England all-rounder Moeen Ali received a pleasant surprise earlier this month when he was picked for the first Ashes Test. Moeen, who did not play Test cricket for nearly two years, was named in the playing XI for the opening Test against Australia. But the comeback has not been quite a smooth one for him. He was fined 25 per cent of his match fees for breaching the International Cricket Council (ICC) code of conduct. The 36-year-old was handed a fine for using drying spray to his finger. It was understood that he had done this without seeking prior approval from the on-field umpires. It is now being learnt he is facing a serious finger injury threat in the ongoing Test. With seven wickets to pick on the final day of the encounter, Moeen’s injury is undoubtedly a deadly blow for the hosts. Australia spinner Nathan Lyon talked about the matter during the press conference yesterday.

What did Lyon say?

"It's massive, to be honest with you, I actually sitting here have a lot of sympathy for Moeen. Not coming off any red-ball cricket for two years and was thrown into bowling a lot of overs. The best way I can probably sum it up, and it will probably sound weird, is a singer losing their vocals but expecting to go out and put a concert on," Nathan Lyon said in the post-match presser. Expressing his sympathy for Moeen, the ace Aussie spinner explained why it is tough to grip the ball as finger spinners. But when asked to offer a piece advice to the English cricketer, Lyon said, "I don't have to tell you what I do in my hotel room. We'll leave it at that."

Moeen Ali’s performance

Moeen Ali claimed two wickets in the first innings. Conceding 147 runs in his 33 overs, Moeen picked up the wickets of Travis Head and Cameron Green. Moeen’s 33 overs appeared to be the joint-sixth-most he has ever bowled in one particular innings. In the second innings, he has not yet been able to claim a wicket after bowling seven overs. The Pat Cummins-led side will need 174 runs more to win the Edgbaston Test. Usman Khawaja and Scott Boland remained unbeaten at the end of the fourth day’s play.

Ashes 2023: Nathan Lyon talks about England all-rounder Moeen Ali's injury

The Bazall philosophy continued to enthrall fans in Edgbaston as Joe Root pulled off an aggressive start to England’s batting on the fourth day of the opening Ashes Test. After losing both openers in the first ten overs of their second innings, England were on the back foot when heavy showers forced the end of proceedings on Day 3. The early setback, however, seemingly had very little impact on Root. The English batter began Day 4 with an attempted reverse scoop off Australian pacer Scott Boland. He, however, failed to make contact as the ball found the clasp of England keeper Alex Carrey behind the stumps, going past the edge of Root’s bat. Underlining Root’s stunning approach, England Cricket tweeted, “First ball and Joe Root goes for the ramp shot.”

Comprising some glimpses of Root’s blistering show, England Cricket dropped a video on Twitter and wrote, “A ramp-bunctious start from Joe Root.”

Joe Root had already struck as many as five boundaries and one maximum when Nathan Lyon finally came to Australia’s rescue. Picking up a delivery on his off-stump, Root tried to smash it over the long-on. But the ball suddenly turned inside, leaving Alex Carry with a comfortable opportunity to complete the stumping. Ashes 2023: Joe Root goes for a ‘ramp shot’ on opening delivery of Day 4; fans in ‘awe’

Veteran England star Joe Root was seen in sensational form on Day 1 of the Edgbaston Test as he scored his 46th international ton against the Aussies in the first Ashes Test. In their first taste of the Bazball, the Aussies suffered despite a good start with the ball as England posted 393/8 before they declared and invited Pat Cummins’ men to play the final 30 minutes of the day. Despite the attacking form of play, England were unable to breach the defence of David Warner (8) and Usman Khawaja (4) as Australia ended the day at 14/0 at stumps.

Mix start for England

Day 1 started with a four from Zak Crawley as he cleared England’s ambitions which caught everyone by surprise. Crawley though did not get the required support at the other end as Ben Duckett was dismissed for 12 by Josh Hazlewood in the fourth over. Crawley would then put a 70-run stand for the second wicket with Ollie Pope which steered the innings in the right direction before the latter was dismissed for 31. Soon Crawley was scalped by Scott Boland on the final ball of the first session on 61.

Root runs the show

With England at 124/3 at the break, it was Joe Root who took the anchor role despite losing wickets consistently at the end. Harry Brook (32) and skipper Ben Stokes (1) soon followed which put the hosts on the back foot. Jonny Bairstow (78) would then join Root as they both stitched a 121-run stand for the sixth wicket.

Ashes 2023: Joe Root shines with ton in Australia's first Bazball glimpse; Lyon scalps four wickets

Australia’s Nathan Lyon produced a magical moment on Day 1 of the Edgbaston Test in Ashes 2023 as he produced an early freak moment of the series contender on Friday, June 16. England batter Harry Brook was left to rue a misjudged moment on Day 1 after being dismissed by Lyon. While Brook was not so pleased with the moment, the Aussies gained the upper hand in the contest in the post-lunch session as they dismissed half of the England team.

What happened with Brook?

In the second session on Day 1, on the second ball of the 38th over, Brook failed to judge the flight of the delivery which hit him and tried to leave. While he thought that the ball has passed to the wicketkeeper, the ball hit him and went on to hit the stumps. The freak delivery dislodged the bails and saw Brook get dismissed for 32. The dismissal paved the way for the Aussies as they came back in the contest when the Bazball was gaining control on Day 1.

At the time of writing on Day 1, England were 202/5 with Joe Root unbeaten on 50 and Jonny Bairstow on 12. England will be hoping to put a respectable total on board on Day 1 as they look to continue their impressive run.

For Lyon though, the series could be crucial as he tries to reach 500 Test wickets having started the Ashes on 487 scalps from 121 matches.

England look for redemption

Having lost the Ashes 0-4 Down Under in 2021-22, England will be out for redemption as they try to get the better of the Aussies. England have not won the Ashes since 2-15 and will to end their drought of the Ashes, where they also won the ODI and the T20 World Cup. They will have history on their side as the Ashes has not been won by a host nation for more than a decade.

