<h2><strong>The Pakistan NDMA report</strong></h2>

<p>Monsoon rains and floods have devastated parts of Pakistan with six fatalities and nine injuries recorded in the past 24 hours, reported the NDMA. According to the report, as many as 97 houses have also been damaged due to torrential rain which continues to wreak havoc across Pakistan.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Among the 86 people who have lost their lives since June 25, were 37 children, 16 women, and 33 men, reported the NDMA, with most casualties reported in Pakistan’s Punjab province.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Punjab has been the most affected by the recent rains and floods with 52 casualties followed by Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, with 20 deaths and six deaths reported in Balochistan, as per the official data.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>NDMA predictions</strong>&nbsp;</h2>

<p>Earlier this year, the NDMA had predicted that there was a 72 per cent chance of devastating floods in Pakistan in 2023, reported ARY News citing the data.&nbsp;</p>

<p>NDMA chairman Lieutenant General Inam Haider, in a briefing to the Public Accounts Committee (PAC), had attributed these floods to a rapid rise in the temperature, glacier melting and early monsoon, reported the news agency ANI.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The NDMA and Pakistan’s Climate Change Ministry had been monitoring 17 satellites and 36 flood early warning systems, said Haider, adding that if catastrophic floods like last year were to happen again the country would face a huge economic crisis.</p>

<h2><strong>Punjab on high alert</strong>&nbsp;</h2>

<p>Punjab’s Director General Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA), Imran Qureshi, on Tuesday, asked the disaster response team of Rescue 1122 to be on high alert, reported GeoTv. He said that there should be enough petrol and diesel for the rescue operations and also asked them to stock up on medicines at medical camps.&nbsp;</p>

<p>He added, “Appropriate place and food should be arranged for the animals,” as quoted by the Pakistan media report. The high alert by the PDMA official was also issued after India released “95,027 cusecs of water from Harike to Sutlej River,” said Qureshi.</p>

<h2><strong>River Sutlej in India</strong></h2>

<p>This comes after the Sutlej River breached its Dhussi bandh at two places, on Tuesday causing significant damage to the embankment in the Indian state of Punjab’s Jalandhar district with water flooding surrounding areas and mainly agricultural land, as per Indian media reports.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The Indian officials commenced rescue operations in villages which flooded after the huge inflow of water in Sutlej and two breaches overnight.&nbsp;</p>

IMD Director General Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, speaking to Hindustan Times, said, “The interaction is causing heavy to very heavy rainfall over Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, north Punjab and Haryana, Uttarakhand. As forecast by us that there will be good rainfall in July, we have covered the rainfall deficit now. In the past nine days, rainfall was 24 per cent&nbsp;excess for the period in July. Rainfall will gradually reduce over these states from tomorrow onwards."<br />

“This happens because of large-scale systems. We had good monsoon circulation, and at the same time, a western disturbance was passing over the region. So, we had strong westerly winds, along with moist easterly winds from the Bay of Bengal, resulting in the convergence of these two types of winds over northwest India,” he said, as reported by Indian Express.</p>

On Monday, this activity is likely to reduce,” he stated.<br />

Talking about the heavy rainfall spells which broke records in a few parts, Mohapatra stated that the phenomenon is not unusual because heavy and extremely heavy rain is expected during the monsoon.</p>

<p>Ministry of Earth Sciences' former secretary, M Rajeevan, said the heavy rains which crumbled parts of northern India can be seen as an important impact of climate change.<br />

“Recent heavy rains &amp; flash floods remind us of one of the important impacts of climate change on monsoons. It rains fewer hours, but when it rains, it rains very heavily. Our forewarning systems &amp; mitigation should further improve. This can happen anywhere,” he tweeted.<br />

“Recent Himachal Pradesh floods remind us of the 2013 Uttarakhand floods with similar synoptic conditions. An active monsoon with strong low-level easterlies bringing plenty of moisture, supported by upper-level divergence due to an eastward-moving trough. These are predictable,” stated the former secretary, while speaking to Hindustan Times.<br />

