The oldest prisoner at Guantanamo Bay prison, Saifullah Paracha has been released and sent back to Pakistan after nearly 20 years.

Pakistan's foreign ministry reportedly confirmed the news of the release. In a statement, the ministry said, "We are glad that a Pakistani citizen detained abroad is finally reunited with his family." Paracha returned to Pakistan on October 29.

Two years after the 11 September 2001 attacks on the US, Paracha, now 75, was detained on suspicion of financing the terrorist group al-Qaeda. Although he was only suspected, Paracha always insisted on being innocent and was never charged.

Paracha's lawyer, Clive Stafford-Smith, questioned why his release took so long despite being cleared for a release for over a year now.

In a conversation with BBC, Smith said, "He's been cleared for release [for] well over a year... he used to hum to me The Eagles song Hotel California, where you can [according to the lyrics] check out 'but you can never leave'."

Further adding, he said that Guantanamo is an embarrassment to the US. He said he still has four clients who are certified for release.

Residents and a local official reported that M23 rebel fighters took over the town of Kiwanja in eastern Congo on Saturday, completely cutting off Goma, the capital of North Kivu, from the province's upper half.

After a brief exchange of gunfire on Saturday morning, three Kiwanja residents told Reuters that hordes of fighters had rolled into the town without encountering much resistance.

Four peacekeepers were hurt in the combat, according to a UN intervention brigade that has been assisting government forces. The future of the town was not addressed in the statement.

"Attacks against U.N. peacekeepers may constitute war crimes," it said, as reported by Reuters. "(The mission) calls on this rebel group to immediately cease all belligerence and warns that it stands ready to respond vigorously in the event of further aggression."

Residents claimed that the Congolese army force that had been guarding the town had left the day before. To move the combat away from communities and safeguard civilians, the army has strategically retreated from populous regions.

The army withdrew from Rumangabo, their main camp in the region, on Saturday, according to Kivu Security Tracker, which also reported that M23 had surrounded the nearby UN peacekeeper camp and the Virunga National Park.

The Congo Research Group, housed at the Center on International Cooperation at New York University, and Human Rights Watch collaborated on the tracker, which employs researchers based throughout eastern Congo, especially in North Kivu.

Saidi Balikwisha Emil, a member of North Kivu's provincial parliament, said in a WhatsApp message, "The fall of Kiwanja and elsewhere is a national disgrace, especially for those of us who spend entire days on social networks casting aspersions on our army."

According to a curator at the German museum, an abstract painting by Dutch artist Piet Mondrian has been hanging upside down for 77 years.

At the Kunstsammlung museum in Düsseldorf, a sizable retrospective of the avant-garde artist's work debuted on Saturday. Among the works on display is "New York City 1," a 1941 painting.

Susanne Meyer-Buser, the exhibition's curator, learned as she was getting ready for the presentation that the picture had been displayed to the public somewhat differently than it had perhaps been meant.

"In a photo from 1944, I saw that the canvas was the other way around on an easel. It intrigued me," Meyer-Buser told the German daily Suddeutsche Zeitung.

The painting, which was made up of multiple lines in blue, red, and yellow that intersected at right angles, was later shown incorrectly at MoMA in New York, according to the curator.

In 1980, it was moved to a museum in Düsseldorf where a similar display was constructed.

According to Meyer-Buser, the mistake might have been made because "the painting doesn't have a signature."

When Mondrian passed away in 1944, "the artist's name inscribed on the back of the frame by the administrator of the (artist's estate)" certainly played a role in the choice to display the piece in the way it has been for decades.

Mondrian, who was born in 1872, was a well-known representative of the abstract painting movement "De Stijl" in the 1920s and one of the most significant figures in 20th-century contemporary art.

He relocated to New York in 1940, where the city's skyscrapers and layout served as an inspiration for his horizontal lines. 1944 saw his death in New York.

The authorities in N'Djamena said in a statement on Saturday that a Franco-Australian person had been abducted in eastern Chad, close to the Sudanese border, "by as yet unidentified individuals."

"The government has mobilised all security and human means to catch the kidnappers," the authorities said, as reported by AFP.

"This abduction occurred yesterday, in the afternoon of October 28, 2022," a statement added, without giving details of the abduction.

"We are aware of the kidnapping of one of our citizens in Chad and are in contact with their family, and also with the authorities in Chad, in order to secure their rapid release," the French foreign ministry told AFP.

The man who was kidnapped was employed by a park run by the wildlife NGO Sahara Conservation Fund. In order to help the endangered scimitar-horned oryx, a fund was established in 2004.

Since his father was killed during an operation against rebels in April 2021, Chad has been governed by a military junta under the leadership of Mahamat Idriss Deby.