The last time the Ashes was won by an away team was in 2011, while the last time Australia won the Ashes on English soil was in 2001. Currently, England are also enjoying a purple patch, having won 11 matches in their last 13 matches under the captaincy of Ben Stokes, who took over as the skipper in June 2022.

WATCH | Nathan Lyon scalps Harry Brook on a FREAK delivery to put Aussies in ascendency

Australian off-spinner Nathan Lyon is a force to reckon with all around the world and he's solely focused on winning the World Test Championship (WTC) Final against India after losing in the 2019 ODI WC semi-final against England.

"This is my World Cup final," Lyon said. "Being part of the 2019 [ODI] World Cup, where we weren't good enough against England in the semi-final, it did feel the World Cup dream probably slipped away," the offie added in a conversation with cricket news website ESPNCricinfo before embarking on a two-month long tour to the UK.

Lyon not only has been Australia's most prolific bowler but best of all in the current 2021-23 WTC cycle with 83 wickets in 19 games, 15 more than second-best James Anderson. The cycle will culminate with the commencement of the WTC Final between India and Australia on June 7 in England.

The spinner also has a chance to become the seventh bowler overall to have 500 Test wickets to his name. While Lyon isn't fazed by the record, he certainly acknowledges the nature of it.

"Yeah, I don't like talking about myself in that light, but it is pretty amazing when you sit back and look at the names who have been able to take 500 Test wickets . I know I've been very fortunate and I'm grateful for my journey so far. It has been amazing, and if I'm able to tick that little box over the Ashes, it would be very special," he said.

"If I start looking at what I've been able to achieve, the Tests and the series that we've won, I'll feel like the end can sneak up on you quite quickly. I still feel I've got a lot of cricket left in me and I know personally, I want to tick off some big goals in the many years to come. I'll definitely look back at it when I do call stumps, but that's not for a while yet," added Lyon further.

Also Read: Steve Smith concerned about Test cricket's future, wishes for its survival with one eye on WTC Final The spinner also has a chance to become the seventh bowler overall to have 500 Test wickets to his name. WATCH WION LIVE HERE You can now write for wionews.com and be a part of the community. WTC final against India is our grand finale ahead of Ashes 2023, says Australian spinner Nathan Lyon

Australian ace spinner Nathan Lyon feels the Oz have a plan in place to nullify the most-talked-about Bazball approach during the upcoming 2023 Ashes. England’s newest high-risk, result-oriented outlook saw them winning 10 out of the previous 12 Tests, including an away series win in Pakistan.

Lyon feels by not panicking, something that the other teams did, Australia can avoid getting outplayed by Ben Stokes-led side.

Speaking to Australian Associated Press (AAP), Lyon said the Aussies made a mistake by panicking in India, and the results are there for everyone to see. He added they will learn from their experience and upset England in their backyard.

"You look at the way they played against New Zealand, South Africa and Pakistan, they have been able to force the opposition into panicking," Lyon told AAP.

"We shouldn't panic anyway," Lyon said. "We panicked in India and we saw what happened. If we can learn from that experience and play our way and our brand it will be okay," the off-spinner added.

Lyon added Australia only needs to worry about them, what they are doing, and how they are doing instead of scratching their heads over England’s style of play, which has taken the world by storm.

"We just have to worry about us. Control what we can control and worry about what is in our backyard and not be worried about what they're doing,” Lyon said. "If we make sure we have really good plans and stick to them, everything will go okay."

Last year after Joe Root was removed as the Test skipper, Robert Key - ECB’s managing director, announced former New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum as England’s new Test head coach. The pair of McCullum and Stokes, since wreaked havoc in world cricket after deploying an approach the world now calls ‘Bazball'.

Before that, England managed to win just two in 17 Tests, and since their arrival, the Three Lions have beaten South Africa, Pakistan and New Zealand in the red-ball format in the past year.

Even ahead of 2023 Ashes, Stokes had asked for flat and fast pitches, and some reports even suggested that England have asked for ‘smaller boundaries’ during the mega summer clash against the mighty Aussies. Having said that, the smaller boundaries would be for both teams, and Lyon feels Australia have it in them to stop England from doing what they have been doing lately.

"We're not buying into the fact they have to do it against Australian bowlers. We just keep nailing our process and worrying about us," Lyon concluded.

India vs Australia, 4th Test: Nathan Lyon creates history as he breaks THIS bowling record in Ahmedabad

The end of the fifth day at the Narendra Modi stadium in Ahmedabad put curtains down on the marquee 2023 Border-Gavaskar series with India winning it (2-1) for the fourth straight time.

