Andrew Tate and his brother Tristan, as per reports, will be moved to house arrest on Friday evening. The shift comes as a Romanian court overturned the prosecutor's request to extend Tate's police custody till late April. Talking to Reuters, Tate's lawyer Eugen Constantin Vidineac disclosed that "the judges from the appeal court in Bucharest admitted our appeal and rejected the proposal of the prosecutors to extend the warrant and changed the measure to home arrest for all the defendants."

The two brothers — Andrew Tate, 36, and Tristan Tate, 34 — were arrested in late December and have been held in pre-trial detention since then.

Brazil President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva will meet with his Chinese counterpart President Xi Jinping on April 14 in Beijing. As per Lula's office, he will leave for China on April 11. Reuters reports that the leader intends to stick to his original agenda, including the signing of around 20 agreements with China, which is Brazil's largest trading partner. The visit was postponed last week after the Brazilian president was diagnosed with mild pneumonia.

The visit comes months after Lula took over the office from his predecessor Jair Bolsonaro, and two months after he met US President Joe Biden. Despite growing tensions between the two, Brasilia is reportedly aiming for a pragmatic foreign policy balancing ties with its two top trading partners US and China.

With this trip, Lula, as per Reuters, is attempting to upgrade Brazil's relations with China and is seeking new Chinese investment.

Turkey on Thursday became the last NATO member to ratify Finland's membership of the US-led defence alliance. With this, Finland is well on its way to becoming the North Atlantic Treaty Organization's (NATO) 31st member nation. "This evening, we are keeping the promises we made to Finland," announced ruling party lawmaker Akif Cagatay Kilic moments before the vote in which Turkish lawmakers unanimously backed Finland's accession to the international organisation. The parliament's approval as per AFP comes two weeks after Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan publically gave his blessing to the Nordic country's bid.

The nation and its neighbour Sweden, following Russia's launch of a 'special military operation' against Ukraine, decided last May to end their decades of non-alignment and join the multi-member bloc.

Their applications were accepted at the alliance summit last June, but the bids still needed to be ratified by all the member nation's parliaments.

According to AFP, the process was stalled due to Hungary and Turkey. The Hungarian Parliament ratified Finland's membership on Monday (March 27).

Finland and Sweden, who applied for membership together, had to break up their bids to avoid delay to both their bids. Owing to long-standing disputes, Turkish President Erdogan had reportedly put up stiff resistance to Sweden's candidacy. However, the nation still hopes to join the military alliance in time for the Vilnius summit scheduled for July.

Minnesota Democratic Representative Ilhan Omar is in trouble again. The congresswoman, as per Fox News, embroiled in an ethics complaint. The politician has been accused of alleged abuse of government resources. As per the report, the Foundation for Accountability and Civic Trust (FACT) has filed a complaint with the House Office of Congressional Ethics. The organisation is calling for an immediate investigation into whether Omar violated house rules and abused official resources for political use from her TikTok account.

The complaint as per Fox News revolves around the congresswoman's use of Chinese-owned TikTok, which has recently come under the scanner for its alleged spying activities.

Following concern over TikTok's alleged nefarious activities, FBI director Christopher Wray had claimed that the Chinese government could use TikTok for "data operations". Subsequently, the short video format application's use was banned by the House of Representatives on official devices.

However, as per the complaint, "in spite of this, Rep. Omar has a TikTok account that she is clearly using for both official House and political purposes."

The watchdog in its complaint writes "the biography portion of the account describes her as a 'Congresswoman for #MN05.' She has posted overtly political posts, including a video of her urging viewers to support Democrat candidates, a message to Democrats volunteering for campaigns, and several videos of her campaigning and attending campaign events."

Congress members are barred from using official resources for campaigning purposes, however as per the complaint along with the political content, Omar "also made posts that used official government resources, including C-SPAN footage from the House floor, what appears to be a cell phone video recorded on the House floor, and an interview from what appears to be her House office."

Another TikTok video allegedly has Omar recording inside "what appears to be her congressional office." This, as per FACT, is in violation of the prohibition of filming in government offices for a campaign or political purposes and the ban on posting political videos on an official social media account.

The watchdog alleges that since Omar identifies the account as that of a Congresswoman and uses official government content, her account is technically an official social media account.

"These violations are disturbing, and clearly not how members are supposed to be using official resources," said Kendra Arnold, FACT's executive director, while speaking to Fox News Digital.

