Pakistan Interior Ministry on Wednesday decided not to renew the passport of former Prime Minister and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) supremo Nawaz Sharif who is currently residing in London.

The interior ministry stated this in response to a query by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs made on February 19 regarding the "request for issuance of new diplomatic passport by the former Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif", reported Dawn.

Sharif`s passport had expired in February of this year. Interior Minister Sheikh Rashid Ahmed had already announced in January that the PML-N supremo`s passport would not be renewed as per instructions from Prime Minister Imran Khan.

The letter by the Ministry of Interior to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs turned down the request and stated that the renewal of Nawaz Sharif`s passport would not be processed by the relevant authorities.

The interior ministry stated that in order to return to Pakistan, Nawaz Sharif may apply for an Emergency Travel Document (ETD) from the Pakistan High Commission in the UK, and "the same may be issued once he produces prior bookings of travel to Pakistan through PIA (Pakistan International Airlines) only.

"The Ministry also said that Nawaz was declared a proclaimed offender by the Islamabad High Court (IHC) in a criminal appeal titled "Mian Nawaz Vs NAB", as well as Toshakhana Reference by an accountability court in Islamabad and declared absconder in reference in case of Mir Shakeelur Rehman by an accountability court in Lahore, reported Dawn.

"He being a fugitive of the law and absconder cannot seek any further relief unless he surrenders before the courts in Pakistan," the letter said.

IHC had granted eight-week bail to Nawaz Sharif on October 29, 2019, and had allowed him to travel abroad for four weeks for medical treatment on November 16, 2019 order.

As per the court directives, the duration could be extended based on medical reports. Meanwhile, Interior Ministry had asked for more information related to Nawaz`s health, reported Dawn.

Nawaz Sharif has been vocal about the misgovernance of PM Imran Khan and has held many virtual summits of the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) criticising the incumbent government and had garnered the support of a large audience in Pakistan.

Nawaz Sharif says PM Imran Khan, senior military officials will be responsible if 'anything' happens to daughter

Pakistan's deposed prime minister Nawaz Sharif's daughter Maryam Nawaz said on Monday that she will not leave the country to join her father in London for her treatment despite the Imran Khan government's apparent offer to go abroad.

"Even if someone (from the government) comes to my home and offers me to go abroad, I will decline it straight away," she said while talking to reporters at her Jati Umra Raiwind residence here.

"I know some ministers are saying that if Maryam is allowed to go abroad the opposition's movement (against the government) will fizzle out. But let me make it clear that I will not leave my country come what may, and will not seek the removal of my name from the no-fly list," she said.

The PML-N vice president further said that she had to undergo a 'little surgery' which is not possible in Pakistan. "But despite this, I will not leave Pakistan. I will live and die in my country," she asserted.

Pakistan Interior Minister Sheikh Rashid Ahmed has said that the PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif's passport will be cancelled on February 16.

Sharif has been living in London since November 2019 after he was allowed to leave the country for medical treatment.

Adviser to the Prime Minister on Accountability and Interior Mirza Shahzad Akbar said that United Kingdom authorities had been asked to deport the convicted former prime minister from their country.

He said Pakistan had written a letter to the UK to cancel the visa of Sharif which was issued for medical treatment after taking an undertaking.

Prime Minister Imran Khan in October said he would contact British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, if needed, to discuss his deportation and his adviser Akbar wrote a letter to British Home Secretary Priti Patel on October 5 urging her to deport the former premier whom he said is responsible for pillaging the state.

Maryam has alleged that the "selectors" (a reference to the army chief Gen Bajwa and others) are being questioned within the institution regarding imposing inept and incompetent Imran Khan on the nation.

"Now voices are being raised within the institution for imposing this incompetent Imran on the nation who made the lives of the people miserable," she said and lamented "inhuman statement" of Sheikh Rashid regarding use of water cannon on protesting government employees.

Rashid had said that the government had tested water cannon on the employees. "Tomorrow, this government will say that it is using the atomic bomb on the masses to test it," Maryam said.