The end of the fifth day at the Narendra Modi stadium in Ahmedabad put curtains down on the marquee 2023 Border-Gavaskar series with India winning it (2-1) for the fourth straight time. Continuing their dominance at home the Indian spinners fared the best not only with the ball but also with the bat in hand. In this piece we will look at the top five players from the recently-concluded India vs Australia series. Ravindra Jadeja It’s not easy being Ravindran Jadeja. From remaining out of cricket for more than five months to winning the Player of the Series award for an all-round show upon returning to the side straightaway, only Jadeja could have done it. The left-arm maestro picked 22 wickets and scored 135 runs across four Tests to remain on top of the all-rounder's chart in the ICC rankings. In his first game since August 2022, Jadeja returned with a five-for in the first innings in Nagpur. He mounted pressure on Australia with a fighting 70 in the first innings before picking up two more wickets in the second innings to help India win the Test by an inning and 132 runs. His best performance, however, came in the following Test in Delhi where he picked his career-best figures of seven for 42 in the second innings, finishing with match figures of ten for 110, bagging yet another player of the match award. ALSO READ: BGT 2022/23: Axar Patel attains STAGGERING feat after India beat Australia 2-1 Axar Patel If there was an award for the game-changing inning in a Test, Axar would have won it not once, not twice but thrice, and that too for his batting and not bowling. India’s best player in this Border-Gavaskar series, Axar Patel impressed everyone with his batting display. Rather known and ranked as a specialised spinner, what Axar achieved with the bat in hand even promoted the Aussies to take a leaf out of his book. In Nagpur Axar scored a counter-attacking 84, whereas, in Delhi the left-handed batter completed yet another fifty, hitting 74 in the first innings. After a rare failure in the Indore Test, Axar returned with a 113-ball 79 in India’s first innings in the final Test. What’s exciting about these fifties – Axar scored the majority of these runs while India was struggling to put up runs on the board. Meanwhile, given these scores, Axar was not only India’s second-best batter in the series in terms of runs scored but was also the third-highest run-scorer (264 runs at an average of 88) after Usman Khawaja and Virat Kohli. He didn’t fare any well in bowling though picking up just three wickets. Ravichandran Ashwin There cannot be a discussion of the best players in a series in India without mentioning Ravi Ashwin’s name. The veteran spinner, for the nth time in his Test career, had an impactful series with the ball in hand. The off-spin legend was again the thorn in the flesh of the Aussies as he won the Player of the Series award alongside Jadeja for picking up the most wickets (25) this time. Throughout the series, Ashwin remained on the top of Australia and while he troubled them big time on the rank-turners in the first three Tests, he left an impression with a six-wicket haul in the final Test in Ahmedabad where the pitch refused to assist the spinners. ALSO READ: WTC Final: Reliving India's run in second cycle as they qualify for summit clash Nathan Lyon Called the best overseas spinner to have travelled to India in a very long time by the India captain Rohit Sharma, Nathan Lyon delivered what was expected out of him. Equalled with Jadeja in the wickets tally (22) in this series, Lyon, following a rusty start in the first match, tore into India’s middle-order in the Indore Test with his second eight-wicket haul in an inning in India. Despite being India's nemesis, even in Australia, Lyon got good support from the newcomers in Todd Murphy and Matthew Kuhnemann throughout the series as they returned with 14 and nine wickets, respectively. Meanwhile, with 116 wickets In the Border-Gavaskar series and 482 in Tests, Lyon stays ahead of India’s Ashwin on both lists. Usman Khawaja After warming benches during his previous two India tours, the left-handed Usman Khawaja finally got his turn this time, and he made the most of his chance. In a team full of batting superstars, Usman came good after early jitters in the first Test and remained on top by scoring the most runs among all batters. While Ashwin had his number on most of the occasions, Khawaja shined on two separate instances – one during the first innings in Delhi, where he scored a fighting 81 and then during the final Test in Ahmedabad, where he registered his maiden hundred on the Indian soil, hitting an incredible 180.

Border-Gavaskar Trophy: From Axar Patel to Nathan Lyon, here are the top five players of the series

R Ashwin returned with 6 for 91 as India finally managed to dismiss Australia for 480 on Day 2 of the fourth and final Test in Ahmedabad on Friday (March 10). Usman Khawaja and Cameron Green kicked off proceedings on Day 2 (March 10) from the overnight score 255/4 and continued to pile runs. The pair added a whopping 208-run fifth-wicket stand, from 170-4 to 378 for 5, as the duo struck a century each on a flat track but Ashwin remained economical all throughout the innings and ended with 6 for 91 to attain a huge feat.

The 36-year-old wily off-spinner Ashwin is now tied with Australian counterpart Nathan Lyon with most wickets in India-Australia Tests. Lyon, who was the Player-of-the-Match in Australia's inspiring nine-wicket win in the third Test in Indore (courtesy of his 11-fer), will aim to once again take the lead in India's first essay.

R Ashwin equals Nathan Lyon with most wickets in India-Australia Tests during Day 2 of Ahmedabad tie

Australia thumped India by nine wickets on Day 3 of the third and penultimate Test, at the Holkar Stadium, Indore, on Friday (March 03), to keep the 2022/23 Border-Gavaskar series alive at 2-1, with the final Test on March 09. Resuming the day's play, Australia needed only 76 runs for a famous win and chased down the target with Travis Head leading the charge (49*). With this win, Australia have also qualified for the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) final.

The day's play started with R Ashwin getting rid of in-form opener Usman Khawaja. The left-hander failed to open his account and was caught behind by KS Bharat as Ashwin drew the first blood in the opening over. However, from thereon, there was not much to cheer for India as Head-Labuschagne looked confident, bought some time in the middle, and guided the side to a memorable nine-wicket triumph.

Talking about the Test match, Rohit Sharma won the toss and opted to bat first. Nothing clicked for India on a pitch that turned fair and square. The likes of Rohit, Virat Kohli, Cheteshwar Pujara, Ravindra Jadeja, Shreyas Iyer, etc. all fell flat as Matthew Kuhnemann, playing his second Test, ended with a five-fer (5 for 16). India started with the ball by not being consistent in their line and length and Australia ended the opening day with a 47-run lead, with six wickets in hand.

However, the Steve Smith-led side managed to take a vital 88-run lead. In their second essay, India once again fell flat and got dismissed for 163 with Nathan Lyon taking 8 for 64 (ending with an 11-wicket haul). By virtue of his match-winning spell, Lyon became the second in the list of most wickets against India (going past Muttiah Muralitharan) and also equalled Richie Benaud's tally of most 5-fers (five) against India on their home soil. On Friday morning, Australia ended the formalities by chasing a 76-run target and have qualified for the WTC final, to be held in early June at The Oval, London. Indore Test: Nathan Lyon stars in visitors' famous win to keep series alive; Australia enter WTC final

The third and penultimate Test between India and Australia, in Indore, has been a low-scoring affair. After Rohit Sharma & Co. opted to bat first on Day 1, on Wednesday (March 01), India were dismissed for a paltry 109 before Australia only managed 197 but gained a vital 88-run lead. In reply, India folded for 163 in their second essay to give a paltry 76-run target to the visitors at stumps on Day 2.

