Typhoon Saola swept across southern China on Saturday after tearing down trees and smashing windows in Hong Kong, although the megacity avoided a feared direct hit from one of the region's strongest storms in decades.

Tens of millions of people in the densely populated coastal areas of southern China had sheltered indoors on Friday ahead of the storm.

Saola had triggered Hong Kong's highest threat level on Friday evening - issued only 16 times since World War II - and registered winds of around 210 kilometres per hour at its peak.

It was downgraded before dawn on Saturday as the typhoon passed the city and tracked towards coastal areas of mainland China -- where it weakened into a severe tropical storm.

So far, Hong Kong has had no reported casualties and far less damage than that created by 2018's powerful Typhoon Mangkhut, but authorities warned people to stay away from the shoreline as Saola was still whipping up strong gales.

AFP journalists saw multiple fallen trees strewn across Hong Kong roads, broken windows, and crumpled scaffolding from under-construction buildings, while local media reported that solar panels had been ripped off rooftops.

"Yesterday was a bit scary," Angelie said as she ventured out to meet a friend under a blanket of constant rain.

"In our (residential) estate, there were a lot of trees fallen, and some windows were broken."

Saola left Thomas Wong, a shopkeeper in Causeway Bay, stranded overnight in his home goods store.

"I didn't leave my shop because the transportation was not running...I had no choice," Wong said, adding that he lived in the northern Hong Kong district of Tai Po.

A resident in Hong Kong's Heng Fa Chuen housing estate, the site of devastation during the 2018 Typhoon Mangkhut -- said she felt "some swaying" in her building during the night

"But overall, we didn't feel unsafe," she told AFP, contrasting it to 2018's Mangkhut which had temporarily disrupted the supply of water and electricity in some housing blocks.

The last storm to earn the city's highest typhoon alert, Mangkhut shredded trees and unleashed floods across the city, leaving more than 300 people injured in its wake.

In mainland China, it killed six people and impacted the lives of more than three million others.

Hong Kong's Civil Aid Service said Saturday more than 500 people were deployed around the city to evaluate the damage, including volunteer workers who patrolled a low-lying fishing village in Lei Yue Mun district.

They removed twisted iron cladding to less wind-whipped areas and snapped photos of rising sea waters, as residents surveyed the pavement damage done to uprooted trees that pulled up concrete.

"I'm waiting to see if there is a storm surge and whether the waters will rise," one woman in Lei Yue Mun told a TV news station.

Hong Kong's airport gradually resumed flights, after mass cancellations and delays the day before, while neighbouring gambling hub Macau announced the reopening of casinos that had been closed for a day -- a rarity -- due to the severity of Saola.

Saola made landfall in the Chinese coastal city of Zhuhai, where workers on Saturday moved metal railings from roads and cleared sand whipped from a nearby beach.

By afternoon, it had moved west to the tourist island of Hailing in Guangdong province, bringing sustained winds at a speed of 100 kilometres (62 miles) per hour.

China had initially warned that Saola "may become the strongest typhoon to make landfall" in the region since 1949, but by Saturday afternoon, Guangdong province downgraded its emergency response due to the weakened windspeed.

Across the South China Sea on Saturday, another typhoon, Haikui, tracked rapidly towards Taiwan, where authorities raised land and sea warnings, though the impact was expected to be mild.

Nearly two weeks after Russia's Luna-25 lunar probe crashed into the Moon, US space agency NASA has released an image that shows the likely final resting place of the mission.

Nearly two weeks after Russia's Luna-25 lunar probe crashed into the Moon, US space agency NASA has released an image that shows the likely final resting place of the mission. NASA released a statement on Thursday (August 31) saying its sharp-eyed Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) had likely found the crash site last week. Using the estimated impact site data provided by Russia's space agency Roscosmos, NASA said LRO's handlers went looking for Luna-25's grave. Using the probe's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter Camera (LROC), the team managed to image the suspected crash site on August 24. After comparing the new image with a previous photo of the same region captured by LROC in June 2022, the team was able to make the discovery. Also read | Luna-25 crashes into moon; Russia’s lunar mission ends The before and after photos showed a bright, fresh crater on the moon that had developed in the past 14 months. "Since this new crater is close to the Luna-25 estimated impact point, the LRO team concludes it is likely to be from that mission, rather than a natural impactor," NASA said in a statement. According to the agency, the new crater is about 10 metres in diameter and is located at 57.865 degrees south latitude and 61.360 degrees east longitude at an elevation of about minus 360 meters. Notably, LRO is managed by NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland since being launched in June 2009. Watch | Luna 25: Russian lunar mission comes to an end: Spacecraft moved to an unpredictable orbit × What happened to Luna-25? Luna-25, the first Russian Moon mission in nearly 50 years, crashed into the lunar surface after it spun into an uncontrolled orbit. According to Roscosmos, a day prior to the crash, the probe reported an "emergency" while performing a routine manoeuvre. "During the operation, an emergency situation occurred on board the automatic station, which did not allow the manoeuvre to be performed with the specified parameters," Roscosmos stated. The lunar probe was expected to remain on the lunar surface for an entire year to perform critical scientific tasks of collecting samples and conducting soil analysis. The lander had as many as eight different science instruments on it. Luna-25 was launched on August 10 from the Vostochny Cosmodrome, in Russia's Far East region and reached the lunar orbit six days later. China continues to receive brute criticism from countries that were antagonised after its Ministry of Natural Resources released the controversial map. On Friday (September 1), Vietnam also released a statement saying the map violates its sovereignty over the Spratly and Paracel Islands and jurisdiction over its waters.

