Self-driving cars or autonomous vehicles (AV) are the future. The idea of a car that can drive itself without any effort on your side might sound like a grand idea, but experts warn that this is not feasible in the absence of helpful human supervision.

As per Reuters, in order to build truly self-driving automobiles, autonomous vehicle (AV) firms have raised tens of billions of dollars. Much of the research and investment has been motivated by the fundamental idea that computers and artificial intelligence will significantly minimise accidents brought on by human error.

Can self-driving cars ever be truly autonomous? Experts say 'no'

Nearly two years after President Donald Trump refused to accept his defeat in the 2020 election, some of his most loyal Republican acolytes might follow in his footsteps.

When asked, six Trump-backed Republican nominees for governor and the Senate in midterm battlegrounds would not commit to accepting this year’s election results, and another six Republicans ignored or declined to answer a question about embracing the November outcome. All of them, along with many other GOP candidates, have preemptively cast doubt on how their states count votes.

The New York Times contacted Republican and Democratic candidates or their aides in 20 key contests for governor and the Senate. All of the Democrats said, or have said publicly, that they would respect the November results — including Stacey Abrams of Georgia, who refused to concede her 2018 defeat to Brian Kemp in the state’s race for governor. Kemp, now running against her for another term, “will of course accept the outcome of the 2022 election,” said his press secretary, Tate Mitchell.

But several Republicans endorsed by Trump are hesitant to say that they will not fight the results.

Among the party’s Senate candidates, Rep. Ted Budd in North Carolina, Blake Masters in Arizona, Kelly Tshibaka in Alaska and J.D. Vance in Ohio all declined to commit to accepting the 2022 results. So did Tudor Dixon, the Republican nominee for governor of Michigan, and Geoff Diehl, who won the GOP primary for governor of Massachusetts this month.

The candidates and their aides offered an array of explanations. Some blamed Democratic state election officials or made unsubstantiated claims that their opponents would cheat. In Alaska, a spokesperson for Tshibaka pointed to a new ranked choice voting system that has been criticised by Republicans and already helped deliver victory to a Democrat in a House special election this year.

An aide to Dixon, Sara Broadwater, said “there’s no reason to believe” that Michigan election officials, including Jocelyn Benson, the Democratic secretary of state, “are very serious about secure elections.”

To some degree, the stances by these Republican candidates — which echo Trump’s comments before the 2016 and 2020 presidential elections — may amount to political posturing, in an effort to appeal to GOP voters who do not believe the former president lost in 2020. An aide to one Republican nominee insisted that the candidate would accept this year’s results, but the aide declined to be publicly identified saying so.

And unlike Trump two years ago, the candidates who suggest they might dispute the November results do not hold executive office and lack control of the levers of government power. If any were to reject a fair defeat, they would be far less likely to ignite the kind of democratic crisis that Trump set off after his 2020 loss.

But they do have loud megaphones in a highly polarized media environment, and any unwarranted challenges from the candidates and their allies could fuel anger, confusion and misinformation.

“The danger of a Trumpist coup is far from over,” said Rosa Brooks, a law professor at Georgetown University who in early 2020 convened a group to brainstorm ways Trump could disrupt that year’s election. “As long as we have a significant number of Americans who don’t accept principles of democracy and the rule of law, our democracy remains in jeopardy.”

The positions of these Republican candidates also reflect how, over the past two years, some of those aligned with Trump increasingly reject the idea that it is possible for their side to lose a legitimate election.

“You accept the results of the election if the election is fair and honest,” said John Fredericks, a syndicated talk radio host who was a chair of Trump’s campaigns in Virginia in 2016 and 2020. “If it’s not fair and honest, you don’t.”

Still, many Republican candidates, including several who have cast doubt on the 2020 outcome, said they would recognize this year’s results. Darren Bailey, the Republican nominee for governor of Illinois — who said in a June interview that he did not know if the 2020 election had been decided fairly — responded that “yes,” he would accept the 2022 result.

In Nevada, the campaign of Adam Laxalt, the Republican nominee for Senate, said he would not challenge the final results — even though Laxalt, a former state attorney general, helped lead the effort to overturn Trump’s 2020 defeat in the state, spoke last year about plans to file lawsuits to contest the 2022 election and called voter fraud the “biggest issue” in his campaign.

“Of course he’ll accept Nevada’s certified election results, even if your failing publication won’t,” said Brian Freimuth, a spokesperson for Laxalt.

