The India Meteorological Department reports that Thursday's heavy rain in Delhi was followed by light to moderate thunderstorms throughout the day. We must keep a check on the leakage issues, the iron poles, the power lines etc, we should do it and we do it.”

On being asked about the authorities responsible, Kadian added, “Waterlogging is a big issue in Delhi, proper maintenance should be done. MCD and PWD should properly look after this issue and ensure that electric poles&nbsp;are not left behind immersed in water, which are active and may cause fatal cases like these. There are several unauthorised colonies and buildings which have hanging and loose wires, there is not enough space to place a proper transformer, hence due to lack of land way this issue creates more danger.”

Sakshi, a 35-year-old mother of two and a teacher, was electrocuted outside the New Delhi Railway Station (NDLS) three days prior to her family's departure on vacation. According to reports, she was electrocuted while holding onto an electric pole for support in a soggy section of the parking lot of the railroad station.

The danger of loose wires is once again brought to light by the fatalities. A significant risk to both life and property exists because of these high-voltage lines. Unfavourable situations, such as electrocution in the midst of torrential rain and flooding, are especially common during the monsoon. The problem is still unresolved despite repeated petitions from the general public and yearly accidents.

<h2>In the last decade, 34 people died of electrocution per day</h2>

As per the NCRB data, in the last decade (2011 - 2020), about 100,000&nbsp;people&nbsp;lost their lives due to electrocution. It reflects that nearly 11,000 electrocution deaths happen every year, this number rose to 12,492 in 2022.

This equates to 34 fatalities daily on average. According to news agency ANI, when the police arrived on the scene, they found that the street was flooded after a significant downpour. The agency received confirmation from the police officers that the catastrophe was caused by the water that had accumulated becoming an electrical conductor.

A 30-year-old guy died of electrocution the same day Sakshi passed away in Pune's Kondhwa after coming into contact with a wire fence in a residential community while seeking shelter from the rain.

Following the occurrence, BSES issued a warning advising people to take steps to prevent any mishaps. The advisory is as follows:

● Stay away from electrical installations like electricity poles, substations, transformers, streetlights, etc.

● Caution children from playing near electricity installations, even if they are barricaded. Advise them not to play in parks that are waterlogged.

● Get the entire wiring in your premises thoroughly checked and tested by the Licensed Electrical Contractor.

● Put off the main switch in case there is water logging or leakage observed in the meter cabin. Put on the main switch only after ensuring that all faults have been rectified properly.

● Install an Earth Leakage Circuit Breaker (ELCB) to help avoid shocks and mishaps.

● Keep a "Tester" at home. If a switch is wet, do not touch it. First, use a "Tester" to check if there is an electricity leakage. If need be, call your electrician.

● Power theft by hooking can be a serious safety hazard, especially during the monsoon months.

● In case of an emergency or a power disruption, consumers can reach BSES through- BRPL: 19123, BYPL: 19122. In order to solve issues brought on by the monsoon, BSES has put in place a number of measures, such as adequate fencing around transformers that are located on poles and plinths, the deployment of quick-reaction teams to handle emergencies, and the creation of war rooms to quickly assess complaints and identify answers.

According to the State Emergency Operation Centre, two people were killed as&nbsp;one person drowned in Hamirpur and Shimla districts each, reported PTI.&nbsp;

The heavy rains have also damaged crops, homes and vehicles, and washed away livestock, in the Indian state which has since suffered losses worth $95,139 (Rs 78 lakh). The emergency centre officials also said that the uprooted trees blocked some 126 roads, including two national highways.&nbsp;

Furthermore, 141 transformers suffered damage during the rain which also disrupted power supply in parts of the Indian state. Meanwhile, the Met office has cautioned about the possibility of flash floods in Kangra, Mandi, Shimla, Sirmaur, Chamba and Kullu districts, reported PTI.&nbsp;

Mandi district police officials told ANI that the flash floods have hit the Bagipul area near Prashar Lake, with over 200 people including tourists and locals stranded near Baggi Bridge.&nbsp;

In a later update, the official said that the whole road had to be closed due to the cloudburst and many vehicles including a bus of students coming back from Parashar got stuck. “Facilities have been arranged for their overnight stay as there is no possibility of the road opening tonight,” said the Mandi police, as per ANI.&nbsp;

One building collapsed in the Vile Parle area&nbsp;where two senior citizens of a family died and two others were injured. The incident took place at around 2:27 pm (local time).&nbsp;

The Mumbai Fire Brigade deployed two fire engines to help with search and rescue. The deceased were&nbsp;later identified as Prishila Misauita (65) and Robi Misauita (70), who as per officials, were on the building’s balcony when it collapsed.&nbsp;

All four were taken to the civic-run Cooper Hospital, where two people were declared “brought dead,”&nbsp;and the other two&nbsp;have been described as seriously injured. Meanwhile, a second building collapsed in the city’s Ghatkopar area where rescue operations continued till evening as two people are feared trapped under the debris.&nbsp;

Speaking about the water logging in several parts of the city, Maharashtra Minister Mangal Prabhat Lodha, on Sunday said that the war room is constantly monitoring the situation while the local BMC is working around the clock and responded to around 1,200 calls.&nbsp;

Onset of Southwest monsoon begins in India

In a rare event, the monsoon on Sunday covered both Delhi and Mumbai together. While it hit the national capital two days earlier than schedule, its entry into the financial capital is two weeks late, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). "The Southwest Monsoon has advanced over Mumbai and Delhi today (June 25)," an IMD official said.