Pakistan Interior Minister Sheikh Rasheed Ahmed on Wednesday announced that PML-N supremo and former prime minister Nawaz Sharif's passport will be cancelled on February 16.

Nawaz Sharif has been living in London since November last year after he was permitted to leave the nation for clinical treatment.

Recently, the PML-N supremo has been declared proclaimed offender by the Islamabad High Court after he failed to appear before the court.

For Nawaz's situation, the public authority of Pakistan is planning to convince UK specialists to achieve a "constrained evacuation", at times called "regulatory expulsion" — a situation in which the Home Office upholds a person's expulsion from the UK on the off chance that they don't have leave to remain for example in the event that their application has been declined or if their leave to remain has terminated, Dawn announced.

While the Nawaz case is outstanding in that it includes a significant political character, it has gone to the UK Home Office when it is enduring an onslaught at home for being an asylum for outside nationals blamed for defilement.

The Pakistan People's Party and the Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz are two of the biggest political parties in Pakistan. For decades, they have taken turns sitting on the throne of Islamabad and every time they failed to do so, the two parties joined hands.

We saw this in 2006 when Benazir Bhutto and Nawaz Sharif — two former Prime Ministers of Pakistan came together to overthrow General Parvez Musharraf. Now, years later, we are seeing it again as Bilawal Bhutto Zardari and Maryam Nawaz Sharif — the heirs of Benazir Bhutto and Nawaz Sharif — have come together to overthrow the government of Imran Khan Niazi.

Their coming together has infused new energy in their cadre. Their anti-govt rallies are being attended by thousands of Pakistan locals and their bonhomie is making headlines.

The political pundits of Pakistan are seeing this growing camaraderie as a new chapter in their country's politics. However, the real question is if this assumption is correct.

In 2006, Nawaz Sharif and Benazir Bhutto came together in London to sign a charter of democracy. They promised to struggle against what they called a dictatorship and they too promised to do away with the politics of hatred and polarisation.

Then, on December 27, 2007, Benazir Bhutto got assassinated after a suicided attack at one of her rallies claimed Bhutto's life. It plunged Pakistan into turmoil less than two weeks before the election.

Nawaz Sharif's party joined a coalition with Bhutto's party under its new leader and Benazir's husband, Asif Ali Zardari, but the alliance was strained by differences and the coalition collapsed. The PPP and PML-N parted ways.

Five years later, in 2013, Pakistan went to elections once again. Nawaz Sharif, who once couldn't stop singing praises of the Pakistan People's Party, now left no opportunity to attack the party.

"Since they did nothing for the country, and their performances are zero, so they don't have anything to tell the people, they don't have anything to sell to the people of Pakistan, because they didn't do anything in the five years so people don't expect them to do anything in the next five years," he had said.

It's been seven years and the next elections in Pakistan are still a couple of years away, but Nawaz Sharif, who is currently in exile, is laying the groundwork. He has managed to build a coalition of at least 11 political parties against Imran Khan.

His daughter, Maryam Nawaz, and Benazir's son, Bilawal Bhutto, have taken the centre stage. They have united against a common enemy — the PTI government led by Imran Khan. Whether or not the unity will work this time will soon be made clear. Till then, it's a game of 'wait and watch'.

History repeats itself: Will Bilawal Bhutto and Maryam Nawaz join hands again?

Pakistan has started the legal process to reach an extradition treaty with Britain that would pave the way for the UK to hand over former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.

Pakistan starts legal process for former PM Nawaz Sharif’s extradition

Pakistan has started the legal process to reach an extradition treaty with Britain that would pave the way for the UK to hand over former prime minister Nawaz Sharif.

The development comes after a top Pakistani court earlier this month declared Sharif a fugitive from justice for failing to return home to face additional corruption charges.

Sharif was sentenced to seven years in prison in a separate case, for corruption and money laundering in 2018. He has been living in self-imposed exile in London.

Pakistan currently has no extradition treaty with Britain. The process hence is assumed to take years and could face stiff resistance in parliament.

