Southwest monsoon arrives in Maha after two-day delay

The India Meteorological Department predicted that the maximum temperature in Delhi NCR and other parts of northwest India will drop a few degrees over the weekend, but no significant relief is expected until June 15.&nbsp;The temperature might fluctuate between 40 and 43 degrees Celsius. However, as per the forecast, from 16 June onwards, easterly breezes will bring major relief to the region. Due to an onslaught of hot and dry westerly winds, northwest and central India has been experiencing a heatwave since June 2, as reported by PTI.

Senior IMD scientist R K Jenamani said, “The ongoing heatwave spell is less intense as compared to those recorded in April-end and May, but the area of impact is almost equal," he said. He further said that the current heatwave is less severe than the one recorded in late April and early May, but is nearly equivalent.&nbsp;

As per R K Jenamani, the monsoon hit the Kerala coast on May 29 and covered the south and central Arabian sea, Kerala, parts of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu and the entire northeast between May 31 and June 7.&nbsp;

The weather department also said that&nbsp;the monsoon is moving normally and is expected to reach Maharashtra in the next two days. The office had also issued a warning for Arunachal Pradesh, Assam as well as Meghalaya for the following five days.&nbsp;

Meteorological Centre Hyderabad on Monday reported that Telangana is likely to experience isolated rainfall in the next five days.Meteorological Centre Hyderabad scientist Sravani stated that the monsoon is expected to reach Telangana on June 5.

She added, "Rise in the temperature in the morning and thunderstorms and thundershowers will be there in the evenings. Monsoon will progress on 5th or 6th June in Telangana. Till then the temperature will be between 32 to 40 degrees. Thunderstorms and thundershowers will be there in Hyderabad."

The Northern Limit of Monsoon (NLM) continues to pass through Kannur, Palakkad and adjoining areas.

Conditions are favourable for further advance of Southwest monsoon into some parts of central Arabian Sea, remaining parts of Kerala, some more parts of Tamil Nadu, some parts of Karnataka, and some more parts of south &amp; Central Bay of Bengal, some parts of northeast Bay of Bengal and northeastern states during next 3-4 days.

A trough runs from southeast Arabian Sea off north Kerala-Karnataka coast to Southwest Bay of Bengal across Kerala &amp; Tamilnadu at 3.1 km above mean sea level.&nbsp;

Monsoon expected in Telangana by June 5, reports Meteorological Centre

On Sunday, the Indian national capital Delhi’s maximum temperature touched 49 degrees Celsius as a scorching heatwave took an extreme toll on the people who were left gasping for relief.

According to the Indian Meteorological Department, the maximum temperatures in two places in the city breached the 49 degrees mark—49.2 degrees Celsius in northwest Mungeshpur and 49.1 degrees Celsius in western Najafgarh.

While the maximum temperatures in other parts of the city ranged&nbsp;from 45 to 47 degrees Celsius.

By evening, the minimum temperature was recorded at 25 degrees Celsius.

The situation was the same in the adjoining states, with neighbouring Gurgaon in Haryana state recording 48.1 degrees Celsius, the highest since May 10, 1966, when the city logged 49 degrees Celsius.

Weather forecasters said a cyclonic circulation over Punjab and Haryana will induce pre-monsoon activity that will provide some relief from the intense heat on Monday and Tuesday.

The IMD said a thunderstorm or a dust storm is likely in the national capital on Monday.

With Chennai city and outlying districts receiving regular rains in the recent weeks, water levels in reservoirs that cater to the city’s needs are on the rise. In what is a respite for people a drought-prone city, the combined storage of the reservoirs have surpassed the halfway mark.

As per data on the Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply &amp; Sewerage Board or Chennai Metro Water, the total storage of four reservoirs - Poondi, Cholavaram, Red Hills, Chambarambakkam is twice as much as the water that was available last year.

The four reservoirs have a combined storage of 6706 Million Cubic feet (Mcft) as on date, whereas they had 3148Mcft on the same day the previous year. Current storage of 6706Mcft is nearly 60% of the total capacity, which stands at 11257Mcft.&nbsp;

Officials hold the opinion that the current water levels, which are likely to further increase quite well after the impending rains, will be sufficient for the city to tide over the summer of 2021.

In stark contrast, on November 16th 2018, the combined storage of all four reservoirs were 1641Mcft, hardly 10per cent of the total capacity. It was this sharp decline in water levels by November, poor planning and management and also a failed monsoon in 2018 that led to a severe drought in the summer of 2019. Hence, indicating how crucial an optimal water level in these reservoirs is for the city.&nbsp;

It was the mismanagement of the water levels in one of these reservoirs,-Chembarambakkam amid heavy rains that led to large parts of Chennai city and its outskirts being flooded in December 2015.

The meteorological department has predicted heavy rain at isolated places over Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu, Villupuram, Ramanathapuram, Tirunelveli, Cuddalore, Thoothukudi, Mayiladuthurai, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur and Nagapattinam districts of Tamil Nadu.

This year, the North-East monsoon had set in around the last week of October and particularly 29th October saw parts of Chennai city being lashed by heavy rains, of 150-200mm intensity within a few hours.