And Dr Mehmet Oz in Pennsylvania, who said during his successful Republican primary campaign for Senate that “we cannot move on” from the 2020 election, promised to uphold voters’ will.

“Yes, Dr Oz will accept the result of the PA Senate race in November,” Rachel Tripp, an Oz spokesperson, wrote in a text message.

Three other Republican Senate candidates — Herschel Walker in Georgia, Joe O’Dea in Colorado and Sen. Lisa Murkowski in Alaska — committed to embracing their state’s election results. So did several Republicans running for governor, including Kemp, Joe Lombardo in Nevada and Christine Drazan of Oregon.

Aides to several Republican nominees for governor who have questioned the 2020 election’s legitimacy did not respond to repeated requests for comment on their own races in November. Those candidates included Doug Mastriano of Pennsylvania, Kari Lake of Arizona, Tim Michels of Wisconsin and Dan Cox of Maryland.

Lake was asked in a radio interview this month whether she would concede a defeat to Katie Hobbs, her Democratic rival and Arizona’s secretary of state. “I’m not losing to Katie Hobbs,” Lake replied.

Hobbs’ spokesperson, Sarah Robinson, said her candidate “will accept the results of the election in November.”

Aides to Sen. Ron Johnson of Wisconsin and Don Bolduc, the Republican Senate nominee in New Hampshire, declined to answer questions about acknowledging the results. Johnson has been a prolific spreader of misinformation about the 2020 election and the Capitol riot. Bolduc claimed that the 2020 contest was stolen from Trump until Thursday when he announced two days after winning his primary that President Joe Biden had won legitimately.

During a Republican primary debate in Michigan in June, Dixon would not commit to honouring the results of the primary — which she went on to win — or the general election, preemptively accusing Benson, the secretary of state, of election fraud.

“If we see the secretary of state running a fair election the way she should be, then that’s a different story,” Dixon said. “We have to see what she’s going to do to make sure it’s going to be a fair election.”

In a statement, a representative for Benson said she and her staff “work tirelessly to ensure the state’s elections are secure and accurate, and expect every candidate and election official to respect the will of the people.”

In Arizona — where Republicans spent months on a government-funded review of 2020 ballots that failed to show any evidence of fraud — Masters, the Trump-backed Republican nominee for Senate, baselessly predicted to supporters in July that even if he defeated Sen. Mark Kelly, the incumbent Democrat, enough votes would somehow be produced to flip the result.

“There’s always cheating, probably, in every election,” Masters said. “The question is, what’s the cheating capacity?”

A Masters aide, Katie Miller, sent the Times an August article in The Arizona Republic in which Masters said there was “evidence of incompetence” but not of fraud in the state’s primary election. Miller declined to say if Masters would respect the November results.

Kelly “has total trust in Arizona’s electoral process,” said a spokesperson, Sarah Guggenheimer.

An aide to Vance, Taylor Van Kirk, cited the candidate’s primary-season endorsement from Ohio’s Republican secretary of state, Frank LaRose. At the time, Vance predicted “a successfully run primary election.” But Van Kirk would not say if Vance would recognize the November outcome. Vance did not respond to messages.

Vance’s Democratic opponent, Rep. Tim Ryan, “will accept the results of the election,” said his spokesperson, Jordan Fuja.

In Alaska, Republican hesitancy to accept election results centres on the new ranked choice voting system. After losing an August special election for the House, Sarah Palin warned baselessly that the method was “very, very potentially fraught with fraud.”

Tim Murtaugh, a spokesperson for Tshibaka, who is challenging Murkowski, a fellow Republican, said his candidate would not commit to honouring the race’s outcome. Murtaugh said — not without merit — that the new voting system “was installed to protect Lisa Murkowski.”

Murkowski’s spokesperson, Shea Siegert, said that “the Alaskan people can trust” the state’s elections.

Jonathan Felts, a spokesperson for Budd, North Carolina’s Republican nominee for Senate — who in Congress voted against certifying the 2020 election — declined to say if Budd would uphold the state’s results and claimed without evidence that Cheri Beasley, the Democratic nominee and a former state Supreme Court justice, might try to disenfranchise voters.

Beasley said, “I trust that our 2022 election will be administered fairly.”

Officials on other Republican campaigns expressed worries that if voters heard too much scepticism about the validity of this year’s elections, it could lead to a replay of the Georgia Senate races in January 2021, when Democrats eked out two narrow victories after Trump spent weeks railing falsely about election fraud.