Sharif's Pakistan Muslim League party is currently holding nationwide rallies demanding Prime Minister Imran Khan step down by the end of the month over alleged bad governance and failing to improve the country's economy.

Khan refuses to resign, and the opposition has vowed to walk out of parliament and provincial assemblies in 2021 to force early mid-term elections.

Pakistan's Supreme Court ousted Sharif from office over corruption allegations in 2017. Authorities in November 2019 temporarily released him on bail amid deteriorating health so that he could travel and seek medical treatment abroad.

At the time, another court permitted Sharif to leave the country for four weeks, with the option to extend the time abroad if he was not able to travel afterward. His bail later expired and authorities subsequently issued arrest warrants for him.

Also, in 2018, Sharif was sentenced to seven years in prison for a separate case of corruption and money laundering.

From 'go Nawaz' to 'go Niazi', Pakistan has come a long way. For months the country has been rocked by anti-government protests. On Sunday, December 13, these protests came to a temporary halt.

The Pakistan Democratic Movement held its final rally for this year in the city of Lahore. This does not mean the anti-government movement has subsided. The opposition is planning to organise what it calls another 'tsunami of protests' in Islamabad by February 2021 — bigger than the power-show they put up in Lahore yesterday.

Thousands of Pakistani citizens converged at Minar-e-Pakistan and chanted slogans against Imran Khan Niazi and demanded his resignation. There were fiery speeches by opposition leaders such as Bilawal Bhutto, the Chairman of Pakistan People's Party (PPP), Maulana Fazlur Rahman, the President Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam and Maryam Nawaz, the Vice-President of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz.

Their grudges against the Pakistani government varied but their message was the same: 'Imran Khan will have to go.

"Imran khan, you will have to leave the government because you destroyed industry, you destroyed the business of the people, you destroyed the institutions, you raised the price for your class. You have to go now because you destroyed the national economy," said Nawaz.

Voicing the same opinion, Maulana Fazlur Rahman said, "We will eliminate the role of the establishment and the intelligence agency from politics and introduce the concept of independent accountability."

Nawaz Sharif, the former Prime Minister of Pakistan, was also present virtually in the rally. Streaming in from London, he lashed out at the Pak army for its increasing involvement in the country's political matters and accused them of installing a puppet in the highest office of the country.

Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) vice president Maryam Nawaz on Thursday approached an Islamabad accountability court against the seizure of her father Nawaz Sharif's property in the Toshakhana reference.

Maryam filed an application in the court on behalf of her father, and after an initial hearing, Judge Syed Asghar Ali issued notices to the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) and others to submit their response to the application by December 16, reported ARY News.

Sharif's seized house in Murree is registered in the name of his late wife Begum Kulsoom Nawaz, the application stated, adding it was purchased before the date mentioned in the reference.

According to ARY News, the house was divided among the family members after her death and a court had already given a verdict regarding the division, the application said.

Maryam pleaded with the court to set aside the order regarding the seizure of the house.

On June 11, a non-bailable arrest warrant for Nawaz was issued by an accountability court in the Toshakhana reference.

According to the accountability bureau, Zardari and Sharif obtained cars from the Toshakana by paying 15 per cent of the cars' price.

The bureau further alleged that former Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani facilitated former President Asif Ali Zardari and Nawaz in this regard.

Zardari had paid only 15 per cent of the total cost of the cars through fake accounts, according to NAB. He also received the cars as a gift from Libya and the UAE when he was president and used them for his personal use instead of depositing them in the treasury, the anti-graft body had alleged.

The Toshakhana (gift depository) gift from any country to the head of the state remains the property of the government unless sold at an open auction. Rules allow officials to retain gifts with a market value of less than Rs 10,000 without paying anything.

'State above a state': Sharif regrets that no Pak PM able to complete full term ever

A Pakistani court on Wednesday declared Nawaz Sharif a proclaimed offender after the former premier failed to appear before it despite repeated summons served in connection with two corruption cases.