"The law is abundantly clear, and her account and the content posted speak for themselves. These rules are to protect the time, resources and integrity of official proceedings for those in elected office," she added.

US congresswoman Ilhan Omar accused of alleged abuse of govt resources for using TikTok

TikTok's possible ban in the United States was blocked by US Republican Senator Rand Paul on Wednesday. Senator Paul, as per Reuters, blocked the bid to fast-track the Chinese-owned social media app's ban, citing concerns about free speech. He warned that people should "beware" of entities that "use fear to coax Americans to relinquish our liberties" and said that a ban on the app will imitate "Chinese speech bans." Asking if the US is "going to be just like China", Paul alleged that such a bill would give the US president "limitless authority" to ban speech.

"If Republicans want to continuously lose elections for a generation they should pass this bill to ban TikTok — a social media app used by 150 million people, primarily young Americans," said Paul on the Senate floor.

The US on Tuesday said it will stop exchanging with Russia some data on its nuclear forces. The move is a response to Moscow suspending its participation in the New START nuclear arms treaty. In retaliation to Russia pulling back from New START treaty, US decides to withhold nuclear data

We have all dreamed of having bosses who will join us and work alongside us, but alas, not everyone is that lucky. However, the new Starbucks boss, Laxman Narasimhan, will do just that. According to a letter he sent to the coffee chain employees, Narasimhan will be trying his hand at being a barista and will work at Starbucks stores half a day every month. As part of his training before taking over as CEO of Starbucks, he reportedly underwent a six months "immersive" training experience where he also learnt how to be a barista.

"I have learned so much about the retail experience from working in our stores."

US President Joe Biden on Monday used his veto power for the first time and overrode a Republican-led bill that, as per AFP, would have barred retirement fund asset managers from taking into account environmental, social and governance (ESG) factors. Popular video-sharing platform TikTok is reportedly considering separation from parent company ByteDance. As per Bloomberg, the reason behind this probable split stems from concerns voiced by the United States over the app and the alleged national security risks it poses.

Citing people familiar with the matter, the publication reports that a "divestiture" is considered a last resort and will only be pursued if the company's existing proposal with US national security officials is not approved. A divestiture can lead to a sale or an initial public offering (IPO).

Controversial trial in Indonesia leaves school students trudging like ‘zombies’, parents fume

A Californian appeals court has ruled that "gig" economy firms like Uber and Lyft can continue to treat their state-based drivers as independent contractors. This verdict comes in a case regarding a labour measure known as Proposition 22. Labour groups have for long opposed the measure; they claim that it robs them of sick leave and other rights. The appeals court, however, found the measure largely constitutional. This decision overturns an earlier decision by a lower court. The 2021 verdict said that Proposition 22 affected lawmakers' powers to set standards at the workplace.

A three-judge panel on Monday ruled that the measure was legal and California-based workers at Uber, Lyft and other similar firms can continue to be treated as independent contractors.

The judges, however, removed a clause that put restrictions on collective bargaining by the independent contractors.

"We're pleased that the court respected the will of the people and that Prop 22 will remain in place, preserving independence for drivers," he added.

China premier Li Qiang says achieving 5% growth target 'no easy task'

Li Qiang, the former Shanghai Communist Party chief on Saturday, took over the nation’s number two post and assumed office as the country's premier. The 63-old-year-old Li faces the daunting task of reviving China’s economy, which has over the past three years been battered by COVID-19 curbs. He was appointed to the seven-member CCP Politburo Standing Committee — China’s highest echelon of power — at the Communist Party's 20th Congress last October. With his latest appointment, China Premier Li Qiang now ranks second in leadership after President Xi Jinping.

Here’s all you need to know about China’s second most powerful man:

Who is Li Qiang?

Qiang, as per Reuters, is a career bureaucrat who from 2017 to 2022 served as the Chinese Communist Party’s (CCP) secretary of the nation’s most populous city, Shanghai.

He joined the CCP in 1983 and since then has served in many capacities.

Qiang started his career as the secretary of the Communist Youth League of Rui'an, Zhejiang. He then went on to serve in the provincial department of civil affairs, following which he became the party secretary of Yong Kang, Wenzhou, the Political Legal Affairs Secretary of Zhejiang and later the deputy party secretary of the province.

Also read | Xi Jinping appoints longtime ally and confidant Li Qiang as China’s new premier

In 2012, he became the governor of Zhejiang. He then became the party secretary of Jiangsu province and was then finally transferred to the position of party secretary of Shanghai in 2017. The same year, he was elevated and was made a member of the CCP Politburo.

