Panama's Supreme Court has ruled against same-sex marriages, saying it's not a human right and, therefore, the country does not recognise such unions.

The court in its ruling dated Feb 16, said, "there is a reality, and it is that, until now, the right to equal marriage is no more than an aspiration, even though a legitimate one for the groups involved, and it does not fall into the category of a human right or a fundamental right."

The court had been considering the issue since 2016, after several appeals from same-sex couples claiming the country's family code "unconstitutional," as it only recognises marriage between a man and woman.

The same-sex couples filed the suit attempting to make their marriages legal in the Central American country, like many other developed countries.

However, the court said that no matter how many changes happen in reality, for now, gay marriages lack "conventional and constitutional recognition."

It added that the family code is objectively and reasonably justified in the general interests of giving precedence to those unions capable of establishing families, giving continuity to humans and society.

Reacting to the Feb 16 ruling, Ivan Chanis, president of the gay rights organisation Fundacion Iguales told AFP, “ the Panamanian justice system has rejected the recognition of the dignity of same-sex couples and their right to build a family in Panama.”

As per AFP, the Catholic Church which opposes same-sex couples holds a strong influence in Panama.

Currently, Costa Rica remains the only Central American country to recognise same-sex marriages.

Himalayan Lynx or Cougar? Video shows rare animal spotted in Ladakh, netizens in awe. Watch!

Former UK health secretary Matt Hancock denied all claims that he rejected expert advice on Covid tests for people going into care homes when the pandemic began.

These claims come as during an investigation by a journalist named Isabel Oakeshott published some 100,000 WhatsApp messages or around 2.3 million words, including Hancock's texts exchanges with the current UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, Boris Johnson and a few others while working on his 'Pandemic Dairies' book, City AM reported.

According to the investigation, Professor Chris Witty, chief medical officer back then advised Hancock that anyone going into care homes should be tested.

But leaked texts suggest that he rejected the guidance and introduced mandatory Covid testing for hospital leavers.

The MP then hit back at these claims, saying "it is outrageous that this distorted account of the pandemic is being pushed with partial leaks, spun to fit an anti-lockdown agenda."

A spokesperson for Hancock claimed that a "key part" of WhatsApp messages was left out by the report. "The Telegraph have doctored the messages by excluding a key line from the texts by Allan Nixon."

The spokesperson added that all of these claims are untrue and Hancock went as far and as fast as possible in expanding testing and saving lives in the country.

On releasing the texts, Oakeshott in writing in the Telegraph said that she released the text messages as the inquiry may take many years before coming to any conclusions and claimed: "the whole thing may become a colossal whitewash."

Hancock also said that the right place for questions about the pandemic response is the official inquiry led by former Court of Appeal judge Baroness Heather Hallett.

A Pakistani court issued a non-bailable arrest warrant against former prime minister Imran Khan in the Toshakhana case on Tuesday. However, he was granted protective bail by two Islamabad courts in three other cases. High drama unfolded outside the court premises where thousands of his supporters converged to support him.

Khan has had a number of cases registered against him ever since he was ousted from power last year, that range from gathering illegal funds for his party to inciting violence against state officials.

According to Reuters, he arrived at the courts in a car, which was followed by hundreds of his supporters, chanting and covering the car with flower petals, and was given special permission to take his car inside the Islamabad court due to security concerns.

The federal court then issued a non-bailable arrest warrant for non-appearance before the court.

However, Khan's lawyers said that they would reach the court to cancel the warrant because he got delayed due to traffic jams as his supporters went to the streets clogging the roads.

A Russian court on Tuesday (Feb 28), fined the Wikimedia Foundation, which runs Wikipedia, two million roubles ($27,000) for 'misinformation' about the Russian military.

This latest fine was imposed after the authorities accused Wikipedia of "spreading misinformation" in its articles about the Russian military units, Wikimedia Russia said, according to a Reuters report.

Australian people conceived through donor sperm or egg may soon have greater access to their genetic history. The Queensland government, as per a Guardian report, has accepted a new set of recommendations in this regard. The recommendations were presented in response to a parliamentary inquiry on the issue and the government has given its in-principal support, the paper reported. Under this, the so-called donor-conceived children, once they attain the age of 18, will legally be provided with the right to know the identity of the donor and their genetic siblings, if any.

For this to work, as per the government, Queensland will have to establish a central donor conception register. This will probably involve developing IT systems and digitising historical records.