“The most important thing is to not get depressed about the elections and say, ‘Oh, it’s going to be stolen, so what’s the point of doing this?’” Diehl, the Republican nominee for governor of Massachusetts, said in a recent radio interview.

Diehl’s spokesperson, Peggy Rose, replied “no comment” when asked if he would agree to the outcome of the November election.

His Democratic opponent, Maura Healey, the state’s attorney general, said, “We will always accept the will of the people.”

At this point, everyone (except a few naysayers) acknowledge that climate change is a reality and we are all facing a very real danger. The Earth is warming up, the ice caps are melting, and despite the fact that organisations and national governments around the world have set lofty goals, we are mostly at a loss for what can be done to speedily reverse the situation.

Now, scientists have proposed an ambitious and some might say downright "bizarre" plan to reverse the ice loss: they want to refreeze the north and south poles.

A recent study carried out by Wake Smith of Yale University and published in Environmental Research Communications proposes that a high-flying aircraft will spray small aerosol particles into the atmosphere at latitudes of 60 degrees north and south.

These aerosols would gradually float poleward if dispersed at a height of 43,000 feet significantly shading the ground below, claims the study. They say that the additional shade would allow the melting poles to refreeze, reducing the problems of melting glacier ice and rising sea levels.

According to the scientists, the method would "abate climate change by deflecting back into space a small fraction of the incoming solar radiation."

Scientists suggest a stop-gap solution for 'refreezing' melting ice; will cost whopping $11 billion yearly

A Chinese business has come under fire for allegedly placing cameras in the restrooms used by its employees. According to reports, these cameras were installed to keep an eye out for employees who defied the rigorous no-smoking rule at the company.

The company in question is a subsidiary of China Aviation Lithium Battery, a state-owned battery producer located in Xiamen, in the southern Chinese province of Fujian.

'A dystopian nightmare': Chinese firm films employees in loo as a method of enforcing its 'no smoking rule'

Two people have died and almost 90 have been injured as Japan is battered by super typhoon Nanmadol.

The typhoon is being described as one of the worst typhoons ever witnessed in the country. As per BBC, authorities have ordered the evacuation of nine million people as the nation prepares for extensive floods and landslides and transportation and businesses suffer.

On Sunday morning, it made landfall on Kyushu, the southernmost island in Japan, and it is expected to move over Honshu in the coming days.

Nearly 350,000 houses are going without electricity, and tens of thousands of people were forced to spend Sunday night in emergency shelters.

Typhoon Nanmadol has produced wind gusts as high as 234 km/h (145 mph), and 500 mm (around 20 inches) of rain was projected to fall in some locations in a single day.

NHK, the government-run television station, reported that two men died, one when a landslide buried him and the other after his automobile was swept away in floodwaters. 87 people have suffered injuries, and one more person is still missing.

Is artificial intelligence (AI) as smart as humans or is it smarter? As per scientists, it takes the human brain 25 years to reach full maturity, but new research claims that the AI used by Elon musk's Tesla could equal that in only 17 years.

Researchers have long predicted that artificial intelligence will eventually surpass human intelligence, although there are different predictions as to when that will happen.

According to a study by Autotrader company Vanarama, Tesla's new microchip will be "more intelligent" than humans by 2033.

The study points out that it already has processing capability equivalent to 36 per cent of a human brain. About 100 billion neurons make up a human brain, which triples in size during a baby's first year and develops fully by the age of 25.

There is no dearth of movies showing robots and artificial intelligence taking over the world; we've seen it all from the Terminator to Avengers: Age of Ultron. Did these movies make you just a little bit scared? Or did they make you wonder if that is our future? After all, movies have at times predicted what's coming.

Well, as per a Daily Mail report, the "world's most advanced" humanoid robot has reassured that there's no need to worry and this is unlikely to become a reality.

Robots are here 'for good, or bad,' but will they take over the world? World's most advanced humanoid says no

In Paris, the skeleton of a small dinosaur that lived millions of years ago is up for auction, and auctioneers claim that its size "is perfect for someone's living room". However, experts and palaeontologists say that the archaeological find belongs in a museum and not some rich guy's living room.

The skeleton is believed to be of an iguanodon dinosaur and it measures about four feet (1.3 metres) tall and 9.8 feet (three metres) long, making it small enough to fit in a run-of-the-mill living room. But is it appropriate to showcase such a scientific discovery as a trophy?