Current storage of 6706Mcft is nearly 60% of the total capacity, which stands at 11257Mcft. Officials hold the opinion that the current water levels, which are likely to further increase quite well after the impending rains, will be sufficient for the city to tide over the summer of 2021. It was this sharp decline in water levels by November, poor planning and management and also a failed monsoon in 2018 that led to a severe drought in the summer of 2019. Hence, indicating how crucial an optimal water level in these reservoirs is for the city. It was the mismanagement of the water levels in one of these reservoirs,-Chembarambakkam amid heavy rains that led to large parts of Chennai city and its outskirts being flooded in December 2015. "India could easily produce more than 100 million tones but could not export even 1 million tonnes unless the government provides subsidy for exports," the dealer said.

India exported 226,225 tonnes of wheat in the 2018/19 fiscal year that ended on March 31, compared to a record 6.5 million tonnes in 2012/13, according to government data.

Higher production and negligible exports could force the government to increase procurement from farmers to ensure prices stay at or above the MSP, said Galipelli at Inditrade.

Government wheat stocks stood at a record 37.4 million tonnes as of November&nbsp;1, up 13 per cent&nbsp;from a year ago.

Ranchita, a housewife said,&nbsp;"It is hard to run a house if the prices of onion will keep rising like this. People can not afford such costly onions. The prices of onion have now gone up to Rs 40, and if this continues, it will not be easy for a very large section of society to manage their house."

The traders fear that the onion prices may rise further up to Rs 60 due to the festival season.

According to Skymet, weather forecasting agency, active Southwest Monsoon has also given heavy rain and thundershower activities in many parts of Madhya Pradesh during the last 24 hours.

He further informed that the roads which were damaged by landslides will be restored soon as the restoration work is underway and people stranded at different locations are being evacuated to the different areas in the region.

"Today, I will have a meeting with all the Deputy Commissioners through video conferencing, in the state legislative assembly in which to monitor the flood situation in the state and will listen to their requests if any," he further said.

The traffic movement came to a halt at the Bhuntar-Manikaran road near Sarsadi in Kullu district on Monday after the road caved in following a landslide due to heavy rainfall in the state.

South-Western Railway on Saturday announced the cancellation of 10 trains till August 23 due to landslides in Hassan-Mangalore section of Mysuru Division.

"Accidents have happened in unexpected areas.... 80 landslides in various parts of the state. Malappuram, Kavalappara, Bhoothalam Colony and Puthumala in Wayanad are worst affected," Vijayan said during a press conference here.

In total, <a href="https://www.wionews.com/india-news/42-dead-in-rain-battered-kerala-19-trains-cancelled-241955">42 deaths have been reported across the state</a>, with eleven deaths in Wayanad district alone, Vijayan said.

"Police, armed forces, fishermen and volunteers are engaging in rescue operations... This gives us confidence to overcome this situation," he added.

The Chief Minister also mentioned that strict actions will be taken against those who are spreading fake messages.

"Some people spreading news that all dams are going to be opened. Another one is that petrol pumps will be closed. We should take it seriously," he said.

"In our state, there is no fuel crisis. We have enough stock. We are facing a serious disaster and we can face it together," he added.&nbsp;

Kerala rains: Over 20,000 evacuated, more than 300 camps set up across state for assistance

Water-logging followed by incessant downpour has thrown the life of residents out of gear in Anand district, Khambat situated in Gujarat.

Due to heavy downpour, Anand district recorded 15 mm of rainfall within 10 hours on Saturday.

Several parts of the districts including Jahangirpur, Rabariwad, Sagar Society, Mochiwad and Baba Bajisha were inundated with water followed by massive rains.

Various market areas in the region were also deluged in water and locals had to wade through knee-deep water.

The district collector arrived at the waterlogged areas and directed the locals to vacate the affected areas.

Rains were so relentless that children in few areas had to struggle to wade through shoulder-deep water.

Meanwhile, Gujarat's Vadodara was massively hit by waterlogging and flood in several parts across the city, following a heavy downpour since last few days.

In a sigh of relief, District Magistrate Shalini Agarwal on Friday said that the floodwater which had entered Vadodara city is receding.

"Water level in Vishwamitri River is going down since today morning and the water is also receding from the cities. We have opened bridges for vehicular traffic. Electricity, water supply is being restored while health and cleanliness campaigns are being taken up," Agarwal told ANI.

Several people lost their lives after incessant rains in the region swelled the water level in the river causing it to burst into cities.

"There were four deaths due to wall collapse and two due to rainfall. National Disaster Relief Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) teams are deployed for evacuation," Agarwal added.

District Magistrate also mentioned that several crocodiles, which had ventured into the cities due to flood, were rescued.

"Four were rescued today and two were rescued yesterday," she said.

Rescue and evacuation operations were undertaken on a large scale in the cities, in which several incidents of bravery came to light.One sub-inspector Govind Chawla risked his life to rescue a 1.5-year-old girl from the flood in Devipura area here on Thursday.

"The commissioner had ordered to evacuate people from low lying areas. We were in the area to rescue around 50 people who were stuck in floods. There I saw an infant. It was difficult as she could not hold me, so I carried her out of the water on my head using a plastic tub." Chawla said.&nbsp;
