Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif hinted that the general elections might be held in November after saying that he will hand over the charge to the caretaker set-up next month before the completion of the assembly’s tenure.

“Next month our government will complete its tenure, [but] we will leave before the completion of our tenure and an interim government will come in,” the prime minister said while speaking at the Government College Women’s University in Sialkot on Sunday, reported Dawn.

The five-year term of the incumbent parliament, the National Assembly, will end on August 12 at midnight.

According to Pakistani election laws, general elections should take place within 60 days if the elected house completes its constitutional tenure of five years.

If the National Assembly is dissolved prematurely, then elections are held within 90 days of the dissolution.

A few days ago, the prime minister had said that his government would complete its tenure which is ending on August 13.

According to reports, Shehbaz decided to end his tenure early on the advice of his ally Pakistan People's Party (PPP) leader Asif Ali Zardari.

''Zardari in a meeting with PM Shehbaz on Saturday asked him to dissolve the National Assembly a couple of days before the government completes its tenure so that elections can be held in November,'' a senior PPP leader told PTI on Sunday.

The five-year term of the National Assembly began when Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief Imran Khan was elected as the prime minister on August 12, 2018.

After his ouster due to a no-confidence motion passed in the parliament, a coalition of parties under the leadership of Shehbaz took over.

Pak ex-PM Nawaz Sharif may contest elections this year, says law minister Azam Nazeer Tarar

Pakistan's cash-strapped economy got much-needed relief from the international monetary fund after it was able to clinch a 3 billion dollar package to avoid a potential default. But whether Pakistan will be able to emerge unscathed from the economic turmoil will completely depend on how stable its political system remains in the coming months.

Political stability key for cash-strapped Pakistan

Pakistan’s national assembly recently passed a bill which would limit the lifetime disqualification of lawmakers to five years. The bill, in question, was signed into law, on Tuesday (June 27), said a report by AFP, citing a state spokesman, and could pave the way for exiled former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s return.

What is the bill about?

The Elections (Amendment) Bill 2023, was passed by the Pakistan national assembly on Sunday and limits how long lawmakers can be disqualified from office. Additionally, it also allows the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to announce the dates of the elections unilaterally without having to consult the president.

The legislation had already passed the Pakistan Senate on June 16. It was also previously reported that with Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf-backed (PTI) President Arif Alvi out of the country on the hajj pilgrimage and Chairman Senate Sadiq Sanjrani taking charge as the acting president, the bill would be passed soon.

About Nawaz Sharif’s exile

The 73-year-old former Pakistan PM was disqualified for life back in 2017 by the country’s Supreme Court and was later convicted in corruption cases by the accountability courts. Sharif had served three times as the prime minister before being ousted over allegations he was later convicted of and sentenced to seven years in jail.

In 2019, Sharif was granted medical bail and flew to the United Kingdom where he has remained ever since. Meanwhile, in Pakistan, his family-run Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) party’s win, last year, made his brother Shehbaz Sharif the prime minister.

The country is set to hold general elections later this year. However, aside from the lifetime disqualification, Nawaz is yet to receive verdicts on two anti-corruption cases against him and would have to get the charges against him overturned to compete in the upcoming elections.

Bill signed into law: Report

A report by the news agency AFP, citing a government spokesman, said that the senate chairman in the absence of incumbent president Alvi and as the acting president signed the bill into law, on Monday.

“The ruling PML-N and its coalition partners want to bring Nawaz Sharif back,” political analyst Hasan Askari told AFP, adding that they have passed the bill to “achieve this objective”.

“Nawaz Sharif will be the main campaigner for PML-N in the next election,” said Askari.

While Nawaz’s return would be “very helpful” for the party “politically”, it is not clear he himself would contest in the elections, said the political analyst to the news agency.

Pakistan passes new law, paves way for former PM Nawaz Sharif’s return: Report

Pakistan has introduced a bill to limit the disqualification of lawmakers. This move could pave the way for Nawaz Sharif's return to Pakistan. Molly Gambhir tells you how.