Palaeontologist Steve Brusatte, who works with the University of Edinburgh in Scotland, disagrees. It's "much more than just ornaments for the rich to put in their living rooms," he said while talking to Daily Mail.

"A dinosaur would look pretty good in my living room too, but they don't belong there. They belong in a museum, where they can be conserved, studied by scientists, and displayed to the public, where they educate and inspire", said Brusatte.

Another palaeontologist, Thomas Carr of the Carthage College in Wisconsin believes that the specimen has been misidentified and is actually another herbivore called camptosaurus.

Speaking to Daily Mail, he said that although he is not an expert on ornithopod dinosaurs, auction houses "shouldn't be in the business of selling things they know nothing about" if they "can't even identify the fossil correctly."

In recent times, Dinosaur bones have gone from being the subject of research to expensive art pieces. Once they were almost exclusively purchased by museums for reasonable prices are now sold to the highest bidder for millions.

Auctioneer Alexandre Giquello, while talking to Reuters said that the specimen, known as "Zephyr," is the perfect size for a one-of-a-kind piece of home décor. It is estimated to sell for between 400,000 and 500,000 euros ($495,000).

'Home décor or scientific discovery': Experts express dismay as dinosaur skeleton goes up for sale

If reports are to be believed former President Donald Trump after losing the 2021 elections vowed that he won't leave the White House.

As per a CNN report, a New York Times reporter in her forthcoming book has made this revelation.

The reporter Maggie Haberman, in her book, "Confidence Man: The Making of Donald Trump and the Breaking of America," revealed that Trump repeatedly told his aides that he would not let incoming President Joe Biden take over and that he's "just not going to leave".

He reportedly said to one aide: "We're never leaving" adding "How can you leave when you won an election?".

The elections, result announcement, Trump's loss and the eventual January 6 attack on Capitol Hills mark a chaotic shift of power from the businessman to current President Joe Biden.

His insistence against vacating the White House is a new detail and as CNN puts it, "adds new detail to the chaotic post-election period".

In the early aftermath of the results, according to Haberman, who has been covering Trump since his win in 2016, the outgoing president appeared to acknowledge that he had lost to Biden. He even consoled one aide by stating, "We did our best."

However, something caused his mood to shift, and he abruptly told staff members he had no plans to leave the White House for Biden to move in.

The elections, result announcement, Trump's loss and the eventual January 6 attack on Capitol Hills mark a chaotic shift of power from the businessman to current President Joe Biden. He even consoled one aide by stating, "We did our best." However, something caused his mood to shift, and he abruptly told staff members he had no plans to leave the White House for Biden to move in. The state government in its statement announced that Vedanta would set up two units: a chip-related production unit with an investment of 600 billion rupees ($7.58 billion) and a display manufacturing facility in which it will invest 945 billion rupees ($11.95 billion).

According to the statement, Vedanta and Foxconn will collaborate closely with the state government to create high-tech clusters with the necessary infrastructure, such as land, semiconductor-grade water, and power.

The crisis in China's property sector is going from bad to worse. As per reports, in the country, a demolition campaign is gaining speed.

As the world's second-largest economy struggles under the weight of a faltering real estate market, indebted Chinese developers have been forced into a crisis. After massive quantities of debt-fueled construction, China now has enormous, uninhabited "ghost cities," and when builders run out of money, demolitions happen.

According to a report in the Telegraph, analysts have warned Beijing has adopted a "build, pause, demolish, repeat" policy as Chinese officials try to limit supply to prevent a drop in property prices and increase economic activity through additional construction.

In an effort to revive the slumping real estate market, the Chinese government is reportedly demolishing tower blocks and halting work on structures that could accommodate 75 million people or more than the entire UK population.

The Chinese property research institute Bic Research Institute (BRI) has issued a warning in its most recent study, noting that China has no scarcity of homes, sitting unoccupied, and that "such high vacancy is risky."

“A large potential supply is represented by vacant homes. When predictions for the housing market turn negative, a significant number of vacant homes will be put on the market, which could add to downward pressure on home prices," it added.

'Build, pause, demolish, repeat': China to demolish buildings that could accommodate 75 million people

Here's what's special about Queen Elizabeth II's 'royal' coffin

Slavery is a scourge in human history, where people were held by someone else or treated as their property without the privileges of a "free person". Surely this menace doesn't exist in the modern world, does it? According to the United Nations, it does and it is called "modern slavery".

The UN's International Labour Organization (ILO) announced Monday that 50 million people worldwide are subject to forced labour or forced marriage, and warned that the number of these people has substantially increased in recent years.