Why was he appointed as China’s premier?

Chinese President Xi Jinping, following his groundbreaking appointment as the third time head of China, is appointing a slate of his loyalists in key governmental posts. This has been termed China’s biggest government reshuffle in a decade. As a generation of more reform-minded officials retire, Xi as per Reuters, is further consolidating power after being unanimously elected president.

Li Qiang is a close ally of Xi, and he even served as Xi’s chief of staff between 2004 and 2007; back when the current President was the provincial party secretary of Zhejiang province.

What do experts say about Li Qiang’s rise to power?

Due to Qiang’s handling of Shanghai’s two-month lockdown last spring, in which residents struggled to access food and medical care, his ascension had as per AFP earlier seemed in doubt.

Richard McGregor, a senior fellow at the Lowy Institute in Sydney, says, "if proof were needed that loyalty trumps meritocracy in Xi's China, Li Qiang's elevation provides it."

"Li might be quite capable, and may make a good premier, but it is hard to see how he got there other than through Xi's personal favour," he added.

Also read | Explained: Xi Jinping's rule in China extended. A look at his political career so far

Neil Thomas, senior China analyst at Eurasia Group says that while "(Li) was seen as a business-friendly local leader but it's questionable whether these skills will translate well to overseeing macroeconomic coordination and regulatory agendas as premier.”

Some even see Li’s loyalty to Xi as an impediment to making his mark in solving the problems China faces. They say that his appointment may serve as a way for President Xi to assert his own economic agenda.

According to Steve Tsang, director of the SOAS China Institute, despite being the president's "trusted lieutenant", the new premier's ability to push through policies is still limited.

"Xi will give Li Qiang more scope to run the State Council, but on the basis that Li Qiang will do what Xi wants and not go beyond the perimeter set by Xi," he remarked.

What is expected of Li Qiang's premiership?

In his current capacity as premier and the head of China’s cabinet, the State Council, in his capacity as premier and head of China's cabinet Li Qiang will be responsible for the day-to-day running of the country, as well as its macroeconomic policy.

His ascension comes at a time when China’s economy is in serious trouble. Last year it grew by just three per cent. Owing to this, the ongoing annual session of the Chinese parliament has set a modest growth target of five per cent for 2023. This is the lowest goal set by China in nearly three decades.

As per Christopher Beddor, the deputy China research director at Gavekal Dragonomics, for Li, the top task this year will be beating the five per cent target without triggering serious inflation or piling on debt.

"The leadership has already accepted two years of exceptionally weak economic growth in the name of COVID containment. Now that containment is gone, they won’t accept another," added Beddor.

What is the current state of China’s economy?

For the first time in 25 years of its survey, the American Chamber of Commerce in China found that China is no longer seen as a "top three investment priority". The results were based on a survey of companies, the majority of which said this.

In recent years, some of Beijing’s most successful private firms like Alibaba have been battered by abrupt crackdowns and regulatory hurdles.

Even as China tries to present a business-friendly face, in the face of global headwinds and weak confidence among consumers and the private sector, Li will have to work hard to restore confidence.

Watch | Xi Jinping handed unprecedented third term as China’s president Here’s all you need to know about China’s second most powerful man: Who is Li Qiang? Also read | Xi Jinping appoints longtime ally and confidant Li Qiang as China’s new premier In 2012, he became the governor of Zhejiang. Richard McGregor, a senior fellow at the Lowy Institute in Sydney, says, "if proof were needed that loyalty trumps meritocracy in Xi's China, Li Qiang's elevation provides it." "Li might be quite capable, and may make a good premier, but it is hard to see how he got there other than through Xi's personal favour," he added. Also read | Explained: Xi Jinping's rule in China extended. A look at his political career so far Neil Thomas, senior China analyst at Eurasia Group says that while "(Li) was seen as a business-friendly local leader but it's questionable whether these skills will translate well to overseeing macroeconomic coordination and regulatory agendas as premier.” Some even see Li’s loyalty to Xi as an impediment to making his mark in solving the problems China faces. Also read | Leader for life: Xi Jinping secures historic third term as China’s president As per Christopher Beddor, the deputy China research director at Gavekal Dragonomics, for Li, the top task this year will be beating the five per cent target without triggering serious inflation or piling on debt. Xi Jinping calls for fortification of armed forces into 'Great Wall of Steel'

Canada's last captive killer whale, dubbed "the loneliest whale in the world" has died. Kiska, the 47-year-old Orca whale, as per local media reports, died on Thursday (March 9) of bacterial infection. The lonely mammal spent the last four decades of her life in captivity, with more than 12 of those (since 2011) in isolation. Kiska was a resident of Marineland, a zoo and amusement park in Niagara Falls.