Explaining the impact of climate change, a climate scientist at the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology, Roxy Mathew Koll said, "In a changing climate, we see that hilly areas and surroundings - whether it's the Himalayan foothills or the Western Ghats - are particularly susceptible to heavy rains and landslides. Due to global warming, there's extra moisture, and the hills stop this moisture flow and lift it, which comes down as heavy rains. Some of the regions over India where extreme rains have increased are such places where the rains happen due to orographic lifting.”</p>

<p>Connaught Place, a popular area in the city, faced similar challenges as roads in the British-era arcade were heavily waterlogged, causing disruptions to businesses.</p>

<p>Videos from Delhi's Chandni Chowk area showed commuters wading through waist-deep water, while the Tilak Bridge underpass also experienced flooding due to continuous rain.</p>

<p>Monsoon rains caused a road cave-in in India's financial capital on Wednesday (July 5). The incident took&nbsp;place in Chembur, the eastern suburb of the city, and several vehicles have reportedly fallen inside the large pit that has opened up in the middle of the road. Local media is reporting that more than 50 vehicles are stuck but the official Twitter handle of BMC (Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation) has not confirmed this tally.</p>

<p>As per reports, police and Mumbai Fire Brigade personnel are present at the location. Residents of buildings in the area have been asked to come out of their homes as there is the possibility that the road cave-in might have affected the foundations of the nearby residential buildings.</p>

<p>Videos of road-cave in and falling vehicles are doing the rounds on social media.</p>

<p>India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a 'yellow alert' for Mumbai for the next three days. It has been predicted that areas in the city will receive heavy to very heavy rainfall.</p>

<p>Local trains, considered to be the lifeline of Mumbai, were running normally on Tuesday on both the Central Railway and Western Railway corridors, as per officials.<br />

However, some commuters claimed the train services were running late by 10 to 15 minutes.</p>

<p>The rainfall has slowed vehicular traffic in some places.</p>

<p>Press Trust of India (PTI) quoted some officials as saying that there was no major water logging in the city.</p>

<p>Most parts of the city and suburbs including Sion, Matunga, Kurla, Chembur, Andheri and Parel received moderate to heavy showers since Monday night.</p>

An official from the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport said their bus services were normal and there was no diversion.</p>

Video: Road caves in during Mumbai rains, several vehicles stuck after falling in pit

<p>At least seven people died as incessant rains battered Pakistan’s Lahore city on Wednesday, breaking a 30-year record.</p>

<p>The city received 291mm of rain, and over a dozen areas recorded more than 200mm of rain, Commissioner Lahore Mohammad Ali Randhawa said, Geo News reported.</p>

<p>Randhawa said that this is the first time that a large amount of rainfall is being witnessed in such a short amount of time, something that has not been seen for the past 30 years.&nbsp;He attributed the sudden downpours to climate change and strong monsoons.</p>

<p>Last year, 238mm of rainfall was recorded while 288mm was received in 2018, he said.</p>

<p>"Three people were electrocuted, two died after roofs collapsed, and a child drowned after rainwater accumulated," Punjab interim Chief Minister Mohsin Naqvi told journalists in Lahore.</p>

<p>In an update on his official Twitter handle, the interim CM said the death toll had risen&nbsp;to seven.</p>

<h2><strong>Lahore to witness another bout of rain</strong></h2>

<p>He said that the record-breaking rain has caused flooding in urban areas and the canals are also overflowing.</p>

<p>“We have dispatched teams across the city to clear main roads and drain water from submerged areas.”</p>

<p>“All the cabinet members and administration are in the field to clear the water. I am also monitoring the situation in the field and getting updates from all over Lahore continuously,” the chief minister said as he visited the city to oversee relief operations.</p>

<p>The heavy downpour is in line with the predictions of the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) last week which warned that moist currents from the Arabian Sea would penetrate the upper parts of the country, and a westerly wave was also likely to enter the upper parts of the country on Monday, causing heavy rainfall from July 4 to 7 across the country.</p>

<p>The Met officials have issued a warning&nbsp;of high-level flooding in the Chenab River due to heavy downpours.</p>