AFP reports that as per the new report, despite the United Nations' 2030 deadline to end all forms of modern slavery, the number of individuals subjected to forced labour or forced marriage increased by 10 million between 2016 and 2021.

The most recent statistics show that in 2021, there were 27.6 million people who were forced into forced labour, more than 3.3 million of whom are children, and 22 million who were forced into forced marriage. That means that almost one in every 150 individuals worldwide is a victim of modern-day slavery.

One in five people who are compelled to work are children, and the survey stated that more than half of them are engaged in commercial sexual exploitation.

The most vulnerable groups are by far women and children as per the report. It also issued a warning that this is a persistent issue because estimates show that forced labour can last for years and forced marriage is frequently "a life sentence."

According to the ILO, migrant workers were more than three times more likely to experience forced labour than domestic workers, with more than half of all cases occurring in upper-middle-income or high-income nations.

In the lead-up to the FIFA soccer World Cup, which begins in November, Qatar was mentioned in the report. The nation is under fire for allegedly violating labour laws in relation to migrants working there.

"Nothing can justify the persistence of this fundamental abuse of human rights," said Guy Ryder, head of the International Labour Organization (ILO).

It's 21st century and yet 50 million people across the world are still bound in 'modern slavery': UN

Experts have warned that the UK's recession-threatened economy, which saw a rebound in July, may take a hit from the public holiday marking Queen Elizabeth II's funeral next week.

Following a 0.6 per cent drop in June, the nation's gross domestic product (GDP) saw an expansion of 0.2 per cent, reports AFP citing a statement by the Office for National Statistics.

Experts have attributed the June dip to a public holiday for Queen's platinum jubilee, which marked her 70 years on the throne. Now another public holiday is scheduled next week for her funeral.

"The feeble 0.2-percent bounce back in July was driven by weak GDP in June due in part to the loss of working days from the Jubilee long weekend," notes KPMG UK chief economist Yael Selfin.

He also expressed concern that the GDP in July remained below May levels, as per him this points to "overall contraction over the first two months of summer."

"Looking ahead, the extra public holiday for the queen's funeral on September 19 has the potential to be more damaging for the economy than the extra day off for the Jubilee in June," said Samuel Tombs, chief UK economist at Pantheon Macroeconomics.

There is typically only one public holiday in Britain during the summer, but for the Jubilee celebrations, the holiday was doubled, and now the day off for the funeral means that millions of Britons get two extra public holidays.

Economic experts fear Queen Elizabeth II's funeral will further damage the UK's economy

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) stated on Wednesday that it was unable to guarantee the "peaceful" nature of the Iranian nuclear programme, claiming that there had been "no progress" in resolving concerns about the alleged past presence of nuclear material at unreported sites.

Citing a report that was seen by it, AFP reports that the UN's nuclear watchdog said it was "not in a position to provide assurance that Iran's nuclear programme is exclusively peaceful".

The report also said that the agency's director Rafael Grossi was "increasingly concerned that Iran has not engaged with the Agency on the outstanding safeguards issues during this reporting period and, therefore, that there has been no progress towards resolving them".

This comes as the United States pushes for answers on the three undeclared nuclear sites. The IAEA too has been pressing Iran for answers, however, Tehran insists that the atomic agency conclude its probe in order to revive the 2015 deal.

In a separate report released on Wednesday, the IAEA examined Iran's June decision to turn off 27 cameras that allowed the agency's inspectors to keep an eye on the nation's nuclear activity.

The agency's ability to guarantee the peaceful nature of Iran's nuclear programme has been negatively impacted by the removal of the cameras, the report noted.

The newest reports come as negotiations to revive the 2015 nuclear agreement remain in a stalemate after some headway was made last month.

Another recent IAEA report as reported by Reuters pointed out that Iran's stock of uranium has been enriched to up to 60 per cent, much higher than the 3.67 per cent purity it was allowed under the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) agreement, and much closer to the roughly 90 per cent that is weapons-grade.

There, it's been said premenstrual mood swings and anxiety are "key public health issue(s) globally".

Premenstrual symptoms are reported by more than 64 per cent of women globally during each menstrual cycle, reports IANS quoting a recent study.

28.61 per cent of women reported that premenstrual symptoms interfered with their daily activities every time they had a period, and another 34.84 per cent claimed that this happened sometimes.