The two-member bench of the Islamabad High Court (IHC) comprising Justice Aamer Farooq and Justice Mohsin Akhtar Kayani heard the case about Sharif's appeals against convictions in the Al-Azizia and Avenfield cases.

The court said that notices would also be issued to the sureties of Sharif to show the cause for their failure to produce him as per the orders of the court.

The court was informed by officials of the Foreign Office and Interior Ministry that Sharif was duly informed about the summons of the court both in London, where he was living, and his residence in Lahore.

After failing to appear despite clear orders by the court, the bench decided to declare Sharif a proclaimed offender.

Sharif, 70, has been in London since November last year after the Lahore High Court granted him permission to go abroad for four weeks for treating a heart ailment and an immune system disorder.

In October, the court had ordered Sharif to appear before it by November 24 to avoid being declared a proclaimed offender after he allegedly refused to receive non-bailable arrest warrants at his residence in London.

His appeals in the two cases came up for hearing in the IHC which ordered that he should first appear before any proceedings in the appeals.

When he failed to appear, the court issued non-bailable arrest warrants against Sharif on September 15. Later, the court ordered to publish advertisements in London-based newspapers for him to appear by November 24.

Earlier, Sharif was convicted in the two cases in 2018 but subsequently got bail before going to London. Sharif was sentenced in absentia to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment by an anti-graft court in one of the three corruption cases against him in the Panama Papers scandal in July 2018.

Sharif resigned as Pakistan prime minister in 2017 after the Supreme Court disqualified him from holding public office and ruled that graft cases be filed against the beleaguered leader and his children over the Panama Papers scandal.

The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) had registered three cases of corruption and money laundering against Sharif, his family members, and former Finance Minister Ishaq Dar in the Islamabad Accountability Court.

Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) has slammed the ruling government for delivering a harsh treatment to party president Shehbaz Sharif by continuing to transport him from jail to courts despite the National Assembly Opposition leader suffering from chronic backache.

"We condemn the shifting of Shehbaz Sharif to [General] hospital [for his CT Scan there] in an armoured car instead of being provided a better vehicle, keeping in view his chronic backache problem," said party spokesperson Marriyum Aurangzeb in a statement here on Monday.

Alleging that Prime Minister Imran Khan was doing politics on the health of the opposition leader, she said Khan could only tease Sharif as the Prime Minister took pride in persecuting the opposition while his party Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) was failing to run the country.

She further alleged that the Gilgit-Baltistan election was stolen by incarcerating Sharif. Meanwhile, Dawn reported that PML-N Punjab information Secretary Azma Bukhari stated that the prosperous Punjab of Shehbaz Sharif was now at the mercy of "wheat and sugar mafias" as the government was engaged in "persecution" of the former chief minister and his son Hamza Shehbaz.

She also alleged that the Punjab cabinet meeting held on Monday discussed ways and means to further distress the Sharifs through tactics like forcing the Anti-Corruption Establishment to act against the opposition.

The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) on Sunday registered cases against Sharif and his two sons among others in the multibillion rupee sugar scam, under money laundering, fraud, and other charges.

Last year, Sharif and his son Hamza were indicted in connection with the Ramzan Sugar Mills case.

NAB had then alleged that Sharif misused his post as the former Punjab chief minister to build a bridge amounting to rupees five hundred million to facilitate the Ramzan mills.

Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) supremo Nawaz Sharif on Tuesday termed the report of an inquiry carried out by the army regarding the arrest of his son-in-law retired Captain Safdar Awan as a "cover-up", saying that the report was "rejected".

"Inquiry report on the Karachi incident is a cover-up scapegoating juniors and shielding the real culprits. Report "Rejected"," the ousted premier tweeted, reported Dawn.

No other PML-N leader has commented on the party's official stance on the report, although Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) spokesperson Mian Iftikhar Hussain termed the inquiry as "a victory of the democratic forces."

"Now those responsible should be brought to justice. PDM will hold further consultations in this regard," he added.