Gravitas: Pak govt goes all out to bring Nawaz Sharif back

Senior leaders of the two ruling coalition parties in Pakistan— PML-N and PPP—are reportedly holding a meeting in Dubai to chalk out a political strategy on key issues, including the dissolution of the national assembly and setting the date for the upcoming general elections.

Express Tribune, quoting sources, reported that PML-N supremo and ex-prime minister Nawaz Sharif, his daughter and party’s senior vice president Maryam Nawaz, PPP co-chairperson Asif Ali Zardari, and his son Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari are currently in the city for the talks.

While Nawaz landed in Dubai on Saturday, Zardari arrived on Sunday.

It was further reported that some other powerful leaders are expected to attend the Dubai huddle, but nothing has been confirmed so far.

The venue for the high-level meeting was carefully chosen to be Dubai in order to avoid media scrutiny, the newspaper reported quoting sources from the ruling coalition.

Speaking to the newspaper, a senior PPP leader ruled out the possibility of a coincidence of these political bigwigs being present in the city and added that a meeting was likely to take place between the leadership of both parties.

“Well, you can’t rule out anything; these are politicians and present in the same city so a meeting between them won’t be a surprise,” the PPP leader replied to a query.

Set the ball rolling

The PPP leader confirmed that talks would centre around the dissolution of the assembly, the formation of a caretaker set-up and setting the date for the upcoming general elections.

The present five-year term of the National Assembly is reaching its end, and the country is expected to go to polls by the end of this year.

Giving a timeline, the PPP leader further said the dissolution of assemblies might take place a week before the government’s tenure ends.

The party leader added that the ruling parties recently discussed this matter so that they could have more time for their election campaigns.

“You will hear about these things in July; possibly soon after Eid,” he said.

Nawaz to return to Pakistan?

Additionally, speculations are rife that Nawaz Sharif, brother of incumbent PM Shehbaz Sharif, might join politics again and participate in this year's general elections, news agency PTI reported.

Pakistan’s ruling coalition parties converge in Dubai for talks on upcoming general elections: Report

Pakistan’s National Assembly on Sunday passed a bill to limit the lifetime disqualification of lawmakers to five years, possibly paving the way for the return of former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif from London to resume active politics ahead of general elections this year. Sharif, 73, was disqualified for life in 2017 by the Supreme Court and later convicted in corruption cases by the accountability courts. In 2018, the three-time former premier became ineligible to hold public office for life after a Supreme Court verdict in the Panama Papers case.

Pakistan National Assembly passes bill to limit disqualification period of lawmakers

A Pakistani accountability court has acquitted former prime minister Nawaz Sharif in a 37-year-old case alleging that he transferred a "precious state land" here in the capital of Punjab province to one of the country's leading media barons as a "bribe".

Saturday's ruling came days after the federal government led by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, the younger brother of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) supremo Nawaz Sharif, made crucial amendments to laws to lift the life-long ban on politicians.

The 73-year-old three-time former prime minister's acquittal may allow him to contest and lead PML-N in the next general election scheduled later this year.

Nawaz Sharif was disqualified in 2017 by the Supreme Court. In 2018, he became ineligible to hold public office for life after a Supreme Court verdict in the Panama Papers case.

"An Accountability Court in Lahore acquitted three-time premier Nawaz Sharif in a case related to illegal transfer of 54-kanal (6.75 acres) precious state land to Jang/Geo media group owner Mir Shakil-ur-Rehman in Lahore while he was the chief minister of Punjab 37 years ago," a court official told PTI.

"Judge Rao Abdul Jabbar acquitted him after the country's anti-graft body (National Accountability Bureau) informed the court that after recent amendments to its law (by the Shehbaz Sharif-led coalition government), the case does not fall in its preview," the official said.

The former prime minister's lawyer contended that NAB had malicious intentions while filing the case against his client, who had no involvement in plot allotment.