A lot has been said and written about the quality of pitch on offer at the Holkar Stadium, Indore -- who became the host last month after BCCI shifted the venue from Dharamshala to the city in Madhya Pradesh due to poor outfield conditions. Many former cricketers and experts have slammed the pitch as it has spun considerably from the opening day itself.

Former Australian opener Matthew Hayden came down heavily on the pitch and said on Fox cricket, "This is why I’ve got a problem with these conditions. There’s no way in the world that a spin bowler should come on in the sixth over."

"4.8 degrees, that’s massive turn. That’s the sort of turn you’d expect day three. You’ve got to give batters a chance... Day one, day two should be about batting. It shouldn’t be a spin bowler’s paradise necessarily, it shouldn’t be keeping low and turning a mile on day one,” the former batter concluded.

'No way a spin bowler should come on in sixth over': Matthew Hayden slams Indore Test pitch

Nathan Lyon is the best overseas spinner to travel to India and achieve so much, reckons Indian captain Rohit Sharma following the Indore Test. For the third time in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar series, a Test match ended inside three days as Australia on Friday chased a moderate target of 76 with nine wickets in hand. With this win, they not only avoided the possibility of a series whitewash, but also punched their ticket for the finals of the World Test Championship.

Speaking to the media after the match, Rohit showered praise on Nathan Lyon, who for the second time in his career picked up an eight-wicket haul in an innings in India. During the second innings, Lyon produced the figures of eight for 63, accounting for almost everyone from top to bottom. Already under pressure with a deficit of nearly 100 runs after the end of Australia's first innings, the Indian batters tried taking the attack to the opposition but failed in their attempt big time.

Starting with the openers Shubman Gill and Rohit, Lyon deceived them with the angle before trapping Ravindra Jadeja right in front of the wickets. Meanwhile, when asked about how he would rate Nathan Lyon following his match-winning spell in Indore, Rohit said,

“Lyon should be at the top in my opinion. I have not played guys like Murali and Warner. Among the current crop he would be my number one overseas bowler to come and play here in India," Rohit Sharma said. "He has got so much consistency in his line and length. When someone is bowling with that accuracy you have to try and do something different to score runs.”

Earlier, it was during the Bengaluru Test in 2017 when Lyon picked up his first eight-wicket haul (8 for 50) against India in India. As of now, with 19 wickets in three Tests, Lyon is second on the list with most wickets in this series while Jadeja sits at the top with 21 scalps to his name.

IND vs AUS: Nathan Lyon is the best overseas spinner I have faced in India, says Rohit Sharma

Hero for Australia on day two of the Delhi Test, Nathan Lyon feels concussed David Warner should be back fit and ready for the third Test in Indore. Earlier on Saturday, it was announced that Warner is out of the remainder of the second Test due to concussion he suffered while batting in the first innings and was subsequently replaced by Matt Renshaw in the XI. Not only this, he also suffered a fractured arm too. Meanwhile, after failing in the first Test, Warner looked in certain discomfort against the Indian seamers especially against Mohammed Siraj who bowled some nasty deliveries onto his helmet and arms.

Having scored 15 in the first innings, Warner fell to Mohammed Shami and remained on the sidelines since. On the other hand, Nathan Lyon, who contributed very little with the bat, scoring 10, returned with a five-wicket haul in the first innings against India.

Speaking to the media after stumps on day two, the veteran spinner said it’s never easy to return from an injury or concussion, but knowing Warner’s stomach for comeback, Lyon is confident of him making it into the side for the third Test of the Border-Gavaskar series, scheduled from 1st to 5th March.

"When you get injured, concussed or a fracture in the arm, it's never going to be pleasant and your spirits daresay go down a little bit," Lyon told reporters. "But Davey is Davey, we love having him around the team. Talking to the medical staff, I think he could potentially play if he rests the next couple of days,” Lyon added.

"We get a decent break in between these test matches. So, if he's recovered well, I wouldn't be surprised if you see him out there again to be honest with you," he concluded.

Meanwhile, Lyon had Indian batters on the mat on day two. Starting with struggling KL Rahul, Lyon picked huge wickets of captain Rohit Sharma, Cheteshwar Pujara and returning Shreyas Iyer. After folding India on 262, one run shy of Australia’s first innings total, the visitors scored 61 for one at stumps, taking a lead of 62.

In Warner’s absence, Travis Head opened alongside Usman Khawaja and scored vital runs in testing conditions.

India’s bowling all-rounder Axar Patel produced a stunning 74 on a fighting track and helped India stay afloat in the match on day two of the second Test in Delhi. While the first two sessions largely belonged to Nathan Lyon – who spun his web around the Indian batters picking up a five-for, Axar and Ravi Ashwin’s 114-run stand for the eighth wicket made the headlines for all right reason. For the second straight Test, Axar played a masterful knock lower down the order bailing his team out of trouble. Lately been known for his power hitting, Axar scored nine fours and three sixes in his yet game-changing knock for India in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar series.

India started the day with ten wickets in hand and with both openers looking determined to deliver with the bat. This thought didn’t age well as Nathan Lyon first removed struggling KL Rahul, and then picked captain Rohit and Cheteshwar Pujara in quick succession.

Making a comeback into the team after recovering from the back injury, Shreyas Iyer also didn’t fare well with the bat, getting out on four off 15 balls. Former skipper Virat held one end and with Ravindra Jadeja on the other, both started building a partnership.

IND vs AUS, 2nd Test, Day 2: Batter Axar Patel saves India's sinking ship following Nathan Lyon's magic

It’s not that every team has a luxury of having a left-arm finger spinner in their ranks for a sub-continent tour, but Australia is lucky to have one in Ashton Agar, feels former Australian coach Darren Lehman. India had trouble facing Steve O’Keefe during their last home series against the Oz, as he picked up 12 wickets in the Pune Test itself, handing India its first defeat at home in a long time. Keeping in mind about O’Keefe’s star performance, Lehmann, who himself was a left-arm orthodox, said he’s inclined a bit towards playing Ashton as the ‘second spinner’ alongside Nathan Lyon during the India series.