Meanwhile, Pakistan Peoples' Party (PPP) chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari had also welcomed the development as "good news", reported Dawn.

While addressing a public meeting in Gulmit, Gilgit-Baltistan, Bilawal said: "I have received good news that the chief of army staff [ordered] an inquiry, that inquiry has been completed and action has also been taken. We should welcome this step."

The Pakistan Army on Tuesday said that it has found officials of secret intel agency, ISI, and Rangers guilty of the "abduction" of Sindh IGP Mushtaq Mehr and the "overzealous" arrest of Capt Awan in a desecration case, adding that they have been removed from their posts.

In a statement, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) -- the military media affairs wing -- said that the court of inquiry constituted to redress the grievances of the Sindh inspector general on the orders of Chief of Army Staff General Qamar Javed Bajwa, has been completed.

Last month, the ISPR said the Army chief had taken notice of and ordered an immediate inquiry into the "Karachi incident", minutes after PPP Chairperson Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari called on General Bajwa and ISI Director General Faiz Hameed to investigate the circumstances surrounding the arrest of Awam, husband of PML-N leader Maryam Nawaz, from his hotel room on October 19.

Almost all police officers in Sindh applied for leave in protest against the humiliation meted out to IGP Mehr.

PML-N spokesman Muhammad Zubair, who is also a former Sindh governor, said that the IGP Sindh was "kidnapped" by the Rangers who forced him to file an FIR for Safdar's arrest.

Pakistan army inquiry into Safdar Awan's arrest a 'cover-up', says PML-N chief Nawaz Sharif

Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan on Saturday lashed out at three-time former premier Nawaz Sharif, describing him as a "jackal" who is trying to create "rebellion" in the Army by accusing it of involvement in the country's politics and calling for a change in the military as well as the ISI leadership.

Sharif, the 70-year-old supreme leader of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) who was ousted from power in 2017 by the apex court on graft charges, had last month for the first time directly named Army chief Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa and ISI head Lt Gen Faiz Hameed for interfering in the general elections of 2018 to ensure victory of Khan.

Sharif had made the comments virtually on October 16 during a joint rally organised by the Opposition parties under the banner of Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM), formed to oust the Khan-led Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI) government.

Prime Minister Khan said that Sharif is sitting in London "like a Jackal" and targeting the Army.

Hitting out at Sharif, Khan said the former prime minister was ?trying to stir up a rebellion in the Pakistan Army by alleging it is involved in politics and calling for changing the Army and ISI chiefs," Khan said while addressing a public gathering in Mingora in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) province.

The powerful army, which has ruled Pakistan for more than half of its 70 plus years of existence, has hitherto wielded considerable power in the matters of security and foreign policy.

However, the Army has denied meddling in the country's politics. Prime Minister Khan also denies that the Army helped him win the election in 2018.

Khan said that Sharif had run away from the country under the pretext of illness, adding that he was a "money worshipper" and had amassed his wealth by looting the country, the Dawn newspaper reported.

The PML-N chief, currently out on bail, is facing multiple corruption charges. The Islamabad High Court had allowed him to go to London for medical treatment in November last year for a period of eight weeks for medical treatment. But he did not come back, while his lawyers told the court that he was still recovering.

Khan also slammed Sharif's daughter Maryam Nawaz for openly accusing the Army of interfering in politics.

She is taking advantage of being a woman because women are given respect in Pakistan, he said.

"Nawaz Sharif and his sons cannot dare attack the Pakistan Army in the country and this is why they have fled abroad. Since Maryam Nawaz knows that we will not send her behind bars because she is a woman, she has started spewing venom against the Army," he said.

Khan said Pakistanis would never allow corrupt politicians to hurl allegations against the Army.

Rebuking the "corrupt political leaders who have gathered under the Pakistan Democratic Movement", Khan said a group of thieves and looters have gathered who were asking for special concessions after looting the country.

"Two major political parties looted the country during the past 30 years but now it is a decisive time to take action against the corrupt and looters," he claimed.