He said the acquittal of the principal accused proved that no offence was committed.

Therefore, he argued that keeping the proceedings pending against any other accused, including a proclaimed offender, after the acquittal of the prime accused was of no use.

The judge admitted the arguments of the counsel and acquitted Nawaz Sharif in the case.

NAB's earlier charge sheet accused Nawaz Sharif, who was also the chairman of Lahore Development (LDA) in 1986, of misusing his authority and rendering undue benefit to Rehman by approving the exemption of 54 precious plots measuring one kanal each in a single block (compact form) situated at canal bank H- Block of M A Jauhar Town, Lahore.

NAB alleged the accused caused a loss of Rs 143 million to the national exchequer through the allotment of the land.
Nawaz Sharif, the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) supreme leader, has been living in self-exile in the United Kingdom since November 2019.

Shehbaz Sharif calls on Nawaz Sharif to become Pakistan PM again, lead election campaign

Amid the multiple crisis from politics to economy, Pakistan has brought into force a new law that could dig up old buried issues. The new law essentially clips the wings of the Pakistani Supreme Court and paves the way for the current political establishment to have a bigger say and get its way as well.

Pakistan government paves the way for Ex-PM Nawaz Sharif's return

Imran Khan accused the Pakistan government of planning his arrest, calling it part of a “London plan” to finish all cases against former prime minister Nawaz Sharif. In his latest video message, ex-Pakistan PM Khan said: “This is part of the London plan and an agreement has been signed there to put Imran in jail, make the PTI fall and finish all cases against Nawaz Sharif.”

'London plan': Imran Khan accuses Sharif of plotting his arrest

After a self-imposed exile since 2019, former Pakistan prime minister Nawaz Sharif is looking at a possible return to his homeland. Sharif will travel back to chair Pakistan Muslim League.

Nawaz Sharif's Europe visit: A personal affair?

It is not immediately clear if the five-nation tour of Pakistan holds any political significance for the immediate fate of Islamabad's power corridors and the current political climate of the country. However, in past, Pakistani Prime Ministers when either ousted or under exile, have used foreign-nation trips to galvanise support to legitimise their political interests back home. Most notably, during the period between 1984-1987 and early 2000s, the former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto used the platforms abroad to hit against country's military dicators, all the while attempting to legitimise her 'political movement' in Pakistan.

Nuclear weapons without any cohesion," said Biden, as quoted in a White House press release of his remarks at the Democratic party event. Reportedly miffed by the statement, Islamabad on Saturday evening summoned the US ambassador and issued a demarche. Maryam Sharif reunites with her father, former Pak PM Nawaz Sharif, after three years

In a big legal victory for the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) party, its vice president Maryam Nawaz was on Thursday acquitted by a high court in a corruption case which will allow her to contest elections. The Islamabad High Court (IHC) accepted the appeal of Maryam, daughter of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, and that of her husband Muhammad Safdar who had challenged their convictions by an anti-corruption court in the Avenfield property case in July 2018.

The Avenfield case refers to the purchase of four posh flats in Avenfield House, Park Lane in London. A two-judge bench comprising Justice Aamer Farooq and Justice Mohsin Akhtar Kayani hearing their appeals said the opinion of the investigating officer could not be considered as evidence.

The joint investigation team did not present any facts, it just collected information, Justice Kayani observed. At the conclusion of the case, the bench held that the National Accountability Bureau (NAB), the prosecutor in the case, failed to establish the charges of corruption.

The NAB had accused the Sharifs of purchasing the flats with money over and above their known sources of income. The Sharifs rejected the accusation of wrongdoing but were unable to show where the money for the flats had come from. The NAB in September had admitted before the IHC that the PML-N leader had no direct role in purchasing the Avenfield properties.