The man who was kidnapped was employed by a park run by the wildlife NGO Sahara Conservation Fund. In order to help the endangered scimitar-horned oryx, a fund was established in 2004. The newly appointed Zulu monarch, King Msizulu kaZwelinthini has been formally handed a certificate of recognition by South African President Cyril Ramaphosa. The ceremony which took place in Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal province, saw scores of supporters celebrating their King.

Thousands of Zulu men, women, and children, from all over the country clad in their colourful traditional attire, flocked to Moses Mabhida stadium singing and dancing to witness King Msizulu KaZwelithini receive his certificate of recognition. Songs of praise for the Zulu King could be heard far and wide.

President Cyril Ramaphosa handed a certificate to the King to formally recognize him as the head of the Zulu nation.

The King is regarded as a public servant and in order to have the benefits - which include government funding and protection - he must have been recognised by the President in terms of Section 8(3)(a) and (b) of the Traditional and Khoi-San Leadership Act.

"Today we are here to witness a new epoch in the history of AmaZulu. As President of the Republic, I am here to hand over the certificate of recognition to His Majesty, King Misuzulu kaZwelithini. I do so to fulfil my duty under our Constitution, which affirms the role of our kings and queens," Ramaphosa told the gathering at Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal province.

The last time the AmaZulu nation witnessed the coronation was 51 years ago.

King Misuzulu Kazwelithini is the 9th monarch of the Zulu nation, the country's largest and most powerful ethnic group.

The throne became vacant following the passing of the longest-serving Zulu Monarch, Goodwill Zwelithini on 12 March 2021. He left behind six wives and at least 28 children.

Misuzulu is the first son of Zwelithini’s third wife, who he designated as regent in his will.

After the passing of king Goodwill Zwelinthini, a royal feud soon ensued on who the successor should be. This state coronation will also put an end to the embarrassing family battle moving forward.

Addressing his people and the delegates, Misuzulu said that history had chosen him this time and he vowed to look after his people and preserve Zulu culture and tradition.

"Today I am addressing you and the world....for the hope and future for the Zulus...I understand history has chosen me as Zulu and others are facing several challenges...I also understand the hand of history has chosen me....upon my arrival at oral, I promised to usher you...I will walk this journey with you," the monarch said.

The state coronation was attended by Monarchs from at least eight African countries, international delegates, former heads of state, and politicians, amongst many others.

The Zulu people displayed a spectacular culture and thousands came to attendance. It is now hoped that the royal family feud will rest in bed and the Zulu nation will unite and hold its fort.

Tens of thousands braved downpours in Taiwan on Saturday to celebrate as the island staged its first LGBTQ Pride rally since fully reopening its border.

Taiwan is at the vanguard of the burgeoning LGBTQ rights movement in Asia and became the first place in the region to legalise marriage equality in 2019.

Its capital Taipei hosts one of Asia's largest Pride marches annually except for last year when a surge in Covid cases forced the event online.

The festivity was back in full swing on Saturday as marchers donned eye-catching costumes and draped themselves in rainbow flags in Taiwan's 20th Pride march, with organisers estimating the turnout was 120,000.

"I'm so very excited to be a part of the first physical parade in two years," said 40-year-old service industry worker Wolf Yang, sporting a gold bodysuit with a matching sequined headpiece and nose ring.

Max, a 35-year-old French national, joined the march for the first time since moving to Taiwan last year, along with several friends who flew in from Japan and South Korea.

"I think Taiwan needs to be proud of that. It's a great thing to recognise gay marriage. Asia and the world need to be proud of it."

A record crowd of 200,000 joined the 2019 Pride march to celebrate after Taiwan legalised same-sex marriages that year.

At least 7,000 same-sex couples have wed since then, although the law still contains restrictions that heterosexual couples do not face.

Under the current rules, Taiwanese nationals can only marry those from roughly 30 countries and territories where same-sex marriage is also legal.

College student Virginia Li, 22, said she joined the parade with about 20 friends from eastern Hualien city to support gay rights.

"Taiwan is much more friendly to the gay community than many countries...I am proud of the progress that has been made."

The announcement comes after deploying over a quarter of the gathered soldiers to the front lines.

The process of mobilisation began in late September after the president in his televised address announced the need of deploying Russian soldiers to Ukraine for the fight.

