Vanuatu declared a state of emergency on Friday after two earthquakes struck back-to-back, and a second cyclone lashed the Pacific nation.

The US Geological Survey reported the first 6.5 magnitude earthquake at 1804 GMT off the island of Espiritu Santo in the north at a depth of 10 kilometres. An aftershock with a magnitude of 5.4 struck the island shortly after.

Cyclone Judy had lashed the country with winds up to 200 kilometres (125 miles) per hour, just two days earlier.

When the quake struck, locals were already dealing with torn roofs and buildings from the cyclone. While the roads are still flooded, electricity and communications are still affected across the island country.

The US Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) along with Gambian scientists have concluded that the contaminated cough syrups imported into Gambia are likely the cause of the deaths of 66 children due to acute kidney injury.

The report published in the New England Journal of Medicine on Thursday strongly suggested that medicines contaminated with the toxins led to a cluster of acute kidney injuries among 78 kids, and 66 deaths between June and September 2022.

The official death toll now stands at 70, after four more children died since September 2022. Most of the kids were aged under two.

The conclusions were reached after examination of medical records of patients and interviewes with parents and caregivers. It also mentioned other evidences contributing to the conclusion such as the tests of the medicines, the fact that the illness did not spread to adults and pointed towards a toxin agent rather than an infectious.

The links between the contaminated medicine and children's deaths came to light in October 2022, when the World Health Organization (WHO) raised an alert saying four cough syrups made by India's Maiden Pharmaceuticals Ltd contain toxic levels of diethylene and ethylene glycol and should be stopped.

The US Justice Department in a court filing on Thursday said that former president Donald Trump can be sued by police officials and others injured in the January 6 assault. The department in an official legal opinion said that although the president has absolute immunity for his official acts in office, he still can be sued for his actions outside his official duties.

Retail theft in Australia has hit record levels, the government statistics show, putting pressure on grocery giants like Coles Group Ltd and Woolworths Group Ltd which are already struggling with rising supply costs and freight blockages.

Store theft in New South Wales rose by 23.7 per cent from 2021 to 2022, the official figures showed on Thursday, being the fastest year-on-year increase since records began in the year 1995, Reuters reported.

These companies together account for two-thirds of Australia's grocery sales and noticed rising store theft in trading last month.

The Chinese-owned video sharing app TikTok will soon set a new default screen time limit of 60 minutes for its users under the age of 18. According to the app, if an individual hits the daily screen time limit, they will then have to enter a passcode to continue to use the service that day, which they will receive in their app only. It also stated that users will be given a choice to opt out of this new measure.

The social media company said it is introducing this new measure to help people "stay in control" of their use, which will roll out in the coming weeks, CNN reported.

If anyone uses the app for over 100 minutes a day, they will receive a prompt from the app to set their own screen time controls.

Parents of young children will also be able to set the screen limit according to their convenience, and will be able to access the dashboard, which could give them a specific breakdown of app usage.

Head of trust and safety at the app, Cormac Keenan, said the company worked with researchers in developing the new limits. He said, "while there's no collectively endorsed position on the 'right' amount of screen time, or even the impact of screen time more broadly, we consulted the current academic research and experts from the Digital Wellness Lab at Boston Children's Hospital in choosing this limit."

This new measure comes after the app prompted teens last year to manage their screen time. The app said that this helped "increase the use of screen tools by 234 per cent."