Thursday’s verdict has paved the way for Maryam, 48, to be eligible to contest elections. Lawyer Mirza Moiz Baig said: A person who has been convicted of a crime involving corruption or moral turpitude is disqualified from contesting elections unless a period of five years has lapsed since their release." Maryam in a brief chat with the media outside the court said they had been vindicated.

As she talked to the media, she also spoke to her father Nawaz Sharif in London and also received another call from her uncle Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, who congratulated her on her acquittal. The Prime Minister later in his reaction to the verdict said the edifice of lies, slander and character assassination had come crumbling down.

Maryam’s acquittal in the Avenfield reference is a slap in the face of the so-called accountability system that was employed to target the Sharif family. My congratulations to Maryam beti (daughter) and Safdar, he tweeted. “Maryam Nawaz and Nawaz Sharif’s connection to the assets beyond means has not been proven," remarked the court on Thursday.

“How do Wajid Zia’s statement and the material presented to prove the prosecution’s case?" the court inquired. Zia was the investigating officer who headed the joint investigation team (JIT) that probed the Panama gate, leading to the disqualification of Nawaz Sharif.

While Maryam and her husband were convicted along with the PML-N supremo, the elder Sharif was handed down 10 years in jail, his daughter sentenced to seven years in prison, and her husband was sentenced to one year in prison. They had filed appeals against their conviction before the IHC in the second week of August 2018 and the court had on September 18 the same year suspended their sentences and released them on bail.

The elder Sharif’s appeal is still pending as has been living in London and failed to appear before the court despite being given several opportunities. Overturning the conviction of his daughter, however, opens a window for him to come back and get his bail processed with the hope to get relief.

Pak PM Shehbaz Sharif’s leaked ‘clip’ of call requesting to facilitate ‘relative’ goes viral

Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has been accused of committing treason for consulting his elder brother and ex-PM ‘fugitive’ Nawaz Sharif in London for the appointment of the next Army Chief.

A resolution was passed by the Punjab state assembly in this regard, seeking action against the prime minister under Article 6 (treason) of Pakistan’s Constitution.

The resolution was introduced by Punjab Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Basharat Raja on Monday and it was passed with a majority vote against Sharif.

Punjab province is ruled by ousted ex-PM Imran Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party and its ally party Pakistan Muslim League (Q)—a centre-right party in Pakistan.

The resolution claims that the PM met “fugitive” Nawaz Sharif, a three-time prime minister of Pakistan, in London a couple of days ago on the appointment of the new army chief, which not only amounts to the prime minister’s oath preventing him from sharing sensitive matters with unrelated persons but also an insult to the institution of the army.

Shehbaz was in London to attend the state funeral of the late Queen Elizabeth II.

According to local media reports, he also met his brother Nawaz during his stay in the city and discussed the appointment of the next Army chief with him.

Pak’s Punjab assembly passes resolution to initiate treason charges against PM Shehbaz Sharif

Currently in London, UK to attend the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II, Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif met his brother and Pakistan Muslim League-N supremo, Nawaz Sharif. At the meeting, the duo agreed on holding the next general elections in the country at a stipulated time.

According to local media reports, the brothers, whilst talking about the next general elections, also agreed that the current coalition government will complete its constitutional term.

The Pakistan PM talking about the elections comes in the backdrop of former PM Imran Khan putting incessant pressure on the ruling government to hold the voting.

As reported by WION, in a public rally in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa's (K-P) Charsadda district last week, Imran called Sharif's government, an 'imported government' and urged it to allow the 'change' to come through votes.

“If you stop this ‘peaceful revolution’ then as World Bank has predicted the game [situation] would get out of everyone’s hand. Let the change come through vote,” said Imran.

“No matter what you do you cannot win this match you have already lost this match...economy is sinking fast and the world is not willing to give them [government] financial aid for flood victims.” he further added.

The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI) chief has repeatedly accused Sharif is delaying the elections so that he can appoint a 'patriotic' army chief that toes his line.

However, on Saturday, Defence Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif informed the media that PM Sharif will be appointing the new Chief of Army Staff (COAS) come November.