Food cravings (85.28 per cent), mood changes or anxiety (64.18 per cent), and weariness (57.3 per cent) were the most frequently reported symptoms.

Jennifer L. Payne, director of the Reproductive Psychiatry Research Programme at the University of Virginia School of Medicine and one of the study's authors, said "our demonstrates that premenstrual mood symptoms are incredibly common worldwide."

"More importantly," she noted, "a majority of women reported that their premenstrual symptoms interfered with their everyday life at least some of the time."

Jacob Zuma, a former president of South Africa and one of those accused of corruption in a multi-million dollar arms deal that stretches back to 1999, has sued a journalist and the state prosecutor who is leading the case against him.

On Tuesday, Zuma launched a private prosecution against senior state prosecutor Billy Downer for leaking a medical report to a News24 journalist who then went on to publish it. The journalist Karyn Maughan has also been roped in the case.

As per a News24 report, the "charges relate to News24's publication of details of Zuma's medical condition, which were attached to court papers lodged at the KwaZulu-Natal High Court in Pietermaritzburg, last year."

Zuma contends that senior advocate Downer leaked the report to Maughan and this is in violation of the National Prosecuting Act. His lawyers had earlier contented that Downer is biased and had sought to have him removed from Zuma's case.

As per an Anadolu Agency report, the former leader's attorneys are suing the journalist who broke the news, arguing that it is illegal to reveal Zuma's private medical information without first obtaining written consent from the National Director of Public Prosecutions (NDPP).

The medical documents as per News24 were "part of court documents that had already been filed, making it public record."

The medical report was published following the former president's release on medical parole last year after being detained and imprisoned for contempt of court.

Several accusations of corruption, money laundering, tax evasion, and racketeering have been brought against Zuma, 80, and the French arms company Thales in relation to the $2.5 billion weapons contract from the late 1990s. Both the accused have denied any wrongdoing.

A new study by Lancet has found that India severely overuses antibiotics and a huge part of the formulations that the country's private sector uses aren't even approved by the Central drug regulator.

The private sector's use contributes to about 85-90 per cent of the total antibiotic use in India and more than 47 per cent of the formulations used in 2019 are not approved by the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO), says the study published in The Lancet Regional Health-Southeast Asia as reported by PTI.

According to the study, cefixime 200 mg tablets (6.5 per cent) and azithromycin 500 mg tablets (7.5 per cent) were the two most popular antibiotic formulations in India during the year.

"Largely unrestricted over-the-counter sales of most antibiotics, manufacturing and marketing of many FDC and overlap in regulatory powers between national and state-level agencies complicate antibiotics availability, sales, and consumption in the country," said the authors of the study.

The over-the-counter sale of antibiotics is also giving rise to complications like antibiotic resistance.

India is overmedicating on unapproved drugs, getting antibiotic resistant: Lancet study

Secrets and unknown species abound in the waters of Earth's oceans. Among these mysterious species is one worm detected by scientists in 2020. Its iridescent colours reminded the discoverers so much of the king of rock'n'roll that they nicknamed it the "Elvis worm".

The sparkling Peinaleopolynoe were discovered 4,000 metres or 13,000 feet underwater in some of the Pacific ocean's deepest hydrothermal vents.

Because of their shimmering scales, which are reminiscent of the sequined jumpsuits worn by Elvis Presley, they have been referred to as "Elvis worms" for years.

Their name Peinaleopolynoe is derived from the Greek word peinaléos, which means hungry or famished. According to the Guardian, the hungry scale-worms got their name because the first time they were seen, they were gathered around a pile of food that researchers had left on the deep-sea floor as something of an experiment.

COVID infection that lasts for a prolonged duration, even if it is minor, may have dire consequences for patients and may increase the risk of heart attacks, brain strokes and even dementia, experts have warned.

This comes as growing cases of long Covid are being reported globally. According to a recent study, occurrences of neurological diseases and heart-related problems have increased by 60 per cent in patients with Covid.

What is Long Covid?

Patients with this particular type of Covid infection continue to have symptoms for an extended period of time—more than the typical 14–15 days.

What did the experts say?

Dr Ashok Seth, Chairman of Fortis Escorts Heart Institute, told ANI that there is a significant amount of data from the west that shows that heart attacks and strokes increased by 60 per cent over the course of a year in hundreds of thousands of patients studied.

"So we are very clear COVID, even though mild, may affect people for a longer duration up to a year and create increased incidents of heart attacks and strokes."