The monsoon, which had a slow start, has now made swift progress, covering numerous regions, including some parts of Maharashtra, entire Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, northeast India, West Bengal, Jharkhand, Bihar, east Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, most parts of Himachal Pradesh, and some parts of Haryana, according to an IMD official.

Normally, the rain-bearing system reaches Kerala by June 1, Mumbai by June 11, and the national capital by June 27.

Although the monsoon has covered a significant portion of north India, including Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and a large part of Jammu and Kashmir, on schedule or slightly ahead, it is currently running 10-12 days behind schedule for a considerable part of central India, where a significant number of farmers heavily rely on it.

Pai noted that the Arabian Sea branch of the monsoon is now gaining strength with a low-pressure system developing over the Bay of Bengal. "The monsoon may cover the entire Maharashtra and some parts of Gujarat and Rajasthan on Sunday," added the senior meteorologist.

He said that it represents a new pulse of the monsoon, and rapid progress is expected.

Cyclone Biparjoy made landfall in Gujarat's coastal area on Thursday and brought heavy waterlogging and power cuts on Friday in Gujarat and the adjoining regions of the West Indian state.&nbsp;

Residents in Kutch and Bhuj districts reported major waterlogging with muddy water inundating residential areas. There were also reports of power cuts due to damage caused to power stations and electricity poles.

"It is just the beginning," he said.

"We hope that the rain will catch up and whatever deficit has occurred due to the delay, will be compensated in the next 2-3 weeks," he added. At the same time, he also said that the first Orange alert, after the monsoon was declared to have arrived in Kerala, was issued for Kozhikode for today.&nbsp;

"Thunderstorm with light to moderate rainfall and gusty wind speed reaching 40 kmph is likely at one or two places in Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad and Kannur districts and light rainfall is likely at one or two places in Kasaragod district of Kerala," a KSDMA release said.&nbsp;

The Indian government, on Wednesday (June 7) approved the increase of the Minimum Support Price (MSP) for all mandated Kharif crops for the marketing season 2023-24.&nbsp;

The announcement was made by the Indian Minister of Food and Consumer Affairs Minister Piyush Goyal after a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.&nbsp;

The highest increase in MSP was noted in Moong by 10.4 per cent at Rs 8,558 ($104) per quintal this year which is up from Rs 7,755 ($93.98) per quintal last year.&nbsp;

<h2>What is the increased MSP and why?</h2>

The Indian minister has said that the MSP of common grade variety of paddy has been increased by Rs 143 ($1.73) to Rs 2,183 ($26.5) per quintal for the 2023-24 crop year which is also risen&nbsp;from Rs 2,040 ($25) in the previous year. Additionally, the support price of the ‘A’ grade variety of paddy has been hiked by Rs 163 ($1.98) to Rs 2,230 ($27) per quintal from Rs 2,060 ($24.96). &nbsp;&nbsp;

“This move is to ensure remunerative prices to the growers for their produce and to encourage crop diversification,” said Goyal while addressing a press conference after the meeting.&nbsp;

The Indian minister also noted that the Kharif crops are estimated to be 330 million tonnes this year compared to 285 million tonnes in 2018-19, which is also said to be the highest increase in the last five years.&nbsp;

He added, “In agriculture, we have been fixing MSP from time to time based on the recommendations of the CACP (Commission for Agricultural Costs and Prices). The increase in MSP of Kharif crops for this year is highest compared to the previous years.”&nbsp;

The raise is also in line with the Union Budget 2018-19 announcement of fixing the MSP at least 1.5 times the All-India weighted average cost of production which was aimed at “fair remuneration for the farmers.”&nbsp;

The Indian government in a statement also stated, “The expected margin to farmers over their cost of production are estimated to be highest in case of bajra (82 per cent) followed by tur (58 per cent), soybean (52 per cent) and urad (51 per cent).” It added, “For (the) rest of the crops, margin to farmers over their cost of production is estimated to be at least 50 per cent.”&nbsp;

This also comes as the Indian government is moving to&nbsp;boost rice output after it banned exports of broken rice, last year, while also imposing a 20 per cent tax on exports to calm domestic prices.&nbsp;

“The bus fell into a water-filled ditch on a road swept away by floods this summer,” Hussain was quoted as saying.

"The driver could not see the diversion sign on the road and so the van plunged into a 25 feet deep ditch," he added.

According to reports, the road needed repairs and several places were still in flooded.

The Associated Press news agency reported quoting police officer Imran Qureshi said that the bus was bringing passengers from Khairpur district to a famous Sufi shrine in Sehwan.

With widespread rainfall being predicted across Tamil Nadu, for the coming three days, 15 teams of India's National Disaster Response Force(NDRF) have been kept on standby in the state.&nbsp;

In the worst-hit northwest Karnali province, thousands of residents were evacuated after their houses destroyed.

Officials are still searching for 22 people missing across the province, even though they have been facing difficulty in carrying out rescue operations in the mountainous region amid the inclement weather.

'We have mobilised police officers on the ground. We have arranged a helicopter for air rescue from Surkhet," said one police spokesman, quoted by the Annapurna Post.

"However, unfortunately, due to the weather not improving, progress is not being made as expected."

Most cases of missing people have been reported from the low-lying Kalikot district.

Meanwhile, Nepal’s emergency authorities have sounded alarm in some areas of the province which lie near the Karnali river, whose water level has touched the dangerous 12m (39ft) level.