Nawaz Sharif sharpens attack on Army, ISI chief; Maryam says 'sun is about to set'

Former Pakistan prime minister Nawaz Sharif has pinned responsibility on "certain generals" in the army for dragging the country into Kargil war with India and highlighted how the country's soldiers were left without food and weapons during the clash.

Nawaz Sharif, who was the prime minister during the 1999 India Pakistan war said, "People who were responsible for the deaths of hundreds of our soldiers in Kargil. It was a call by few generals. We were thrown into war. It was painful for me to learn when our soldier at peaks, let alone food, didn't have weapons. Lives were sacrificed. But what did the country or community achieve?"

The almost three-month long war ended with a decisive Indian victory and Indian forces were able to clear Kargil sector of the then state of Jammu and Kashmir -- that the Pakistani forces had attempted to occupy.

He said, "The forces behind Kargil were the same forces who, to save face on October 12, 1999 plotted coup in the country and martial law was declared. Pervez Musharraf and his cohort used the army for personal gains."

Sharif was speaking at a PDM rally in Quetta, Balochistan. This is the third such rally of PDM -- earlier being in Gujranwala and Karachi.

He also took on Pakistani Army Chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa and DG of Pakistan's Spy agency ISI General Faiz Hameed -- a subject taboo in the country with no politician touching it.

Sharif said, "General Bajwa stole the mandate of 2018 Pakistani elections. He made Imran Niazi as Pakistan prime minister which goes against the mandate."

This is the second time Sharif has publically taken the name of country's powerful army chief, and has spoken about his involvement in Pakistani politics.

Pak did not achieve anything from Kargil war, Nawaz Sharif says

Pakistan's anti-corruption body has slapped a fresh corruption case on deposed prime minister Nawaz Sharif, compounding the legal woes of the embattled Opposition leader who has frequently attacked the powerful military as well as the government.

Sharif, the 70-year-old supremo of the Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz) who was ousted from power in 2017 by the Supreme Court on corruption charges, is currently in London for medical treatment.

The National Accountability Bureau also approved cases against Sharif's ex-personal secretary Fawad Hasan Fawad, former federal minister Ahsan Iqbal, former foreign secretary Aizaz Chaudhry and former Intelligence Bureau (IB) chief Aftab Sultan, Dawn newspaper reported.

On Thursday, a total of 11 cases were approved at NAB's Executive Board Meeting (EBM) presided over by its chairman, retired Justice Javed Iqbal.

According to the National Accountability Bureau, a fresh case was approved against Sharif along with Chaudhry, Sultan, and Fawad for ''illegally purchasing 73 high-security vehicles for the security of foreign dignitaries.''

They are accused of favouritism and illegal use of vehicles, causing a loss of over Rs 1,952 million to the national exchequer.

The EBM also approved a case against Ahsan Iqbal and Mohammad Ahmed, contractor/owner of private firm Ahmed and Sons, for increasing the scope of the Sports City project in Narowal from Rs 30 million to Rs 3 billion by ''abusing the authority.''

They are accused of illegally providing the funds of the federal government to provincial government projects after the 18th Amendment by using personal influence, which inflicted huge losses on the national exchequer.

The case against Iqbal was approved two days after he had said in a private TV talk show that the NAB had been investigating the Narowal Sports City case against him for the last two-and-a-half years but did not file a reference.

Sharif is already facing several cases of corruption and misuse of authority which he has declared as a result of political vendetta by the current government led by Prime Minister Khan.

The approval of fresh cases followed a recent speech by Prime Minister Khan that the Opposition would see a ''different Imran Khan'', which was interpreted as a threat to arrest more opposition leaders and court cases.

Apart from Sharif and his close aides, the NAB approved cases worth billions of rupees of alleged corruption against several officials and businessmen for causing losses to the country in different projects.

Sharif criticised the military establishment in recent speeches at gatherings of the opposition Pakistan Democratic Movement.