"Having been there, I'm probably more inclined to play finger spinners," former Aussie coach Lehmann said on Australian radio station SENQ.

While Australia also have leggie Mitchell Swepson and newcomer Todd Murphy in their squad for the marquee Border-Gavaskar series, Lehmann said going ahead with Ashton straight away gives Australia a better chance of repeating Pune heroics in Nagpur this time. Explaining as to why the finger spinners in general have an advantage over the leg-spinners on such tracks, Lehmann said,

"It just gets through the air quicker and some spin and some don't. The leg-spinners sometimes spin it too much, if that makes sense... (for finger spinners) some skid on and you get beaten on the inside and you get an LBW. That's probably why they're looking at a finger spinner. We certainly did that four years ago (2017) and Steve O'Keefe bowled India out basically on his own in one of the last Test matches to win there,” the 52-year-old said.

Agar, who last appeared for Australia during the Sydney Test against South Africa in January, went wicket-less in the match. Unbothered by this, Lehmann thinks Ashton, who can bat well also, is perfect to play second fiddle to Lyon.

"That's why I'd be looking at someone like an Agar, bat a little bit, bowl as that second spinner," Lehmann added.

IND vs AUS 2023: Darren Lehmann feels ‘second spinner’ Ashton Agar could be an x-factor on India tour

Australia off-spinner Nathan Lyon spun a web around the West Indies batsmen in the second innings of the 1st Test, picking up six wickets and helping his team win the match by 164 runs. In the process of achieving this, Lyon has also gone past Ravichandran Ashwin on the wickets tally in this format. Earlier, in the first innings, Lyon became the 9th highest wicket-taker in Test history, and now in the second innings, he surpassed Ashwin to sit in the 8th spot with 446 scalps to his name.

Australia batted first after winning the toss and scored a mammoth 598-4 declared in the first innings, courtesy of twin double hundreds from Marnus Labuschagne (204) and Steve Smith (200*). Middle-order batsman Travis Head suffered a poor fate as he got out bowled on 99 to Kraig Brathwaite.

West Indies, on the other hand, started off well with the openers, captain Kraigg Brathwaite and debutant Tagenarine Chanderpaul each completing half-centuries. The visitors, however, couldn’t continue to pile up runs, getting all out on 283 eventually. The deficit of 315 was always going to go against them as Australia began their next innings from where they had left. Marnus again shined with the bat, completing a hundred in the second innings as well – thus becoming the eighth batsman ever to achieve the feat in Tests.

With the target of 498 in the fourth innings, West Indies it's going to be challenging. With Kraigg and Tagenarine both again stitching a partnership, the target looked under reach. The thought vanished quickly after West Indies lost a few quick wickets. Captain Brathwaite though completed his 11th Test hundred, but he still couldn’t avoid the inevitable. On day 5 of the Test, Nathan Lyon picked up his 21st five-wicket haul, and with the figures of 6-128 in the second innings, he wrapped up West Indies' batting on 333.

The second Test match will begin on December 8th in Adelaide.

ALSO READ: AUS vs WI 2022: Nathan Lyon goes past Dale Steyn to become 9th highest wicket-taker in Tests Australia batted first after winning the toss and scored a mammoth 598-4 declared in the first innings, courtesy of twin double hundreds from Marnus Labuschagne (204) and Steve Smith (200*).

AUS vs WI 2022, 1st Test: Nathan Lyon surpasses Ravi Ashwin on wickets tally, helps Australia win Perth Test

Australia spinner Nathan Lyon entered the list of the top ten highest wicket-takers in Test cricket during day 3 of the first Test against West Indies in Perth. During the fag end of the day, Lyon first picked up Jason Holder to equal Dale Steyn’s tally of 439 wickets then after dismissing Kemar Roach, he surpassed the protean legend to become the 9th highest wicket-taker in Test cricket. Lyon just needs three more wickets to go past India’s Ravichandran Ashwin, who has 442 scalps to his name.

AUS vs WI 2022: Nathan Lyon goes past Dale Steyn to become 9th highest wicket-taker in Tests

Nathan Lyon and part-time spinner Travis Head wrecked Sri Lanka on a treacherous track to help Australia to a 10-wicket win inside three days of the opening test in Galle on Friday. The tourists were in the box seat once they carved out a first innings lead of 109 in the spin-dominated, low-scoring contest at the Galle International Stadium.

Lyon (4-31) combined with spin partner Mitchell Swepson (2-34) to mow down Sri Lanka`s top order and Head polished off their tail to skittle out Sri Lanka for 113 in their second innings. Opener David Warner needed four balls to seal the win, smashing a six off Ramesh Mendis to bring up the victory.

Skipper Dimuth Karunaratne`s 23 was the highest tally on Sri Lanka`s sorry-looking scorecard, with all 10 batsmen dismissed by the spinners. Lyon finished with a match haul of nine wickets but Cameron Green was named man of the match for his score of 77.

Australia captain Pat Cummins was pleased that they mastered difficult conditions to fashion "an amazing win". "Turning up this morning I didn`t think it was going to happen that fast," he said. "We were really clear in our planning how everyone was going to go about it." "I thought the bravery and the proactiveness shown, especially by our batters, was fantastic."

Earlier, Australia had added eight runs to their overnight score before losing their last two wickets and being bowled out for 318. Sri Lanka gave an early indication of how they wanted to bat in their second innings, when their openers milked 17 runs from the opening over off Mitchell Starc. That approach was fraught with risks and when Cummins introduced spin from both ends after three overs, Sri Lanka`s batting order simply caved in.

