As a result of this ruling, the National League for Democracy will come under further pressure as the ruling government has already hinted at a possible ban on them ahead of the elections next year.&nbsp;

According to AFP, a source said that co-accused Win Myint, the deposed president, was also given the same sentence as Suu Kyi. Both of them were accused of voter fraud and using intimidation in 2020.&nbsp;

While no official statement was released on the part of the Myanmar government, the junta has always maintained that Suu Kyi was given all the opportunities to defend herself in court.&nbsp;

A source said that the couple had been remanded in custody and were being sent to Insein prison. The jail is on the outskirts of the commercial capital of Yangon where many political prisoners are held.

The source added their young daughter remained "safe and well".

Notably, Britain has announced imposition of fresh sanctions to target military-linked businesses in Myanmar and is also joining the case against Myanmar in the International Court of Justice.&nbsp;Gambia has brought a case against Myanmar alleging that its military conducted genocidal operations against Rohingya Muslims in 2016 and 2017. Britain is the fourth country after the Maldives, Netherlands and Canada, to vow formal support for the case.

People in Myanmar forced to rely on charity due to rising costs and scarcity

Myanmar's military chief said on Friday (August 19) that the junta was open to negotiations with ousted leader Aung San Suu Kyi to end the crisis sparked by its coup after her trials in a junta court have reached a conclusion.&nbsp;

Junta chief said that he would consider allowing Suu Kyi to be moved to house arrest from prison but only after verdicts in a litany of cases against her have been reached.&nbsp;

Min Aung Hlaing said in a statement, "After the legal processes against her according to the law are finished we are going to consider (negotiations) based on her response."&nbsp;

The statement added, "I will consider the matter...after the verdict is done. We did not impose strong charges on her and showed mercy even though we were able to do more."&nbsp;&nbsp;

Crimes against humanity continue to be systematically committed in Myanmar, with ongoing conflicts severely impacting women and children, according to evidence gathered to date by the Independent Investigative Mechanism for Myanmar (Mechanism) and outlined in its annual report released on Tuesday. The Mechanism has collected more than three million information items from almost 200 sources since starting operations three years ago, the UN said in a press statement citing the report.

This includes interview statements, documentation, videos, photographs, geospatial imagery and social media material. The available information indicates that sexual and gender-based crimes, including rape and other forms of sexual violence, and crimes against children have been perpetrated by members of the security forces and armed groups.

According to the report, children in Myanmar have been tortured, conscripted and arbitrarily detained, including as proxies for their parents. "Crimes against women and children are amongst the gravest international crimes, but they are also historically underreported and under-investigated," said Nicholas Koumjian, Head of the Mechanism.

"Our team has dedicated expertise to ensure targeted outreach and investigations so that these crimes can ultimately be prosecuted. Perpetrators of these crimes need to know that they cannot continue to act with impunity. We are collecting and preserving the evidence so that they will one day be held to account," he added.

According to the report, "there are ample indications that since the military takeover in February 2021, crimes have been committed in Myanmar on a scale and in a manner that constitutes a widespread and systematic attack against a civilian population" and the nature of potential criminality is also expanding.

This includes the execution of four individuals by Myanmar`s military on July 25, which was carried out after the report was prepared. The report is released just two weeks ahead of the five-year commemoration of clearance operations which resulted in the displacement of nearly one million Rohingya people.

Most of the Rohingya who were deported or forcibly displaced at that time are still in camps for refugees or internally displaced persons. "While the Rohingya consistently express their desire for a safe and dignified return to Myanmar, this will be very difficult to achieve unless there is accountability for the atrocities committed against them, including through prosecutions of the individuals most responsible for those crimes," said Koumjian.

