With this latest development, it is highly likely that the election victory will now be seized by military-backed Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP).&nbsp;

In a landslide victory, the NLD party won the junta-annulled 2020 general election. However, the elections were deemed to be not fair by the junta which later detained Aung San Suu Kyi and imposed a state of emergency.&nbsp;

As per broadcaster MRTV, the NLD will be "automatically cancelled as a political party" from Wednesday.

Myanmar junta chief Min Aung Hlaing said Monday that he would take "decisive action" against the country’s rebel National Unity Government (NUG) and its allied ethnic armed groups.

He emphasised that martial law had been extended throughout the country in 40 townships. The&nbsp;majority of these towns are strongholds for anti-junta forces.&nbsp;To crush the resistance led by the NUG and PDFs, he commanded his soldiers to "effectively use the firearms provided."

Min Aung Hlaing remarks came as he addressed 8,000 service members Monday who attended the annual Armed Forces Day parade in Myanmar's capital Naypyidaw.

The junta chief said that the military would then hold "free and fair elections" upon the completion of the state of emergency.&nbsp;

Apparently, Myanmar's military had planned to organise elections by August this year. However, it is likely to be delayed as in February it announced that the countrywide state of emergency would prolong for another six months. It is important to note that after seizing control in February 2021, the junta has declared three extensions of six months up until now.&nbsp;

This comes as according to reports, over 3,100 people have been killed as a result of the military's crackdown on opposition since the coup. United Nations reports suggest that the coup has resulted in the displacement of more than a million people.

The spokesperson&nbsp;did not confirm how many civilians had died in Nam Neint village, but several claims were made by protesters on social media forums.&nbsp;

He said reports that the military had killed civilians were to create "illusions between local people and the Tatmadaw".&nbsp;

A report published by the un has accused Myanmar's military of creating a perpetual human rights crisis in the country. The UN has called for an immediate end to violence. As per UN, two years from the February 1, 2021 coup that toppled Aung San Suu Kyi's civilian government, the situation is a festering catastrophe.

The junta’s team in a statement said that the instance took place at Nyaunglabin township in the Bago region around 150 kilometres north of commercial hub Yangon at around 12:20 pm local time (05:50 GMT).

It also released pictures of the site, that showed roof tiles littering a platform.

Following the attack, junta chief Min Aung Hlaing acknowledged that over a third of the country's townships were not under the control of the full military.

The group claimed responsibility for the explosion of a bridge in Nyaunglabin on February 09 but did not issue a statement.

"This year is decisive for us to completely uproot the military regime," said Acchariya, a Buddhist monk attending the rally.

Others in the crowd chanted: "We are the people, we have the future" and "The revolution must prevail."

Activists also staged a protest in the Philippine capital, Manila.

Myanmar's military took power after complaining of fraud in a November 2020 general election won by Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi's party. Election monitoring groups found no evidence of mass fraud.

It declared a state of emergency for a year when it took power and has since extended it twice for six months, with the latest phase expiring on Wednesday.

Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy (NLD) party was decimated by the coup, with thousands of its members arrested or jailed, including Suu Kyi, and many more in hiding. Suu Kyi has described this year's planned election as "phoney" and said her party&nbsp;would not acknowledge it.

According to a statement by Treasury Department, US on Tuesday imposed sanctions on Myanmar's Union Election Commission, mining enterprises and energy officials, among others, reported Reuters.&nbsp;

The United States imposed sanctions on Myanmar&nbsp;earlier as well&nbsp;however this is the first time Washington has targeted Myanmar Oil and Gas Enterprise (MOGE) officials. Among other countries that also announced sanctions on Myanmar are Canada, Australia and the United Kingdom.&nbsp;Canada targeted six people and imposed additional sanctions on the export, sale, supply or shipment of aviation fuel to the Myanmar military regime.&nbsp;

These latest sanctions also target the managing director and deputy managing director of MOGE. As per the Treasury Department, the state-owned enterprise, MOGE, is the junta's largest revenue-generating enterprise.&nbsp;

US also designated Myanmar's Union Minister of Energy, the key person who overlooks all the engagements pertaining to the national and international energy sector.&nbsp;Last year, while citing aerial bombings by Myanmar's military that killed as many as 100 people, Washington applied curbs on Sky Aviator, a key supplier of military aircraft parts to Myanmar's&nbsp;military.

Reversing a steady decline that was seen in the Opium cultivation between 2014 and 2020, the illicit crop growing has surged in Myanmar since the military seized the power in 2021 and this is according to the United Nations in its annual Opium survey for 2022.