Karunaratne fell after his attempted sweep against Lyon resulted in a bottom-edge, while opening partner Pathum Nissanka (14) completely missed the ball trying to play the same shot against Swepson.
Head, who had gone 26 tests without a wicket, also got the ball to turn viciously as he dismissed Dinesh Chandimal and Dhananjaya de Silva in his first over. He struck twice in his third over, too, as Sri Lanka were bundled out in 22.5 overs - their shortest ever completed test innings.

Sri Lanka were without veteran batsman Angelo Mathews who tested positive for COVID-19 on Thursday and was substituted by Oshada Fernando in the second innings. Karunaratne was particularly unhappy with the way Sri Lanka batted in home conditions.

"We`ve been playing in these conditions, we knew it`s going to turn, but the decisions we took were horrible," he said. "Batting in the second innings was not easy, especially against Lyon who was turning the ball heavily. We just wanted to put pressure on him," he said of their ultra-aggressive approach.
Galle also hosts the second and final test from July 8.

Australia crush Sri Lanka after Nathan Lyon and Travis Head's spin web, visitors take 1-0 lead

Off-spinner Nathan Lyon took five wickets to help Australia beat Pakistan by 115 runs in the final session of the deciding third test in Lahore and clinch the three-match series 1-0 on Friday.

The 34-year-old took the prized wickets of Imam-ul-Haq, Azhar Ali and Babar Azam to end Pakistan's resistance and finished with figures of 5-83 in Pakistan's second innings.

Fast bowler Pat Cummins provided ample support by picking up three wickets as Pakistan folded for 235 on the final day of the test match at the Gaddafi Stadium, chasing a target of 351.

Pakistan captain Babar, who saved the hosts from the jaws of defeat in the second test in Karachi with a 196 in the second innings, made 55.

Cummins dismissed Fawad Alam and wicketkeeper Mohammad Rizwan, who also struck an unbeaten 104 in the second innings of the drawn Karachi test, in successive overs with both batters falling leg before wicket.

Television replays, however, showed Rizwan would have survived if he had asked for a review of the umpire's decision.

Australia also erred by not reviewing a not-out decision for catch against Babar with replays showing the hosts' batting mainstay had got a glove to a Lyon delivery which was taken at slip by Steve Smith.

Lyon should have picked up Babar on 45 just before tea but Travis Head failed to hold on to the catch at deep midwicket.

The off-spinner had the last laugh when he induced an edge from Babar with Smith, who had a tough time in the series with his catching, completing a brilliant grab low at slip.

The first two tests in the series -- the first between the sides in Pakistan since 1998 -- were drawn.

The experienced Azhar, playing his 94th test but the first at his home ground, also fell for 17 to Lyon after a decision that stoked controversy.

Australia asked for a review of the not-out decision, and the third umpire ruled in favour of the touring side after replays showed a faint edge when the ball passed the bat, although Azhar was convinced he had not hit it.

Nathan Lyon spins Australia to historic Test series win over Pakistan in Lahore

After the end of the second and penultimate Test between hosts Pakistan and Australia, the series scoreline remains 0-0. While the series opener was a run-fest in Rawalpindi, the pitch at Karachi also failed to provide a result as the two teams have shifted focus to the series finale, which will get underway at the Gadaffi Stadium, Lahore on March 21.

Ahead of the third and final Test, former Pakistan cricketer Aquib Javed has slammed the Ramiz Raja-led Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) for the pitches it has produced and asked them to take a leaf from the curators in India. In this regard, he said on his Youtube channel, "Why go anywhere else? I would say find out from the curators in Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai etc how they prepare the turners on which Indian spinners dominate. I am surprised until now Pakistan has not been able to produce pure turning tracks, which will help our spinners."

Thus, Javed has asked PCB to learn from the Indian curators in preparing turning pitches which would benefit the hosts. In the recently-concluded India-Sri Lanka Test series, in India, Rohit Sharma & Co. whitewashed the Lankans despite not playing on rank-turners but on pitches which did offer adequete help for the spinners and also led to pacers chipping in with regular scalps. Thus, it will be interesting to see what kind of a surface is prepared for the Pakistan-Australia Test series finale.

'Find out from Indian curators...' - Ex-Pak cricketer lashes out at PCB over pitches prepared for AUS Tests

Pakistan and Australia played out a humdinger of a clash in the just-concluded second and penultimate Test at the National Stadium, Karachi on Wednesday (March 16). After Day 4 ended with Pakistan at 192-2, in pursuit of a mammoth 506-run target set by Pat Cummins & Co., Babar Azam stood tall from one end to prevent a memorable win for the visitors with an impressive 196-run knock in Karachi. After Babar fell with over 12 overs remaining in the final day's play, Mohammad Rizwan's 104 not out propelled Pakistan to 443-7 as both sides settled for a draw with the series scoreline still reading 0-0.

Courtesy Babar's lengthy stay in the middle, Pakistan managed to escape from the jaws of a defeat after conceding a big first-innings lead. Babar batted for over 400 deliveries and registered the highest score by a captain in the final innings of a Test match. With a terrific draw, courtesy Babar, Rizwan and Abdullah Shafique (96), Pakistan created history and became only the second team to bat over 1,000 deliveries (1,030) in the fourth and final innings for a draw.

The first instance came during England's timeless Test in Durban, versus South Africa, in 1939. That match went on for as many as 10 days and had to be stopped as the English team would've missed the boat for home. Back then, England were 654/5 in chase of 696 in 218.2 overs (1,746) when the match ended in a draw.

After the match, Babar said at the post-match presentation, "The plan was to bat session-by-session and build partnerships. It was a team effort, as others (Shafique and Rizwan) chipped in with useful contributions too. We took the onus and the main focus was to build partnerships right throughout the day. Rizwan was outstanding as he saved the Test for us eventually. We wanted to continue to bat in the same way (after the tea break) and we tried to be positive and play our shots. The team needed this knock, so I tried to bat for as long as I could."

