Heavy rains have been continuing in the Thiruvananthapuram district since Monday night.

Currently, a cyclonic circulation in the middle tropospheric levels is located over south Tamil Nadu and its surrounding areas. This may lead to widespread light to moderate rainfall along with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds (30-40 kmph) over Kerala, Mahe, Lakshadweep, and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

The date of monsoon onset over Kerala has varied widely over the last 150 years, the earliest being May 11, 1918, and the most delayed being June 18, 1972, according to IMD data.

The rain-bearing system arrived in the southern state on June 8 last year, May 29 in 2022, June 3 in 2021 and June 1 in 2020.

Last month, the IMD had forecast above-normal rain in the monsoon season in India with favourable La Nina&nbsp;conditions expected to set in by August-September.

Parts of the country battled brutal heat in April, with maximum temperatures shattering records in several states and severely impacting health and livelihoods.

The crippling heat is straining power grids and drying up water bodies triggering drought-like conditions in parts of the country. A prediction of above-normal monsoonal rainfall, therefore, comes as a huge relief to the fast-developing South Asian nation.

The monsoon is critical for India's agricultural landscape, with 52 per cent of the net cultivated area relying on it. It is also crucial for replenishing reservoirs critical for drinking water, apart from power generation across the country.

June and July are considered the most important monsoon months for agriculture because most of the sowing for the Kharif crop takes place during this period.

As per the analysis of Carbon Copy and Climate Trends, only 6 per cent of the 81,852 districts recorded normal rainfall. The daily district-wise rainfall data for four months reveal the “volatile nature of normalcy”, wrote the outlet.

Over 60 per cent of the district-level daily rainfall observations registered large deficits to no rain, while 20 per cent of the observations showed large excess. Days registering large excess rainfall were the next most prevalent category, indicating a trend in uneven rainfall distribution across regions.

August was the worst performing month, as more than 76 per cent of district rainfall registered large deficits to no rain. On the other hand, the excessive rainfall in July with sporadic events of very heavy to extreme rainfall in some areas resulted in an averaging out&nbsp;of a normal monsoon season.&nbsp;

Dr Madhavan Rajeevan, Former Secretary of the Ministry of Earth Sciences and Climate Scientist, also put light on this matter and said that monsoon variability is a real trend and has been increasing consistently.&nbsp;

Regarding the Southwest Monsoon of 2023, Dr Rajeevan said, “When global warming happens not only means but also extremes will increase. This monsoon will be known for its large spatial and temporal variability and is typical of any year.”

Hence, the report deduces that spatial distribution of rainfall will be a common trend in the coming years and it will become important to adapt to this increasing variability.&nbsp;

Though the Island Nation never hosts international matches this season, especially during the first half of September due to heavy rains, the Sri Lankan Cricket Board (SLC) accepted this proposal.

While as per the schedule, Colombo will host Super Four matches from September 9 onwards, the current situation there, which could change by then, is making the decision-makers worry about more abandoned games in this tournament.&nbsp;

As Sri Lanka had earlier proposed Dambulla – a dryer region in comparison to Kandy and Colombo, as one of the venues to host the group stage and Super Four matches, the reluctance from the teams and broadcasters to travel there prompted all parties concerned to pick the remaining two venues.

The Indian Express reported that ACC could finalise the venue debate in the next 24-48 hours.

Beyond the Pakistan leg (which is supposed to host four matches, one in Multan and the remaining three in Lahore), all games will be played in Sri Lanka, including the final on September 17.&nbsp;

India-Pakistan washed-out game in Pallekele, Kandy, drew a lot of criticism over the Asia Cup schedule, with former PCB chief Najam Sethi also taking a jibe at the BCCI for choosing politics over cricket.

While serving as the PCB head, Sethi had proposed UAE as the second option after learning about India’s stance of not travelling to Pakistan for the six-team tournament. The BCCI secretary, Jay Shah, who is also ACC head, denied it, citing excessive heat and unfavourable playing conditions as reasons behind it.&nbsp;

As a result, Sri Lanka was chosen as the second venue, with India scheduled to play their matches in the Island Nation only. Meanwhile, India’s game against Nepal is also said to be under threat due to heavy rains.&nbsp;

After the driest August since 1901, the Southwest Monsoon in India is expected to cause showers in the month of September, said the India Meteorological Department (IMD). This will bring rain to the central and southern parts of the country.

IMD Director General Mrutyunjay Mohapatra addressed a virtual press conference on Thursday (August 31). He said that September was likely to witness normal rainfall in the range of 91-109 per cent of the long-period average of 167.9 mm.

However, Mohapatra added that even if rainfall in September remains on the higher side, the seasonal rainfall (June-September) average is expected to be below normal.

He said that the development of El Nino in the equatorial Pacific Ocean was the most important reason behind the less rainfall in August.

However, he added that the Indian Ocean Dipole - the difference in sea surface temperature of the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal - had started turning positive. This he said, may potentially counter the impact of El Nino.

The director general said that the Madden Julian Oscillation - the eastward-moving pulse of clouds and the rainfall in the tropics was turning favourable for the Monsoon in India and it will possibly lead to the revival of the Monsoon.

In central India, the rainfall in August was around 164.5 mm compared to the previous lowest rainfall record of 172.8 mm in 1905.

Peninsular India recorded 73.5 mm of rain in August as compared to the previous lowest rainfall record of 89.4 mm in 1905.

In August this year, there was a 36 per cent rainfall deficiency. The month was also hot in addition to being dry.

The all-India average for maximum temperature was 32.09 degree&nbsp;Celsius. Normally, the average is 31.09 degree&nbsp;Celsius. The all-India average mean temperature was 28.40 degree&nbsp;Celsius compared to 27.55 degree&nbsp;Celsius, which is the case normally.&nbsp;

Figures under both these heads were highest for the month since 1901.
