risk of developing cardiovascular disease, whereas those who fell asleep before 10 pm faced a 24 per cent increased risk.

Those who fell asleep even an hour later had a 12 per cent higher risk of cardiovascular disease.

According to Plans, since they also took into account all of the more common cardiovascular risk factors, this association is clearly significant.

More research is needed with more participants to examine the results, and there was not enough evidence to recommend a certain bedtime at this time.

He explained, however, that the study highlighted the importance of sleep hygiene or habits that contribute to a good night's sleep.

Lastly, Plans pointed out that people often assume cardiovascular disease is the result of physiological influences. In reality, circadian disruption has a substantial impact on the cardiovascular system.

The video received an impressive 10 million views. Nicole, a designer from New York, says that her projects are mostly concerned with finding fun ways to repurpose items in different ways.

She decided to take it a step further and super organise according to type of food, using binders she had laying around. The sandwich folder, for instance, separated all the individual ingredients into compartments, from meat to cheese.

Airlines are using a variety of methods to get back on track, with discounts, cheap fares remaining to be the most widespread and well-known way of attracting customers.

However, a budget airline located in Japan, Osaka has taken the most creative and unconventional approach in the aviation industry. Observing the popularity of 'Gachapon' or 'Gashapon,' a vending machine that dispenses capsule toys, Peach Aviation Limited developed a vending machine that holds the potential of getting the airlines its much-needed boost.

In Japan, gachapon machines are extremely popular. Random capsules with cute Japanese collectables are dispensed by these machines. Japanese people are enthralled by the thrill of not knowing what they will receive each time.

Peach Aviation Limited has incorporated this very thrill. The airlines have modified these popular vending machines and adjusted the dispenser so that instead of toys and collectables, capsules containing a variety of destinations are given out.

In essence, this out of the box marketing move involves giving travellers a capsule, which will contain a surprise travel destination.

One go at the machine costs 5,000 Japanese yen or $44, and customers receive 6,000 Japanese yen i.e., $53 worth of mileage points. These points can only be used towards the destination they won. The airline has arranged tours for areas such as Sapporo, Nagoya, Fukuoka, and Naha through its domestic flights.

These points can then be exchanged for airfare using the code printed on a piece of paper inside the capsule. In addition, they get a miniature badge and a mission for when they reach their destination.

Although some employees thought the promotion idea wouldn't work, the vending machine idea proved to be a success in Japan. The airline has already sold around 3,000 capsules in the past few months, with sales averaging 150 a day, according to official data.

Earlier this week in Canberra, a team of firefighters responded to reports of a gas leak in a store, just to discover that the smell was caused by the pungent odour of a fruit inside the building.

In a fruitless (pardon the pun) search for the source of the leak at the Dickson shopping precinct, emergency responders advised the public to avoid the area.

Canberra's emergency services agency later said that it was not a gas leak, but in fact a Durian fruit, which gives off a very pungent smell and can waft some distance.