Meanwhile, Cummins stated, "I think so, I think we had enough overs, it was a pretty good wicket even on day 4 and day 5. We created a few chances, but we failed to grab them. Mitch Swepson was fantastic on debut, his figures don't do justice to the way he bowled. Nathan was impressive towards the end, as he always does on day 5. For an Australian team to bat over two days at the start of a Test match, I don't think we've done that for a long time. Lots of positives from this match and so far in the series. The way we batted was fantastic, the way we hunted and took those wickets on day 3 with reverse swing, that was brilliant as well. And we were always ahead in the game, so really proud of the boys."

The team needed this knock, so I tried to bat for as long as I could." Meanwhile, Cummins stated, "I think so, I think we had enough overs, it was a pretty good wicket even on day 4 and day 5.

Babar Azam-led Pakistan become second team to achieve historic feat after drawn Test vs Australia

Australia will press for an Ashes series whitewash against England to boost their chances of making the final of the 2021-23 World Test Championship (WTC), spin spearhead Nathan Lyon said on Sunday.

The home side have already claimed an unassailable 3-0 lead in the five-Test series and the importance of maintaining their winning run was not lost on Lyon.

"I've never ever considered (a match) dead-rubber when you wear the baggy green and go out and represent Australia in a Test match," off-spinner Lyon said ahead of the fourth test due to begin at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Wednesday.

"So there's no dead-rubbers. Firstly because it's (the) Test championship, but another one, we want to go five-nil up."

"Obviously Ashes for me is the pinnacle, but I'd love to be part of the Test championship final, whether that's at Lord's or wherever it may be in the world... A lot of work to do to get there."

Australia could not make the inaugural WTC final last year, when New Zealand beat India to win the crown, but lead the standings after their red-hot Ashes form.

Lyon was aware that "world class" England would be desperate to salvage some pride in the last two Tests after being thoroughly outplayed in the series so far.

While Joe Root's future as England's Test captain looks in doubt, the 31-year-old is currently the leading scorer in the series though his quest for his first century in Australia continues.

"He has not scored a century but he's got off to some decent starts and he's made some decent scores," Lyon said.

"Our job is to try and restrict and try and remove each and every batter that comes out there... and I think we've been doing a really good job in that at the moment.

"I don't want to rest on our heels or anything like that. We want to get better... and try and put Joe under a lot more pressure when he first comes to the crease so he doesn't get a start.

"But at the end of the day, he's a world class player."

While batsman Travis Head will miss the Sydney Test after testing positive for COVID-19, all other squad members, staff and families have returned negative results in the most recent round of testing, Cricket Australia said.

Mitchell Marsh and Josh Inglis, who were called up as cover, were to join the squad later on Sunday, along with opener Marcus Harris.

Nic Maddinson will remain in Melbourne as a standby player, the CA added.

Nathan Lyon says Australia eyeing Ashes whitewash with eye on WTC final

England were spared the ignominy of the follow-on but Australia appeared on course for victory after dominating day three of the day-night second Ashes test at the Adelaide Oval on Saturday.

Spearheading Australia's pace attack, depleted by the absence of Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood, Mitchell Starc combined with spinner Nathan Lyon to bundle out England for 236.

The hosts, who had declared their first innings on 473-9, finished the day on 45-1 for an overall lead of 282 and looking primed to go 2-0 up in the five-test series.

Marcus Harris was batting on 21, having featured in a mix-up that resulted in opening partner David Warner's run out for 13.

Ashes 2nd Test, Day 3: Hosts in full control after Starc and Lyon wreak havoc to bundle out England for 236

Australia thrashed England by nine wickets in the series-opener of Ashes 2021-22 to get off to a winning start at The Gabba and take a 1-0 lead in the five-match series. It was a dominant performance from the Aussies, who proved yet again why Gabba is known as their fortress. Australia will be looking to make it two wins in a row when they take on England in the second Ashes Test at the Adelaide Oval in Adelaide beginning from Thursday.

Ahead of the start of the second Test, Australian spinner Nathan Lyon has made a bold prediction about Ashes 2021-22, backing Australia to register a 5-0 clean sweep against England. Lyon, who became the third Australian bowler to complete 400 Test wickets in the first Test against England, said there is no reason why the hosts can't pull off a 5-0 series win if they play the right brand of cricket.

“I do believe we can win 5-0 ... for sure. “I’ve never walked into a Test series thinking I’m going to go in there and lose a game. We’ll do everything we can. If we prepare well and play the right positive brand of cricket under our new captain, there’s no reason why we can’t win 5-0," Lyon told The Sydney Morning Herald.

“In saying that, England’s a classy outfit, and they’re going to challenge us here and there. With two pink-ball games now, we’re going to make sure we’re totally on our game," he added.

The second Test between the two sides in Adelaide is all set to be a pink-ball affair with England expected to go with an all-pace attack after left-arm spinner Jack Leach was taken to the cleaners in the first Test. Australia might also opt for only pacers in their bowling attack for the game, however, Lyon believes both teams should go with a spinner no matter how the wicket is.

“I’m always happy to play a spinner on no matter what wicket. The way I look at Test cricket, you just can’t pick your team for the first session of the Test. Test cricket is a long, challenging game, but I am expecting [Stuart] Broad and [Jimmy] Anderson to play," said Lyon.

"Whether they play a spinner or not, that’s not up to me. It is challenging but no doubt he’s a class bowler and he’ll bounce back. He’ll do his work and we need to make sure Australia is prepared. I don’t know what the Adelaide wicket is going to look like but I can guarantee it’ll be a cracking wicket in my eyes," he added.

Australia also have an injury concern in the form of David Warner, who copped blows on his body while batting during the first Test and has 'severely bruised ribs'. However, he is expected to return to full fitness for the second Test in Adelaide and open the batting for the hosts.