Kiska, the 'world's loneliest whale', was captured in 1979 from Icelandic waters along with Keiko the whale, who went on to star in the movie 'Free Willy'. She spent her earlier captive life in various marine parks before ending up in the Canadian amusement park.

China's third-term President Xi Jinping on Saturday, during the ongoing annual meeting of China's parliament, appointed his close ally and confidant Li Qiang to the post of premier. The role, as per Reuters, is charged with managing the nation's economy. 63-year-old Li Qiang is a close ally of the ‘supreme leader’ Xi Jinping and even served as his chief of staff between 2004 and 2007.

Li Qiang, the former Communist Party chief of Shanghai, replaces Li Keqiang. The former premier served two five-year terms.

Widely perceived to be pragmatic and business-friendly, the new premier faces the daunting task of shoring up China's uneven economic recovery. With weak confidence among consumers and the private sector, and global headwinds, the nation's economy is weighted down after three years of COVID-19 curbs.

February saw deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon and the fragile Cerrado savanna hit record highs. As per the latest figures released by the Brazilian government on Friday, last month 322 square kilometres (or 124 square miles) of forest cover were destroyed in Brazil's share of the world's biggest rainforest. This is 62 per cent higher that the previous record established in February 2022. The data based on the national space agency's DETER surveillance programme shows the extent of challenges faced by President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva in his quest to reverse surging environmental destruction.

In Cerrado, satellite data showed 558 square kilometres of destruction. This is up 99 per cent from February 2022 and nearly double the February 2020 record of 283 square kilometres.

‘First of its kind’: Texas man sues ex-wife’s friends for supplying abortion pills; seeks $1mn in damages

The UK government will unveil a highly anticipated yet controversial bill on Tuesday aimed at stopping illegal migrant crossings across the English Channel. It would ban those making the perilous journey using small boats from claiming asylum in the country and will deport them swiftly. If passed, the draft law will also prevent those deported from re-entering the UK and ever claiming British citizenship. The home secretary will have the duty to carry out these deportations, according to reports. The proposed legislation has been heavily criticised by rights groups who claim it is unworkable and unfairly targets refugees. Ministers from PM Rishi Sunak's government, however, claim it is necessary.

Tackling the migrant issue was one of five key priorities outlined by Prime Minister Rishi Sunak in January. His party, which as per Reuters is languishing in polls, is under severe pressure to handle the issue and the PM is even facing pressure from within his party to come up with an appropriate solution.

AFP reports that the new law comes days before a summit with French President Emmanuel Macron. The Friday summit reportedly has cooperation to "stop the boats" high on its agenda.

"(It) will ensure that people arriving in the UK illegally are detained and promptly returned to their home country or a safe third country," said an interior ministry spokesperson, while stressing the need for the law and the "vital" role France plays to curb crossings.

Reportedly, the British government has claimed that its latest attempt at putting a stop to the illegal crossings will not breach Britain's obligations under the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR).

Migrants will only be deported to "safe third countries" it said. However, these countries are yet to be specified.

The plan follows an equally contentious law which was unveiled last year. The Nationality and Borders Act, among other things, allowed the government to deport asylum seekers to Rwanda. No flights for it have yet taken place thanks to the repeated appeals against the worrisome law.

Global progress on women's rights is "won over decades (is) vanishing before our eyes" said United Nations chief Antonio Guterres on Monday. He warned that gender equality remains a distant goal. Speaking during a speech ahead of International Women's Day on March 8, he said, "Gender equality is growing more distant. On the current track, UN Women puts it 300 years away."

Ticking off a litany of abuses like maternal mortality, child marriage, girls being denied education and more, that women face, he said that "women's rights are being abused, threatened, and violated around the world."

Mentioning the dire conditions in Afghanistan, he remarked, "women and girls have been erased from public life."

While he did not name other countries, Guterres stressed that "in many places, women's sexual and reproductive rights are being rolled back (and) in some countries, girls going to school risk kidnapping and assault."

"The patriarchy is fighting back. But so are we," remarked Guterres, adding "the United Nations stands with women and girls everywhere."