According to Dr Padma Srivastava, professor and senior neurologist at AIIMS in Delhi, COVID has developed over time to affect the brain and the nervous system in addition to the lungs.

"We also now know that there is a definitive entity called long Covid which means there are features which are coming up, persisting after Covid infection in three months. There is extensive research which is going on, all over the world," she said talking to ANI.

How can it affect us?

As per Dr Srivastava when it comes to Covid, there are several factors at play, including infection, inflammation, involvement of the brain, nervous system, muscles, and peripheral central nervous system.

A new constitutional amendment that will curb the powers of Sri Lankan president is expected to be enacted into law within a couple of weeks.

Talking to reporters, the nation's foreign minister Ali Sabry on Monday said, "The new amendment will reduce presidential powers and bring back participatory governance."

To strengthen governance, the proposed 22nd amendment to the Sri Lanka constitution would set up a constitutional council and nine independent commissions, reports Reuters. The commission's objectives include advancing human rights, strengthening anti-corruption investigations, and enhancing audit control of government entities.

The bill was introduced a couple of months back as a means to support stability in Sri Lanka and quell the unrest ignited by the nation's greatest financial crisis in decades.

It will need a two-thirds majority in the 225-member parliament to become a law.

Once enacted into law, the revisions would restore the 2015 democratic reforms the former president Gotabaya Rajapaksa undid after winning the 2019 election.

Sri Lanka in the recent past saw its worst financial crisis that soon triggered violence on the streets. The unrest saw the previous president fleeing the country after his official residence was overtaken by a mob.

As per Reuters, the finance minister also announced that Sri Lanka is also in the midst of crafting a new anti-terrorism law that will be in accordance with international best practices.

This comes as a United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) session starts next week. Ahead of the session, Sabry also stated that Sri Lanka would oppose any foreign effort to compile evidence of alleged rights violations during the nation's campaign against the Tamil Tiger insurgents.

Sri Lanka's 22nd constitutional amendment which limits president powers to become a law soon

Former Pakistan PM, Imran Khan has landed himself visibly in more trouble and critique following a statement that he made during a political rally on Sunday.

Khan was addressing a rally in Faisalabad where he said the government is stalling elections to bring the army chief of choice, adding that only a free and fair election can ensure political stability in Pakistan and the government is running away from doing so because they want to "install an army chief of their choice in November", he also said that the current Pakistani dispensation wants to do so because if a "patriotic Army Chief is appointed, he would ask them about their ill-gotten wealth".

The comments have seen sharp critique on Imran Khan and his choice of words, including that from Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Defence Minister Khawaja Asif, Chief Justice of the Islamabad High Court and the military itself.

Pakistan's Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif while taking to Twitter said that Khan's comments were "despicable utterances to malign institutions are touching new levels every day", adding, "He is now indulging in direct mud-slinging & poisonous allegations against Armed Forces & its leadership. His nefarious agenda is clearly to disrupt & undermine Pakistan."

Pakistan's defence Minister Khawaja Mohammad Asif while addressing a press conference in Islamabad said that Imran Khan has become a threat to the country’s security, "Imran Khan made wrong statement about the army chief at the rally. Many army chiefs were appointed in Pakistan. The sanctity of some institutions is for Pakistan’s security, Imran Khan should not play with the country for its own interests".

The Islamabad High Court Chief Justice, Justice Athar Minallah while hearing a petition regarding the censoring of Imran Khan's speeches, censured Imran Khan over his COAS appointment remarks asking Imran Khan's consul to do some self-accountability.

In a very strongly worded statement, the Pakistani military's PR wing stated that "Pakistan Army is aghast at the defamatory and uncalled for statement about the senior leadership of Pakistan Army by Chairman PTI during a political rally at Faisalabad. Regrettably, an attempt has been made to discredit and undermine senior leadership of Pakistan Army".

The military statement reiterated the laid out procedure for the appointment of the COAS while expressing displeasure over Khan's comments said that "Senior politicians trying to stir controversies on appointment of COAS of Pakistan Army, the procedure for which is well defined in the constitution, is most unfortunate and disappointing. Senior leadership of Army has decades long impeccable meritorious service to prove its patriotic and professional credentials beyond any doubt. Politicising the senior leadership of Pakistan Army and scandalising the process of selection of COAS is neither in the interest of the state of Pakistan nor of the institution."

Khan is yet to come out with a clarification, or rebuttal on his statement made, until the filing of this report.