'We can win 5-0': Australian star makes bold Ashes prediction ahead of 2nd Test against England

Nathan Lyon captured a long-awaited 400th test victim and spun Australia to an emphatic nine-wicket victory in the first Ashes test in Brisbane on Saturday, with England losing eight wickets in a stunning morning collapse at the Gabba on day four.

Pat Cummins` team head to the day-night second test in Adelaide with huge momentum and a 1-0 lead in the five-match series after dominating England with bat, ball and in the field.

The tourists, meanwhile, will be left to pore over their failings in Brisbane, with question marks hanging over their selections and tactics, and with few ready solutions for the batting woes ruthlessly exposed by Australia.

Cummins, in his first match as skipper, said he thought someone was smiling over him.

"A lot of things did go right, probably from the toss," he added.

"I thought it was a really complete performance. The bowlers did their thing on day one. I was really happy how everyone stuck to it. We turned up today and we were still ahead of the game."

Resuming on 220 for two with the match still within their grasp, England lost their last eight wickets for 77 runs to be bowled out for 297 by lunch, leaving Australia needing only 20 runs to win.

England paceman Ollie Robinson dismissed wicketkeeper Alex Carey, who stood in for the injured David Warner, for nine but Marcus Harris (nine not out) hit Mark Wood to the fence to wrap up the match.

England captain Joe Root was disappointed his side could not build on their positive end to day three.

"Frustration," he said. "We worked really hard to get ourselves back in the game last night. It’s a shame that we just couldn’t quite manage to get through that initial phase because it could have been very different."

Lyon, who finished with 4-91 for the second innings, had been stranded on 399 wickets since the series-deciding defeat to India in January at the same venue but wasted no time turning the contest on its head on Saturday.

In his second over, the shaven-headed 34-year-old deceived Dawid Malan (82) with a sharply-dipping ball that produced a bat-pad catch to Marnus Labuschagne in close.

That broke a crucial 162-run stand Malan had built with captain Joe Root on day three that had frustrated Australia`s bowlers and stretched into a third session.

England promptly lost three wickets for 11 runs with a fired-up Cameron Green having Root caught for 89, the England skipper denied a maiden hundred in Australia yet again.

Lyon had Ollie Pope caught for four by Steve Smith at slip with a ball that exploded out of the Gabba pitch to catch the middle order batsman`s edge.

Ben Stokes and Jos Buttler combined for a 32-run partnership before Australia captain Pat Cummins intervened, squaring up Stokes with a short ball that sent an edge flying to Green in the gully.

Lyon nabbed his third wicket when Ollie Robinson top-edged an attempted reverse-sweep and then his fourth by bowling Mark Wood.

Green completed England`s humiliation with his second wicket by having Chris Woakes caught behind for 16 to wrap up the innings.

To The Australian Public,

We pride ourselves on our honesty. So it’s been disappointing to see that our integrity has been questioned by some journalists and past players in recent days in regard to the Cape Town Test of 2018.

We have already answered questions many times on this issue but we feel compelled to put the key facts on the record again:

We did not know a foreign substance was taken onto the field to alter the condition of the ball until we saw the images on the big screen at Newlands

And to those who despite the absence of evidence, insist that ‘we must have known' about the use of a foreign substance simply because we are bowlers, we say this: The umpires during that Test match, Nigel Llong and Richard Illingworth, both very respected and experienced umpires, inspected the ball after the images surfaced on the TV coverage and did not change it because there was no sign of damage.

None of this excuses what happened on the field that day at Newlands. It was wrong and it should have never happened.

We’ve learned valuable lessons and we’d like to think the public can see a change for the better in terms of the way we play, the way we behave and respect the game. Our commitment to improving as people and players will continue.

We respectfully request an end to the rumour-mongering and innuendo.

“I have had the opportunity to play and learn from some of the greats of Australian Cricket and have made friendship that will last a lifetime. Walking out onto the field in Brisbane to celebrate 100 matches was an extremely proud moment personally for me.

“Even though we didn’t get the job done I will continue to learn, grow and aim to become a better cricketer everyday.

“A massive congratulations to Ajinkya Rahane and Team India on the series win! Thank you also for your sportsmanship and the incredibly kind gesture of a signed Team India shirt. It will be a great addition to the man cave. Now time to reset and chase some bigger goals,” Lyon wrote on Instagram.

'Thank you': Aussie spinner Nathan Lyon reacts to signed Team India shirt

Sri Lanka's spin wizard Muttiah Muralitharan is the only bowler in the history of Test cricket to scalp 800 wickets. Former Lankan legend achieved this feat after dismissing Pragyan Ojha at Galle in 2010, which was also his final Test match.

Ten years since the record and no bowler has neared the record. However, in the current generation, India's Ravichandran Ashwin and Australia's Nathan Lyon have had a prolific career in Test cricket for their respective countries. When asked on who could break this record, Muralitharan replied that India's R Ashwin has a chance at it.

"Will anyone reach to 800 wickets? Ashwin has a chance because he is a great bowler," Muralitharan told the Sydney Morning Herald. "Other than that, I don't think any younger bowler coming in will go to 800. Maybe Nathan Lyon is not good enough to reach it. He is close to 400 but he has had to play many, many matches to get there."

Muralitharan went on to explain why there may not be another golden era in spin cricket in Tests.

"The problem in Test cricket is that Twenty20s and one-day internationals have changed the dynamics. When I played, the batsmen were technically so good and wickets were flat; now, they try to finish matches in three days," the former off-spinner added.

"The bowlers in my day had to do extra work to get spin and do something magic to get results. Nowadays, if you bowl line and length over a period of time, you will get five wickets. It is guaranteed because batsmen cannot stay for long without attacking.

"You have a better chance of taking wickets, which is why spinners only have to set the field properly, bowl line and length and let the pitches and batsmen do the rest. Spinners used to have to work hard for wickets, which is why they worked hard on developing other deliveries. Now they do that in T20 cricket instead. They bowl different variations because batsmen are coming after them. But in Test cricket you don't need to do it."