Days before the July 2018 general elections, Sharif was convicted in the Avenfield properties case and sentenced to 10 years in prison. His daughter Maryam was sentenced to seven years in prison for abetment and his son-in-law Captain (retd) Mohammad Safdar to one year.

In December 2018, anti-corruption court judge Arshad Malik convicted Sharif in Al-Azizia Steel Mills case and sentenced him to seven years in prison. Judge Malik was later dismissed from service over misconduct.

Safdar and his wife, PML-N Vice President Maryam Nawaz, were in the city to attend a rally of the opposition's Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) when he was arrested from their hotel for allegedly disrespecting the mausoleum of the country's founder Mohammad Ali Jinnah. He was subsequently released on bail.

Bilawal in a press conference told reporters that all top officers of Sindh Police were wondering "who were the people who surrounded" the Sindh police chief's house in the early hours of Monday and took him to an unspecified location before Safdar was arrested.

He also demanded to know the identities of "the two people who went inside the IG's house" and where they allegedly took the police chief at around 4 am.

Bilawal's presser came after the PPP which hosted the PDM's rally found itself in an embarrassing position when police moved in late night on Sunday and arrested Safdar.

Safdar was released on bail on Monday and flew back to Lahore with Maryam and other senior PML N leaders, but the PPP which rules the Sindh province while distancing itself from the incident wondered who had ordered the arrest of Safdar.

Meanwhile, at least 13 top ranking officers of the Sindh Police have decided to go on leave to protest the manner in which the force had been "ridiculed" in the incident involving the arrest of Safdar.

The senior officers have said they want to go on earned leave "to come out of the shock of the unfortunate incident."

"The recent episode of registration of FIR against Capt (R) Safdar in which police high command has not only been ridiculed and mishandled, but all ranks of Sindh police have been demoralised and shocked.

Safdar was arrested a day after he raised slogans at Jinnah's mausoleum just before the second rally of the Pakistan Democratic Movement's (PDM) - an alliance of 11 opposition parties.
On Tuesday, Maryam was booked along with over 2,000 party members for holding an anti-government rally in Lahore where she called Prime Minister Imran Khan a "coward, selected and puppet" who hides behind the Army.

The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf government appears to be panicked as it has been registering a number of cases against the PML-N workers since the PDM launched its movement to oust the Imran Khan government.

Pak Army chief orders inquiry into 'incident' involving arrest of Sharif's son-in-law

Barely 2 years of Imran Khan rule and his 'Naya Pakistan' wants a new leader. After Gujranwala, anti-govt protests have now reached Karachi. The show of strength is unlike anything the Pak PM could have ever imagined. WION's Palki Sharma gets you the story.

Gravitas: 'Naya Pakistan' wants a new leader

Security for former Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, who is currently in London, has been heightened, a development that came weeks after the PML-N supremo`s fiery speech against the incumbent Imran Khan-led government and his criticism of the military establishments alleged interference in political matters.

In a report on Saturday, Dawn news said that four local bodyguards were reported to have reached Hasan Nawaz`s office at Stanhope House, from where the former premier addressed the Pakistan Democratic Movement`s (PDM) rally in Gujranwala on Friday via a video link.

It was the first rally held by the PDM, an alliance comprising 11 of the country`s opposition parties, since its formation last month to oust the incumbent government over its "failures in all sectors".

Throughout the day, the privately hired guards were stationed close to the office, the report said.

Back at the former leader`s residence at Avenfield, privately hired guards with vehicles bearing the sign "dog security unit" were seen during the day.

Two guards with sniffer dogs were stationed on Dunraven Street, where Avenfield House is situated. The same guards earlier stood outside the gate of their residence with the bodyguards.

On Friday afternoon, PTI activists led by Sahibzada Jahangir, the spokesperson for Prime Minister Imran Khan on trade and investment in the UK and Europe, gathered outside Stanhope Place carrying anti-PML-N posters and shouting slogans against Sharif.

Jahangir told Dawn news that he approached the office premises to protest against Sharif with "200 people" in accordance with the UK government`s Covid-19 protocols.