Maurice Hastings, 69, a man wronged by the judicial system has finally been given his due. Reportedly, Hastings has been released from a California prison after having spent 38 years for a 1983 murder and two attempted murders, which, he, in fact, never committed. The Los Angeles county district attorney (DA) on Friday said Hastings was released after long-untested DNA evidence pointed to a different individual who might have committed the crime. Read more: US man wrongly serves 20 years in prison, released after twin brother's confession Speaking about the freedom that came his way after years of endless wait, Hastings said he wasn't bitter. "I prayed for many years that this day would come. I am not pointing fingers. I am not standing up here a bitter man, but I just want to enjoy my life now while I have it," Hastings told media at a news conference. Meanwhile, LA district attorney George Gascón said what happened to Hastings' was a terrible injustice. “What has happened to Mr Hastings is a terrible injustice. The justice system is not perfect, and when we learn of new evidence which causes us to lose confidence in a conviction, it is our obligation to act swiftly.” Hastings was wrongfully convicted in the murder of Roberta Wydermyer who was sexually assaulted and killed with a gunshot to the head. Hastings was later charged with special-circumstance murder and a death penalty was sought by the DA's office. While the first jury couldn't reach a consensus, the second jury convicted him and the court sentenced him to life in prison without parole. Hastings maintained his innocence all throughout the court proceedings but to no avail. In 2000, he requested DNA testing of the material that was gathered by the coroner of the body of Wydermyer which included swabbing of various body parts and an oral swab that detected semen. The DA, however, refused his request. It was only last year that DA’s Conviction Integrity Unit tested the material and found that the semen was not Hastings'. While Hastings simply wants to get on with his life, others, similarly wrongfully impacted by the broken judicial system are not being too kind. Recently, a Kansas man who spent 23 years in prison after being wrongly convicted for a double murder is seeking $93m in damages from the country and said that he was framed by a former detective. It was around two years ago that Mahendran, 42, hailing from Chennai and Deepa, 36, from Vellore had begun their treatment at the hospital. Circumstances at their respective homes and their personal issues had mentally affected the duo and they were admitted as resident patients at the facility.

Responding well to the treatment, the duo began to show improvement and were moved to a Care Centre in the institute and were also allowed to perform small tasks and vocational duties. Mahendran who had an M.Phil degree began to work as an assisting staff at the hospital, whereas Deepa who had completed Teacher's training started working at the in-house bakery.

It is said that love had blossomed between the two individuals, during the early phase of their stay and recovery at the hospital. Doctors had strictly recommended that they would have to complete the full course of treatment before going ahead and tying the knot. The wish of the couple finally came true on Friday, 28th October, as they tied the knot in the presence of doctors, hospital staff, their respective families and government officials.

On Friday, former US president Donald Trump praised Jair Bolsonaro as a "great" leader and urged Brazilians to give him a second term in office.

Trump promoted Bolsonaro's reelection for the second time in the post, calling him "a fantastic man, one of the great presidents of any country in the world" prior to the first-round vote on October 2.

In the Sunday runoff, polls indicate that Lula has a slight advantage, although Bolsonaro shocked polling companies by outperforming expectations in the first round on October 2.

A report released on Friday (October 28) revealed that intensified heatwaves caused due to climate change has caused the world economy trillions of dollars over the past 30 years, with developing nations bearing the costs.

The report comes just days before the announcement of the COP27 climate summit in Egypt, where one of the main subjects to address is nations that are vulnerable to climate change.

Published in the journal Science Advances, the study also stated that unequal economic outcomes have also contributed to inequality around the world.

The study estimated that between 1992 to 2013, the cost of high heat cost the roughly global economy roughly $16 billion dollars.

As per the data, poorer countries have lost nearly 6.7 per cent of their yearly GDPs whereas the developed and rich countries have lost nearly 1.5 per cent.

Following a deadlock between the UK and local politicians over post-Brexit trade regulations, the British government announced on Friday that elections in Northern Ireland would be called within 12 weeks, for the second time since May.

Prior to a deadline on Friday to resume a power-sharing devolved government, Northern Ireland Secretary Chris Heaton-Harris announced that negotiations with the UK province's contentious political groups had not resulted in a breakthrough.

"As of earlier today, an executive can no longer form and I am duty-bound by law to call new elections to the Northern Ireland Assembly... as soon as practicably possible and within 12 weeks," he said in a statement.

Heaton-Harris told reporters that he would have more to say next week after meeting with local election officials "to discuss operational considerations to inform my decision about the election date."

The UK minister maintained that he had no other choice despite the fact that political parties in Belfast opposed having a second election in less than a year.

Since the pro-UK Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) broke power-sharing in February over its vehement opposition to the so-called Northern Ireland Protocol dictating post-Brexit trade regulations, the province has been without a devolved administration for nine months.

It wants the agreement, which effectively puts Northern Ireland in the customs union and single market of the European Union, to be completely revised.

Jeffrey Donaldson, the head of the DUP, justified the position taken by his party, saying the protocol "harms our economy, harms our people and prevents us getting access to medicines and other vital supplies."