The moon is in the news these days. Just last week, on August 23rd (Wednesday), India made history by becoming the first nation to successfully land a spacecraft on the South Pole of the moon.

Just two days after India achieved the historic milestone with the landing of Chandrayaan-3 on the lunar surface, an entrepreneur, and educator from Jammu and Kashmir made a unique purchase: land on the Moon.

The man who owns a piece of Moon

Rupesh Masson is a 49-year-old businessman from Jammu and Kashmir. Masson as per the Mint, also serves as the regional director of UCMAS for Jammu and Kashmir and Leh.

Talking to Hindustan Times (HT), Masson shared the details of his lunar property. He revealed that he has purchased land on "Luna Earths Moon, Tract 55-Parcel 10772 known as Lacus Felicitatis (Lake of Happiness)."

Why buy land on the Moon?

Masson told HT that the idea behind buying a plot on the Moon was linked to humanity's inherent curiosity about what lies out there.

"Ideas of occupying space on the moon are a reflection of our quest to see what lies beyond, which is itself a reflection of our quest for deeper meaning within ourselves," he said.

This lunar property was purchased from The Lunar Registry in New York City and was officially certified on August 25, according to Masson.

He said that the Moon represents a symbol of hope for the future and could also serve as a psychological escape hatch for humans facing the challenges of climate change.

Masson believes that owning land on the Moon can provide a sense of preparedness for an uncertain future.

He also noted that approximately 675 celebrities and three former US presidents also own extraterrestrial land on the Moon and other planets.

Can I buy land on the Moon?

Yes, anyone can buy land on the moon. To do that, you can, like Masson, opt to buy plots from organisations like the Lunar Registry.

Currently, the price of a plot at Lacus Felicitatis — where Masson purchased land — is $29.07 per acre (₹2,405 per acre), as listed on the Lunar Registry website.

There are other locations, like the Sea of Rains and the Bay of Rainbows on the Moon, where land is available for purchase.

However, you will have to get in the queue. The success of India's Chandrayaan-3 lunar mission appears to have contributed to increased interest in purchasing lunar land.

The Lunar Registry has reported a surge in orders following Chandrayaan-3's successful landing. Due to high demand, the company is facing delays in processing and fulfilling land ownership documents.

"Due to extremely high order volume following the successful landing of Chandrayaan-3, we are currently experiencing lengthy processing and fulfilment delays," said the company on its website.

The man who owns a piece of Moon Rupesh Masson is a 49-year-old businessman from Jammu and Kashmir. Masson as per the Mint, also serves as the regional director of UCMAS for Jammu and Kashmir and Leh. Talking to Hindustan Times (HT), Masson shared the details of his lunar property. He revealed that he has purchased land on "Luna Earths Moon, Tract 55-Parcel 10772 known as Lacus Felicitatis (Lake of Happiness)." Also read | Chandrayaan-3: ‘Pragyan’ completes 7 days on moon, ISRO chief says ‘everything is working fine’ Why buy land on the Moon? Masson told HT that the idea behind buying a plot on the Moon was linked to humanity's inherent curiosity about what lies out there. "Ideas of occupying space on the moon are a reflection of our quest to see what lies beyond, which is itself a reflection of our quest for deeper meaning within ourselves," he said. This lunar property was purchased from The Lunar Registry in New York City and was officially certified on August 25, according to Masson. He said that the Moon represents a symbol of hope for the future and could also serve as a psychological escape hatch for humans facing the challenges of climate change.