"The continued plight of the Rohingya and the continuing violence in Myanmar illustrate the important role of the Mechanism to facilitate justice and accountability and help deter further atrocities," the UN expert added.&nbsp;

The newspaper reported: "Pearl-coloured eyes, plantain branch-shaped back, white hair, a distinctive tail, auspicious plot signs on the skin, five claws on the front legs and four on the back legs and big ears."&nbsp;

As far as history is considered, white elephants were considered extremely auspicious in Southeast Asian culture. Ancient rulers of the region acquired as many as they could to boost their fortunes.&nbsp;

It is said tha the ruinous cost of keeping the beasts in appropriately lavish style gave rise to the modern expression in which a "white elephant" is useless if beautiful, possession.&nbsp;

Myanmar's military-led government that seized power from elected leader Aung San Suu Kyi in February 2021 has been accused of thousands of extrajudicial killings since then, but the hangings announced Monday were the country's first official executions in decades.&nbsp;

Among the four executed were Phyo Zeya Thaw, a 41-year-old former lawmaker from Suu Kyi’s party, and Kyaw Min Yu, a 53-year-old democracy activist better known as Ko Jimmy. Hla Myo Aung and Aung Thura Zaw were the two other people executed.&nbsp;

Execution of four democracy activists have drawn global condemnation, it has also drawn the eyes of the citizens within the country. Amid this, a small group of protests broke out in Myanmar, a dozen mass protesters took to the streets holding demonstrations.

They harmed many innocent people. There were many big losses which could not be replaced."

The International Court of Justice (ICJ), United Nations' highest court ruled on Friday (July 22) that Rohingya genocide case against military-ruled Myanmar can go ahead. ICJ in The Hague has rejected all objections from Myanmar to a case filed by west African nation of Gambia. The case was filed in 2019. The decision means that full hearings can take place at the court over Myanmar's violent crackdown on the Rohingya.

ICJ president Joan Donoghue said the tribunal "finds that it has jurisdiction... to entertain the application filed by the republic of the Gambia, and that the said application is admissible".

Five years ago, Hundreds of thousands of Rohingya Muslims fled Myanmar to escape the crackdown. There were reports of murder, arson and rape.

Around 850,000 Rohingya are languishing in camps in neighbouring Bangladesh while another 600,000 Rohingya remain in Myanmar's southwestern Rakhine state.

At ICJ initially, Myanmar was represented by Nobel laureate and former leader Aung San Suu Kyi. However, her regime was toppled last year by Myanmar military.

Mainly-Muslim Gambia filed the case in November 2019 alleging that Myanmar's treatment of the Rohingya breached the 1948 UN Genocide Convention.

Myanmar had argued that the court had no jurisdiction in this matter. It had demanded that the case be dismissed in preliminary stages. However, Myanmar assertion that Gambia was acting as "proxy" of Organisation of Islamic Co-operation (OIC) was rejected unanimously by the judges.

Only states, and not organisations, are allowed to file cases at the ICJ, which has ruled on disputes between countries since just after World War II.

Judges also unanimously dismissed Myanmar's contention that Gambia was not direct party to the alleged genocide and hence could not file the case.

Finally, they threw out by 15-1 Myanmar's claim that there was no formal dispute at the time Gambia filed the case, and that the court therefore had no jurisdiction.

It could however take years for full hearings and a final judgment in the case.

UN top court says Myanmar genocide case can proceed

Reports claim soldiers in Myanmar have admitted to killing and torturing civilians.

A report by the BBC said it had interviewed soldiers who had defected to a local civilian militia group. The report&nbsp;said soldiers were ordered to fire at&nbsp;a village in central Myanmar as they shot civilians. There were also reports of sexual abuse against women in Yae Myet village.

Myanmar leader Aung San Suu Kyi had appeared before the world court last year after Gambia accused the Myanmar military leadership of genocide against Rohingyas.

Thousands of Rohingyas fled to neighbouring Bangladesh in 2017 triggering a refugee crisis.&nbsp;Reports say despite several attempts, Rohingya refugees have refused to leave the camps in Bangladesh as the government began transporting refugees to an island in the Bay of Bengal.

Last week, rebels had claimed they captured junta troops as the fragile peace with the Arakan Army remained on tenterhooks. There has been largescale violence reported in Rakhine state which is home to Rohingyas as Rights groups have repeatedly accused the government soldiers of committing crimes.