A human rights group and 16 individuals from Myanmar have filed a criminal complaint against Myanmar’s military in Germany, accusing them of war crimes, genocide, and crimes against humanity. The lawsuit against Myanmar military generals and others was filed last week, said the advocacy group, Fortify Rights, in a statement, on Tuesday (January 24). The 215-page criminal complaint and more than 1,000 pages of annexes were filed with the Federal Public Prosecutor General of Germany, last week, under the principle of universal jurisdiction, said the rights group which is also leading the legal case.&nbsp;

Notably, the legal principle enables a state to prosecute individuals responsible for mass atrocities regardless of where the crimes occurred or the nationality of their perpetrators and victims. Furthermore, the lawsuit is based on more than 1,000 interviews which were conducted by various rights groups since 2013 as well as leaked documents from the Myanmar army.&nbsp;

The complaint alleges that the “Myanmar military systematically killed, raped, tortured, imprisoned, disappeared, persecuted, and committed other acts that amount to genocide, crimes against humanity, and war crimes in violation of the German Code of Crimes Against International Law,” said the Fortify Rights.&nbsp;

“We trust in Germany to open an investigation and seek justice for genocide, crimes against humanity, and war crimes committed by the military and its leaders in Myanmar,” said Nickey Diamond, a member rights group who also experienced and witnessed crimes allegedly committed by the Myanmar military in 2021.&nbsp;

Notably, the Myanmar generals are already facing an investigation by the International Criminal Court (ICC) and a genocide case before the International Court of Justice. The Fortify Rights-led lawsuit was also filed days before Myanmar would mark two years since Senior General Min Aung Hlaing seized power from the elected government of Aung San Suu Kyi on February 1. &nbsp;

“Despite international attention and several ongoing accountability initiatives, the Myanmar military still enjoys complete impunity, and that must end. These crimes cannot go unpunished,” said Smith. The complaint also requested German authorities to launch a “structural investigation” of the situation in Myanmar which Fortify Rights believes would uncover numerous other crimes.

"The authorities fired guns to break up the crowd and bring the riot under control," the junta further said on Saturday. The deceased inmate was a political prisoner, according to local media while a report by BBC Burmese on Saturday said the inmate, identified as Ko Wai Yan Phyo, was jailed on terrorism charges. The report pointed out that there was another casualty in the riot but there is no official confirmation yet. However, it was not specified whether the amnesty would include those jailed as part of a crackdown on dissent. On Friday, the United Nations said that among these 7,012 prisoners, about 300 were political prisoners. "It's about 300 who were political prisoners," UN spokesperson Jeremy Laurence said during a press conference. The king, who had usurped his brother, "would gladly hail the capture of a real white elephant in his own day as an assent from the Powers of Nature to his own legitimate royalty," the envoy added.

But the fortunes of the creatures are tied up with the ruler under whom they were captured.

Two elephants, once feted by a former junta, are now confined to a damp, out-of-the-way compound in commercial hub Yangon where they receive few visitors.

"Rattha Nandaka" will spend its days in a special compound for white elephants in military-built capital Naypyidaw, AFP reported.&nbsp;

Jailed Myanmar leader Aung San Suu Kyi's political party on Saturday (December 31) condemned the&nbsp;latest jail sentence announced against her and said that it would continue to oppose the military junta whose court imposed it.&nbsp;On Friday, Suu Kyi was handed a seven-year jail on corruption charges. Rights groups say that the trials were a sham. The Nobel laureate, 77, has now been sentenced to a total of 33 years in prison.

Former president and Suu Kyi ally Win Myint received the same sentence on Friday.&nbsp; 
 
Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy (NLD) central committee said in a statement, "Win Myint and Aung San Suu Kyi worked for development of the country during the time they were in power, and they worked according to the law."

The NLD "will continue to work with the people... for the release of all political prisoners, to get rid of the military dictatorship and fight for justice", it said.

The military has cited alleged widespread voter fraud during elections in November 2020, which were won resoundingly by the NLD, as a reason for its coup, which sparked huge protests and a bloody crackdown.&nbsp;

International observers said at the time that the polls were largely free and fair.

Myanmar's ousted leader Aung San Suu Kyi will receive the final verdicts on five remaining charges in the 18-month trial on Friday, the news agency AFP reported quoting a legal source said, adding that Suu Kyi appeared in good health.&nbsp;

The source close to the matter said on Monday, "Both sides gave final arguments today at court. There will be a verdict on coming Friday (30th) December." As per the news agency, the source requested anonymity as they were not authorised to speak to the media.&nbsp;

The last five corruption charges that Suu Kyi faces relate to the rental of a helicopter for a government minister, a case in which she had allegedly not followed regulations and caused "a loss to the state". Reports have mentioned that each carries a maximum jail term of 15 years.&nbsp;

Recently, the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) urged the military junta to release Suu Kyi. The UN body called for the "immediate release of all arbitrarily detained prisoners," including Suu Kyi and ex-president Win Myint.&nbsp;

It was the UN's first-ever resolution on the ongoing turmoil in the Southeast Asian nation. But in the resolution, permanent members and close junta allies China and Russia abstained.&nbsp;

The Nobel laureate has been in prison for almost two years. On February 1, 2021, Myanmar's military began a coup d'état and detained democratically elected members of the country's ruling party, the National League for Democracy (NLD).&nbsp;

The 77-year-old was found guilty on 14 charges ranging from corruption to illegally importing walkie-talkies and breaching the official secrets act. She has been jailed for 26 years.&nbsp;