Critique on Imran Khan following statement alleging that govt wants to bring an army chief of their choice

Ending weeks of political uncertainty, Kenyan Supreme Court on Monday upheld President-elect William Ruto's victory in the August 9 presidential elections.

Chief Justice Martha Koome said that it was a "unanimous decision".

"The petitions are hereby dismissed, as a consequence we declare the first respondent (Ruto) as president-elect."

According to AFP, the decision dealt challenger Raila Odinga, who claimed there had been election fraud, a blow.

Last month, Odinga petitioned Kenya's highest court, stating he had "enough evidence" to demonstrate that he had, in fact, won the election.

To determine whether any anomalies were significant enough to invalidate the election, as was the case with the presidential election in August 2017 that Odinga also contested, judges have spent the last two weeks poring over boxes of evidence.

The court rejected Odinga's 72-page petition's claim that hackers hacked into the IEBC systems and uploaded tampered result forms.

Independent and Electoral Boundaries Commission's (IEBC) technology, according to Koome, satisfies the criteria for "integrity, verifiability, security, and transparency."

She dismissed all of the petitioners' assertions, adding that any anomalies "irregularities were not of such magnitude as to affect the final results of the presidential election."

Although the polling day went off without incident, the results triggered heated demonstrations in Odinga strongholds, and there are worries that the conflict could incite bloodshed in a nation where post-election discontent has a history of escalating into violence.

However, both candidates had pledged to uphold the court's decision. On September 13, Ruto will be sworn in as Kenya's fifth president.

Since 2002, no Kenyan presidential election result has been undisputed. After the 2007 election, Kenya had its worst electoral violence, during which more than 1,100 people lost their lives in confrontations between opposing tribes.

Kenya: Political uncertainty ends, Supreme Court upholds William Ruto's presidential election win

Music transcends war, six months into the Russian invasion Kyiv dances on

Every year, the Natural History Museum's Wildlife Photographer of the Year (WPY) competition produces stunning images for the world, but among this year's best images is one that might be masking dark, sinister undertones.

The picture titled 'The bonobo and the mongoose' was clicked by Christian Ziegler in the rainforests of the Democratic Republic of Congo.

At first glance, it seems as though this is a moving scene between the two animals, in which one animal is taking care of another. However, according to experts, it's more likely that the bonobo took the young mongoose cub after slaughtering its mother.

On the Natural History Museum (NHM) website, the image carries the following text: "Bonobos are mainly herbivorous but occasionally they hunt. The mongoose pup – eventually released unharmed – may have been taken when its mother was killed."

According to the BBC, the Bonobo may have intended to eat the baby mongoose.

In a conversation with the BBC, a behavioural ecologist and evolutionary anthropologist Dr Barbara Fruth said that sometimes when Bonobos catch large prey, and the meal is too big, the ape does not immediately kill all its victims. Instead, they keep some of their prey alive as pets. Usually, these prey are eaten later.

Dr Fruth, who is the head of the LuiKotale Bonobo Project, and has been researching these animals for more than 20 years, thinks that this is most likely what was happening when the image was taken.

The tiny mongoose pup from the picture did eventually escape the grim fate and get its freedom.

Describing the scene, the photographer said: "The bonobo held and stroked the little mongoose for more than an hour," adding that the ape, carried "the pup carefully as it climbed a tree to eat fruit."

Heartwarming moment or something ominous? Truth behind this award winning picture will shock you

A new report has shone the light on the stark difference between cardiovascular diseases or heart diseases in men and women.

The American Heart Association (AHA) has released research warning that crucial indicators that a woman has or may develop heart disease in the future are frequently overlooked because they are more subtly displayed than in men.

Even though there is no proof that women develop heart disease later than men, according to the study, women are frequently diagnosed with it later in life than men, which suggests that when treatment begins they are likely in poorer shape and at a more advanced stage.

Daily Mail notes that earlier reports have also alleged that women's medical complaints are frequently not given the same attention as men's, which is a problem that could have dire consequences.

Even though heart disease is the biggest cause of death for women in America, only one-fifth of primary care doctors and 42 per cent of cardiologists believe they can accurately assess a woman's heart health, according to a survey.

The failure of medical professionals to recognise heart attacks in women resulted in a higher mortality rate for women than for males, according to a 2018 British study.

While women are often more concerned about breast cancer, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says that they are just as likely as men to die from heart ailments.

In contrast to other, more widely publicised risks like breast cancer, the CDC warns that almost 20 per cent of American women will pass away from heart failure.
