<p>In a strongly worded statement issued on Thursday, North Korea's foreign ministry called for an immediate halt to Japan's&nbsp;release of treated wastewater from the Fukushima-Daiichi nuclear plant into the ocean. The statement, conveyed via the official Korean Central News Agency, characterised the release as "dangerous" and claimed it posed a significant threat to global security and the future of humanity.</p>

<p data-testid="paragraph-2">"Japan should immediately withdraw the dangerous release of radioactive wastewater which seriously threatens the lives, safety and the future of humanity," the statement said.</p>

<p>On August 24, Japan officially commenced the release of treated wastewater from the Fukushima-Daiichi nuclear plant into the Pacific Ocean. Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO), the operator of the plant, estimated that this discharge would equate to the volume of water found in approximately 540 Olympic-sized swimming pools.</p>

<p>A live video broadcast by TEPCO depicted the start of the wastewater release. Engineers closely monitored the operation from their computer screens. The release began with the opening of valves near the seawater transport pumps at the plant.</p>

<p>Both the Japanese government and the operators of the nuclear plant have maintained that the wastewater release is safe. However, this action has garnered strong objections from various countries, including China.</p>

North Korea's first international commercial flight lands in Beijing after 3-year COVID-19 hiatus

North Korea has told Japan that it plans to launch a satellite in the coming few days according to Japanese officials this would be Pyongyang's second trying to put a military spy satellite into orbit three months after the first effort failed. Japan's Coast Guard says that the North Korean authorities notified them about the plan to launch a satellite from the 24th of August till the end of August however, the notice does not specify what type of satellite it is.

Japan: North Korea planning second spy satellite launch

<p>South Korea on Tuesday (August 22) called on North Korea to immediately drop its plan of launching a satellite saying that the launch would be an "illegal act" as it would require the use of banned ballistic projectile technology.</p>

<p>"North Korea's so-called 'satellite launch' is a clear violation of UN Security Council resolutions... No matter what excuses North Korea tries to make, it cannot justify this illegal act," South Korea's Unification Ministry said in a statement.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Pyongyang, on Tuesday, told Japan's Coast Guard that it would launch a satellite between August 24 to August 31, which would fly over the Yellow Sea, East China Sea and the Pacific.</p>

South Korea on Tuesday (August 22) called on North Korea to immediately drop its plan of launching a satellite saying that the launch would be an "illegal act" as it would require the use of banned ballistic projectile technology.

South Korea on Tuesday (August 22) called on North Korea to immediately drop its plan of launching a satellite saying that the launch would be an "illegal act" as it would require the use of banned ballistic projectile technology. "North Korea's so-called 'satellite launch' is a clear violation of UN Security Council resolutions... No matter what excuses North Korea tries to make, it cannot justify this illegal act," South Korea's Unification Ministry said in a statement. Pyongyang, on Tuesday, told Japan's Coast Guard that it would launch a satellite between August 24 to August 31, which would fly over the Yellow Sea, East China Sea and the Pacific. The announcement prompted Tokyo to muster ships and its PAC-3 projectile defence system in case it were to land in its territory. North Korea offers brief response to UN Command on US soldier Travis King

This week, activities commemorating the 70th anniversary of the armistice that ended hostilities in the 1950–1953 Korean War will be held in North Korea. Government delegations from China and Russia have dispatched their representatives. The travels indicate that North Korea is expanding its outreach after years of enforced isolation and that, in the wake of rising nuclear tensions with Washington, Seoul, and Tokyo, it is eager to highlight its alliances with authoritarian neighbours.

Kim Jong-Un vows to develop ties with China to 'new high'

The North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has vowed to develop ties with China to a new high. He made the comments after meeting with the high-level Chinese delegation that was in North Korea to mark the 70th Korean War anniversary also known as the Victory Day Parade. The Wizarding Chinese delegation was led by the Communist Party-spawned Bureau member Li Hongzhong who handed over a letter from President Xi Jinping to the North Korean leader.

<p>North Korea on Thursday unveiled two new unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) which, as per NK News, closely resembled US drones.</p>

<p>The country showcased its military prowess during the "Weapons and Equipment Exhibition 2023" that was held in Pyongyang. The event was held to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the armistice that halted the fighting in the 1950-53 Korean War.</p>

<p>It displayed the country's most advanced weaponry, including two previously unseen unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs).</p>

<h2><strong>On display, copies&nbsp;of US drones</strong></h2>

<p>The two new North Korean drones closely resemble the US military's RQ-4A Global Hawk and MQ-9 Reaper, which experts say signifies the nation's progress in developing combat and reconnaissance drone capabilities comparable to those of the United States.</p>

<p>However, as per a report in 'Independent,' Joseph Dempsey, a research associate at the International Institute for Strategic Studies said that while the UAVs visually resemble&nbsp;the US drones, they might not match their American counterparts in terms of performance capabilities.</p>

<p>"North Korea’s new UAV designs clearly emulate the US Global Hawk and Reaper visually but the key capabilities associated with both types–particularly in terms of flight performance, avionics or sensor payloads – will not be replicated so closely," he said.</p>

<p>As per the NK News report, one of the exhibited UAVs was equipped with two different types of missiles under its wings, reminiscent of the US MQ-9 Reaper combat UAV. The other model, which first seen during testing last month, boasts a wingspan of approximately 115 feet (35 metres) and a v-tail design.</p>

<p>Talking to the publication, Ankit Panda, Stanton Senior Fellow at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace said that while "the design does resemble several known drone designs, but that's not necessarily evidence that the North Koreans are relying on stolen information or knowledge."</p>

<p>The exhibition also featured North Korea's Hwasong-17 liquid-fuel ICBM, first launched in November 2022, along with its transporter erector launch vehicle (TEL).&nbsp;</p>

<p>Both, as per Independent, were displayed in camouflage paint schemes, indicating potential deployment to individual military units. It displayed the country's most advanced weaponry, including two previously unseen unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs). "North Korea’s new UAV designs clearly emulate the US Global Hawk and Reaper visually but the key capabilities associated with both types–particularly in terms of flight performance, avionics or sensor payloads – will not be replicated so closely," he said. The other model, which first seen during testing last month, boasts a wingspan of approximately 115 feet (35 metres) and a v-tail design. Talking to the publication, Ankit Panda, Stanton Senior Fellow at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace said that while "the design does resemble several known drone designs, but that's not necessarily evidence that the North Koreans are relying on stolen information or knowledge." Other features The exhibition also featured North Korea's Hwasong-17 liquid-fuel ICBM, first launched in November 2022, along with its transporter erector launch vehicle (TEL). Both, as per Independent, were displayed in camouflage paint schemes, indicating potential deployment to individual military units. Additionally, the Hwasong-18 solid-fuel ICBM, successfully tested in April and July, was showcased separately on stands next to its transporter.
